Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Wedge (Allenhurst) over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s get real about the next couple of weeks here at The Wedge (Allenhurst). I’ve looked long and hard at what’s coming, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim stretch for most of the period. We’ve got a long dry spell of tiny, junk waves before a possible late turn-around.
Right now, and for the bulk of the next two weeks, it’s pretty much flat or close to it. The combined swell energy is basically non-existent, often sitting in single digits or low double figures. You’ll see a few days with a bit of knee-high slop, but it’s almost always blown out by onshore or cross-shore winds. Don’t get excited about the 1ft or 2ft readings – the period is short, the energy is weak (34), and the wind is messy. It’s a real struggle for a wave.
We’ve got a big gap with no real surf to speak of from the 11th right through to the morning of the 24th of July. That’s a solid two-week drought. The wind is mostly onshore from the east or northeast, and the swell just isn’t there. Even the days with a little bit of height, like the 16th with 3ft, the period is a shocking 5 seconds and it’s cross-shore. It’s a kitesurfing setup more than a surfing one.
Now, for the one faint glimmer of hope. Look ahead to Friday the 24th of July. The morning brings a pulse of 3ft swell from the south, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy hits a moderate 109. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the southwest, which is a major positive. This will be the only day in the whole window with surfable waves and clean conditions. It’s still not a classic—the short period means it’ll be a bit crumbly and won’t have much punch—but after two weeks of nothing, it’s the best we’ve got. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
The stand-out day is that Friday morning. The waves aren’t big, but they’ll be the cleanest we’ve seen. The cross-off wind will groom the faces, and the south swell direction is right for the jetty. Expect crowds to be likely, as everyone will be desperate for a wave. Because it’s a beach/jetty setup, the short period won’t be a total disaster, but don’t expect long, walling rides. It’s just something to get wet on. The Saturday morning after that bumps up to 5ft from the SSE, but it’s still blown out by moderate cross-off winds, and the energy (166) is moderate but the quality is poor. It’s not worth holding out for.
So, in short: a long, flat, and frustrating run until the 24th of July. That Friday morning is your only real shot. Don’t expect much, but it’s all we’ve got.
Rusty.
