The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's happening at our local spot.
Honestly, it's a tough stretch ahead. The next 16 days are looking pretty bleak for a proper paddle-out. We've got 16 days of forecast here, but the first real chance of anything even worth mentioning doesn't really kick in until the end of the first week. Even then, it's a long haul of small, weak surf. For the better part of a week and a half, from now through the 4th of September, the swell is just too small and the conditions too ordinary to get excited about. The combined wave energy is mostly in the double digits, like 61, 50, 47, 33 – all well under 100, which tells you just how weak it is.
The only time we see a tiny flicker of hope is on Friday, August 28th. The Wedge (Allenhurst) is our only option, and it's a beach/jetty setup. Early that morning, we get a bit of a reprieve with a small 2 ft swell out of the SE and the wind goes glassy – zero wind – which is a massive plus for clean conditions. The combined energy nudges up to 99 (weak, but the best we get), and with a short period of 10 seconds, it'll be a bit wobbly. This is the standout, but only because everything else is a complete dud. Even then, the wave comment is "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," so keep expectations in the gutter. The water temp is 78.3°F, which is over 5 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year – very unusual, feels like bathwater.
Through the rest of the window, the dominant swell is tiny, between 0.7 ft and 3 ft, mostly out of the SE. The offshore winds we get on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th and 1st of September will make the surface clean, but the swell is just too weak. A 0.7 ft wave with a 12-second period on Sunday afternoon might look clean, but it's not going to barrel. The period is long, which is good for shape, but there's no energy behind it (energy of 33). For the most part, it's cross-shore or onshore breezes, making the weak swell even chop-heavier.
Bottom line: If you're desperate for a paddle and a tan, that Friday morning on the 28th is your best shot. Otherwise, save the wax. The rest of the window offers nothing but flat to ankle-biters and messy conditions. This is a bare patch.
