The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for the New Jersey coastline is a tough one. We're mainly looking at The Wedge (Allenhurst) and honestly, the surf just isn't cooperating. There's a serious lull on the way.
We kick off this Sunday, the 19th of July, with barely a ripple. We're talking 0.3ft of swell from the southeast, with a super long 13-second period, but it's just not enough to push through the wind. The wave energy is only 7, so it's basically flat. The water temp is about average for the time of year, but you won't be getting wet for the waves.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are write-offs. The swell is either non-existent or, by Tuesday, we get a 3ft bump from the SSE, but it's got a shocking 5-second period and a moderate cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy climbs to 74, but it's just a short, choppy mess. Then from Wednesday the 22nd through the 24th, we hit a real dead zone. There's literally zero swell energy for a couple of days, and then it's back to tiny, weak pulses.
We finally see a bit of life on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. The swell straightens out a bit at 3ft from the ESE with a slightly better 8-second period, and the energy gets up to 106 on Saturday afternoon. The problem? The wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. It's a beach/jetty setup, so with that wind and small swell, it's looking more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
The best chance for something halfway decent comes on Monday the 27th of July. The afternoon sees a 4ft swell from the south with a short 5-second period, but critically, the wind turns cross-off. The combined energy is 135 (moderate), and the wave comment improves to "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It's not a stand-out by any stretch, but it's clean. For a beginner, 4ft is a bit of a push, so keep that in mind.
After that, it's back to the same story. We get a few glimmers in the following week, like Wednesday the 29th afternoon with a 2ft SE swell and clean conditions, but it's small and weak. The rest of the run into early August is full of poor surf conditions, small swell, and onshore or cross-shore winds. There's nothing to get excited about; no standouts on the horizon. The break is fairly consistent, but the quality just isn't there.
This is one of those stretches where you're better off checking the forecasts again later. It can't stay this poor for long.
Stay patient, Rusty.
