The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next sixteen days at Moose are pretty grim. We're looking at a long, quiet stretch with hardly a window of decent surf. The first real chance doesn't even show up until Monday the 20th, and even then it's not gonna set the world on fire.

The big issue is the wind. For most of the first week, we've got strong cross and cross-onshore winds mucking up what little swell there is. Saturday the 18th is a write-off – tiny 2ft to 2ft SSW swell at 6 to 7 seconds, cross-shore wind, and the combined energy is barely a whisper at 41 to 63. Not worth paddling out for.

Sunday the 19th sees a jump in size, with 8ft of S swell hitting in the morning, but it's a mess – fresh cross-onshore breeze at 22 mph, lumpy as hell, and the combined energy is strong at 540 but the quality is poor. That afternoon the wind drops a bit, but it's still cross-shore and chopped.

Monday the 20th is the pick of the first week, and it's still just a marginal call. Morning brings 4ft of SW swell at 8 seconds, with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the west at 12 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 370. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 5ft from the SSW, still clean, but the energy jumps to 536. This is the best we've got for a while, but it's only a 1 or 2 out of 10 – surfable but ordinary.

Tuesday the 21st drops right back to 2ft, and from there it's a slow bleed. Wednesday the 22nd is onshore and messy, with 3ft of 5-second SE windswell – total junk. Thursday the 23rd pumps up to 8ft of S swell at 9 seconds, with a strong 869 combined energy, but the wind is a strong cross-onshore at 25 mph, making it dangerous and ugly. That's expert-only territory, and even then, it's not worth it.

We get a brief flicker on Friday the 24th, with 4ft of S swell at 7 seconds and a clean, light offshore breeze from the WSW at just 3 mph. The combined energy is 191, and it's the only clean window in the whole run. But it's still a 1 out of 10 – surfable but very ordinary. The water temp is about 59°, which is right on average for the time of year.

After that, it's a dead zone. From Saturday the 25th right through to Sunday the 2nd of August, we're looking at tiny, weak swell under 3ft, with cross-onshore or onshore breezes and combined energy values mostly under 100. The best of that stretch is Wednesday the 29th of July afternoon, when we get 5ft of S swell at 9 seconds with a clean offshore breeze from the NNW at 12 mph. The combined energy is 446, and it's the only "good" call in the whole outlook – but it's still only a 2 out of 10. That's a long way off, and not something to get excited about.

Honestly, if you're desperate, Friday the 24th morning is the only real paddle. Otherwise, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially on those windy days. It's a bleak run, but it's what we've got. Keep an eye on the forecasts – things can change.

Rusty.
