The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Moose over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the first week is a bit of a write-off. The wind is a problem, the swell is messy, and you’ll be scratching your head. From now through to the end of July, the conditions are mostly cross-shore or onshore, with a lot of rain and lumpy chop. The combined wave energy stays weak, with values like 68, 74, and 67, and the swell is short period, around 6 to 8 seconds, making for weak, bumpy rides. The best option in the first week is Monday afternoon, the 20th of July, with 4ft of SSW swell, a clean cross-offshore wind, and “clean” conditions listed, but it’s only getting a “marginal” call – it’s more of a hope than a sure thing.
Now, the standout. Thursday the 23rd of July – that’s when things get real. The swell is pumping hard: 10ft from the south, with a 10-second period, and the combined energy cranks up to 1779 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is cross-shore, but the forecast says the wind and tide are favorable, even though the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert territory only. The water temperature is about 59°F, which is normal for the time of year, so don’t expect any surprises there.
After that, things settle down. Friday the 24th of July morning has 4ft of SSW swell, with a clean cross-offshore wind, and the energy is 432 – moderate. That’s a decent option if you want something smaller and cleaner. The rest of the end of July and into early August is pretty forgettable: small swells, onshore winds, and weak energy. The combined energy drops back into the 100s and under 100, with values like 96, 92, and 77. There’s a brief window on Sunday the 26th of July morning with glassy conditions and 4ft of SSE swell, but the energy is only 138 and the surf is described as “ordinary.”
For the first week of August, it’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations. The swell is small, the wind is mostly cross-on, and the energy is weak. It’s a quiet stretch all the way to the end of the forecast.
So, bottom line: if you’re an expert, circle Thursday the 23rd of July – that’s the one day where the swell is big and the conditions might line up. For everyone else, the best of a bad bunch is Friday the 24th of July morning, but don’t get your hopes too high. The rest of the run is a wait-and-see.
Rusty.
