The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at The Bombie over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, so we’ve got a classic stretch coming up. The Bombie is a heavy, advanced reef setup, and it’s fairly consistent. It’s exposed to the swell and loves a good SW direction. The crowds can be a problem sometimes, so keep that in mind. The water temp is sitting right on 80°, which is bang on average for the time of year – nothing weird there.
The best windows are the first few days. Wednesday, July 15th is the real standout. The morning session has a solid 7 ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the east. The combined energy is massive at (2084), so you’ll feel the power. But the real gem is the Wednesday afternoon: the wind turns full offshore from the ESE, the swell is still a meaty 6 ft from the SSW, same long period, and the energy is still huge (1665). That’s the pick of the whole outlook – big, clean, powerful waves for experienced surfers only.
Thursday July 16th holds up nicely too, with a 5 ft SSW swell, 15-second period, and solid offshore ESE winds. The energy is moderate-to-strong (1135). Good, but not as big as Wednesday. Friday morning July 17th gets a bit rougher with a risk of thunderstorms and a cross-off wind, but the swell is still a clean 5 ft from the SW. Afternoon goes back to offshore and cleaner.
We hit a bit of a lull over the weekend of July 18th and 19th. The swell drops to 4-5 ft, and while the winds are offshore, the energy is lower (in the 700-1000 range). It’s still surfable for the advanced crew, but nothing to write home about.
Then on Monday July 20th, we get another pulse of size. The morning sees a 7 ft SSW swell with a 17-second period, and the energy jumps back up to (2640). The wind is fresh offshore, but there’s rain showers around. The swell is over 7 ft, so this is definitely for experts only. The afternoon is similar with a 7 ft swell.
After that, through the rest of July and into the first week of August, the size backs off to the 3-5 ft range. The winds stay mostly offshore or cross-off, but the energy is moderate to weak. The period stays long for the first week, which is good for this reef, but by July 27th the swell direction shifts to SE and the period drops to 8 seconds – that’s short-period, weaker stuff. The combined energy numbers drop into the 500-900 range, so it’s not the same quality.
The absolute standout is that Wednesday afternoon, July 15th. Get on it if you can handle the size. The Monday July 20th is a close second for the big-wave hunters, but the wind and rain aren’t as clean. After that, it’s a waiting game for the next proper pulse.
Stay safe out there. This is a serious wave.
Rusty.
