The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, lookin' at the same stretch of water, but in feet and miles.
The first few days are a bit of a slow starter. The surf's on the small side and nothin' to write home about. The real juice is later in the run, and it's a banger.
The first proper pulses start around Monday, July 20th, with a building SW swell. The water temp is a warm 80°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year. The main spot is The Bombie, a gnarly reef that's only for the advanced crowd. It breaks fairly often, but you might have to share it with a few others.
That Monday, we're lookin' at a solid 5ft to 7ft SW groundswell, with a period of 14 to 16 seconds. The energy is gettin' up there – moderate to strong. The wind is offshore from the SE, so it's gonna be clean. At 7ft, this is gettin' into proper expert territory.
Tuesday, July 21st, holds the size around 5ft to 6ft with similar SW groundswell, and the wind stays offshore, though a bit fresher. Still clean.
Then things drop off mid-week, with smaller 3ft to 4ft SSW swell. The wind stays offshore, so it's clean, but the energy is weaker.
The real standout, the one that's got me stoked, is the end of the month and into the start of August. We're talkin' a serious run of SW groundswell. From Friday, July 31st, we've got a 5ft to 6ft SW swell with a very long period of 18 to 19 seconds. The wave energy is strong. That long period is perfect for a reef like The Bombie – it'll be a freight train. With the offshore SE wind, it's gonna be world-class.
And it just keeps truckin'. Saturday, August 1st, you're lookin' at a solid 8ft SW swell with a 17-18 second period. The energy is huge. The wind is still offshore from the ESE. This is not for the faint of heart. This is big, powerful, dangerous reef break. It's only for the experienced. Sunday, August 2nd, holds similar size around 7ft to 7ft with strong energy.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a bit of a mixed bag, with the best chances being the Monday and Tuesday (July 20-21) for a solid, clean session. But the absolute standout, the one to mark on the calendar, is the end of July into the first of August. That Friday, July 31st, through to Sunday, August 2nd, is lookin' like a proper, powerful, world-class reef break. Get your big-wave gun ready.
Rusty.
