The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks at The Bombie.
This is a heavy reef break, advanced only, exposed to the south-west. Water temps are about what you’d expect for this time of year.
The surf starts Friday, August 21st. Friday morning brings a 5ft SSW groundswell with a super long 18-second period, combined energy of 2588 (strong). Offshore breeze from the ESE keeps it clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Friday afternoon bumps up to 8ft, still a long 17-second period, and energy jumps to 3294. Winds stay offshore, and it’s clean. This is a standout session.
Saturday morning, August 22nd, sees a 7ft SSW swell, 16-second period, but the wind goes cross-off, so it’s a bit less clean. Saturday afternoon the wind swings back offshore, and the 7ft SSW swell with 16-second period is clean and excellent. Sunday the 23rd holds steady – 6ft SSW swells, 15-second periods, offshore winds both morning and afternoon, clean. Monday the 24th is similar: 6ft and 6ft SSW swells, offshore winds, and excellent conditions.
Tuesday the 25th has a little more cloud, but the wind is offshore, and the swell is 6ft, period 16 seconds. The morning is a bit marginal, but the afternoon cleans up. Wednesday the 26th sees the swell dropping to 5ft, period 14 seconds. The morning is cross-off, the afternoon is offshore and clean. Energy is moderate.
Thursday the 27th is a small lull, with a 4ft SW swell in the morning, but a 3ft SSW swell in the afternoon with a 19-second period – that’s a very long, clean groundswell, and gentle offshore winds.
Now, Friday, August 28th. Friday morning is a standout: 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, combined energy of 3486. The wind is a light 5 km/h cross-off, and it’s clean. That’s big, powerful – experts only. Friday afternoon is similar size, but the wind goes a bit more cross-off.
The weekend of the 29th holds 6ft SSW swells, 15-second period, with good offshore winds. Clean. Sunday the 30th has a bit of rain in the morning, but the swell is still solid at 6ft, 13-second period, and the wind is offshore.
Monday the 31st sees the swell drop to 3ft, but the period is 18 seconds – very long. Tuesday, September 1st, is a big call: 7ft and 7ft SW swells, 18-second period, combined energy over 3000. Offshore winds, clean and excellent. This is a standout day.
Wednesday, September 2nd, holds 7ft SW swells, 16-second period, with offshore winds. Thursday the 3rd is a bit smaller, 6ft and 6ft, but still clean.
And then Friday, September 4th – this is the one. The morning: 8ft SSW swell, 20-second period, combined energy of 6169. The afternoon: 10ft SSW swell, 19-second period, energy of 6569. That’s exceptional, huge, heavy. The wind is offshore, light to gentle. Experts only. Saturday, September 5th, still has 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, with good winds.
The Bombie is a consistent reef that doesn’t break often, so when it’s on, it’s on. Expect crowds are possible given the quality. This whole run is a gift for the brave.
Rusty.
