Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Bombie over the next 16 days.

G'day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run coming up at The Bombie, a serious reef break for advanced surfers only. The window opens Thursday morning, 9 July, with a big groundswell from the SSW pushing 7ft, but conditions are a bit messy with a cross-off wind and rain showers taking the shine off. The combined swell energy is strong at 2159, so there’s plenty of power in the water, but the quality isn't quite there for the start.

Thursday afternoon cleans up nicely though. The wind swings offshore, the swell drops slightly to 6ft, and the 15-second period keeps the waves long and lined up. The energy is still strong (1790), but it’s the afternoon that offers the first real chance at a good session. The water temperature is sitting at 27°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Friday, 10 July, looks similar but the wind is a bit stronger in the morning, making it tricky. The afternoon is the go again with a clean offshore breeze and swell still holding at 6ft from the SW. The period stretches to 16 seconds, so expect long, grinding walls. Energy is still strong (1729).

Saturday, 11 July, is where things get interesting. The morning is still cross-off, but by the afternoon we get a clean, moderate offshore wind and the swell drops to 5ft from the SW. The period is 14 seconds – still a solid groundswell. The energy is moderate (1216), but the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is a standout window. The Bombie will be linking up nicely.

Sunday, 12 July, the swell drops off significantly to 3ft, and the energy falls to 466. Not much to write home about. Monday morning, 13 July, is small, but Monday afternoon throws a curveball – a 3ft swell with a 21-second period coming from the SSW. That’s a very long period groundswell. The energy jumps back up to 1039, and with a clean offshore wind, this will be a weird one. That kind of period can make breaks like The Bombie, a reef, absolutely unload, but it also means long waits between sets. If you’re patient, it could be magic.

Now, Tuesday, 14 July, is a ripper. Morning offers 6ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, strong energy (2151), and clean offshore wind. Afternoon is similar but the wind gets a bit stronger. This is the other standout – consistent, powerful, and clean. The Bombie will be firing.

The run continues through Wednesday, 15 July, with solid 6ft swell and fresh offshore winds, though the wind is a bit strong. Energy stays high (2315). Thursday, 16 July, the swell drops to 5ft, but the afternoon is clean with a moderate offshore breeze and energy still moderate (1206). Good, but not a standout.

The second week is more of a slow burn. From Friday, 17 July, through to Monday, 20 July, the swell sits around 4ft to 5ft, with the occasional punch of energy (like 1374 on Saturday afternoon, 18 July). Conditions are generally clean with offshore winds, but the size is more for the competent surfer, not the big wave charger. There’s a gap of smaller, less exciting surf, but still rideable.

The real magic in the second week comes on Thursday, 24 July. That morning we get a 2ft swell from the SW with a 17-second period, and the wind is glassy – a slight air from the SSW. The energy is moderate (552), but on a reef like The Bombie, glassy conditions with a long period swell will produce some of the most perfect, peeling waves you’ll see. The swell direction is SSW, which is a good match for the optimum SW direction. If you can wait, this is the sleeper standout of the whole forecast. Just be aware that the swell is small, so it’s a more intricate, technical wave.

The Bombie is a fairly consistent break, but it does get crowded sometimes. With that in mind, the best bets are the Tuesday afternoon, 14 July, and the glassy morning of Thursday, 24 July. The first is solid power and clean, the second is pure finesse. Don’t expect a massive run of huge swell, but there’s quality in there.

Rusty.
