The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down the surf for Temples – a reef and point that’s wide open to the SW swell. The water’s sitting at 80.1°, which is about 0.4° warmer than usual for this time of year – pretty much normal. The first few days are a bit of a slow burn. There’s energy in the water, but the conditions aren’t quite clicking for a full green light.
Sunday the 19th: we’ve got a 3.9 ft SW swell, 13-second period, with a fresh offshore wind from the ESE keeping things clean. The combined energy is moderate at 899. It’s listed as marginal, so it’s more of a paddle-around session than a standout.
Monday the 20th bumps up. The morning is 5.2 ft from the SW, 14-second period, energy jumping to 2074 – that’s a solid increase. Still offshore, but the forecast says marginal. The afternoon hits 6.9 ft from the SSW, 16-second period, and a very strong energy of 2325. For the experienced crew, it’s got push, but the call is marginal.
Tuesday the 21st: 5.6 ft SSW in the morning, 14-second period, energy 1332, with moderate offshore winds. The afternoon drops to 5.2 ft. Still clean, still marginal.
Wednesday the 22nd: 4.3 ft in the morning, 13-second period, energy 744, with rain showers. Not the one.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are smaller – 2.6 ft to 3.6 ft – but the period stretches to 18 seconds on Friday morning, a long groundswell. Energy is moderate at 867. Still marginal.
Saturday the 25th is the first real highlight. The morning brings a 4.3 ft SSW swell, 15-second period, and a moderate energy of 1059. The winds are light offshore from the ESE, and the forecast says excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. The swell direction is a perfect match for the break, and the crowd factor is “sometimes” – you might see a few others, but it’s not packed. This is a good one.
Sunday the 26th: 3.3 ft to 4.6 ft, but the period drops to 8 seconds in the afternoon – short and weak, so the quality fades.
Monday the 27th: small but nice. The morning has a 1.6 ft swell, but the period is a massive 19 seconds – very long groundswell. The wind is a light breeze at 10 km/h, and the energy is moderate at 581. The forecast says expect very good surf conditions. For a reef and point, that long period will wrap in cleanly. It’s not big, but it’ll be glassy and fun.
Tuesday the 28th afternoon: 3.9 ft from the SSW, 16-second period, energy 1287, and the forecast says excellent for experienced surfers. Clean offshore winds. That’s a solid session.
Wednesday the 29th is the pick of the whole run. Morning: 5.9 ft SSW, 16-second period, energy 1676 – strong. Afternoon: 6.2 ft SSW, 15-second period, energy 1645. Both sessions are rated excellent for experienced surfers, with moderate offshore winds. That’s a proper swell, good direction, and clean conditions. Get on it.
Thursday the 30th: 5.6 ft in the morning, 14-second period, energy 1322, with a gentle offshore breeze – glassy. Another excellent call.
Friday the 31st: 3.9 ft in the morning, 18-second period, energy 1307, excellent. The afternoon has a risk of thunderstorms and a fresh offshore, so it might get spicy.
Into the first week of August, the swell holds. Saturday the 1st: 4.3 ft to 4.6 ft, 17-second period, energy over 1000, but marginal. Sunday the 2nd: 4.9 ft to 5.2 ft, SW, 16-second period, energy 1363 to 1792 – still marginal. Then Monday the 3rd of August is a big one: 7.2 ft in the morning, 7.5 ft in the afternoon, SW, 17-second period, and the energy is massive at 2842 and 2976. That’s very strong. The wind is fresh offshore. The forecast is still marginal, but for experienced surfers, that’s a serious, expert-only swell. The reef and point will handle it, but it’ll be a beast.
