The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for our local stretch.
We’ve got a solid run of surf coming through, starting from Sunday the 23rd of August all the way into early September. The first few days won’t be firing on all cylinders, but there’s a definite pulse of energy building. The real standout is going to be Friday the 28th of August – that’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Kicking off Sunday morning, we’ve got a clean 6ft SSW swell running at 15 seconds. The wind is a steady offshore from the ESE at 16 mph, so the surface is looking nice and tidy. The combined energy is sitting at 1986 (moderate wave energy), but the tide conditions are a bit iffy, so it’s more of a warm-up session. That trend holds into Monday with similar size and clean conditions, though Monday afternoon sees the quality tick up a notch for experienced surfers. Tuesday and Wednesday stay in that 5ft to 6ft range with consistent offshore winds – good, but not epic.
Now, Thursday the 27th is a bit of a transition day. The swell drops to 3ft in the morning but the period jumps to a very long 22 seconds. That’s groundswell energy, and combined with cross-off winds, it’s clean but not pushing much punch. The afternoon gets a bit more size at 4ft, still clean, but nothing to get too worked up about.
Friday the 28th of August is the standout. We’re looking at a solid 10ft SSW swell early, with a 16-second period and light winds from the SE at 6 mph. That’s offshore and glassy – the surface will be pristine. The combined energy is a massive 4071 (strong to very strong wave energy). This is expert territory. The swell direction matches the optimum SW swell for Temples, and the reef-and-point setup will handle this long-period energy beautifully. It will be big, powerful, and clean – a morning for the hardcore crew. Crowds will likely be around, but the quality will be worth it.
Saturday the 29th sees the swell drop back to 7ft, still with a nice 15-second period and gentle offshore winds. It’s still excellent for experienced surfers, but more manageable than Friday.
As we move into the last week of August and first week of September, we’ve got a steady stream of SSW and SW swells in the 4ft to 7ft range. The period stays solidly in the 13-18 second range, so the waves will have plenty of shape and energy. Winds remain mostly offshore or cross-off, keeping the surface clean. The standout in this second week is Monday the 31st of August, with a 5ft SSW swell and 18-second period, clean offshore winds – that’s a gem for the experienced crew. The first few days of September maintain that 5ft to 7ft range, all with favourable winds.
We don’t have water temperature data for the specific dates, but given the consistent run of clean swell, it’s looking like a good stretch for those who know what they’re doing. This is not beginner territory when the swell pushes over 5ft, and certainly not on Friday the 28th when it hits 10ft.
So, in short: get your board ready for Friday the 28th of August. That’s the day. The run before and after is filled with quality, clean, intermediate-to-advanced surf. No dud days in sight.
Rusty.
