Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of groundswell on the way, all from the south-west quadrant, and the wind is looking offshore the whole time. That’s the trade-off – clean surf, but a stiff breeze to go with it. The water’s sitting at about 80°F, right on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The action kicks off Tuesday morning, July 7th, at Temples. It’s a reef and point set-up, and it’s exposed to the swell. The morning brings a 4.6ft SSW swell with a beautiful 16-second period. That’s proper groundswell, the kind that wraps around points nicely. The wind is a fresh 18.6 mph offshore from the SE, keeping the faces clean. The combined energy is moderate (933). The session gets a bit more juice in the afternoon: still 4.6ft, still 15-second period, but the wind drops to a moderate 15.5 mph offshore. It’s clean, it’s building. The sets will have some gaps with that long period, so don’t expect a constant wall of whitewater.
Wednesday, July 8th, is where the swell muscle starts to show. The morning is 6.6ft from the SSW at 15 seconds, with a moderate 15.5 mph offshore breeze. The energy bumps up to strong (1907). That’s a lot of power. By the afternoon, it’s 6.9ft with a 16-second period, and the energy is very strong (2205). This is getting serious – it’s in the expert zone, and the waves will have real weight. The wind is still clean offshore. This is a stand-out session for the experienced crew.
Thursday, July 9th, the swell holds at 6.9ft in the morning, but the wind is a proper 21.7 mph offshore. That’s a fresh breeze. The energy is still very strong (2159). It’s going to be challenging, with rain showers in the mix. The afternoon eases slightly to 6.2ft, but the wind is still a fresh 18.6 mph offshore. It’s powerful, clean, but demanding.
The pattern continues Friday, July 10th, with a 6.2ft SSW swell and 16-second period, but again a fresh 21.7 mph offshore wind and rain showers in the morning. The afternoon improves with a moderate 15.5 mph offshore breeze and 5.9ft. The energy is still strong (1734).
Saturday, July 11th, sees the swell starting to drop a bit. Morning is 5.2ft, a fresh 21.7 mph offshore, and rain showers. The afternoon is 4.6ft with a moderate offshore breeze. The energy is moderate (1182/1282). Still very surfable, just a notch down in power.
Sunday, July 12th, is the low point. The swell drops to 3.0ft in the morning and 2.6ft in the afternoon. The period is still decent (12-13 seconds), but the energy is weak (470/449). The wind is a moderate 12.4 mph offshore, so it’s clean but small. A good day for a longboard or a log.
Monday, July 13th, the swell picks back up. Morning is 3.6ft, afternoon is 3.9ft, both from the SW. The period is 12-13 seconds. The wind is a moderate 15.5 mph offshore. The afternoon energy is moderate (1058). It’s a nice rebound.
Now, the next highlight. Tuesday, July 14th. The morning is 4.3ft, but the period is a very long 17 seconds from the SSW. The energy is very strong (2010). The wind is a fresh 21.7 mph offshore. That’s a lot of open ocean energy hitting the reef. The afternoon is the real standout of the whole run: 6.6ft from the SSW with an 18-second period. The energy is very strong (2552). The wind is a fresh 18.6 mph offshore, keeping
