The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got one spot, Temples, and it’s looking like a solid run of swell for the next couple of weeks. The water temp is pretty much where you’d expect it for this time of year, nothing wild there.

The main event is a big, long-period groundswell from the SSW that hits early. This is a reef and point setup, so that long-period energy (18 seconds at first) will be drawn out beautifully along the point, not just throwing straight walls. The wave energy is very strong (3575), and the wind is locked in from the ESE, which is light offshore. That’s a clean, glassy combo for experienced surfers.

Wednesday the 19th of August is the standout. Morning sees 2.4m (8ft) of 18-second SSW swell with a 12 mph offshore breeze. The afternoon picks up to 2.5m (8ft). This is big, powerful, and incredibly clean. It’s definitely in the expert-only zone, but if you’ve got the skills, it’s going to be a session to remember. The consistency is good, and with those offshore winds, crowds are possible but the quality will be worth the company.

Thursday the 20th holds well with 2.5m (8ft) in the morning from the SW, dropping slightly to 2.4m (8ft) in the afternoon. The wind stays offshore, but the afternoon gets a bit of a question mark on the tide. Friday the 21st has a smaller morning (1.4m, 5ft) but the afternoon picks back up to 2.3m (8ft) with a fresh offshore breeze. Saturday the 22nd is similar, with a fresh offshore breeze in the morning making the 2.2m (7ft) swell feel a bit bumpy, but the afternoon cleans up nicely with a moderate offshore.

Sunday the 23rd through to the end of the month, the swell drops a bit but stays in the 1.4m to 1.8m range (5ft to 6ft), still with that long-period feel. The wind remains offshore or cross-offshore most of the time, keeping the surf clean. It’s not the 2.5m (8ft) beast of the first days, but it’s still very good, consistent, and perfect for a longboard or a step-down board.

The second week continues this pattern. Standouts are the 28th of August, with another pulse of 2.4m (8ft) swell and a gentle offshore wind. That’s a beauty. The 31st of August and 1st of September also look like clean, fun days with 1.7m to 1.8m (6ft to 6ft) of SW groundswell and consistent offshore winds. The energy drops a bit towards the 3rd of September, but still a solid 1.3m (4ft) with a 14-second period and light offshore winds.

Honestly, this is a fantastic run for Temples. The best on offer is the first two days, Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th. That’s the big, clean, powerful stuff. After that, it’s just a long stretch of very good, clean surf. No gaps to worry about.

Rusty.
