The Lowdown

Right, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up. We’ve got one spot firing, and it’s a proper run of swell.

The action kicks off Monday, August 17th, with a clean 5ft SSW swell at Temples. The water’s sitting at 78°, which is just a touch cooler than the long-term average for this time of year – nothing wild, but noticeable if you’ve been in the water regularly. This break is a reef and point setup, and with the swell direction coming from the SSW and the optimum being SW, it’s a good match. The energy’s moderate (893), and with that ESE offshore breeze, it’s looking clean.

Then it steps up. Tuesday morning, August 18th, the swell jumps to 6ft from the SSW, with a proper 16-second period. This is groundswell, and it’s got some grunt. The energy is now moderate to strong (2883). Perfect for a point break like this. Still offshore winds. By Wednesday, August 19th, we’re looking at 8ft to 8ft from the SSW, periods stretching out to 17-18 seconds, and energy over 3500 – that’s strong, powerful surf. This is getting real. The wind stays offshore through Thursday, August 20th, with similar 8ft to 8ft SW swell.

Now, for the standout. Look no further than Wednesday, August 19th, and Thursday, August 20th. That combo of 8ft to 8ft SSW/SW swell, those long 16-18 second periods, and constant light offshore breeze – it’s going to be clean, lined-up, and powerful. This is the pick of the entire run. It’s advanced territory at this size and period, so if you’re comfortable with that, get amongst it. The break can get crowded sometimes, so expect company if the conditions are as good as they look.

Friday, August 21st, the swell dips a bit in the morning to 5ft but jumps back to 8ft by the afternoon with a 17-second period. Energy is still strong (3376). The pattern holds through the weekend with 6ft to 7ft SSW swell and consistent offshore winds, though Sunday afternoon sees a cross-off breeze, which is still clean but a little less direct.

The second week keeps the swell alive. Monday, August 24th, through Tuesday, August 25th, we see 6ft to 6ft SSW swell with 15-16 second periods. Energy dips a bit but stays moderate to strong. Wednesday, August 26th, lightens up to 5ft, but then Thursday, August 27th, builds back to 6ft from the SSW. Friday, August 28th, holds at 6ft. The weekend of August 29th and 30th sees consistent 6ft to 7ft SSW swell, with some lighter winds on the Saturday afternoon (gentle breeze) and a nice cross-off on Sunday morning that should keep things tidy.

Looking further ahead, August 31st rolls in with an absolute cracker: 5ft in the morning but with a monster 21-second period – that’s very long-period groundswell. Energy is through the roof (3469). It builds to 7ft in the afternoon with a 19-second period. This is going to be serious, straight-shooting lines at the point, perfect for this break. And then September 1st, Tuesday, tops out with 8ft from the SW, 17-18 second periods, and energy over 4000 (strong to very strong). These last few days are a long-range outlook, so the promise is there, but it’s still a ways off. If it comes together, it’ll be a classic.

Overall, there’s no gap here – the surf is on from day one. The best of the best are those middle days of the first week and the very end of the forecast. Don’t sleep on it.

Rusty.
