The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards at Temples, but it’s definitely one for the experienced crew. This is a reef and point set-up that’s exposed to the SW, and the optimum direction is SW, so when the energy lines up, it’s on.
Water temp is sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there.
The action kicks off straight away on Wednesday the 15th of July. Morning sees a clean 7 ft SSW groundswell with a proper long 16-second period, driven by a consistent offshore E breeze at 12 mph. The combined energy reading is a solid 2084 (moderate to strong), and the conditions are glassy. This is the standout session – excellent for experienced surfers, with that long period making for well-shaped, powerful lines. The offshore wind will keep it smooth as silk. Afternoon drops a touch to 6 ft, but still with that same quality.
Thursday the 16th holds 5 ft SSW groundswell in the morning, dropping to 5 ft SW in the arvo, period still hanging around 15 seconds. Steady offshore ESE wind at 16 mph keeps it clean. The energy drops into the 1100s (moderate), but it’s still a solid, surfable day.
Friday the 17th sees a bit of a freshening breeze – ESE at 19 mph in the morning – but still offshore and clean. Swell sits at 5 ft to 4 ft SW, with a long 16-second period on the afternoon. It’s a step down in size, but the quality remains.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are smaller, with swell around 4 ft to 5 ft, period dropping to 13-14 seconds, and a fresh 19 mph breeze. The energy numbers dip into the 700s to 900s (moderate). There’s a risk of thunderstorms, so keep an eye on the sky. Still surfable, but not the standouts.
Now, here’s a second pop-up. Monday the 20th of July brings a pulse of bigger SSW swell – 7 ft in the morning, building to 7 ft in the afternoon, with a 16-17 second period. The combined energy jumps to 2640 (strong) in the morning. This is a big, powerful groundswell, definitely for experienced surfers only. The wind is fresh offshore at 19 mph, but there are rain showers about. It’s a serious session if you’re up for it.
From Tuesday the 21st through to the end of the month, the swell settles into a more consistent but smaller pattern. Heights range from 3 ft to 6 ft, mostly SSW direction, with periods bouncing between 14 and 8 seconds. The wind stays offshore the whole time, but it’s a fresh breeze, 16-22 mph. The energy numbers are moderate, mostly in the 700s to 1200s. There’s a real shift around the 27th and 28th of July, when the swell swings to the SE with a very short 8-second period – that’s windswell, and the energy drops right off. It’s still surfable, but it loses that grunt. The very end of the month, on the 30th of July, drops right down to 2 ft, albeit with a very long 20-second period from the SW – a ghostly, clean little wave.
Overall, the best is Wednesday the 15th and Monday the 20th. Both are serious, powerful groundswells with clean offshore wind. Crowds are listed as “sometimes” at Temples, so it’s not always packed, but on days like these, you can expect a few crew out. The rest of the window is consistent, smaller, and still clean, but nothing beats that first and second pulse.
Rusty.
