The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got one spot firing for the whole run: Temples. This is a reef and point setup that’s fairly consistent and it’s going to be the main show. The water is sitting at 78°F, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year.
The action kicks off on Sunday, the 23rd of August. We’re looking at a solid 6ft SW groundswell rolling in from the SSW, with a long 15-second period. The wind is out of the SE at 16 mph, blowing straight offshore, so the surface will be clean. The combined energy is pumping at 2256 (moderate-strong). This is excellent surf, but at this size, it’s for the experienced crew only.
Monday the 24th holds steady with similar 6ft to 6ft SSW swell, long 16-second periods, and consistent offshore winds. The energy stays high (1700-1766). Tuesday the 25th sees a slight drop to 6ft, but still that clean offshore flow and long period, making for great waves all day.
Wednesday the 26th, the swell drops a touch more to 5ft-5ft, and the period shortens to 14 seconds. The offshore wind holds, but the energy dips to 845-999 (weak to moderate). Still very good, just not as pumping.
Thursday the 27th is a bit of a curveball. The swell drops to 4ft-4ft, but the period jumps to a very long 20 seconds. The wind goes cross-offshore from the SSE at 9 mph. The afternoon session sees the energy spike back up to 2579 (moderate-strong). That long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely at this point break, but it might be a bit straight for other setups.
Now, Friday the 28th of August is the standout. The swell jumps to 8ft from the SSW, with a 16-second period. The morning has a gentle offshore breeze from the SE at 9 mph, and the energy is a massive 3612 (strong). This is big, powerful, and clean. At 8ft, this is expert territory only. The afternoon turns cross-offshore, but it's still a solid session.
Saturday the 29th backs off a bit to 6ft in the morning, dropping to 5ft by afternoon, but the offshore wind returns and the energy is still solid (1226-2240). The following week sees a repeating pattern: solid SSW swells in the 4ft to 7ft range, with near-constant offshore winds, especially on the 1st and 2nd of September where we get 6ft-7ft SW swell with 16-17 second periods and gentle offshore breezes. The energy is consistently in the 2000s (strong).
There’s a bit of a gap around the 4th of September, with smaller 4ft swell and less energy (644-721), but it picks right back up on the 5th and 6th of September with 6ft-7ft SSW swell and solid energy.
Overall, if you’re an advanced surfer, get on it. The 28th of August is the big one, but the first few days of September are also looking proper. It’s a consistent run, so you’ll score. The crowds are listed as “sometimes” at Temples, so expect some company, but nothing insane.
Stay stoked.
