The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a stretch of days where the surf is just going to be a bit of a grind. The swell is on the small side and the wind is a strong offshore breeze, which keeps things clean, but the wave heights are nothing to write home about. Starting Sunday, July 19, we’ve got 4.3ft of SW swell at Temples, a reef and point setup that loves a solid SW groundswell. The water is 80.2°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. The problem is the combined swell energy is only 747 – weak. It’s a marginal call, and honestly, not worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate for a groove.
Monday, July 20, picks up a little, with the swell jumping to 5.2ft in the morning and 6.9ft in the afternoon, coming from SSW. The period stretches to 14 and 16 seconds, so you’re getting some proper groundswell energy. The combined energy hits 2078 and 2313 – moderate. Still, the wind is a fresh 30 km/h offshore, keeping the surface clean. It’s better, but still just a 3 out of 10 for me. Tuesday and Wednesday follow a similar pattern: 5.6ft dropping to 4.3ft, always that solid offshore wind, but the scores stay low. The break is consistent and offers a good wave, but the swell isn’t quite there yet.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are flat-ish, with swell dropping to 2.6ft – 3.6ft. The period is still long (14-17 seconds), but the energy is low (651-937). This is a blank run for a few days. Nothing to get excited about.
Then Saturday, July 25, we get a little bump: 4.3ft in the morning, 3.9ft in the afternoon, with a 15-second period from SSW. The combined energy is 1625 (moderate). Still, the wind is offshore and clean. It’s a step up, but still not a standout.
Now, Sunday, July 26, things shift. The swell direction goes SE, and the period drops to 8 seconds. That’s short-period windswell. The height is 5.2ft to 5.6ft, but the energy is only 727 and 631. This is weaker, less organised stuff. Monday the 27th stays similar, with 4.9ft and 4.6ft. Not great.
There’s a gap from Monday the 27th through to Tuesday the 28th where it’s pretty marginal. Then Wednesday, July 29, we start to see the real promise. The swell comes back from SSW, 4.6ft, with a period of 15 seconds. The wind is still offshore, and the combined energy is 1041 (moderate). But it’s the afternoon of July 29 that gets a nod: 4.6ft, 14-second period, 1184 energy, and the note says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” That’s the first real glimmer of quality.
The standout window, though, is the end of the month and into August. On Thursday, July 30, we’ve got a 19-second period swell from SSW, 3.3ft to 4.3ft. The energy jumps to 1364 and 1673. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’s clean but not pure glass. Still, the long period means better shaped waves, and Temples being a reef/point is the perfect spot for it.
Friday, July 31, is where it really starts to cook. 4.6ft, 18-17 second period, and the energy is 1550 and 1414. The wind is offshore, 25 km/h. The call is “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is a proper session.
But the big one – the absolute standout – is the weekend of August 1 and 2, and into Monday, August 3. On Saturday, August 1, we’ve got 7.2ft in the morning, 8.2ft in the afternoon, from SSW, with a 17-18 second period. The combined energy is 3120 and 3573 – strong. Sunday, August 2, stays at 7.9ft and 7.2ft, with energy over 3000. The wind is moderate offshore, 25 km/h. The call for Sunday afternoon is “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” That’s a 5 out of 10, and the best score in the whole run.
Monday, August 3, is the cherry on top. 4.3ft in the morning with a 21-second period – that’s very long period groundswell – and the energy is 3258. The afternoon jumps to 7.9ft, 19-second period, and a massive 4834 energy. The wind is offshore, 20
