The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking.
Overall, we’ve got a solid run of small to medium southwest groundswell coming through, with a good persistent offshore wind. The quality is a bit of a mixed bag but the consistency is there, and there are some real gems if you pick your days right. The standout is clearly the end of the month and the start of August, but let’s take it step by step.
We start on Saturday, 18 July, and it’s okay but nothing to write home about. Swell is 4.6 ft from the SW with a period of 15 seconds, which is proper long-period groundswell. That’s a lot of energy in the water (combined energy 912), and it’s offshore all day with a fresh breeze, so it’ll be clean. But the forecast says it’s marginal, likely due to tricky tides or the long period making the reefy point a bit straight. It’s a wave for the experienced crew.
Sunday, 19 July, is similar – 4.3 ft SW, 13-second period, still clean with a fresh offshore. The energy drops a bit (754). It’s rideable. Not a day to rush out for, but you won’t be skunked.
Monday, 20 July, is where things start to get interesting. The swell climbs to 5.2 ft in the morning, then jumps to 6.9 ft in the afternoon from the SSW with a 16-second period. The combined energy is strong at 2317. That’s a proper push of energy, and the wind is still offshore and clean. This is your first real highlight of the week. The waves will have some punch, so it’s more for the advanced surfer.
Tuesday, 21 July, holds 5.6 ft SSW in the morning, easing to 5.2 ft in the afternoon. Energy is still moderate-strong (1303-1148). Offshore wind holds. It’s a solid, grunty day.
Then we get a slight drop mid-week. Wednesday, 22 July, shows 4.3 ft and 3.3 ft, still clean. The morning is actually flagged as “very good surf conditions” with moderate wind, which is a nice surprise for the smaller size. Thursday, 23 July, is small, 3.6 ft dropping to 2.6 ft, but again the afternoon is flagged as “very good.” The energy is low (516) so it’s a fun, mellow day for the longboard or a mid-length.
Friday, 24 July, and Saturday, 25 July, stay small and clean, around 3.0 ft to 3.9 ft. The wind is still offshore, so it’s clean but weak. Good for a cruise, but not a standout.
Now, Sunday, 26 July, brings a shift. We get a 6.9 ft swell from the SE, but look at the period – only 8 seconds. That’s short-period windswell, and the combined energy is still decent (905), but it’s not the same quality. The wind is still offshore, but this is more of a close-out beach break kind of wave. Not ideal for the point.
Monday, 27 July, is a weird one. The swell dips to 3.6 ft, but the period blows out to 21 seconds! That is a very long-period groundswell. Combined energy is 1466. For a reef and point like Temples, that long period could make it a bit too straight and fast, but if you’re in the right spot, it could be a freight train. The wind is offshore, so it’s clean.
Tuesday, 28 July, into Wednesday, 29 July, is where it all comes together. On Tuesday afternoon, we have 5.2 ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, combined energy of 1666, and a moderate offshore breeze. The forecast says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is the first real standout. Wednesday, 29 July, keeps 5.2 ft with a 16-second period, energy 1357, and again “excellent” conditions. This is top-tier stuff for the advanced surfer.
Thursday, 30 July, drops back to 3.6 ft and then 2.6 ft, with a long period again. Energy is lower (896-952). Not a highlight.
The real standout is the final stretch. Friday, 31 July, has 6.6 ft to 6.9 ft SSW groundswell, 17-second period, and combined energy roaring at 2664-2485. That’s a heavy, powerful swell. The wind is a moderate offshore. This is a big day. The Saturday, 1 August, holds 6.2 ft to 5.9 ft SW with 16-15 second period, and the energy is still very strong (2010-2230). The forecast says “excellent” for both days. This is the best of the whole run. Sunday, 2
