The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming through on the exposed reef and point at Temples. This stretch of coast is set to pump for a good ten days or more, starting this Friday morning and rolling right through the first week of September. The water temperature is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The pattern kicks off Friday the 21st of August with a solid, clean SSW swell in the 5 ft range and a very long period of 18 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, meaning better shaped waves but longer lulls between sets. The wind’s offshore from the ESE at 12 mph, which is going to leave the surface glassy. The combined swell energy is a strong 2588. This is advanced-only territory – the size and power aren’t for beginners.

Saturday the 22nd keeps it going with a similar SSW swell around 7 ft, period dropping slightly to 16 seconds, still with offshore ESE winds at 16 mph in the morning and SE 12 mph in the afternoon. Clean and punchy all day.

Sunday the 23rd is more of the same – 6 ft SSW swell, 15-second period, offshore SE winds at 12 mph. Excellent, consistent conditions for those who can handle it.

Monday the 24th starts with clean 6 ft SSW swell at 16 seconds and offshore SE winds, but the afternoon turns a little scratchy with cross-offshore wind at 12 mph. Still rideable, but the morning is the pick.

Tuesday the 25th sees the swell easing slightly to 6 ft, but the period holds at 16 seconds, and we get offshore ESE winds again in the morning – nice and clean. Afternoon is offshore too, so it’s a solid day.

From Wednesday the 26th, the swell starts to drop back a touch – down to 5 ft and 14-second period – and the wind goes cross-offshore at times, so it’s less perfect but still surfable for the experienced crew.

There’s a bit of a lull from Thursday the 27th through to Monday the 31st, with swell sizes dropping under 4 ft and cross-offshore winds becoming more common. The energy drops way down into the 900s to 1200s. Not worth getting excited about.

But hold onto your board – Tuesday the 1st of September brings a big comeback. We’re looking at 7 ft to 7 ft SSW swell, 18-second period, and clean offshore SE winds all day. That’s the standout of the whole run – strong energy readings over 3000, glassy conditions, and proper groundswell wrapping into the point. This is expert territory, and it will be a session to remember.

Wednesday the 2nd keeps the size at 7 ft with 16-second period, morning offshore winds, but the afternoon goes cross-offshore, so get in early.

Thursday the 3rd is more moderate at 6 ft to 6 ft, 14-second period, with cross-offshore winds – still clean enough for a good paddle.

Then, the real cherry on top – Friday the 4th of September. The morning brings a massive 8 ft SSW swell with a 20-second period. The wind is light offshore at 6 mph. The combined swell energy is a beastly 6169. This is exceptional, but only for experts – too big and powerful for anyone else. The afternoon bumps up to 10 ft, but the wind goes cross-offshore, so the morning is the absolute peak.

Saturday the 5th finishes the run with a 8 ft SSW swell, 16-second period, gentle offshore winds – still excellent for experienced surfers.

The best of the best? Lock in Friday the 4th of September morning, and Tuesday the 1st of September for the cleanest, most powerful groundswell with perfect offshore wind. Crowds at Temples are sometimes an issue, so expect some company. Grab it while it’s firing.

Rusty.
