The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I've got a look at the surf on the cards for us over the next couple of weeks. It's a real treat, with a solid run of good-to-excellent conditions lining up, especially for the experienced crew. The water is sitting at 78°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The action kicks off strong on Wednesday afternoon at Temples (reef and point). We've got a solid 8 ft SSW groundswell wrapping in with a very long 17-second period, and the energy is pumping hard at a 4140 (moderate to strong wave energy). The wind is a clean offshore ESE breeze at 16 mph, which is a beautiful thing. This is a cracking setup, but it's an advanced wave, and with the size, it's definitely for experienced surfers only. The crowds can show up sometimes, but with conditions this good, it's worth the paddle.
Thursday morning is much of the same – 8 ft SW swell with a 16-second period, and the offshore ESE wind is still blowing at 16 mph. The energy is still massive at 3514. Thursday afternoon the wind drops a tad to 12 mph, but it's still offshore and clean, with the swell holding at 8 ft from the SW. This is a proper run of surf.
Friday morning sees a slight drop to 5 ft, but the period is a very long 18 seconds, and the wind is still offshore. The energy is still strong at 2603. The afternoon picks right back up to 8 ft, again with a 17-second period and offshore winds. This is top-tier stuff.
Saturday morning holds strong at 7 ft with a 16-second period, but the wind shifts to a cross-offshore SE breeze by the afternoon. It's still clean, but the wind direction isn't as perfect. The energy eases a bit to 2220.
Sunday and Monday are still very good, with 6 ft to 6 ft SSW swells, long periods, and offshore winds in the mornings. The energy is still in the 1700-2200 range. The afternoons do get a bit cross-offshore, but the mornings are the pick.
We roll into the second week, and the theme continues. Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th still have 5 ft to 6 ft SSW swells with offshore winds, though the energy starts to drop through the 900s. By Thursday the 27th, the swell drops to 4 ft and then 3 ft, but the afternoon sees a very long 20-second period, which is interesting. The energy is 1480. The wind is light and cross-offshore.
Then, Friday the 28th of August, we get a proper spike back up. The morning shows 8 ft from the SSW with a 16-second period, and the energy jumps to 2799. The wind is a light SSE cross-offshore. The afternoon holds 7 ft with the same period. This is a standout for the back half of the outlook.
The end of the run on the 31st and into September 1st is another real highlight. The 31st afternoon has 7 ft SW swell, a 19-second period, and offshore winds, with energy at 3206. September 1st brings 8 ft with a 17-second period, all day, with offshore winds and energy over 3000. This is for the advanced crew again.
If you're looking for the absolute best, the first few days are hard to beat, and that final spike on the 31st and 1st of September is a cracker. The mornings are nearly always the cleaner call. For the bigger days over 8 ft, it's experts only. For the 5 ft to 8 ft range, it's still a solid step up. The long periods mean the sets will be well-spaced, making the paddle out easier, and the waves will have plenty of grunt.
Rusty.
