The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checkin’ in from the local line-up. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a solid run of groundswell heading our way, so the boardshorts are stayin’ wet.
We’re kickin’ things off on Wednesday the 19th of August and straight away, Temples is lightin’ up. This is a reef and point set-up, so it handles a solid SW groundswell beautifully. We’re talkin’ a strong 8ft to 8ft swell from the SSW with a long period of 17 to 18 seconds – that’s proper energy, real grunty stuff. The combined energy is rippin’ hard at 3575 to 4121 (strong), so this ain’t for the faint-hearted. The wind is ESE and offshore, keepin’ it clean. The water’s sittin’ at 78°, which is about 1° cooler than average for this time of year, so nothin’ wild, just a touch refreshing. This is top-tier, heavy surf for experienced surfers only. If you’re not solid, give this one a miss.
Thursday the 20th holds that same vibe – 8ft to 8ft from the SW, period droppin’ slightly to 16 seconds, but still solid. Offshore wind again. It’s gonna be a rippin’ couple of days.
Friday the 21st sees a bit of a dip in the morning with a 5ft swell, but the afternoon jumps back up to 8ft. Saturday and Sunday keep that 6ft to 7ft range goin’, with clean conditions and offshore winds through most of it. Sunday afternoon the wind swings cross-off, but still clean. This whole first week is a dream run for anyone with some experience.
Monday the 24th through Tuesday the 25th, we’re still seein’ 6ft to 6ft SSW groundswell with that nice offshore ESE wind. Good, consistent, fun waves.
Then we hit a quieter patch from Wednesday the 26th into the 27th. Swell drops to 5ft, then 3ft to 3ft. The energy drops right off (639 to 1282, weak to moderate). The wind goes cross-off. It’s still surfable, but you’ll be workin’ for it. This is where the lull settles in for a few days.
But hold on… Friday the 28th of August is a proper standout. We get a 8ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period, and the wind is glassy. Yes, glassy. That’s a major positive – the combined energy is back up to 2821 (strong). This is an absolute gem of a day for the experienced crew. Saturday the 29th is still solid at 6ft.
We have another small-ish patch over the weekend of the 30th and 31st, but then Monday the 31st into Tuesday the 1st of September is the other big highlight. Monday afternoon sees a 6ft SW groundswell with a very long 20-second period and offshore wind. The energy jumps to 3981 (strong). That’s gonna be clean, powerful, and organized. Tuesday the 1st of September pushes back up to 8ft from the SW with 18-second period – another day for experts only. The consistency is there, and the wind stays offshore.
Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September ease back a touch, with 5ft to 6ft SSW swell, but the period is still long (16 to 19 seconds), and the wind remains offshore. Great, clean conditions to finish the run.
For the standout, I’d be lockin’ in the 28th of August for that glassy, heavy 8ft SW groundswell. And then the 31st of August into the 1st of September for that very long-period, clean, powerful swell. Two absolute crackers.
Keep in mind, Temples is fairly consistent, but it can get a crowd at times, so get out there early for the best of it.
Rusty, out.
