Alright, Rusty here again, now in feet and miles for you.
We’ve got a solid run of surf ahead at Temples, a reef and point break that’s exposed to the swell. The water temp is 81°, right about average for this time of year, so no surprises. This is a spot for experienced surfers, no doubt about it – the swell hangs around 6 ft on Sunday and that’s just the beginning.
Sunday the 5th kicks things off in style. Clean and clear with a moderate offshore breeze from the ESE. The swell is a solid 6 ft from the SSW, pushing in at 14 seconds. That’s a nice groundswell with good energy – combined energy reading of 1490 (moderate to strong), so plenty of push. The offshore wind is a major positive; those waves are going to be clean and well-shaped. This is the standout of the opening days – excellent for experienced surfers.
Monday the 6th still has surf, but the quality takes a small dip with a 4 ft morning and 6 ft afternoon, both with 16 mph offshore winds. The period is long – 16 to 17 seconds – which is proper groundswell. That’s great for a reef and point set-up like Temples; those long lines will wrap in nicely. The combined energy is up there (1325 to 1709), but there’s a note about questionable tide conditions, so pick your session.
Tuesday the 7th sees the swell drop a touch (5 ft) but the wind freshens to 19 mph. Still offshore, though, so it’s clean. Energy dips a bit (933-939) and the forecast is more marginal. Not the pick of the week.
Wednesday the 8th is another top contender. Swell bumps up to 7 ft to 7 ft from the SSW with a 15-16 second period. The offshore wind is moderate at 12-16 mph. The combined energy jumps to 1701 and 2123 – that’s serious power. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers again. This is a standout day, possibly even better than Sunday if you want a bit more size.
Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th keep the swell around 5 ft to 7 ft, but the wind cranks up to 16-22 mph. Still offshore, but it’s a fresh breeze, so it won’t be as glassy. A bit of rain and showers around too. The energy stays high (1658-2073) but the quality takes a hit. Good for the core crew, but not the absolute best.
Sunday the 12th is a definite drop-off – just 3 ft to 3 ft from the SSW, with a short 12-13 second period. Energy plummets to around 358-405. Worth a paddle if you’re desperate, but honestly, it’s a lull.
Monday the 13th brings the goods back in a big way. Morning 4 ft but the afternoon jumps to 6 ft from the SSW with a ridiculous 19-20 second period. That’s very long-period groundswell. The combined energy hits 2340 in the afternoon – massive. Moderate offshore breeze from the ESE. This is a major standout for the second week. Those long lines will wrap around the point beautifully. Mark it in your calendar.
Tuesday the 14th holds size at 6 ft to 7 ft, with a 16-17 second period, but the wind is up to 19 mph. Still offshore, but fresh. Energy is still strong (1974-2582). Good, but not as clean as Monday afternoon.
From Wednesday the 15th to Friday the 17th, there’s a gradual decline. Swell drops from 5 ft down to 4 ft. The period stays decent (14-16 seconds) but the wind is a fresh 16-19 mph. Energy drops from 1486 to 715. Still some waves, but it’s fading.
Saturday the 18th sees a small reprieve – 4 ft to 4 ft with moderate offshore winds in the morning, and cross-off in the afternoon. Energy picks up to 936. Worth a look if you’re keen.
Sunday the 19th bumps back up to 5 ft to 6 ft from the SW, with a 15-second period. Offshore wind at 19 mph, but risk of thunderstorms. Energy is back up to 1203-1688. Not perfect, but there’s some size.
Monday the 20th winds it all down – 4 ft to 5 ft, 13-second period, 16-19 mph offshore winds. Energy tails off to 635-758. The end of the run.
The bottom line: If I had to pick the absolute best, it’s a toss-up between Sunday the 5th for that clean, moderate-sized opening, and Monday the 13th afternoon for the sheer power and long-period groundswell. Wednesday the 8th is also right up there. For experienced surfers, Temples is the spot. Crowds are possible – it gets busy sometimes – but with that quality, it’s worth a bit of company.
