The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking the 16-day outlook. We’ve got a proper swell coming in right from the start, but it’s for the big dogs.
The first good surf is on Tuesday, July 14th. The swell is pumping out of the SSW, bringing in 6ft to 7ft of groundswell with a very long period of 17 to 18 seconds. The combined wave energy is strong (2448). That’s a lot of power. The wind is offshore from the ESE at 12 to 16 mph, so the waves will be clean and hollow. This is strictly for advanced surfers. The water is 80°, which is spot on for the season.
The absolute standout is Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning are the best of the bunch. You’re looking at 7ft of that long-period SSW groundswell, clean offshore wind, and the wave energy is pushing 2685 and 2119. That’s a solid, powerful, well-shaped wave. The break is Temples, a reef and point setup, which is perfect for a long-period swell like this. It’s going to produce long, rippable walls. Expect crowds here sometimes, because it’s a popular spot.
After that initial peak, it drops off. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th still have 5ft to 4ft of swell, but the wind picks up to 19 mph, making it a bit more work. The energy drops into the 1000s. By Saturday the 18th, the swell gets smaller, and we’re into a run of smaller, less consistent waves. From the 18th through to the 24th, the swell is around 4ft to 4ft, but the wind is often a fresh 16-19 mph. It’s clean, but the energy is moderate (in the 700-900 range). There’s a spike on the 20th with a 7ft SSW swell, but the wind is strong, so it’s not as clean.
The end of the outlook, around the 28th and 29th of July, shows a bit of a comeback. On the 28th, you’ve got a 3ft SSW groundswell with a very long 19-second period, and the wind drops to 12 mph. The energy is back up to 1029. Then on the 29th, the wind goes light and cross-off at 9 mph. That’s a promising setup for clean, fun waves, but it’s a long way out, so don’t bank on it yet.
So, the first two days are the real deal – big, powerful, and clean. The rest of the week is smaller and clean, but not as exciting. The final few days look like a nice, clean, long-period swell, but we’ll have to see how it shapes up.
Rusty.
