The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our region. We’ve got a solid run of surf lined up, but it’s not going to be a non-stop party. There’s a bit of a lull right at the start, but once it kicks in, it’s all about Temples. This is a reef and point set-up that handles a south-west swell best, and that’s exactly what we’re getting.
The first real action we can talk about kicks off on Saturday, July 18th. The wave energy is moderate (949 units), with a 5ft swell from the south-west. The water is sitting at a very warm 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The wind is a clean, moderate offshore from the ESE, which is a major positive. That said, the surf report is calling it marginal, and the scores are nothing to write home about. It’s a start, but not the standout.
Sunday the 19th looks similar, with a fresh offshore breeze and 4ft swell. The energy drops a little (747 units), but the wind stays clean. Monday the 20th is where things start to lift. The swell pushes to 7ft by the afternoon, with a strong 16-second period from the south-southwest. That’s a proper groundswell, and the wave energy jumps to 2309 units. It’s a bit more size, but still on the edge of marginal according to the reports. The wind is a moderate offshore, so it’ll be clean.
Now, we hit a bit of a flat spot. From Tuesday the 22nd through to Thursday the 24th, the swell drops under 4ft, and the energy barely breaks 700 units. The wind stays offshore, but the ocean just doesn’t have the push. It’s a waiting game.
The real standout for the first week lands on Friday, July 31st. The morning session at Temples is looking excellent for experienced surfers. We’ve got a solid 5ft swell from the south-west, with a very long 18-second period. That’s pure groundswell energy, and the combined energy reads 2014 units – moderate to strong. The wind is a moderate offshore from the SE. Just be aware, on a reef and point like this, a long-period swell like that can wrap in beautifully, but it also means long lulls between sets. The crowds are a possibility here, so factor that in.
But the absolute best of the whole run, the one that’s got me pacing, is Saturday, August 1st. This is a big one. The swell is pushing 8ft from the south-west, with a 17 to 18-second period. The wave energy is cranked up to 4173 units. That’s strong to very strong energy. This is expert territory – anything over 8ft is only for the experienced crew. The wind is a fresh offshore from the ESE, keeping it clean. This is a full-on session for the brave.
Sunday, August 2nd, it backs off a touch to 7ft, but still with strong energy (3133 units) and a fresh offshore wind. It’s a solid follow-up, but the big Saturday is the one to circle.
So, if you’re planning around this, the first few days are average. The middle of the week is a definite gap. But the final day of July and the first of August are the real deal. Keep an eye on the long-range forecasts, because that Saturday is a promising, powerful swell, but it’s a long way out, so the details might shift. Stay stoked.
Rusty.
