The Lowdown
Right. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Temples.
This is a solid run of surf, starting from Saturday the 22nd of August. No gap to speak of – it’s go time from the get-go. The water temperature is sitting at 78°F which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year, about 2°F below average, so nothing too wild.
Saturday morning, the 22nd, kicks off with a proper SSW groundswell, 7ft at 16 seconds. That’s a long-period swell, full of energy, and it’s lining up nicely with the optimum SW direction for this reef and point break. The combined energy is strong at 2415, and with a clean ESE offshore breeze, it’s going to be beautiful. The sets will have some punch and the lineup will be fairly consistent. For experienced surfers, this is the real deal. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so keep an eye out.
The swell stays solid through Sunday the 23rd, dropping a touch to 6ft but still with that lovely 15-second period and gentle offshore winds, making for clean, powerful lines. The energy is still strong all weekend.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th see the swell holding around 6ft to 6ft, but the wind swings cross-offshore, making conditions a little less perfect. Still clean, but not as glassy. The energy is moderate to strong, and the wave quality is still there, just a notch down.
Wednesday the 26th drops a bit to 5ft to 5ft, still offshore winds, but the period shortens to 14 seconds. The energy is moderate (918). Still good surf, but not the standout.
Now, Thursday the 27th is a real treat. The morning has 4ft at 16 seconds, but the afternoon is where it gets interesting – 4ft at a very long 20 seconds, combined energy jumps to 2196, and the wind is offshore. This is a very long period groundswell, perfect for a reef and point like Temples. The waves will have shape, power, and long gaps between sets. A true gem.
Friday the 28th brings a bigger pulse, 8ft at 16 seconds, but the wind is cross-offshore. The energy is strong (3681), but the quality is marginal. That’s big, powerful, and a bit messy – only for the experienced crew.
The best of the best, the true standout, is Saturday the 1st of September. The morning has 7ft of SW swell at 18 seconds, with a light ESE offshore breeze. The energy is very strong at 3345. Sunday the 30th of August is a solid day, but the 1st of September is the one. It’s a big, clean, powerful groundswell from the optimum direction. It’s a full week away, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but it looks absolute magic. The following Sunday the 6th of September also has an 8ft pulse at 17 seconds, but with cross-offshore winds, so it’s big and powerful but not as clean.
Overall, there’s a lot to love here. The first weekend and the 1st of September are the ones to circle.
