The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards for Temples. This is a reef and point set-up that loves a good SW groundswell, and we’re seeing a consistent, long-period pulse from the SSW that’s got some serious energy behind it. The water temp is sitting right around 78°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The action kicks off on Monday, August 24th. Morning session sees a clean 6ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, and the wind is a steady offshore breeze from the ESE. That’s a recipe for some real quality lines. The combined energy is pumping at 1766, so there’s plenty of power. This is advanced territory at that size, so take your A-game. The afternoon stays clean with similar conditions.
Tuesday, August 25th eases off just a touch to 6ft, but the period is still a very long 16 seconds. Offshore wind holds through the morning, making for another great day. The energy is still strong at 1330. The afternoon is looking good too, with a clean offshore flow.
Wednesday, August 26th sees the swell drop to 5ft and the period shortens to 14 seconds. The energy dips to moderate levels (895), but it’s still a clean, fun size with offshore winds. Solid for a mid-week paddle.
Now, Thursday, August 27th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is clean, but the wind goes cross-offshore. The swell is a smaller 4ft from the SW, but the period jumps back to 16 seconds, giving it a surprising amount of energy (1204). The afternoon, however, gets a spike in energy to 2872 with a 5ft SSW swell, but the wind stays cross-offshore. It’ll be a bit lumpy, but there’s plenty of grunt.
Hold onto your boards for Friday, August 28th. This is the standout. The morning delivers a pumping 8ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, and the wind is solid offshore from the SE. The energy is massive at 3636. This is big, clean, powerful surf. This is for experts only—if you’re not confident, just watch. The afternoon stays at 8ft but the wind goes cross-off, so it won’t be as clean.
Saturday, August 29th back off to a more manageable 6ft, with a clean offshore wind all morning. The energy is still strong (1377). The afternoon drops to 5ft but stays glassy with offshore breeze. A great all-rounder.
Sunday, August 30th keeps the fun going with 5ft in the morning, easing to 4ft in the afternoon. Winds are offshore, so it’s clean, but the energy is dropping off.
The first week of September is looking promising. Monday, August 31st has a 4ft, 18-second groundswell in the morning—that’s a very long period, which will wrap beautifully around this point. Energy is solid at 1417. The afternoon picks up to 5ft but the wind goes cross-off.
Tuesday, September 1st brings a nice pulse back up to 6ft from the SW, 17-second period, and offshore winds in the morning. Energy is strong at 2330. This is another one for the experienced crew.
Wednesday, September 2nd is similar, with a 7ft SW swell, 16-second period, and offshore wind in the morning. The energy is 2269. Another day of solid, clean waves.
The pattern then settles into a very consistent run from Thursday, September 3rd through to Monday, September 7th. We’re looking at 5ft to 6ft SSW swells, 13 to 16-second periods, and mostly offshore winds in the mornings. The energy stays in the moderate to strong range (975 to 1581). It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s a long run of reliable, clean surf for the experienced surfer.
The real cherry on top for the whole outlook is Friday, August 28th morning. That 8ft, 16-second SSW swell with full offshore wind is the best on offer. That’s a top-tier session for those who can handle it.
If you’re looking for a longboard or a beginner-friendly wave, this isn’t your window. The smallest we get is 4ft, and a lot of it is over 5ft, so it’s all in the intermediate to advanced realm. The crowds are listed as “sometimes” at Temples, so you might get a few out, but with this much swell running, the lineup should spread out.
No kite surfing here—this is a paddle surfer’s paradise, especially when the wind is offshore.
Rusty.
