The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s look at what’s on the horizon.
We’re starting with Graveyards, a reef break that’s very consistent and open to the NW swell. The water’s at 59°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
The first chance to get out is Sunday, July 19th. The morning is a bit rough with cross-shore wind and chop, so skip it. But Sunday afternoon, the wind turns cross-off and the surf cleans up. The swell is 7ft from the WSW with a very long period of 16 seconds, and the combined energy is strong at 3799. That’s a proper groundswell, and it’ll be reeling down the reef. It’s a solid intermediate wave, but with that size and period, beginners should stay on the beach.
Monday, July 20th is the one to circle. The morning sees a light easterly cross-off breeze at 10 km/h (6 mph), with the swell dropping to 6ft from the WSW, still a 14-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 1432, but the conditions are clean and the wave comment says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon is just as good with a 6ft swell and the same clean setup. This is the best of the whole forecast – glassy, clean, and that reef is going to be singing.
Tuesday the 21st morning is a glassy gem: a 5 km/h (3 mph) NE breeze, swell at 4ft with a 13-second period, but the energy is low at 647. It’ll be fun on a fish or a groveler. The afternoon gets a bit of a cross-on wind, so lose that.
From Wednesday the 22nd, it turns ugly. The wind picks up and the swell gets messy. There’s a big spike on Saturday the 25th with a 10ft swell and 50 km/h (31 mph) winds – that’s a total washout, not for paddle surfing. The rest of the week into early August is mostly blown out with strong winds and chop. The only other glimmer is Thursday, August 1st, with a clean cross-off breeze and a 6ft swell, but it’s a long way off and the confidence is low.
Lock in Monday the 20th – that’s your wave.
Rusty.
