The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down Ruby Bay. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this is one of those outlooks where you’re gonna be sitting on the sand a lot. The next 16 days are looking mostly flat, with only a few tiny pulses that won't get your heart racing. We’ve got a big dead stretch from the 23rd of August all the way through to the morning of the 4th of September. That’s a long, quiet run.
Right now, on Friday the 21st of August, we’ve got a tiny 0.3ft swell coming in from the north with a long 16-second period. The energy levels are weak, at just (5). The water temperature is 53°F, which is about 1°F cooler than usual for this time of year, so pretty average, just a little on the chilly side. Morning winds are light offshore from the southwest, but the wave height is way too small to bother paddling out for.
Through Saturday the 22nd, we see a little bump in the afternoon. The swell stays small at 3ft from the north-northwest, with a short 6-second period, producing weak energy (34). However, the wind goes totally glassy – zero knots from the north. That’s the best condition we see all week, but the surf itself is still considered poor. If you’re a complete beginner and just want to sit in some clean, glassy water, this is your only window, but don’t expect to actually ride much.
The end of the month throws up a few more spikes, but they’re still not good. On Wednesday the 26th afternoon, we get a similar set up – glassy conditions with a 4ft north-northwest swell (period 6s, energy 84), and Thursday the 27th morning shows 4ft from the northwest (period 5s, energy 103) with glassy winds. The energy is finally crossing into the moderate range (103), but the period is still short, which means weak, crumbly waves. It’s effectively a lake out there, just with a bit of movement. By Friday the 28th, the swell picks up to 4ft from the north with a slightly better 8-second period, and the energy hits (207) – that’s moderate. But you’ve got heavy rain and a strong onshore wind from the north-northeast at 12 knots turning it to junk. Not worth it.
Honestly, there are no standout days here. The only time we see a hint of decent energy is that Friday the 28th morning, but the directions are messy and the wind kills it. Ruby Bay is a sheltered, north-facing point that rarely breaks, and this forecast proves it. For the whole 16-day run, you’re best off checking back later, or maybe tuning in for a glassy, tiny wave on the 22nd afternoon if you’re desperate for a float.
Keep your eyes on the horizon. This is Rusty, signing off.
