The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching Schnappers Point (Schnappers-Point) like a hawk. The next couple of weeks are pretty thin – a lot of flat spells with only a couple of moments that might get you excited.
The pattern’s simple: tiny and messy for days on end, then a quick pulse of bigger swell that’s a bit rough around the edges. Water temp is about average for this time of year.
Starting from Friday the 21st through Saturday the 22nd, it’s flat or near-flat – swell energy is barely a whisper (5 to 20). Don’t bother. Sunday the 23rd morning is the first real event: a 8ft swell from the NNW with a 9-second period, and the energy is pumping (1411). That’s expert territory, too big for beginners, and the wind is light cross-shore. But the forecast calls it “marginal” with tide concerns, so it’s a gamble.
After that, it’s back to tiny waves – mostly under 3ft – with weak energy (mostly under 100) through the rest of the week and into early September. There’s a glassy moment on Wednesday the 26th afternoon with 3ft from the NW (energy 61), but it’s ordinary. The best shot comes on Thursday the 3rd of September morning: 5ft from the north with a 7-second period and glassy conditions (energy 194). The clean glassy wind is a huge plus, and the wave state is “glassy.” It’s your best chance for a decent paddle, but quality is still a 1 out of 10. That afternoon, the same swell hangs (energy 210) but goes onshore.
No standout session here. Sunday the 23rd morning has the most size, but it’s dicey. Thursday the 3rd of September morning is the cleanest with some push. For a point break, the swell directions (NNW, N) aren’t ideal for the optimum NW. It’s a quiet run, but forecasts can always flip.
Rusty.
