The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down the waves at Schnappers Point.
First up, a quiet start. The first real surfable day doesn’t roll in until Sunday, August 23rd. Before that, we’ve got a four-day stretch of flat, poor conditions. Don’t waste your time.
Sunday morning the 23rd brings a 1.5m swell from the north, with a short 9-second period and moderate energy (339). The wind is a cross-shore from the WSW at 15 km/h, so it’ll be a bit choppy. Water temp is about 54°F, which is normal for the season. It’s a marginal session, only for the keen.
Monday the 24th morning cleans up with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SW at 10 km/h, but the swell drops to 0.4m from the NNW with a long 15-second period. The energy is weak (121). A long-period groundswell at a point break can give you some clean, lined-up waves, but it’s small.
The real standout is Saturday, August 29th morning. That’s the session. A solid 1.7m swell from the NNW, 7-second period, and strong energy (429). The wind is a light offshore from the SSE at 10 km/h, so it’s clean and glassy. The swell direction matches the optimum for this point break. This is the best of the whole forecast.
Later that afternoon, the wind goes glassy calm, but the swell drops to 0.9m with energy at 79. It’s ordinary.
Into the second week, Wednesday, September 2nd afternoon looks good. A 1.7m north swell, 7-second period, glassy calm, and moderate energy (263). A solid afternoon session.
Thursday, September 3rd morning is the next big one. A 1.5m north swell with a very long 11-second period and hefty energy (536). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the south at 10 km/h, so the waves will be clean and powerful. For a point break, this long-period groundswell will produce some proper, punchy waves. It’s a bit much for beginners, but for the experienced, it’s fantastic.
After that, it fades back to small, ordinary surf. The 4th of September sees the swell drop to 0.5m and onshore wind, so it’s back to waiting.
Bottom line: two standout sessions – the 29th August morning and the 3rd September morning. The rest is small and marginal. Get out there.
Rusty.
