Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Schnappers Point.
We’ve got a pretty grim run coming up, to be honest. The first real chance of a wave is this Sunday morning, July 5th, with a small 4ft swell from the north, but it’s a short period of 8 seconds. The wind is glassy, which is a beautiful thing, so the surface will be clean as a whistle. The water’s sitting at 56°, which is about average for this time of year. The overall energy is weak (231). It’s surfable, but it’s not going to get the heart racing.
After that Sunday morning, it’s a long, dry spell. The rest of the week, right through to the middle of the month, is a total write-off. We’re looking at tiny, almost non-existent waves, with the combined energy barely registering (0 to 12). There are a few days of glassy conditions, which is a kick in the teeth because there’s nothing to ride. This is a real quiet patch for the area.
Now, the real standout is a long way off, but it’s the one to circle on the calendar. On Monday, July 20th, the afternoon session is the pick of the whole 16 days. We’ve got a solid 8ft swell rolling in from the north-northeast, with a reasonable 10-second period. The wind is light and offshore from the SSE, so the face will be smooth and clean. The energy is strong (1175), and it’s rated as excellent for experienced surfers. Remember, at over 8ft this is getting into expert territory, so if you’re not confident, sit this one out or stick to the inside. The morning of that day is also a good call with a 5ft swell and gentle offshore winds (384 energy), so there’s a proper window of fun.
The build-up to that Monday gets a bit rough. On Saturday, July 18th, we’ve got some serious size but horrendous wind. A 7ft north swell is being hammered by a 22 mph cross-onshore wind, and by the afternoon it’s a 10ft NNW swell with a 28 mph onshore blast. The wind is going to turn it into a total mess. Honestly, for a point break like this, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, to sum it up: the first week is almost a total loss. The absolute best bet is the afternoon of Monday, July 20th, for the bigger, clean swell. The Sunday morning of July 19th offers a small, clean option to get wet, but it’s not the highlight. The long-range call on the 20th is promising, but we’ve got a long time to wait, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
