The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the coming days.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is gonna be a real struggle. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly any swell to speak of until the very end of the month. From now through to around the 28th of July, the surf is essentially flat or offering just tiny, weak bumps that aren’t worth paddling out for. You’ll be sitting on your board doing nothing. There’s a solid 10-day gap where there’s just no recommendation from me.
The only real action, and I mean the *only* action, starts to show up on Wednesday the 29th of July at Schnappers Point. This is a point break, fairly consistent, and it’s exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting at 54°F, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
On the morning of the 29th, we’ll see a pulse of swell – 4ft from the north. The energy is moderate (135), and the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and not super powerful. The wind is light and clean from the southwest, which is cross-offshore, so it’ll be ridable. It’s not a standout, just a small window of opportunity after a long wait.
Later that afternoon, the swell bumps up to 6ft from the north, but the period stays short at 7 seconds. The energy picks up to moderate (279). But here’s the catch – the wind goes onshore from the north-northwest. That’s going to mess it up. It’s better for the experts only if they’re desperate, but for most of us, it’s going to be a messy, onshore close-out. The crowds are listed as “often” here, so expect company.
After that, the 30th and 31st of July drop back down to small, weak 2ft to 3ft waves with onshore winds, so it’s back to the waiting game.
To be honest, the whole 16-day window is a real bust. The 29th of July is the only day that even has a pulse, but it’s not a day to write home about. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that Wednesday morning might give you a few grovelly ones, but keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
