The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a look at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and honestly, it’s a pretty grim picture for the region. We’re looking at a long, quiet spell with hardly any swell to speak of. The first few days are a total write-off, and there’s not much to get excited about even further out. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a bit of a bummer, but it happens. Let’s run through it.
The first real chance of anything surfable pops up on Thursday the 16th. In the morning we’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the NNW, with a pathetic 6-second period. The energy is super weak, barely registering a 57 (combined swell energy). The wind is light and cross-off from the SW, which will keep the surface clean, but with that little size and power, you’re just scratching for a knee-high dribbler. It’s not worth a paddle.
From Friday the 17th right through to Wednesday the 23rd, it’s a total wasteland. We’re talking nothing but flat, glassy spells and a few tiny ripples that won’t break. The combined energy values are mostly single digits, and the swell heights are all under 1ft. Honestly, don’t even bother checking the surf cam. There’s a good week and a half of nothing.
Then, around the 25th and 26th of July, we see a faint glimmer. On Saturday the 25th, the afternoon shows a 0.7ft swell from the NNW with a *very* long period of 17 seconds. The combined energy is still low at 29, but that period is interesting. The wind goes glassy, which is a major positive. This is a long-period groundswell, which at a point break like Schnappers Point could actually focus into a clean, if small, wave. It’s not going to be big, but it might offer a few glassy rollers. The following morning, Sunday the 26th, is similar, with a 0.7ft NNW swell at 16 seconds and a light cross-off breeze. The energy is 26.
Are these the best on offer? Well, yes, but that’s a low bar. They are the only days with any real swell period and glassy or clean conditions. The water temp is around 54°F, which is a touch cooler than average for this time of year, so a good 4/3 wetsuit is the call.
Beyond that, the outlook fades back into flatness. The period from the 27th to the 30th of July shows zero swell height and zero energy. So, if you’re looking for a surf, those few afternoons around the 25th and 26th are your only real bet, and even then, keep your expectations very low. The rest of the 16-day window is a total blank.
Rusty.
