The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty quiet stretch. Schnappers Point, a point break that’s fairly consistent, is your only option, and the surf is gonna be small and mostly a letdown for the first week and a half. Water temp is about normal for the season.
The first real chance of something rideable is on Friday, July 24th. The morning brings a NW wind at 12 mph and a bump in swell to 4 ft from the north, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the wind is onshore, so it’s messy. The afternoon cleans up a bit with a cross-offshore breeze and the swell dropping to 3 ft. The combined energy is moderate (113 in the morning, 55 in the afternoon), but it’s still just ordinary. Not worth rushing out for.
The next window is Wednesday, July 29th. The morning is glassy, with a 4 ft swell from the northwest, period of 6 seconds, and combined energy of 163 – that’s moderate. It’s surfable, but again, very ordinary. The afternoon sees the swell build to 6 ft from the NNW, period 7 seconds, and energy jumping to 355, but the wind is onshore and conditions are marginal. At 6 ft, it’s pushing into expert territory for beginners.
Thursday, July 30th, the morning is glassy again with a small 1 ft swell from the NNW, but a long 13-second period keeps the energy at 92. The afternoon picks up to 3 ft from the same direction, period 14 seconds, and energy of 378 – that’s a solid pulse of groundswell. The wind is onshore though, so it’s a bit of a tease. That long period (14 seconds) means the waves will have good shape and power, and at a point break it should handle it well. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
Honestly, there’s no real standout in this 16-day window. The best bet is probably Thursday, July 30th afternoon if you don’t mind the wind, or the glassy morning of July 29th for a small clean session. The rest is flat or junk. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a quiet run, but it won’t stay this way.
Rusty.
