The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Honestly, this outlook is a tough one to write. We’re looking at a long stretch ahead with very little to get excited about. The main spot on the radar is Schnappers Point, a point break that needs a solid NW swell to really fire, and while we do see a spike in size, the conditions around it are messy. The best chance for a wave is likely Friday the 28th of August, but even that comes with a fair few caveats.
Right off the bat, the water temp is 54°F, which is right about average for the time of year, so nothing wild there. Let’s get into the schedule.
The first few days are a write-off. Through Sunday the 23rd and into the middle of next week, we’ve got a smear of tiny, weak swell and cross or onshore winds. The swell energy is pitiful, reading as low as 8 to 36 (weak) on the combined energy scale. You’d be wasting your time.
Thursday the 27th shows a brief glassy moment in the morning with a 1ft NNW swell, but the period is a short 4 seconds, making for weak, crumbly waves. The afternoon brings a 12 mph NNW onshore, so it’s dead.
The standout, and really the only period worth paddling out for, is Friday the 28th of August. The morning delivers a solid 10ft swell from the NNW with a 9-second period. The combined energy jumps to 1809 (very strong), so there’s plenty of water moving. However, the wind is a cross-onshore from the NW at 9 mph, and the wave comment is “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” For a point break like Schnappers, that’s a lot of energy, but the onshore wind will chop it up. The afternoon sees the swell drop to 7ft (energy still high at 958), but still with that cross-onshore wind. This is solid, punchy swell, but the quality will be poor. It’ll be lumpy and harder to surf.
After that spike, it drops right back into the doldrums. From Saturday the 29th of August all the way through to Monday the 7th of September, we see hardly anything worth mentioning. Most days show tiny swell (0.3ft to 3ft) with weak energy (mostly below 100). There are rare moments of clean, offshore wind on the 3rd of September morning (3ft from the N, 8 seconds, energy 137), but the size is too small to make a point break like this work properly. It’s simply “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.”
Overall, the window is brutal. You’ve got one potential session on the 28th for the risk-takers who don’t mind a bumpy, high-energy ocean. After that, it’s a long, flat spell for the next week and a half. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
