The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Oaro over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, first things first – the water temp is sittin’ around 50°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year. No surprises there.
The first real action kicks off Friday morning, the 21st of August. We’ve got a clean 4-foot south swell rollin’ in with a 14-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the NNE at 3 mph. The energy is moderate at 604, and it’s gonna be a real treat – clean, glassy, and surfable. That’s your best bet for the first few days. Friday afternoon gets a bit cross-on and messy, so I’d be in the water early.
Saturday the 22nd is smaller – 3-foot to 3-foot from the south – but with that WNW offshore wind in the morning, it’ll be clean and fun for a slow session. Sunday the 23rd is a write-off: strong offshore winds at 28 mph make it nearly impossible to paddle into the tiny 1-foot waves.
Now, hold onto your board – Monday the 24th of August is a standout. The morning brings a solid 7-foot south swell, 14-second period, and glassy conditions with a light NW breeze. That’s some serious energy at 1839, and it’s excellent for experienced surfers. If you’re confident out there, this is the session to chase. The afternoon drops to 6 feet but stays glassy – still very good.
Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 27th sees the swell settle back to 3 feet to 3 feet, with clean conditions and light offshore or cross-off winds. Not huge, but consistent and fun. The south swell direction is a good match for Oaro’s exposed setup, and the period hangs around 10 to 16 seconds, giving the waves some proper shape.
Friday the 28th of August is a bit mixed – morning has a light cross breeze, but the afternoon goes dead calm with a 3-foot south swell, glassy as a mirror. That’s a sneaky good session if you’re patient.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th is patchy. Saturday morning has a glassy 4-foot south swell, but the afternoon turns cross-on. Sunday morning is tiny at 2 feet, but glassy – then Sunday afternoon picks up to 3 feet with a 15-second period and glassy conditions. That’s a solid afternoon session.
The first few days of September are promising. Tuesday the 1st has a clean 4-foot south swell with offshore WNW winds – tidy. Wednesday the 2nd has a bigger, longer-period south swell (4 feet, 15 seconds), and the afternoon sees a moderate offshore breeze from the WNW at 12 mph. That’s a standout session for the second week – clean, punchy, and a bit more juice.
Now, here’s a big one keep an eye on: Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning brings a massive 18-foot south swell, 13-second period, with clean offshore winds. The energy is through the roof at 16423. But that’s way too big for Oaro – really only for absolute experts, and even then, it’s gonna be a wild, dangerous paddle. The same goes for the afternoon. Not a beginner’s day.
Friday the 4th of September is the other big highlight. The morning has an 8-foot south swell, glassy as glass, with calm winds. That’s excellent for experienced surfers – powerful, clean, and lined up. The afternoon turns a bit cross-on and drops to 8 feet, so get in early.
The last couple of days, the 5th and 6th of September, drop back to 4 feet to 4 feet, but the wind turns cross or cross-on, making it marginal. Not worth getting excited about.
Best on offer:
Friday morning the 21st of August for clean, glassy 4-foot waves, and Monday morning the 24th of August for the bigger, glassy 7-foot south swell for experienced surfers. In the second week, Wednesday afternoon the 2nd of September and Friday morning the 4th of September are the standouts – clean, solid, and worth the wait.
Rusty.
