Alright, let’s chat about Kaifu Rivermouth in feet and miles per hour. The next couple of weeks start quiet, but there’s a proper pulse of size and clean conditions in the second week that’s worth setting an alarm for.
The water temp is 76°, which is only a touch cooler than what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing crazy.
We kick off flat. Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th are both tiny, with only 1ft of swell. Saturday afternoon bumps to 3ft, but with a short 5-second period and cross-on wind, it’s a mess. Sunday the 5th morning gives you 3ft from the SSW with glassy conditions – surfable but nothing special. Then a small lull.
Monday the 6th morning has 5ft of weak energy, but by the afternoon the energy picks up and the swell drops to 3ft. However, that’s a long 14-second period groundswell from the SE with glassy wind. That’s a nice little clean session for the river mouth.
From Tuesday the 7th things build. Tuesday morning sees 4ft onshore, but the energy is climbing. By Tuesday afternoon we’ve got 6ft, 17-second period, with moderate energy – cross-on wind though.
Wednesday the 8th is serious. Morning brings 10ft of SE swell with a 16-second period, and strong energy. That’s over 8ft, so expert-only. Onshore wind, so lumpy but powerful. The afternoon stays similar.
Thursday the 9th keeps the 10ft size going with heavy energy. Still onshore or cross-on.
Then the standout. Friday the 10th morning – this is the one. Kaifu Rivermouth sees 12ft of southerly swell, 17-second period, with very strong energy. And the wind? Glassy – dead calm. That is exceptional for experts only. The swell direction from the S lines up well with the optimum SE direction for this break. This spot is inconsistent, and with a 17-second period the long lulls between sets make paddling out easier, but the sets will be thick. Crowds can show up here sometimes.
Saturday the 11th morning stays big at 12ft, glassy again, with very strong energy. Another excellent session for experienced surfers.
Sunday the 12th morning drops to 7ft, with glassy wind and good energy – still excellent for experienced surfers.
After that, it fades. Monday the 13th onwards shrinks below 5ft, and by Wednesday the 15th through to the 18th we’re back to tiny 1ft to 2ft slop with poor conditions and weak energy.
So the standout is Friday the 10th morning – 12ft, glassy, groundswell, and huge energy. Get on it if you’re ready for the big stuff.
