Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Kaifu Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks. It’s a slow starter, but don’t switch off just yet.
The first few days are pretty grim. From Saturday the 4th through to Sunday the 5th, it’s junk. We’re talking tiny, weak waves and dodgy onshore winds. Not even worth wetting a leg rope. Monday the 6th morning shows a tiny glimmer with glassy conditions on a 0.6m swell, but the wave energy is still weak (191). It’s ordinary at best, so don’t rush down. That’s about 2ft.
Things start to build through Tuesday the 7th. The morning is still average, but Tuesday afternoon is where it finally clicks. The wind goes glassy, and we get a solid 5ft SE groundswell ramping up with a long 17-second period. The combined energy is moderate to strong (1442), and the report calls it excellent for experienced surfers. This is the first real standout. It’s a river mouth, and that long-period swell will push through with nice lines, but remember the place is inconsistent and can get a crowd – so be ready to share.
Now, the big show. Wednesday the 8th through to Friday the 10th is where it gets serious. Swell jumps to 10ft and then 12ft. That’s proper size, only for the experienced crew. The energy readings are massive (7328, 5019, 7636). Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th mornings have glassy conditions and clean, lined-up sets from the SSE and S. This is top-tier, heavy water. Short period? No, this is a deep, powerful groundswell with a period over 15 seconds. At a river mouth, those long-period swells wrap in beautifully. If you’ve got the skill, Friday morning the 10th is the pick of the whole forecast – glassy, 12ft, 17-second period, with exceptional conditions noted. Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on.
Saturday the 11th holds at 12ft with glassy morning conditions – still excellent – but Sunday the 12th sees it ease back to a still-chunky 8ft. The morning is glassy again with reasonably clean lines from the SSW. After that, Monday the 13th onward drops off fast. The swell fades into the 3ft range or less, and the quality nose-dives with onshore winds and cross-shore junk. Wednesday the 15th has a brief glassy moment on tiny 2ft waves, but it’s not going to be worth the paddle.
So, to wrap it up: the standout window is from Tuesday the 7th afternoon through to Sunday the 12th morning, with the absolute best sessions being Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th mornings. That’s big, clean, glassy groundswell at a tricky river mouth. If you’re not an expert, stay well clear on those days. After that, it’s back to the small stuff.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
