Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a yarn about what's on the cards for Kaifu Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks.
We've got a bit of a slow start, but there's some serious muscle building in the second half of the first week. The first few days are pretty flat and messy, so don't bother paddling out until we hit Tuesday the 7th. That's when the energy starts to kick in properly.
Tuesday the 7th of July is the first real standout. Early morning, we're looking at a clean 3ft groundswell from the SE with a very long 17-second period. The combined swell energy is powerful (868), and with glassy conditions and light winds, the river mouth should be offering up some proper, lined-up waves. This is the sort of session you wait for. A long period like that means the sets will have plenty of push, and the gaps between them will make getting out the back a whole lot easier. It's a bit inconsistent here, so you might have to be patient, but when they come, they'll be worth it. By the afternoon, the swell jumps to 5ft, but it gets a bit questionable with the tide and wind shifts.
The week builds from there. By Thursday the 9th, the swell is a solid 10ft from the SSE, and the combined energy is very strong (4772). This is getting into expert territory now – way too big for beginners. With onshore winds, it'll be a beast, but that's one for the big-wave chargers only.
Friday the 10th of July looks like the absolute peak of this run. We're talking a massive 13ft to 15ft swell from the S, with periods around 17-18 seconds. The energy readings are through the roof (9865 to 11127). This is serious, serious groundswell. The wind is onshore, so it'll be raw and powerful. Only for the truly experienced. The river mouth might hold, but it's going to be a battle.
After that peak, the swell slowly drops through the weekend and into the following week. Sunday the 12th of July morning is worth a mention – 8ft from the SSW, glassy, and with clean conditions. That's a fun size for experienced intermediates, but a far cry from the monster days prior.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. From about the 14th through to the 17th, the surf gets small and ordinary again. We're looking at waist-high stuff with weak energy and mixed conditions. Not worth the hassle.
There is a glimmer right at the very end of the outlook. Sunday the 19th of July morning shows 6ft from the SE with an 8-second period and absolutely *calm* glassy conditions. The combined energy is solid (837). For a Sunday morning session that looks clean and punchy, that could be a real treat, and the crowds here are sometimes an issue, so that early glass-off will be the ticket. It's a week and a half away, so don't book your flights yet, but it's got potential.
So, to sum it up: the early week is a write-off, Tuesday the 7th morning is your best shot for quality, clean waves, and Friday the 10th is the big, dangerous, expert-only highlight of the whole run.
Rusty.
