Alright, Rusty here again, looking at Kaifu Rivermouth. This is an inconsistent river mouth break that needs a lot of things to line up. The water temp is 76°F, running a touch cooler than average for July – nothing extreme.
The first few days through July 7th are a total dud. We’re talking tiny surf – 1ft of slop from the ESE on Saturday morning, then a messy 3ft SE swell with a period of only 4 seconds in the afternoon. Sunday and Monday are more onshore junk with weak wave energy in the 34 to 61 range. Don’t even bother.
On Monday afternoon, July 6th, you’ll see the first sign of life: a 3ft SE swell with a much longer period of 14 seconds, with light cross-off wind. Energy hits 342 – moderate. Still not a standout, but you can see some lines forming.
Now for the big call. This is for experts only. Thursday morning, July 9th, we get a proper highlight. Swell hits 12ft from the SSE, period of 16 seconds, with glassy light ENE wind. Combined energy is huge at 7158. This is big, clean, and powerful. Over 8ft, so only for experienced chargers. A river mouth loves a long-period groundswell like this.
Friday morning, July 10th, is even better for the experts. Swell is 13ft from the south, period 17 seconds, and the wind is glassy from the ENE again. Energy is a massive 9553. This is the best of the whole forecast – clean, huge, and absolutely for experts only.
Saturday July 11th still has 12ft swell but onshore wind muddies it a bit. Sunday morning July 12th drops to 8ft from the SSW, still glassy, which is good for strong intermediates.
After that, it all fades. By July 13th, we’re down to 4ft, and from the 14th onward, it’s 2-3ft dribble with poor energy (98 to 192). The rest of the run into July 19th is flat and messy. Not worth the drive.
So, the bottom line: don’t bother early. The absolute standouts are the mornings of July 9th and 10th for expert surfers only. After that, it’s small and ordinary again.
Rusty.
