Alright, let's talk about what Kaifu Rivermouth is cooking up. It’s a proper rollercoaster over the next couple of weeks, with one massive highlight that’s going to be talked about.
The beginning is a bit flat and uninspiring. Monday the 6th has tiny, weak waves with a bit of a funky wind. Not worth paddling out for. You’ve got to wait until Monday afternoon for a small, glassy 3ft swell to show up. It’s got a long 14-second period, but it’s an inconsistent spot, so you’ll be doing a lot of waiting.
Tuesday the 7th is where we get our first proper taste. The morning is dead calm with a clean 3ft SE groundswell. The afternoon turns it up a notch to 4ft, with a very long 16-second period and solid energy. That’s prime, clean, glassy conditions for the rivermouth.
Wednesday the 8th gets bigger, with the swell pushing 8ft, but the wind fouls it up with a cross-on breeze. That’s a lot of power (strong energy), but it’ll be a messy affair. By the afternoon, it’s 10ft and onshore. Only the hardcore crew will be out.
Now, for the big one. Friday morning the 10th is the absolute standout. A massive 13ft S swell with an incredibly long 18-second period. The energy reading is enormous (10148), and it’s dead calm with glassy conditions. This is a serious, heavy-duty, expert-only session. That deep-water groundswell hitting the river mouth will be freight-train-like. The water temp is about what you’d expect for July.
The 11th holds that 13ft size, but the wind turns onshore and there’s a risk of storms. Still a huge amount of energy, but the quality is gone. Sunday morning the 12th is a much better bet for most of us. The swell drops to a more manageable 8ft from the SSW, the wind is clean and offshore, and the energy is still punchy. That’s clean, powerful, and far more rideable.
After that, the second week turns into a bit of a dud. The swell hangs around in the 5ft to 6ft range, but the period drops off a cliff into short, choppy windswell. Saturday the 18th morning has a brief moment of glassy 6ft surf, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be lumpy and weak. The rest of the week is just onshore junk and weak waves. Not worth chasing.
So, the call is clear. The big Friday is a once-in-a-while type deal for the elite. For everyone else, the clean, dropping swell on Sunday the 12th morning is your best shot at some proper, fun waves without getting smashed.
Rusty.
