Alright, mates, Rusty here with the lowdown on the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a weird start at Kaifu Rivermouth, but there are some real gems if you play the waiting game. The water’s about 76°, a degree or so cooler than normal, so maybe a spring suit if you’re a bit chilly.

The first few days are a total bust. Monday the 6th kicks off with a tiny 2ft SE swell, period 15 seconds, but the wind is cross-on and the energy is weak at 180. That afternoon turns glassy with a bit more push – 3ft and 391 energy – but it’s still not worth the drive. Tuesday the 7th morning has glassy 3ft SE swell with 621 energy, a little more life, but the break is inconsistent, so you’re rolling the dice. The whole first week is a slog; there’s a big gap from Monday the 6th through to Friday the 10th where the surf is just not happening unless you’re really keen for a dip.

Then Friday the 10th – the ocean wakes up proper. That morning we get a 13ft S swell, period 17 seconds, energy a massive 10553. That’s pure groundswell freight train stuff. Wind is a bit cross-on so it won’t be perfect, but that kind of size and period will have the rivermouth going off – heavy, powerful wedges. This is expert only. 13ft is no joke. The whole weekend stays huge: Saturday the 11th has another 13ft SSW swell in the morning with 9194 energy, and Sunday the 12th morning drops to 8ft SSW but goes glassy. That Sunday morning is the standout of the first week. Clean, glassy, 8ft SSW swell, 2015 energy, and 14-second period. It’s a big drop in size from the day before, but it’ll be way more manageable for strong intermediates and up. The break is inconsistent, so you’ll have a breather between sets, but the waves that show will be well-shaped.

After that, the surf fades. The next week (starting Monday the 13th) is mostly small and ordinary – 4ft to 3ft with moderate energy, and cross-on winds or glassy but tiny. Nothing to get excited about until Saturday the 18th. That morning brings a glassy 5ft S swell, 12-second period, and 791 energy – a nice clean little session for a longboard. Then Sunday the 19th is the real jewel of the second week. Morning has 10ft ESE swell, 13-second period, glassy wind, and 3320 energy. That’s a clean, powerful groundswell, and the direction suits the rivermouth perfectly. It’s big, so experts only, but if you’ve got the skills, this is the one to mark on the calendar. Afternoon holds 8ft ESE with glassy conditions and 2129 energy – still excellent. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so on a Sunday like that you might have some company, but it’s not a circus.

Monday the 20th morning is still solid: 7ft ESE, glassy, 1123 energy – a step down but still quality. After that, Tuesday the 21st gets a bit lumpy with onshore winds and shorter period, 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit choppy. All in all, the best bet is Sunday the 19th for the cleanest, most powerful waves. Don’t ignore Friday the 10th if you’re a charger, but know it’s raw and cross-on. Keep an eye on the forecast – things can change, but this looks like a proper run of swell for the rivermouth.

Rusty, signing off.
