G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the menu for Kaifu Rivermouth. For the next few days, it’s a tough wait, but there’s a serious pulse coming.
Water temp is 76°F, about 1°F cooler than normal – nothing too out of the ordinary.
Right now, and through the weekend of the 5th and 6th of July, it’s flat as a pancake. Tiny waves from 0.7ft to 2ft, with messy cross or cross-on wind. Don’t bother.
Monday the 6th, the energy starts to trickle in. Morning has 2ft at 15 seconds from the SE, combined energy at 192 – still weak but the long period is a hint. Light cross-shore wind, but the conditions are poor. Afternoon picks up to 3ft at 14 seconds, energy 348, but that moderate cross-shore breeze adds a chop. Still not worth it.
Tuesday the 7th gets interesting but tricky. Morning brings 5ft from the SE at 17 seconds – very long period – energy jumps to 1452. Wind is cross-shore, and it’s marginal. That’s a solid swell for a rivermouth, but with that period, it’ll be bending and surging. Experts only. Afternoon hits 6ft, still 17 seconds, energy 2108, but wind turns cross-on.
Now, Wednesday the 8th of July is the one. Morning session is glassy, 6ft from the SSE at 18 seconds, energy at 4780. That’s strong energy, and with zero wind, the rivermouth will be clean, powerful, and holding shape. Swell is over 5ft but under 8ft, so it’s not just for experts – a strong intermediate with local knowledge could have a crack. The optimum swell direction is SE, and we’re close with SSE. Crowds are “sometimes”, so you might get a few, but it’s not packed. This is the standout.
The rest of that week, Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th, the swell pumps up to massive 12ft, 13ft, even 15ft from the S and SSW with very long periods. Energy is huge, hitting five-digit numbers. That’s tow-in or expert-only territory, with onshore or cross-on wind making it even more gnarly.
Sunday the 12th, the swell drops to 8ft Sunday morning with glassy conditions, period shortening to 14 seconds. Clean for the experienced, but not as epic.
From Monday the 13th, it fades fast. Monday morning has 4ft from the S at 10 seconds, glassy, energy down to 515. Surfable but ordinary. After that, it’s mostly tiny dribble under 3ft with poor conditions through the 19th of July. A long quiet spell.
So, if you’ve got one day to paddle out, make it Wednesday morning, the 8th of July. That’s the gold. Glassy, solid, and full of energy.
Later,
Rusty
