Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Kaifu Rivermouth.
Right now, we're looking at a slow start. The first few days are pretty grim – we've got tiny, weak swell and messy wind through Friday and the weekend. Honestly, the first real glimmer of hope doesn't show up until Monday the 6th of July. Even then, it’s just small, surfable waves but nothing to write home about.
The whole game changes on Tuesday the 7th. That morning, the river mouth wakes up. We’re talking a groundswell from the SE, pushing in at 4ft with an incredible 18-second period. The energy in the water is strong (1330). And get this – it's glassy. No wind. That’s the standout of the whole run. The water temp is sitting at 76°, which is just a touch cooler than average for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a little fresh.
That swell hangs around for a few days, but the wind gets tricky. By Wednesday the 8th, the swell jumps up to 8ft and then 10ft with that long 17-second period, but it's onshore. That's big, powerful, and messy – only for the experienced crew. Thursday the 9th morning is a beauty, though: glassy again, with a 12ft SE groundswell, clean and powerful (6347 energy). That’s a serious day for the experts.
Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th see the swell peak at 13ft, but the wind turns cross-shore and cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a bumpy beast. Not for the faint-hearted.
After that, the swell fades. Sunday the 12th dips to a much more manageable 5ft, and we get glassy conditions again – a solid choice for someone looking for clean, smaller waves. The energy is still decent (1413). Monday the 13th stays clean and in the 4ft to 4ft range with an 11-second period, offering some fun, easy waves.
There's then a quiet spell on Tuesday and Wednesday, with only small, weak surf. But hold onto your board – Thursday the 16th afternoon brings back a solid 7ft SE groundswell with a 15-second period, and it's glassy. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers again. That run continues into Friday and Saturday, with another 12ft glassy morning on Saturday the 18th, another absolute standout for the big-wave crew.
Remember, Kaifu is a rivermouth break and it's inconsistent. When it turns on, it's worth the wait, but you need to pick your window. Crowds are possible here, so if you see that glassy 12ft morning, get in early.
Far as I can see, the absolute best bets are the glassy morning of Tuesday 7th July for a clean, long-period groundswell, and the glassy morning of Saturday 18th July for a serious, powerful session.
Rusty.
