Table - best surf conditions forecast for Albatross over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a mixed bag coming up at Albatross, a beach and reef set-up that’s sheltered from the full swell. It’s a consistent spot, but we’re looking at a bit of a slow start before the real juice shows up.
The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than what we’d normally expect for this time of year, so a wetsuit might be the call.
Right now, it’s a bit of a write-off through Sunday and Monday morning. The swell is there but the wind is messy, making for poor surf conditions. We get a brief window Tuesday morning, July 14th, with some clean, glassy conditions and a 5ft swell from the ESE, but it’s a short period swell (9 seconds) and the energy is only moderate (545). It’s a look, but not the main event.
The real standout starts to build on Thursday, July 16th. Thursday morning is looking excellent for experienced surfers. We’re talking a solid 10ft swell from the SW, with a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s groundswell, and it’s packing some serious energy (2842). The wind is light and glassy, so it will be clean. Keep in mind, with a long period like that, it might break a bit straight at the beach, but the reef should handle it well. This holds through Friday the 17th, with the morning seeing 10ft and a bit of cross-off wind, but the afternoon turns glassy again with 8ft waves. This is the best run of the first week.
There’s a bit of a lull over the weekend of the 18th and 19th, with some onshore winds cleaning up by Sunday afternoon. Then we get another big pulse kicking off on July 22nd, Wednesday. The morning of the 22nd is a standout: 10ft from the SSW, very long period of 14 seconds, glassy conditions, and a massive energy reading (3869). This is expert-level stuff, powerful and clean. That rolls through the 23rd and 24th, but the 24th sees the swell jump to 15ft, which is huge and the wind turns onshore, making it a bit of a mixed bag for all but the most experienced.
The absolute best of the entire forecast looks like July 25th, Saturday. Saturday afternoon at Albatross is a gem. You’ve got a 13ft SW swell, a very long period of 14 seconds, and glassy conditions. The energy is massive (6046), and it’s clean. This is the one to circle. It’s a long way off, so it’s promising but not a lock, but if it comes together, it’s the session of the month.
The final days into July 27th drop back down to a more manageable 5ft to 6ft, with clean offshore winds, a nice way to finish the run.
Rusty.
