Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's look at what's shaping up for Albatross over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water is sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 3° cooler, so you'll want a good thick wetsuit if you're heading out.
The week kicks off on Saturday the 4th of July, but honestly, it's a bit of a write-off. There's some swell around at 6ft from the SE, but the wind is a messy cross-shore and the whole thing looks marginal. We've got a gap here until things start to turn around.
Sunday the 5th is still pretty ordinary, but Monday the 6th is where it gets interesting. Monday morning brings glassy conditions with a 6ft SW groundswell and a long 12-second period. The energy is solid (1104), and that offshore wind will have it looking clean as a whistle. That's your first real standout – clear skies, glass, and a nice SW swell. It's a sheltered spot so it won't be too wild, but for a beginner-friendly break, that's about as good as it gets.
Tuesday the 7th keeps the run going. Morning has a 7ft SW swell with a cross-off breeze and clean faces. Afternoon turns offshore with the same 7ft SW swell and that clean, lined-up look. Two solid sessions.
Wednesday the 8th is a write-off thanks to strong 22 mph winds in the morning and 16 mph in the afternoon. The swell's still there at 7ft but the wind ruins it.
Now, Thursday the 9th of July is the big one. The swell jumps to 10ft from the SSW, period up to 14 seconds, and the energy is pumping at 3423. Wind is light offshore in the morning – almost glassy. This is expert territory. If you've got the skills, this is the session to circle.
Friday the 10th keeps that 10ft SSW swell going, with a dead-calm glassy morning and energy at 2626. Another one for the experienced crew. The afternoon gets chopped up by a 12 mph cross-shore, so get in early.
Then we hit a drier patch. From Saturday the 11th through to Wednesday the 15th, the swell drops off and the wind is all over the place. There's a few small, clean windows mid-week, but nothing worth paddling out for. A real gap in the action.
Thursday the 16th is still small, but glassy in the morning – surfable but nothing to write home about.
Then, on Friday the 17th of July, the swell roars back. We're looking at an 12ft SW groundswell in the morning with glassy conditions and a massive 4563 energy reading. That's a very long period swell (11 seconds) too, so expect plenty of push and long lulls. It's a beach and reef set-up, so those long-period swells can close out a bit, but the offshore wind should keep it organized. For the experts, that's the best of the whole forecast.
Saturday the 18th has a 10ft SW swell easing through the day, but the afternoon brings a clean 7ft WSW swell with offshore wind and excellent conditions. A nice follow-up session for the advanced crew.
We wrap up Sunday the 19th with smaller 4ft swell, offshore breeze, and clean conditions – a good finish for the less experienced.
So, to sum it up: Monday the 6th morning for the beginners, Thursday the 9th and Friday the 17th mornings for the experts. Those are your standouts. Keep an eye on the wind – it's gonna make or break a few of those days.
Rusty.
