The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, in the old units. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Albatross over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of surf on the cards, with a real standout day that’s got me grinning. The first week is looking consistently good, but keep your eyes peeled for a special session about a week out.
The forecast kicks off on Sunday, July 19th, with some clean, fun waves. Morning sees a 5ft swell from the SW with a period of 9 seconds and light offshore winds – it’s not huge, but it’s clean and the energy is moderate (873). The afternoon picks up a touch to 6ft, still clean with a moderate offshore breeze, and the energy builds to 1170.
Monday, July 20th, is looking very nice. The morning brings a 8ft swell from the WSW with an 11-second period and a clean look to the waves. The energy is strong (1606). It’s a bit bigger, so maybe not for the groms, but for the rest of us, it’s a great session. The afternoon stays clean with a 6ft swell and a gentle offshore wind.
Now, Tuesday, July 21st morning is a real treat. It’s glassy, with a 6ft groundswell from the SW. The period is a very long 15 seconds, which means heaps of energy and long lulls between sets. The combined energy is strong (1544). This is a classic point-break or reef swell, and Albatross is a beach and reef setup, so it’ll be offering some proper lines. The afternoon gets a bit sloppy with a cross-onshore wind so that’s more of a pass.
Wednesday, July 22nd, is back to the goods. A clean 7ft SW swell with a 12-second period and a gentle offshore wind. The energy is strong (1612). Thursday, July 23rd, is still fun with a 5ft SW swell in the morning and a clean 7ft in the afternoon. All good.
Now, here’s the big one. Friday, July 24th morning. This is the standout. The swell jumps to a massive 13ft from the SSW with a very long 16-second period. The wind is glassy, and the combined energy is a whopping 7429. This is big, powerful, and for experienced surfers only. It’s going to be an absolute freight train, so if you’ve got the skills and the board, don’t miss it. The afternoon is still big at 12ft, but the wind turns cross-shore, making it a bit tricky.
Saturday, July 25th morning is another excellent session for the experienced crew. A 10ft SW swell with a 14-second period and glassy conditions. The energy is still very strong (2960). The afternoon gets a bit bumpy.
After that, things get a bit messy from Sunday, July 26th, through to Wednesday, July 29th. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the conditions are poor to marginal. It’s a write-off for a few days.
We get a second wind on Thursday, July 30th. The afternoon session looks excellent for experienced surfers, with an 12ft SE swell and a clean, gentle offshore wind. The energy is strong (3774). The direction is a bit different, but the conditions are prime.
The last few days of the forecast into the first weekend of August are more modest but clean and fun. Swells around 6ft to 6ft from the SSW with light winds. Good for a longboard or a funboard.
So, the clear calls are Friday, July 24th morning for the big dogs, and Tuesday, July 21st morning for a classic, clean long-period swell. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so don’t expect any surprises.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
