The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, lookin’ at the charts for Buffalo Bay Wildside. Let’s get into it.
Alright, things are a bit of a slow burn to start, but once we get through the first few days, there’s some real potential firing up, especially for the crew who can handle some size. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
We kick off on Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th with a 7ft SW swell, but the wind is messy – cross-on and cross-shore, keeping it from being anything special. You’re looking at marginal conditions with a combined energy of 1244 and 1352, so it’s not a write-off, but it’s just not clean. Skip it.
Then, Tuesday the 25th morning is where it starts to get interesting. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and we get a solid 8ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, giving it a powerful 2756 for combined energy. That’s a proper groundswell, and for a spot like this, it’s going to hold up well. The sets will be clean and lined up, but at 8ft, this is for the experienced crew only. The crowds are *sometimes* an issue, so keep an eye out.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th keep the momentum. Wednesday morning has a 7ft SSW swell with a clean cross-off shore breeze, solid energy at 1878. Thursday morning is a real standout: 6ft SSW swell, glassy as glass again, with a combined energy of 1444. That’s clean, it’s meaty, it’s going to be a great session for intermediate to advanced surfers. Thursday afternoon sees a shift to a 6ft ESE swell, but that’s a shorter period, so it’s a different vibe.
Friday the 28th is a bit of a let-down, with the swell dropping to 5ft and the wind turning side-shore, but Saturday the 29th is a no-go – strong winds and a dropping swell. We have a bit of a gap here.
Now, jump forward to the 1st of September. Tuesday morning brings back an 8ft SW swell with a 13-second period, and the energy is back up to 2535. The wind is onshore, but it’s light, so it might be worth a look if you’re desperate. But the real headline? The 2nd of September. That Wednesday afternoon is absolutely massive: an 12ft SW swell, 14-second period, and a combined energy of 5464. That is a monster. The file says it’s too big for this break, which is the truth – this is for absolute experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a washing machine. The wind is light cross-on, but the raw power is off the charts. The 3rd is even bigger, with a 15ft swell and 7265 energy, but with a fresh cross-on wind, it’s a write-off.
The 5th of September is another one to watch. Saturday morning and afternoon have a solid 12ft SSW swell, clean cross-off winds, and energy readings of 4563 and 4216. Again, that’s big, expert-only territory, but it will be clean and powerful. The 6th of September is a bit more manageable, with the swell dropping to 7ft, clean cross-off wind, and a good energy of 1658.
Overall, the standout here is the window from Tuesday the 25th through Thursday the 27th for the clean, glassy conditions and solid size. For the big wave chargers, the 2nd of September and the 5th of September are the ones to circle, but you have to be on your game.
Rusty.
