G'day, Rusty here. Alright, let's have a look at what's cooking at The Heads over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got some real gems in there if you pick your moments. The water temp is sitting at 63°, pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, so no shock to the system when you paddle out.
We kick off this Saturday, July 4th, with a solid pulse of groundswell. The morning sees a 7ft swell rolling in from the ESE with a meaty 13-second period, packing a punch with combined energy of 1512 (strong, powerful stuff). The wind is glassy from the NNW – that’s a huge plus, meaning clean, smooth faces. This is proper for experienced surfers, as the size is up there. The afternoon holds up nicely, still 6ft and glassy from the ENE (1423 energy). A top-notch start.
Sunday the 5th drops a notch in size to 5ft from the ESE, but it’s still a good 12-second period. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NW, keeping things tidy with 897 energy. A solid, fun morning. Sunday afternoon turns glassy from the SW with a clean 4ft swell (684 energy).
Now, a standout window opens on Monday the 6th. The morning brings a 6ft SW groundswell, 12-second period, and glassy conditions from the E (1113 energy). That combo is going to produce some really lovely, lined-up waves at The Heads. It’s the best on offer for the early week.
The second half of the week, from Tuesday the 7th through to Friday the 10th, gets tricky. We’ve got some size – a 10ft SSW groundswell hits on Thursday the 9th (3166 energy, very strong) – but the wind is mostly cross-shore, which will chop things up. That 10ft day is for experts only and with that cross-breeze, it won't be clean. The energy is there, but the quality isn’t.
We get a nice little reset on Sunday the 12th. A smaller 4ft ESE swell with a short period, but glassy winds from the N make for a clean, cruisy session in the morning (621 energy). A good one for a longer board.
The middle of the month, from the 13th to the 17th, is pretty quiet. A few small, weak swells and mostly cross-shore winds. It’s a lean stretch where you’ll be scratching for anything decent.
But hold onto your leggies, because Saturday the 18th of July is the long-range standout. The morning delivers a 4ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period (834 energy). It’s not massive, but that period is pure gold. Best of all, the wind is clean offshore from the NNW. This is a promise of beautiful, long-lined groundswell at The Heads. That’s the one to circle on the calendar.
The final day, Sunday the 19th, fades off, but the afternoon goes glassy with a 4ft SW swell (373 energy) for a peaceful close.
Alright, stay safe and get amongst it.
Rusty.
