The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at The Heads over the next couple of weeks.
Right, the first proper surf we’re looking at arrives on Thursday the 16th, and it’s not a bad start. The swell is already up, and the conditions are a real treat. The water temp is sitting at 63.1°, which is pretty much bang on average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Thursday morning is the standout early call. The Heads will be seeing a solid 8.2ft SW groundswell with a long 14-second period, and the wind is dead glassy, offshore from the WSW. That’s going to be some clean, powerful stuff. The combined energy is pumping at 2684, so there’s plenty of push. This is definitely one for the experienced crew though, as over 8.2ft is expert territory. Expect some proper sets.
Friday morning is also a beauty. The swell drops just a touch to 7.5ft from the SW, but it’s still got a nice 12-second period, and it’s glassy again, this time with a light ESE breeze. The energy is still strong at 1503. Another top session for those who know what they’re doing.
The surf settles down a bit for the weekend. Saturday afternoon sees the swell drop to 5.6ft from the SW with a 12-second period, but the wind goes glassy again, making for some very clean, user-friendly waves. The energy is just under 1000, so it’s not as punchy, but it’s a good chance for a session.
Now, we hit a bit of a lull. From Sunday the 19th right through to Monday the 20th, the swell is smaller and the wind is messy, onshore, or cross-shore. It’s not great, but don’t worry, it doesn’t stay poor for long.
Tuesday the 21st rolls in with a massive pulse. The swell jumps to 11.5ft from the SSW with a 14-second period, and the energy is a whopping 5496. The wind is glassy from the E in the morning. But here’s the thing – that’s just too big for The Heads. It’s a sandbar setup, and anything over 8.2ft is going to be a washing machine. This is expert-only, and even then, it’s going to be a challenge. Honestly, with that much power and a beach break, you might be better off looking at kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The following week is a mixed bag of solid, powerful swells but often with poor wind. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd see even bigger, wilder stuff – swells up to 19.7ft and 14.8ft, but with nasty cross-onshore winds. Again, too big and blown out for a good paddle.
A real bright spot arrives on Saturday the 25th. The swell is a solid 8.2ft from the SW with a very long 15-second period, and the wind goes glassy on the afternoon. The energy is massive at 4533. This is a serious groundswell, so it’s going to be powerful and walled up at a sandbar, but for the experts, that’s a clean, heavy session.
We’ve got another glassy morning on Wednesday the 29th with a 8.2ft SW swell, and then Thursday the 30th finishes the run nicely with a glassy 9.8ft SSW swell. Again, both are for the experienced punter.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is Thursday morning the 16th for that perfect combo of size, glassy wind, and long-period power. The other real standout is the Saturday afternoon the 25th – another glassy, heavy, expert-level session. The rest of the time is either too small, too messy, or too big for the average punter. Get in quick when it’s clean.
