The Lowdown

Alright, let’s take a look at what’s happening at The Heads over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, the first few days are pretty flat and messy. Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th are only offering small, weak, wind-affected waves around 3ft to 5ft, with a messy cross or cross-onshore breeze. The energy is low to moderate. Hardly worth getting wet.

But hold on, because things start to turn around proper on Thursday morning the 16th. We’ve got an 8ft SW groundswell rolling in with a long 14-second period, and it’s dead glassy—no wind. The energy jumps to a strong level. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, but at 8ft, it’s too big for beginners. The Heads is a sandbar setup, so that long period groundswell might make for some straight, fast sections, but with clean conditions, it’ll be worth it. Thursday afternoon stays glassy at 8ft, still with that long period.

Friday morning the 17th keeps the good run going: 8ft SW swell, glassy, with a 12-second period. The energy is still strong. Another solid session for the experienced crew. By Friday afternoon, the wind turns cross-shore and the quality drops.

Saturday the 18th is a bit of a sleeper—6ft S swell with a 12-second period, glassy in the morning, then light offshore in the afternoon. Clean conditions, so expect very good surf. This is a more manageable size for intermediates.

Now, the standout of the whole run is hands down Tuesday the 21st. The morning brings a 8ft SSW groundswell with a pumping 14-second period, glassy conditions, and strong energy. That’s clean, powerful surf. The Heads will be firing, but it’s strictly for experts at that size and with that long period. The afternoon sees the wind swing onshore and the quality drops back to marginal.

After that, the swell keeps coming but it gets too big. Wednesday the 22nd through to Saturday the 25th sees waves between 10ft and 15ft with very strong energy. That’s a serious amount of water, but it’s just too much for The Heads—the forecast says it’s too big for this break. The wind is often cross-onshore or onshore, and the setup will be a washing machine. Honestly, for a sandbar spot, this is more of a kite-surfing scenario than a paddle-surfing one.

Sunday the 26th brings a slight pullback: 8ft SW swell, 14-second period, and glassy in the morning. Strong energy, but it’s back to excellent conditions for experienced surfers. Monday the 27th is a nice little drop-off: 5ft to 5ft SW swell, glassy or clean, with moderate energy. This is a much more user-friendly window for intermediates.

The final few days, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th, see the swell bump back up to 8ft–10ft with strong energy, but the wind is mostly cross-onshore or cross, so the quality is marginal. The size also pushes it back into expert-only territory.

So, the standout best options are Thursday the 16th morning for the first real taste of quality, and Tuesday the 21st morning for the best combination of strong, clean, glassy groundswell. Saturday the 18th and Monday the 27th are the best bets for intermediates looking for a cleaner, smaller session.

Stay safe out there.
