The Lowdown
Alright folks, it's Rusty here, looking at the local stretch for the next couple of weeks. We've got a slow start, but once it kicks in, there's some serious power coming our way, so hang tight.
The next few days are a bit of a write-off with the onshore junk, but things start to shape up by Monday the 21st. The first real standout is shaping up for Tuesday morning, the 21st of July. We're looking at The Heads (sandbar), and for a few hours it's gonna be absolutely firing. We've got a clean 6ft SW groundswell pumping in with a solid 14-second period, and the wind is dead calm – glassy as. That swell energy is strong, sitting at 1695, and you'll feel every bit of it. The water temp is about 64°, bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
That Tuesday afternoon the swell jumps up to a powerful 8ft, but a light cross-onshore breeze sneaks in, taking the edge off the perfection. Still, a big, powerful SSW groundswell. The Wednesday is a bit messier with onshore wind, but we've got another clean one coming for Thursday morning, the 23rd of July. The Heads will be clean again with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NW, wrapping a strong 7ft SW swell (11-second period) into the sandbar. The energy is still solid at 1390, and for an experienced surfer, this is prime.
Then things get big. Friday morning, the 24th of July, the swell is going to absolutely max out – we're talking a massive 12ft SSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period. The combined energy is off the charts at 5225. Now, the wind is light and cross-shore, but this is well into "experts only" territory; it's gonna be too big for most and potentially unruly for the setup. For the average punter, it's a day to watch, not paddle.
After that peak, it settles down but stays good. Saturday morning, the 25th of July, gives us another glassy session with a clean 8ft SSW swell (13-second period) and a solid 1994 energy reading. Again, this is big, clean, and for experienced surfers. There's a bit of a lull in the middle of the following week, with onshore winds and choppy conditions making it a bit ordinary through the 27th and 28th.
Looking further out into the first few days of August, there are some promising signs. Sunday morning, the 2nd of August, looks clean with a light offshore breeze and a solid 6ft SSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period and energy at 1923. And Monday morning, the 3rd of August, is another clean one with a pure offshore wind from the N, wrapping a good-looking 6ft SW swell. It's a week and a half away, so not set in stone, but it's a nice way to finish the outlook.
The Heads is the only game in town, but when it's on, it's on. Best of the bunch is undoubtedly that glassy Tuesday morning session on the 21st, with Thursday the 23rd a close second. Stay tuned, and be ready for the big one on the 24th if you've got the skills and the nerve.
Rusty.
