The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s dive into the next 16 days at Barbel Point. This is a point break, and it’s fairly consistent, so we’ve got a decent run of surfable days ahead, though the second week gets a bit messy with the wind. The water temp is sitting at 68.9°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
We kick off on Tuesday, July 14th, with a glassy morning. The wind is light from the NE at 3.1 mph, and we’ve got a 6.2 ft swell from the east at 9 seconds. That’s a decent medium-period swell, and the combined energy is moderate (669). The morning is the standout here – clean, glassy conditions. The afternoon sees a similar swell but with a light onshore breeze, so the morning is where you want to be.
Wednesday, July 15th, is a beauty. Offshore wind from the SW at 9.3 mph, and the swell is 5.6 ft from the east with a 10-second period. That’s a clean, fun size. The combined energy is still moderate (610). Both morning and afternoon are looking good with gentle offshore winds, so you can surf all day.
Thursday, July 16th, has a glassy morning again. The swell drops a touch to 4.6 ft from the east, but the period stretches to 11 seconds, giving it a bit more punch. The combined energy ticks up to 810. The morning is the pick. The afternoon turns onshore and the direction shifts, so stick to the early session.
Friday, July 17th, is another solid day. Offshore winds from the SW at 9.3 to 12.4 mph, with a 3.0 ft to 3.3 ft swell from the SSW, but the period is a long 13 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and it’ll wrap around the point nicely. The combined energy is moderate (736 and 551). The afternoon has a bit more wind, but it’s still clean.
Saturday, July 18th, is a write-off. Onshore wind from the NE cranking at 15.5 to 18.6 mph, with a 6.9 ft to 7.2 ft swell from the south. The combined energy is strong (1685 and 1730), but the wind is blowing it out. The poor surf conditions mean you’re better off doing something else.
Sunday, July 19th, we’re back in business. Offshore SW wind at 9.3 mph, with a 5.2 ft to 4.6 ft swell from the SSE at 11 seconds. Clean, fun waves. The combined energy is moderate (720 and 423). Both sessions are good.
Now, Monday, July 20th, is the standout of the whole outlook. The morning is absolutely firing. Glassy conditions, wind from the ESE at 3.1 mph, and a solid 8.2 ft swell from the SSW at 12 seconds. That’s a big, long-period groundswell, and the combined energy is strong (1913). This is for experienced surfers only – that size is too much for beginners. The point break will handle that swell beautifully, with long, clean lines. The afternoon gets ruined by a strong onshore wind, so get out there early or miss it.
Tuesday, July 21st, has a fresh offshore wind from the WSW at 18.6 mph in the morning, with a 4.3 ft swell from the SSW. The combined energy is moderate (685). The afternoon is better with a cross-offshore wind from the south at 9.3 mph, and the swell is similar. It’s a clean day overall.
Wednesday, July 22nd, the morning is a bit messy with a light cross-onshore wind, but the swell is 5.6 ft from the SSW at a very long 14 seconds. The afternoon is the real deal – moderate offshore wind from the SW at 15.5 mph, with a 4.9 ft swell and the same long period. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The combined energy is strong (1335 and 1009).
Thursday, July 23rd, continues the run. Morning has gentle offshore winds from the SSW at 9.3 mph, with a 6.2 ft swell from the SSW at 14 seconds. The combined energy is very strong (1560). This is another standout for experienced surfers. The afternoon is a bit windier but still solid.
Friday, July 24th, things start to fall apart. The morning has a moderate cross-shore wind and rain, with a 4.3 ft swell. The afternoon is worse – onshore wind at 12.4 mph and a 8.2 ft swell, but the period drops to a short 8 seconds, so it’s a messy, crumbly mess. The combined energy is high (1208), but the quality is poor.
Saturday, July 25th, through to the end of the period on July 29th, is a long stretch of poor surf. The wind is onshore from the NE, blowing 15.5 to 24.9 mph,
