The Lowdown

Right, let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, the first week is a bit of a struggle. We've got some swell, but the wind and conditions are just not playing ball for a proper paddle session. The real standout, the one worth circling on the calendar, is way out on Monday the 3rd of August. But we'll get to that.

The first real chance to get wet comes on Monday the 20th of July. Country Club (African Beach) is seeing a 7ft SSE swell, with a 12-second period pushing through. The combined energy is moderate (1384). The problem is the 12 mph cross-shore wind from the south. It's making things a bit lumpy, and the water is a touch warmer than normal at 73°. It's surfable, but it's not going to be a classic. The wind swings a bit lighter on the Monday afternoon, but it stays cross-on, so it's still a bit messy.

The rest of that week into the weekend is a real grind. Tuesday through to Thursday is a mix of onshore winds and dropping swell. By Friday the 24th, the swell jumps up to 10ft from the south, but with a 19 mph cross wind, it's just too big and unruly for this spot. The combined energy is strong (1714). That's a pass for me. The weekend of the 26th and 27th is a write-off with strong onshore winds and short-period junk.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. We have a massive pulse of swell forecast for the 29th of July. Country Club is looking at a 13ft south swell, with a very strong combined energy of 5432. The wind is cross-shore, but the forecast notes it's just too big for this break. That's a big wave day for the experts only, and even then, it looks like it might be a washing machine.

The absolute standout, the one you're waiting for, is Monday the 3rd of August. The morning is looking absolute magic. The swell is a solid 6ft from the east, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is moderate (1370). But the wind? It's dead calm. Glassy. That's the word. The forecast says it's excellent for experienced surfers, and I can see why. It will be clean, with no wind to mess it up. This is the one to aim for. The swell direction is east, but with the glassy conditions, it's going to be a real treat. The afternoon stays clean but the wind picks up light onshore, so get on it early.

So, to sum it up: the first week and a half are a bit of a mess with onshore winds and mushy conditions. Don't bother. The 29th is a big, dangerous swell for the brave. Lock in the morning of Monday the 3rd of August. That's the call.

Rusty.
