The Lowdown
Right, let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
The first real action doesn't kick off until Friday, the 17th of July, with a bit of a wait if you're itching to get wet early in the week. There's a solid run of swell coming through, but we've got to work around the wind to find the clean ones.
Things start Friday afternoon with a building SSW groundswell at Humewood. It's a solid 5ft with a 12-second period, pushing moderate wave energy. The water's sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll want the extra rubber. The wind is off from the SW, so it should be clean, but the spot is a sheltered breakwater, and it's inconsistent, so you'll need patience. The best of the first week is shaping up for Monday, the 20th of July. The morning sees a 5ft SSW groundswell at 12 seconds with moderate energy and the wind is dead glassy from the NNE. That's your standout for the week – clean, glassy, and accessible for most.
The weekend picks up some size, but the winds get a bit tricky. By Thursday, the 23rd, the afternoon clears up with a 5ft SSW swell and clean offshore winds, which is a good sign. However, the real highlight is further out. On Friday, the 24th of July, a very long-period SSW groundswell arrives. The morning is glassy with a 8ft swell at 17 seconds, pumping out very strong wave energy. This is big, powerful, and for experienced surfers only. The afternoon is similar at 8ft with a 16-second period and clean cross-offshore winds. This is a proper groundswell, so it'll be lining up best at the points and reefs, but at a breakwater, it could be a bit straight. Still, the quality is undeniable.
After that, things get messy with a lot of swell but poor winds. There's another big pulse on Sunday, the 26th of July, with a 7ft SSW swell at 17 seconds and a massive energy reading, but the wind is a strong cross-offshore, so it's not a clean option. The end of the run is a bit of a washout. The week of the 28th offers some smaller SSW swells, but they're mostly onshore or cross-on. The final real standout is on Thursday, the 30th of July, with a 10ft easterly swell at 10 seconds. The wind is a clean cross-off from the WNW, and the energy is very strong. This is another one for the experts only, and it's a week and a half out, so the forecast is promising but not set in stone.
Overall, Monday the 20th is the pick for the average surfer, and Friday the 24th is the standout for the experienced crew, but don't sleep on Thursday the 30th if the long-range holds.
