The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the sub-region, just one spot on the menu this time: Magna Tubes.
First up, the water temperature is sittin’ at 63°, which is a couple of degrees colder than normal for this time of year. That’s a noticeable chill, so you’ll be wantin’ a thicker suit if you’re paddlin’ out.
The pattern starts off a bit slow. Sunday the 19th has some swell pushin’ through at 7ft from the SW, but the wind is a cross-off and the combined energy is moderate (1161). The whole setup feels a bit marginal, nothin’ to get too excited about. Monday, the 20th, drops right down to 4ft, but the swell direction swings to the SE and lines up with the optimum swell direction for this reef. The wind is a cross-off, and the energy is still moderate (612). It’s rideable, but it’s not the standout.
Now, Tuesday the 21st – this is where it starts to get interesting. You’ve got a 6ft SW groundswell comin’ in with a very long period of 15 seconds. The wind is glassy, dead calm, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 1715. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – a real clean, lined-up reef wave. That long period will make it punchy and the sets will be well-spaced, so paddlin’ out will be a bit easier.
Wednesday the 22nd keeps the good times rollin’ with a 7ft SW swell, 12-second period, and glassy conditions again in the morning. The energy is strong (1640). Another top-tier session if you’re comfortable on a reef. The afternoon gets a bit messier with a 16 mph cross-off wind, so be on it early.
Thursday the 23rd is a mixed bag. The morning has a 7ft swell but the period drops to 8 seconds, which is short and weak, and the wind is cross-off. The afternoon sees the swell size jump up to 12ft, but it’s comin’ from the SW with a moderate 11-second period. That’s big, powerful, and only for experts. The energy is strong (2663).
Friday the 24th… oof. The morning has a 12ft swell from the SSW with a very long period of 16 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 6563. That’s a lot of power. But the wind is onshore, and it’s lookin’ poor. The afternoon is no better with a 10ft SW swell, strong onshore wind, and a cross-on chop. This is more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.
Saturday the 25th is a beauty. The morning goes glassy again with a 8ft SW swell, good 13-second period, and strong energy (2090). Excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a bit onshore and the tide might be tricky, so the morning window is the one to aim for.
The next week starts to settle down a bit. Sunday the 26th has 7ft and 6ft SW swells with light cross-shore winds, but the quality is only marginal. Monday the 27th brings back 10ft SW swell, but the wind is pumpin’ at 25 mph in the morning – that’s a strong breeze, and it’s cross-off, so it’ll be blown out and dangerous. The afternoon is still windy but slightly less. Not a good call.
Tuesday the 28th is a write-off with onshore wind and light rain. The swell is big at 10ft, but the quality is poor.
Now, the real standout in the second week is Sunday the 2nd of August. The morning has a 7ft SSW swell, 15-second period, strong energy (2706), and a clean cross-off wind. The afternoon is even better: glassy conditions, 8ft SSW swell, and a very long period of 17 seconds with a massive 4726 combined energy. That is a proper groundswell, clean and powerful. This is the best on offer for the whole 16-day window – a real gem for experienced surfers on this reef.
Monday the 3rd of August also has a solid 7ft SW swell, 14-second period, and clean cross-off wind in the morning. A good finish to the run.
Overall, Magna Tubes is a reef that demands respect. It’s fairly consistent, but it’s an advanced spot. The standout sessions are clearly Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd morning, Saturday the 25th morning, and the absolute best is Sunday the 2nd of August. Be aware that crowds are possible at this spot, so get out there early for the cleanest waves.
Rusty.
