The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. Magna Tubes is the only game in town for this whole 16-day run, so all eyes are on this reef.
The big story here is a proper run of south-west groundswell, with some monster pulses late in the window. For a spot that wants south-east swell, we’re getting a lot of south-west direction, but when the period is that long and the water is clean, this reef can still fire. Water temp is sitting at 58° – a massive 8° colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thick suit.
Sunday the 23rd sees the first real action with a 8 ft south-west swell, period around 11 seconds, and light cross-off winds. Combined energy is 1515 (moderate). It’s a solid start for experienced surfers, but don’t expect perfection – the direction isn’t ideal. Monday the 24th holds similar, with 7 ft on the dial, same clean conditions, and a bit more period at 12 seconds. Tuesday the 25th is a standout: 8 ft south-west, 13-second period, light cross-off breeze, and a combined energy of 3352 (strong). This is the pick of the first week – clean, powerful, and punchy for the crew who know how to handle a reef.
Wednesday the 26th is a write-off with onshore chop, so skip it. But Thursday the 27th saves us: 7 ft south-west swell, glassy conditions with a light NNW breeze. That’s a beautiful combination for a Thursday morning session.
Friday the 28th is worth a paddle, too – 5 ft south swell, glassy, period around 11 seconds. Small but clean. After that, things drop off hard. Saturday the 29th through Monday the 31st see tiny, weak surf with the combined energy dropping to just 57 (weak) by Monday morning. A definite lull.
But then things get big. Real big. On September 3rd, a massive pulse of 18 ft south-west swell hits, period 14 seconds, and combined energy rockets to 12,163 (very strong). The wind is cross-off but fresh – it’s expert-only territory. Then September 4th brings a 26 ft south-west swell, 16-second period, and combined energy over 30,000 (very strong). It’s simply too big for this break, even with favorable wind. Don't even think about it unless you’re a pro and you know the reef perfectly.
The absolute standout is September 5th, Saturday morning: 20 ft swell from the SSW, 14-second period, light offshore breeze (6 mph), and glassy conditions. Combined energy is 14,235. This is exceptional – clean, powerful, and lined up. But remember, at this size, it’s only for the experts. The crowd situation says “sometimes” for this break, but on a day like this, expect company.
The window ends with solid but still massive swell on the 6th and 7th, all well over 15 ft and very long period. It’s a washing machine for anyone who doesn’t live in the water.
So, the two true standouts are Tuesday the 25th for clean, powerful waves in the first week, and Saturday the 5th of September for a dawn patrol that will go down in the memory bank – if you’ve got the guts.
Stay safe, stay salty.
