Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty, and we’re looking at a solid run of swell for Magna Tubes. This is a proper reef break, so it’s advanced territory only – not one for the groms or the weekend warriors. We’ve got a long stretch of action coming, starting up right away.
The first few days kick off with a powerful SE groundswell. Friday the 3rd we’re looking at clean 7ft to 8ft sets (combined energy of 2083 and 1559) with that perfect 11-second period. The wind is light and glassy in the afternoon – that’s about as good as it gets for this spot. Saturday the 4th keeps the quality going with 7ft SE swell at 12 seconds in the morning, clean, and still cross-off. It’s a beautiful start to the weekend.
The standout window here is the morning of Monday the 6th. We get a shift to a 7ft SW groundswell (12 seconds) with glassy conditions and a combined energy reading of 1432. That’s the kind of morning you call in sick for. The break is fairly consistent and exposed to the SE, and this SW swell lines up with the optimum direction. It’s going to be a ripper, though with the reef setup, it’s strictly for the experienced.
Around Wednesday the 8th, the swell builds and holds around 8ft from the SW, period stretching out to 14 seconds. The combined energy jumps up to 2128 and 2587, but the wind picks up strong from the WSW, so it’s clean but a bit more of a handful. Still excellent, but you’ll want your big-wave gear and your wits about you.
We hit a rough patch from the 9th into the 12th. The swell gets big and messy, with a lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind from the east. The combined energy on the 12th is huge (5654), but it’s a lumpy, wind-blown mess with S groundswell up to 10ft at 16 seconds. That’s kite-surf territory, not paddle-surfing. A solid 4 to 5 days of poor to marginal conditions there.
But don’t write this run off. The real highlight, the one to circle on the calendar, is the afternoon of Wednesday the 15th of July. We’ve got a monster 15ft SW groundswell rolling in at 12 seconds, combined energy of 5069, and a powerful offshore wind from the west. That is exceptional, big-wave territory for experts only. The morning of Thursday the 16th is even bigger with a 15ft, 14-second groundswell and an energy reading of 8761 – that’s a serious, serious groundswell. For the handful of guys who can handle Magna Tubes at that size, it’s a dream. Just be aware that groundswell that long can break a bit straight at the reef, but with that perfect offshore wind, it’s going to be a memory-maker.
Crowds are possible here, especially on the better days, but the size and difficulty tend to thin the pack out.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re an expert, the mornings of the 3rd through 6th are clean and powerful, and the 15th and 16th are absolute standouts if you can handle the size and a bit of wind. The middle of the month is a write-off for clean waves. Keep an eye on the forecast, but this is a promising run.
