The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf on the cards at Magna Tubes, a heavy reef setup that’s for the experienced crew only.
The main event starts Sunday the 23rd of August with a strong 8ft swell from the SW, pushing a massive 1515 units of combined energy. That’s a lot of water moving, and with an 11-second period, it’s got some proper grunt. The morning is the pick with a light cross-offshore breeze making for clean, shaped-up lines. It’s a reef break, so long-period swells like this will draw right in. This is a top call for the advanced surfer.
Monday the 24th keeps the momentum, with a 7ft SW swell and a 12-second period, energy still high at 1101. The morning again is glassy with that perfect cross-off wind, but by afternoon the breeze picks up a notch, though it stays clean.
Now, the standout is shaping up for Tuesday the 25th of August. We’re looking at a 10ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, and the combined energy punches through 3327. Morning winds are clean and cross-off. This is serious, powerful surf – well overhead and pushing a lot of water. It’s only for experts at this size. There will be long lulls between sets, but the waves that come through will be proper, lined-up reef bombs. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Wednesday the 26th sees the swell hold around 10ft, but a strong 30 km/h cross-onshore E wind ruins it. The energy is still massive at 3551, but it’s lumpy and blown out – a skip day.
Thursday and Friday slump. Swell drops to 5ft or less, with a messy mix of wind and directions. Friday afternoon turns glassy with a 4ft S swell at 11 seconds, but it’s small and weak for this spot. Not worth the paddle out.
Saturday the 29th gets smashed by 40 km/h winds. Swell is tiny anyway. Absolutely no go.
The next real window opens on Tuesday the 1st of September. A fresh 10ft SW swell arrives with a 13-second period and a massive 2909 energy reading. The morning is dead calm, glassy, and clean. This is another top-tier session for the experts. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Thursday the 3rd of September is the absolute standout of the whole run. We’ve got a 15ft SW groundswell at 13 seconds, and the combined energy is a colossal 7077. That’s a huge amount of power. The afternoon sees a 20 km/h offshore wind from the WNW, cleaning up what will be heaving, thick reef slabs. This is exceptional surf, but only for the most experienced. This is a day to remember, but it’s over a week away, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
After that, the swell hangs around 10ft+ but gets into a messy wind pattern through the start of September. Thursday the 3rd is the one to circle.
Rusty.
