Alright, let’s get into it. Over the next sixteen days, we’ve got a real mixed bag at Magna Tubes, with some absolute standout sessions for the experienced crew, but also some proper dud days and even dangerous conditions toward the end.

The first proper surf kicks off on Saturday morning, 4 July. Magna Tubes is serving up a solid 7ft SE swell, with a long 12-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off from the NW. That’s clean, powerful reef surf. The water temp is 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year (about 3° cooler than usual). The combined energy is pumping at 1301 – that’s moderate to strong energy. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Crowds are possible here, so keep that in mind. If you’re not advanced, give it a miss.

Sunday morning, 5 July, drops a little to 5ft SE swell, still clean with a NNW cross-off breeze, but the energy drops to 701. It’s still fun but not a standout.

Then Monday morning, 6 July, is a real beauty. The swell is 6ft from the SW, 12-second period, and the wind is glassy – dead calm. That’s a major positive. Clean as a whistle, with energy at 1104. This is top-quality surf for experienced surfers. Tuesday, 7 July, keeps the good run going: 7ft SW swell, cross-off wind WSW at 15 km/h, energy at 1561. Clean and punchy all day.

Wednesday, 8 July, the swell jumps to 10ft from the SW, long 13-second period, but the wind picks up to 25 km/h cross-off in the morning. That’s big – over 8ft, so experts only. The energy is strong at 2811. By afternoon, it turns cross-on and choppy with light rain; not great.

Thursday, 9 July, swell hits 12ft from the SSW with a very long 14-second period, energy roaring at 4453. But it’s cross-on wind, so the waves will be lumpy. Still, that’s a lot of water moving. Only for the brave.

Friday, 10 July, the swell backs to 8ft but onshore winds mess it up. Not recommended.

Saturday, 11 July, through Sunday, 12 July, the conditions go downhill fast with strong cross-on winds and fading swell. Monday and Tuesday, 13-14 July, we get a lull – small 3-3ft SW swell, glassy or clean, but weak energy (around 222-272). Good for a longboard or a recovery session.

Then Wednesday, 15 July, picks up a little to 5ft SSW, clean, energy 677 – a decent option.

Now, the real standout of the whole outlook is Thursday afternoon, 16 July, and Friday morning, 17 July. Thursday afternoon brings a massive 16ft S swell, short period at 11 seconds, but cross-off wind from the SW at 25 km/h. Energy is 6443 – very strong. That’s a big, powerful reef. Then Friday morning, the swell drops to 12ft from the SSE, but the wind goes offshore from the W at 25 km/h, and the energy is 5174. The records say “exceptional for expert surfers.” That is the pick of the bunch – offshore, big, and organized. But do not take this lightly.

After that, conditions go wild. Saturday, 18 July, brings heavy rain and a near gale from the S at 37 mph, with lumpy, choppy waves. Sunday, 19 July, is still windy and messy, with rain showers and strong breeze. Not surfable.

So, the best on offer? Without a doubt, Monday morning, 6 July (glassy and clean) and Friday morning, 17 July (offshore and massive). Everything else has serious caveats. This is a reef for experts, and the big days will test you.

Rusty.
