The Lowdown
Alright, gather 'round, this is Rusty. Let's talk about the next couple of weeks at Magna-Tubes. This is an advanced reef break, and it's exposed to the south-east, meaning it grabs a lot of that south-west groundswell that's been firing. We're not messing around with beginners here; this spot has some serious power.
We kick off the window, starting Thursday the 16th with solid swell. The combined wave energy is pumping at 3239 (moderate to strong). We're looking at a clean 10 ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period—that's proper long-period energy. The wind is a light offshore from the W at 3 mph, keeping faces clean for the experienced crew. Thursday afternoon drops slightly to 8 ft but stays clean with a cross-off breeze.
Friday the 17th morning is where it gets a little magical. The wind goes glassy from the WNW at 3 mph, and we've still got 8 ft of SW swell at 12 seconds. The energy is 2077, still packing a punch. That's a moment of pure, clean reef surfing for those who can handle it. The afternoon sees the wind swing cross-on, dropping the quality a notch.
The weekend kicks off Saturday the 18th. The swell dips but is still solid. Saturday morning is a smaller 4 ft from the S with an 11-second period, but the wind is cross-off and the water is clean. Saturday afternoon the SW swell jumps back to 7 ft with a 10-second period. Sunday the 19th brings a bigger pulse: 12 ft in the morning and 8 ft in the afternoon, but the wind gets strong. An 19 mph cross-off on Sunday morning makes it challenging to hold your line even if the faces are clean. The energy is strong at 2574, but you'll be fighting the breeze.
Monday the 20th looks sweet. Morning glass from the NNW at 3 mph, with a clean 6 ft, 11-second SW swell and energy at 916. That's a day for a longboard or a good step-up and a lot of fun.
Now, looking toward the end of the first week and into the second... Tuesday the 21st is a standout session. Morning brings 8 ft from the SSW with a long 14-second period, and energy jumps to 3169. The wind is a light cross-off at 6 mph. Clean, powerful, and well-shaped for the reef. Tuesday afternoon gets even bigger with 12 ft at 15 seconds—that's very long period groundswell, and the energy hits 4792. This is expert territory only. The reef will be handling these long lines beautifully. Wednesday the 22nd keeps the trend: 12 ft in the morning with a light offshore from the WNW and 6 mph wind. That's as good as it gets.
Thursday the 23rd stays in the same groove with 12 ft clean surf in the morning. That big SW energy at 3865 is a beautiful thing.
As we push toward the end of the month, the swell stays strong. Friday the 24th takes a breather with some rain and smaller 5 ft surf, then Saturday the 25th fires back up. Saturday afternoon is monstrous: 12 ft from the SW with a 15-second period, and the combined energy hits a staggering 5098. The wind is light and cross-off. If you are an expert, that is the session to mark on your calendar. Saturday morning also has a solid 8 ft with a clean offshore breeze.
Sunday the 26th continues the run of excellent surf with 10 ft and glassy conditions in the afternoon. The water is around the average temperature for this time of year, so a thin wetsuit should be fine. Monday the 27th is glassy all day—0 mph wind in the morning, 3 mph from the SE in the afternoon. The swell is still a clean 6 ft to 7 ft with a long 14-second period.
Towards the very end of the window, Tuesday the 28th holds clean, then Wednesday the 29th gets blown out by strong 25-28 mph cross-off winds. That's a write-off for surfing. Thursday the 30th is a mess: a huge 18 ft SW swell with 15-second period, but cross-onshore wind from the east at 16 mph and energy at 11936. That's a nasty, choppy beast. Friday the 31st looks better with a 13 ft SW groundswell and a cleaner north wind, but the day's energy is high at 5389 and it's still expert only.
Bottom line: Magna-Tubes is on fire for the next two weeks. There are days of world-class, powerful reef waves. But respect the size and the consistency. This isn't a beginner's playground. Stay safe out there.
