The Lowdown

Gather 'round, crew. Rusty here. We've got a solid 16-day window ahead at Magna Tubes, and it's a proper story of two halves. The first week or so is building, with a few real gems, and then the second week brings some serious size. Let's get into it.

The water's sitting at 64°, which is a tick colder than we'd expect for this time of year – a bit of a shock to the system, but you'll warm up quick when you're on a wave.

Sunday morning, the 19th, starts us off with a clean 5ft swell from the SW, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a light cross-off at 6 mph, and the combined energy is moderate (873). It's a solid, clean opener to get the rust off. The afternoon gets a bit messier with stronger wind, so the morning is the call.

Now, Monday the 20th is a real treat. The swell drops a touch to 4ft, but it's swinging around to the SE with a groundswell period of 12 seconds. The morning is glassy with a light offshore wind, making for clean lines. The combined energy is moderate (612). This is a classic, user-friendly morning session.

But the standout of the first week, without a doubt, is Tuesday morning, the 21st. We're looking at 6ft of SW groundswell with a very long period of 15 seconds. The wind is dead calm – glassy conditions. The combined energy is strong (1677). Now, this is a reef break, and that long period will wrap in beautifully. It's a setup for some proper, powerful, well-shaped waves, but at this size, it's more for the experienced crew. The long gaps between sets will make paddling out a breeze. This is the one to circle on the calendar.

Wednesday morning, the 22nd, follows up with more glassy conditions and a 7ft SW swell at 12 seconds. The energy is strong (1696). It's another excellent session for those who know what they're doing.

Things get bigger and windier towards the end of that week. The 24th and 25th are for experts only. We've got a 13ft SSW swell on Friday the 24th morning with a 16-second period and a light cross-off. The combined energy is exceptional (7663). That's a serious, powerful, heavy ocean. Saturday the 25th is still pumping at 10ft with a 14-second period and clean conditions in the morning. This is big-wave territory.

After a bit of a wind-affected and messy period from the 26th to the 29th, the window opens up again for the final run. The 31st of July brings a different swell direction from the ESE, but it's 13ft and glassy again in the morning. The combined energy is strong (3091). Then, Saturday, the 1st of August, is the other true standout. The afternoon session is absolute perfection: 15ft from the E with a glassy, dead-calm wind. The energy is very strong (4551). This is a monster swell, heavy and powerful. This is for experts only, but it's a day that will be talked about. The morning of Sunday the 2nd is also excellent, with an 12ft E swell and clean cross-off wind.

The window then winds down to smaller, cleaner waves on the 3rd of August to finish the run.

So, crew, the two weeks are packed. Tuesday the 21st is the pick for the first week – a classic groundswell with glassy conditions. And for the second week, that Saturday the 1st of August session is the big kahuna. Get on it if you've got the skill.

Rusty.
