The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Magna Tubes over the next couple of weeks.

First up, we’ve got a window of solid, clean swell hitting this exposed reef break. The water is sitting at 57°, which is a whopping 9° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, so you’ll want the thickest wetsuit in the quiver.

The action kicks off on Sunday, August 23rd. The morning sees a 8ft SW swell rolling in with a period of 11 seconds. The combined energy is pumping at 1571 (moderate to strong), and with a light offshore breeze, the face will be clean. This is proper advanced territory at that size, so it’s for the experienced crew only. The afternoon stays solid at 8ft, but the wind swings cross-shore, making it a little less perfect.

Monday, August 24th is a real gem. The morning is glassy with a light offshore breeze, 7ft of SW swell, and a 12-second period. The energy is 1100, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is a standout morning – clean, lined-up reef waves for the crew who know what they’re doing. The afternoon holds up at 6ft, but the breeze picks up.

We get a pulse of bigger energy on Tuesday, August 25th. The swell jumps to 10ft from the SW, with a period of 14 seconds, and the combined energy cranks up to 3653 (strong). This is well over the 8ft mark, so it’s expert-only territory. The wind is light cross-shore, so there will be some texture on the face, but the power is undeniable.

Things start to get messy from Wednesday the 26th through Thursday the 27th. We’ve got strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy conditions, even though the swell is still solid. It’s a pass for the paddle crew.

Then, Friday, August 28th delivers redemption. The morning is glassy – dead calm – with a 5ft S swell and a 13-second period. The energy is 1289. The report says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers,” and with that glassy surface, the reef will be firing clean. This is another top pick.

The following week holds some serious promise for the brave. The standout is Sunday, August 30th. The morning swell is a massive 18ft from the SW, with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is an enormous 10087 (very strong). This is a beast of a swell, only for expert-level chargers. The wind is cross-offshore, keeping it clean, but the size is absolute heavy-water territory. The afternoon drops to 15ft, still a massive session.

Looking further ahead, Saturday, September 5th looks like a solid finisher. The afternoon brings a 10ft SW swell with a long 16-second period, packing 4722 in energy. The wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. The longer period suggests powerful, well-shaped waves, but at this reef break, the long period will make it suck really hard, offering steep, deep barrels. It’s an excellent condition for experienced surfers.

There are a few days in between with smaller, onshore wind slop, but the real windows of quality are clear. You have to be patient and pick your days. Expect crowds at Magna Tubes sometimes, but with this size, a lot of the pack will thin out.

Stay safe, pick your moments, and charge hard.

Rusty.
