Table - best surf conditions forecast for Magna Tubes over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards for Magna-Tubes over the next couple of weeks, but it’s a mixed bag with conditions, so you’ll need to pick your windows. The water is sitting at 63.3°F right now, which is a bit colder than we’d normally expect for this time of year – that’s a notable chill, so a good thick wetsuit might be the go.
The action kicks off Thursday afternoon, July 9th. We’ve got a 11.5ft SW groundswell with a 13-second period rolling in, so plenty of energy – combined energy is pumping at 4041 (strong wave energy). The wind is a cross-off from the WSW at 12 mph, keeping things clean, but the report flags marginal conditions. It’s a solid, powerful wave, but at this size and with that period, it’s strictly for advanced surfers at this exposed reef. Stick to the bigger swells if you’ve got the skills.
Friday, July 10th is the standout early on. Morning brings a glassy offshore wind from the west at 9 mph, with the same 11.5ft SSW swell – energy still huge at 4121. This is excellent, clean surf for seasoned crew. The afternoon holds up too with a light cross-off from the SW and 11.5ft swell at 3600 energy. This is your best bet for the first week: a big, powerful, well-shaped groundswell with clean conditions. The trade-off? The swell is over 8ft, so forget the beginners; this is an experts-only zone.
Saturday, July 11th sees the swell drop slightly to 10ft, but a cross-on wind from the east messes things up. The morning has light winds and small wind ripples, but by afternoon it gets choppier with 9 mph winds. The energy drops to 2050 (moderate) but quality fades. Sunday, July 12th is even worse – rain showers, onshore winds, and a dropping 5ft swell with energy down to 843. Not worth a paddle.
From Monday, July 13th through Wednesday, July 15th, we get clean windows with smaller swell (3.6ft to 6.2ft) but shorter periods (7–10 seconds) and cross-off winds. The energy is moderate (320–1018). These are good, clean surf days for a mixed ability crowd – the swell is under 5ft so it’s more forgiving, but the shorter period means less punch.
Then Thursday, July 16th, it picks up again: 8.2ft SW groundswell, 13-second period, and a light offshore wind from the NW in the morning – that’s clean, powerful, and excellent for advanced surfers. Energy at 2753 (strong). The afternoon sees a light cross-shore, so morning is the go. Friday, July 17th holds similar quality with 6.9–7.2ft SW swell, long period, and light offshore winds – still strong wave energy (1433–1664), good pick for experienced surfers.
Saturday, July 18th gets blown out by strong 19–22 mph cross-off winds. Even though the swell is 4.6–7.5ft, the fresh breeze makes it messy and marginal. That kitesurfing gear might be more fun here.
Now, looking further out, Sunday, July 19th – just over a week away – brings a standout swell: 16.4ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period and combined energy of 9094 to 9611 (very strong wave energy). This is a massive groundswell with very long period. The wind is light cross to cross-on from the NE, so there’s some chop. At this size, it’s only for serious experts. The period is long, so it should hold up well at this reef, but the cross-shore wind might put a wrinkle on it. Still, this is the biggest pulse of the whole outlook – promising, but uncertain that far out.
Monday, July 20th drops to 10ft but stays strong, with moderate cross-off winds. Then Tuesday, July 21st sees strong (28 mph) cross-off winds and a 8.2ft SSW swell – poor conditions, stay home.
Wednesday, July 22nd through Thursday, July 23rd clean up beautifully. July 22nd has 8.2ft SW swell (14-second period) with light offshore winds and excellent conditions – energy at 3001–3237 (very strong). July 23rd kicks up to 10ft SW swell with a 15-second period – very long period groundswell, the longest in the outlook – and a glassy offshore wind from the NW in the morning. That’s a gem: long period means well-shaped, powerful waves but it could break straight at a beach break; here at this reef, it should be epic. Energy at 4073 (very strong). The afternoon gets a light cross-
