Table - best surf conditions forecast for Magna Tubes over the next 16 days.

Hey, Rusty here. Let’s break down the 16-day outlook for Magna Tubes. This is a reef break for the advanced crew, no beginners allowed. The water’s at 64°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so grab a thick wetsuit.

The first few days are pretty rough. Sunday the 12th through Wednesday the 15th have some swell, but the wind is a mess – cross-onshore or just cross, with moderate breezes and choppy conditions. The wave energy is moderate (1000 to 592), but the quality is poor. Not worth paddling out.

Thursday the 16th is the big one for the first week. We’ve got a solid 10ft groundswell from the SW, with a very long period of 14 seconds, and it’s glassy in the morning. The combined energy is strong (3278). This is for experts only – powerful and clean. Conditions are excellent for experienced surfers, so if you’ve got the guts, this is the standout.

Friday the 17th sees the swell bump up to 13ft from the SW, period 13 seconds, but the wind shifts to a fresh cross-offshore in the morning (25 km/h). The energy is very strong (4763), but the wind makes it marginal. By the afternoon, onshore wind and rain ruin it.

Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are mixed. Saturday is blown out with fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions, despite a 6ft swell. Sunday the 19th morning, though, is clean with a light cross-offshore wind, 6ft swell from the east, period 9 seconds, and good energy (1495). That’s a solid paddle session.

The middle of the week, Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, drop off. Monday has 4ft clean waves, but lower energy (498). Tuesday the 21st is tiny in the morning and then blows up to 15ft from the SW in the afternoon, but with a fresh cross-onshore wind – that’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle one.

Now, the second week gets wild. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th bring excellent conditions for experienced surfers. Thursday morning has 8ft from the SSW, period 14 seconds, with offshore wind and clean conditions. The energy is strong (2367). Friday the 24th afternoon has 7ft from the SSW, period 18 seconds (very long), and light cross-shore winds. The energy is very strong (5707). Both are promising, but the long period means the reef will handle it best.

The real monster is Sunday the 26th. The morning shows a massive 21ft swell from the SW, period 13 seconds, with clean cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is off the charts at 12421. It’s wind and tide favorable, but the swell is too big for this break. Only the absolute elite should even think about it. The afternoon is similar, with 20ft and energy at 12990.

Monday the 27th morning backs down to 12ft from the SSW, period 12 seconds, and it’s glassy. That’s another excellent session for experts, with strong energy (3402).

Overall, the standout is Thursday the 16th morning – glassy, long-period groundswell, and excellent quality. For the second week, Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are the ones to watch, but it’s long range, so a bit less certain. Don’t bother with the first few days, and avoid the 20ft+ days unless you’re a madman.

Rusty.
