The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the outlook for Magna Tubes.
We’ve got a solid run of swell ahead, but this is a reef break that demands respect. It’s exposed to the swell, and it’s an advanced-only wave. The water temp is about what you’d expect for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
We start off on Friday the 17th of July with some decent size. The morning is looking clean with a light offshore wind, and the swell is a solid 10.0ft from the SW with a nice 12-second period pushing a lot of energy. That’s a proper groundswell, and while the long period can make it a bit too straight at beach breaks, for a reef like Magna Tubes, it’s ideal. The afternoon turns a bit cross-shore, but it’s still surfable. This is a solid start, but it’s not the standout.
The real standout moment comes on Monday the 20th of July. The morning is glassy, dead calm wind, with a clean 6.9ft SW swell on a 10-second period. The energy is moderate, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. For a reef break, glassy conditions are about as good as it gets. That’s the pick of the first week.
We get a bit of a lull through the middle of the week, but hold on for Wednesday the 22nd of July. The afternoon session pumps up with a 10.0ft SW swell, 12-second period, and a massive energy reading. The wind is light and clean, setting up what’s described as exceptional surf for experts. That’s a big, powerful swell. If you’re experienced, this is a window.
The next big one, and the best on offer overall, is Friday the 24th of July. The morning serves up an 11.5ft SW swell with a 16-second period, carrying a huge amount of energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore, keeping it clean. That’s a very long-period groundswell, and on a reef, it’s going to be organized, heavy, and offering some serious barrels. It’s a big wave, so experts only, but it’s the standout of the entire run.
Saturday the 25th of July morning is also huge, with an 11.5ft SW swell and a 16-second period, and the energy is even larger. The wind is offshore but a bit stronger, so it’s still clean, but the sheer size and power make it a beast. Saturday the 26th of July then sees the swell peak at 16.4ft from the SSW. That’s a serious pulse of energy, but the wind is messy, creating a cross-chop. It’s going to be raw and challenging.
After that, the swell drops. There’s a gap of a few days before another decent offering on Tuesday the 28th of July and Wednesday the 29th of July, with clean conditions and 3.6ft to 4.3ft of SW swell. These are smaller, cleaner windows for the experienced crew who want a mellower session. The energy is a lot weaker.
By the end of the month and into August, the swell fades right out. The last few days have very small, weak waves, and the wind is mostly onshore, so it’s not worth paddling out.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re an expert, the Monday the 20th of July morning is your calm, glassy session. The absolute standout, though, is Friday the 24th of July morning for the massive, long-period groundswell and clean conditions. That’s the one to circle.
