The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. I'm looking at Magna-Tubes, and this reef break is going to be pumping, but it's only for the hardcore crew. This is an advanced wave, and that's the story for most of the forecast.

The pattern is a long run of heavy, groundswell from the southwest, but the wind is going to be the deciding factor. We get a clean start, then a rough patch, then a killer window at the very end.

The first real chance is Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. The swell is a solid 10ft from the SW, with a 13-second period. That's a lot of energy (2580) pushing through. The water is a frigid 54°, which is a massive 12° colder than usual. That's way colder than normal, so you'll need a thick hood and gloves. The wind is a light 3 mph cross-offshore from the SW, keeping it clean. It's excellent for experienced surfers, but that's a lot of juice. Wednesday afternoon, the wind jumps to 16 mph, and the quality drops. Get it in the morning.

Thursday, the 20th, is the big one. Thursday morning, the swell hits 13ft from the SW, period 14 seconds, and the wave energy is massive (5413). The wind is a clean 9 mph cross-offshore from the WSW. This is exceptional surf for experts only. At over 8ft, it's strictly for the serious chargers. Thursday afternoon, the wind goes cross-shore, adding some chop, so the morning is the only window.

Friday, the 21st, turns ugly. The wind goes onshore from the E, blowing 16 mph by the afternoon. The swell is still a decent 8ft, but it's going to be a mess. Saturday, the 22nd, is a write-off with brutal 25 mph cross-offshore winds. The energy is dropping, but the wind is just too strong.

We get a reset on Sunday the 23rd. The swell is back to 12ft from the SW, with a 9 mph cross-offshore wind in the morning. It's a big, powerful wave, but the wind is light enough to keep it clean. Still, that's a lot of water for anyone but the experts.

The week of the 24th to the 26th is a mixed bag of onshore winds and cross-offshore breezes. The swell stays solid, between 7ft and 8ft, but the wind is rarely perfect. The 24th of August has a morning session with 8ft swell and a light 6 mph cross-offshore wind, which is about the best of that run. The 26th of August has a morning with a 7ft, 16-second groundswell, but the wind is a light cross-shore from the NNE.

The real standout is the 1st of September. Tuesday morning. The swell is 7ft from the SW with a 14-second period, and the wind is glassy. Absolutely glassy, from the ENE at 3 mph. The energy is strong (2202), and it's all going to be perfectly lined up. This is the one. It's a long way out, so don't set your watch by it, but if that forecast holds, it will be the best session of the entire outlook. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" at Magna-Tubes, so expect a few others to have the same idea.

The very last day, Thursday the 3rd of September, has a massive 18ft, 13-second swell on the afternoon, but the wind is a 12 mph cross-offshore. That's an insane amount of energy (10644), but it's borderline unsurfable. That's a bomb to watch.

So, the best bets are Thursday morning the 20th for the raw power, and Tuesday morning the 1st of September for the clean, glassy perfection. Everything else is a fight.

Rusty, out.
