The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s happening at Victoria Bay.
Right now, the forecast kicks off with a bit of a flat spell. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning are looking pretty weak, with only marginal energy and small, short-period waves. Not worth paddling out for. But hold on, because things take a big turn from Wednesday afternoon.
Wednesday afternoon the 15th, the bay starts to wake up. A solid 6ft swell from the southwest rolls in, with a period of 11 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. The combined energy jumps up to 1857 (moderate to strong), and conditions are clean. This is the first real standout.
Then Thursday, the 16th, is the peak of this first pulse. Thursday morning you’ve got 8ft of SW swell, 14-second period, glassy calm. That’s a long-period groundswell, and it’s pumping with a combined energy of 2100 (strong). Thursday afternoon stays glassy with 7ft. This is for experienced surfers though – over 8ft on the bigger sets, it’s getting into expert territory.
Friday the 17th sees a bit of a drop in quality as the wind turns cross-onshore, making things a little bumpy, but there’s still plenty of swell. Saturday morning the 18th is small again, but glassy, with 4ft from the south. Then Sunday afternoon the 19th, another strong window: glassy, 7ft SW swell, 12-second period, and combined energy at 1330 (strong). Clean lines.
The real monster arrives on Tuesday the 21st. Tuesday afternoon is looking exceptional – 13ft of SSW swell, a 16-second period, and glassy winds. That’s a very long-period groundswell, and the combined energy is a massive 8697 (very strong). This is strictly for experts. The bay will be a freight train, but if you’re good, it’s unreal.
The swell stays big through the following days, with Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd still offering 10ft to 13ft, mostly glassy or with light offshore winds. The water temperature is sitting at 62°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so not a wetsuit drama.
By the end of the month, around the 27th and 28th, the wind gets messy with strong breezes and rain, so the quality drops right off. But the 29th of July brings a nice offshore wind from the NNW, clean conditions, and 12ft of SW swell – another good one for those who know what they’re doing.
Victoria Bay (Victoria-Bay) is a reef and point setup, very consistent, and it’s exposed to the south swell. The optimum swell direction is straight south, and this forecast delivers that. Crowds can be a thing here sometimes, so get in early. The long-period swells will wrap in nicely on the point, giving good shape, but the beach breaks nearby might close out.
For the best windows, I’d call Thursday the 16th and Tuesday the 21st as the standouts. Thursday for the glassy, clean power at 8ft, and Tuesday for the epic, heavy, expert-only 13ft. Don’t sleep on the 15th and 19th either – they’re solid. The rest of the run has a lot of energy, but you’ll need to pick your winds.
Rusty.
