The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s take a look at what’s coming for Victoria Bay.
We’ve got a solid run of surf on the way, but it’s not all game on. The first real standout for me lands right at the start. Thursday the 20th morning is a gem: a clean 12ft SSW groundswell with a long 14-second period and glassy, offshore S wind at just 3 mph. That’s proper energy flowing in (4324), but with that size and period, this is for the experienced crew only – the reef and point setup will love this direction, shaping up some serious lines. Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Through the rest of that week and the following, there are windows. Friday the 21st and Saturday morning the 23rd offer clean-ish 6ft and 7ft SW swells, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not the polished glass we like. Monday the 24th afternoon gets glassy again with a 5ft SW 11-second swell, but the energy is lower (1184) – a nice one for a quiet paddle.
Now, the true highlight on the long-range watch is Tuesday the 1st of September morning. A big 13ft SW swell with a 12-second period, glassy conditions, and the combined energy is massive (6679). This is expert territory only – it will be powerful, but if you’ve got the skills, that’s a session to remember. The wind is pure glass, so the point will be lined up and clean. The afternoon is still solid at 10ft with clean cross-off wind, but the morning is the call.
Outside of that, the rest of the first week of September drops off into smaller 5ft to 3ft swells with more cross or onshore wind – just background waves for a fun but not epic session. And from the 3rd onward, the run fades to small, weak surf with only marginal energy.
In summary: if you’re a solid intermediate or better, Thursday morning the 20th and especially Tuesday morning the 1st of September are your days. The rest is for filling the diary with a few clean glassy windows, but those two are the standouts.
