The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Fish Boma. This spot’s a reef break, exposed to the south swell, and it’s fairly consistent so there’s plenty to talk about over the next couple of weeks. Water temp is sitting around 63°F which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We start off with Wednesday afternoon, the 15th of July, and honestly, it’s a bit of a messy one. There’s a 7ft swell from the southwest with a period of 9 seconds, but the wind’s a cross-onshore breeze at 12 mph making it choppy. The combined energy is strong at 2274, but the quality’s not there for a good paddle. It’s a write-off.
Thursday morning, the 16th, is where things start to look up. That southwest swell has built to 8ft with a period of 14 seconds – proper groundswell energy. Wind is glassy, absolutely dead calm, so the surface will be like a mirror. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Combined energy is pumping at 2684. This is a standout session if you’ve got the skills.
Thursday afternoon gets a bit more wind on it, light cross-onshore, and the swell drops a touch to 8ft. Still decent but not as clean as the morning. Friday the 17th sees the swell holding around 7-8ft but the wind goes cross-shore, so it’s a bit ripply. Not the best.
Saturday the 18th morning is small at 4ft and weak, but Saturday afternoon the wind goes glassy again with a 6ft southwest swell, period 12 seconds. Combined energy is 998, so moderate, but that clean surface will make it fun for a cruisy session.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are pretty average – onshore winds, choppy conditions, with swell around 5-5ft. Not worth getting too excited about.
Now, here’s the big one. Tuesday morning the 21st of July. This is the standout of the whole outlook. A solid 12ft swell from the south-southwest with a very long 14-second period, and the wind is glassy from the east at just 3 mph. Combined energy is massive at 5496. This is exceptional for experts – it’s big, powerful, and clean. If you’ve got the nerve and the quiver, this is the morning to be out there. Tuesday afternoon stays clean with cross-offshore wind and 12ft swell. Still excellent.
Wednesday the 22nd gets messy again with strong cross-onshore winds hitting 19 mph and that swell jumps to 20ft with a 14-second period. Combined energy goes through the roof at 12373, but with those winds, it’s more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session. Thursday the 23rd morning drops to 15ft, period 16 seconds, light cross-onshore, but Thursday afternoon is another absolute gem: 13ft from the south-southwest, 15-second period, and glassy calm wind. That’s exceptional for experts again. Combined energy is 7440.
Friday the 24th is blown out with strong winds over 22 mph – steer clear. Saturday the 25th of July is a return to form: 8ft southwest swell, 15-second period, and offshore wind from the north-northeast at 6 mph in the morning, going glassy in the afternoon. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers with combined energy at 3477 and 4533. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get in early.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are on the messy side with cross-onshore and cross-shore winds, swell holding around 8-10ft. Not terrible but not clean.
Tuesday the 28th stays around 10ft with a 14-second period but winds are cross-shore and cross-onshore, so it’s choppy. Wednesday morning the 29th is another glassy session – 8ft from the southwest, 12-second period, and dead calm. Good for experienced surfers. Thursday the 30th morning is glassy again with a 10ft south-southwest swell, 15-second period, combined energy 3962. That’s excellent.
So, if you’re picking the best, it’s Thursday morning the 16th and Tuesday morning the 21st for pure power and glass. The Thursday the 23rd afternoon glass-off is also a beast. Later on, Saturday the 25th and Thursday the 30th mornings are top quality too.
