The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look.

Alright, so we're looking at a single spot here: Fish Boma. It’s a reef setup, exposed to the south swell. It’s a fairly consistent wave, and when it's on, it can offer some proper intermediate-level rides. The water is sitting at 58° right now, which feels much colder than normal for this time of year – that anomaly of 5° below average is a real kick in the guts for anyone not wearing a thick rubber.

The start of this forecast period is a bit grim. Through Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th, you’ve got a decent 8ft to 8ft SW swell (12-second period), but it’s plagued by cross-onshore winds and the comments are all calling it marginal. There's a lot of energy, but the quality just isn't there. Thursday the 20th sees the swell jump up proper – 12ft from the SSW on Thursday morning, with a combined energy of 4447. That’s some serious raw power, but it’s still cross-on with a light breeze and the call is marginal.

It’s not really until Friday morning the 21st that things perk up. The swell drops back to a still-chunky 7ft from the SW (12 seconds), but the wind shifts to a clean cross-offshore from the east at 9 mph. The morning and afternoon both look clean and excellent for experienced surfers. That’s our first real window of quality.

Saturday the 22nd goes downhill quickly with a moderate cross-onshore breeze creating choppy, poor surf. Sunday the 23rd brings back a big 10ft SW swell, but it’s cross-on again, keeping it marginal. The trend continues into the next week, with a lot of solid swell but poor wind alignment.

Now, here’s where we find the true standout. Wednesday morning on the 26th of August. The swell is a manageable 6ft from the SW, but the period is a solid 13 seconds. What makes this special is the wind: glassy. Absolutely dead calm. The water will be like a mirror. For an exposed reef, that’s a rare gift. The combined energy is 1161, which is moderate, but the clean conditions will make every wave count. It’s an expert session for sure, but for those who can handle it, it’s the pick of the bunch in this first week.

Fast forward to the 27th of August, Thursday afternoon, we get another glassy window with a 5ft SSE swell at a very long 14-second period. That’s a groundswell, which can be a bit straight at some spots, but on a reef it could really line up.

As we get into the second week, the pattern holds. A lot of swell, but the wind needs to play ball. Friday the 28th afternoon looks like another great chance – glassy conditions again with a 5ft SW swell and a very long 15-second period. That’s some serious pulse.

The real highlight of the entire 16-day run looks like Monday the 31st of August morning. You’ve got a clean, cross-offshore wind from the east at 6 mph, a 7ft SW swell, and an incredibly long 16-second period. The energy reading is 2340, which is strong. That’s the kind of long-period groundswell that will wrap into the reef beautifully, giving long, powerful walls. Just be aware, by that afternoon the wind gets fresh from the west at 19 mph, turning it into a lumpy mess, so get your session in early.

The first few days of September are more of the same: plenty of swell but you're fighting the wind. Overall, the forecast is a real tease – lots of power, but only a few golden windows of clean glass. If you’re hungry, the 26th morning, the 28th afternoon, and the 31st morning are your sessions.
