The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards, but this one isn’t for the groms. The size is going to be pushing into serious territory, so we’re looking at a window mainly for experienced surfers, especially through the heart of the period. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing freaky there.
The action kicks off on Thursday morning, July 16th, with a clean, glassy start. The swell is coming in at 8 ft from the SW, with a period of 14 seconds, generating a lot of energy (2684). That’s proper groundswell, and it’s going to be setting up nicely. The wind is dead calm, which is a huge plus. The pocket is there, but at this size, it’s a heavy wave. By Thursday afternoon, the wind swings and gets a bit cross-onshore, so the morning is definitely the pick.
Friday morning, July 17th, is another glassy one. The swell drops a touch to 8 ft, still SW, still a solid 12-second period, and the energy is still pumping (1503). The wind is light and offshore, so the face will be clean. This is a great window for a session.
The weekend is a bit of a mixed bag. Saturday, July 18th, sees a drop in size and some cross-onshore wind, so it’s not as clean. Sunday, July 19th, starts with a bit of wind, but then Sunday afternoon goes dead calm again. The swell is a solid 7 ft from the SW, period of 12 seconds, and the energy is still there (1218). That glass-off in the afternoon is the standout for the weekend.
Now, look out for Tuesday, July 21st. The swell is going to pump up to 10 ft from the SSW, with a very long 15-second period. The energy jumps to 3533. It’s a cross-onshore wind, so the surface won’t be perfect, but the power is immense. That’s big, heavy water. Only for the well-prepared.
The real standout, the one to circle on the calendar, is Saturday, July 25th. We’re looking at a 12 ft SW swell with a 16-second period, generating massive energy (5526). That’s a serious, long-period groundswell. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it’s workable. This is a big, powerful ocean; a point break or reef would handle this much better than a beach break. The following morning, Sunday, July 26th, is also looking fantastic: 10 ft SW swell, 14-second period, and glassy conditions. That’s as good as it gets for the experienced crew.
There’s a bit of a lull after that with some smaller, cleaner days, and then we get a proper late-surge on the 30th and 31st. Thursday, July 30th, the swell is 13 ft to 15 ft, and the energy is off the charts (6538-8168). The wind is cross-offshore, so the wave faces will be clean. That’s huge, and only for the experts. Friday morning, July 31st, is also 13 ft with clean conditions.
So, the two big standouts for the crew who can handle it: Sunday, July 26th morning for the glassy, clean 10 ft conditions, and Thursday, July 30th afternoon for the sheer, raw power of the 15 ft swell with clean cross-offshore wind. Don’t get caught inside.
Rusty.
