The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Fish Boma over the next couple of weeks.

First things first, the water's running real cold right now – we're talking 57°F which is 6°F colder than usual for this time of year. That's a serious step down, so a thicker wetsuit is a must if you're paddling out.

Alright, we've got a bit of a slow start. There's nothing really worth getting excited about on Friday the 21st or Saturday the 22nd. The swell's there, but the wind's a mess and conditions are just marginal to poor. We're looking at a couple of days of choppy, onshore junk. The combined energy is moderate to strong, reading 1256 on Friday morning, but it doesn't matter when the surface is blown out.

We get a bit of a pick-up on Sunday the 23rd. The morning sees a 8ft SW swell (period 11 seconds) with a light cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to 1540, showing there's some decent power. It's still a bit onshore though, so it's not firing. Sunday afternoon is much the same, with a 7ft SW groundswell.

The best run of the first week looks like it's shaping up for Tuesday the 25th. We've got a solid 8ft groundswell from the SW, a 14-second period, and the wind is light cross-shore. The combined energy hits a strong 2805. This is the one to circle on the calendar – good size, long-period lines, and clean enough to be fun.

Wednesday the 26th still has strong energy (2048 in the morning), with a clean 6ft swell from the SW under light offshore winds (E 12 mph). The afternoon turns a bit weird though – it jumps to 10ft but from the ESE with only a 7-second period, and the wind cranks up to 19 mph. That's gonna be bumpy and short-period, leaving it pretty average.

From Thursday the 27th through to Sunday the 31st, we're looking at a stretch of below-par conditions. Swell sizes drop back into the 5 to 7ft range, but the wind keeps swinging around onshore or cross-onshore. There's a cleanish session on Friday morning the 28th (5ft, S swell, light offshore) but it’s only rated as marginal.

The real standout – and I mean the one that has me talking – comes up on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Look at this: a 10ft SW groundswell with a massive 16-second period, combined energy of 4909, and glassy conditions. That’s the kind of session that gets the heart pumping. It's going to be a proper groundswell – plenty of power, long lines, and those clean faces. Just a heads-up, though: at 10ft, this is expert territory. It will be too big for beginners.

The afternoon of the 2nd turns onshore and choppy again. And don't even think about Thursday the 3rd – we’re looking at 16 to 20ft of messy, wind-affected swell with 16 mph cross-shore winds. That's a kite-boarding setup, not for a paddle surfer.

We finish off the run with a settling trend. Friday the 4th of September has a strong 10ft S swell and a 14-second period in the afternoon, with a clean offshore breeze, but it’s a bit of a beast. By Saturday the 5th, it drops back down to a more manageable 6ft.

So, if you're looking to get wet, your best bets are Tuesday the 25th for a solid clean session, and Wednesday the 2nd of September if you've got the experience and want something truly special. Keep an eye on that 2nd – it’s a long way out, but the signals are all green.

Rusty out.
