The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Fish Boma over the next couple of weeks.
First up, we’ve got a solid run of swell energy comin’ through, but it’s not all gonna be clean. The water temp is sittin’ at 57°, which is a frigid 6° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you’ll be wantin’ a thick steamer and booties, no doubt.
The standout window kicks off Thursday afternoon, August 20th. Fish Boma is a reef break, exposed to the south, and we’ve got a 10ft SW groundswell with a 13-second period – that’s proper long-period energy. The combined swell energy is strong at 3379, and the wind is glassy from the south at just 3 mph. That’s the kind of setup that’ll have the reef groomin’ out some beauty lines. This is for experienced surfers only, though – 10ft is too big for beginners. The optimum swell direction is S, and this is comin’ from SW, so it’s a little off the peak, but with that size and period, it’ll still wrap in nicely. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so you might not be alone.
Friday morning, August 21st, drops to 7ft SW with a 12-second period and a light ESE cross-shore at 6 mph. It’s a drop in size, but that cross-shore will keep it a bit bumpy. The energy is still moderate at 1256, but it’s a more marginal call.
Saturday and Sunday, the 22nd and 23rd, see the wind turn cross-onshore, makin’ things choppy and messy. The swell sticks around 5ft to 8ft, but the quality is poor. I’d give those days a miss.
Monday, August 24th, is still cross-onshore, but the swell drops to 5ft–6ft SW with a 12-second period. The energy is weaker at around 800. Still not worth paddlin’ out for.
Then we get a decent little spike Tuesday, August 25th. The swell jumps to 8ft SW with a 14-second period – that’s a long-period groundswell. The combined energy is strong at 2846. Mornin’ has a light E cross-shore, but by afternoon the wind goes cross-offshore from the east at 12 mph, which cleans it right up. This is a solid, punchy day for the more experienced crew. The 8ft is pushin’ into expert territory, but the cross-off wind will make it look real good.
Wednesday, August 26th morning gives us a glassy morning with 5ft SW swell and a 13-second period. The wind is glassy from the ENE at 3 mph. That is a proper clean session, but the energy is moderate at 1101. A nice day for a quieter paddle if you can get out before the afternoon cross-shore messes it up.
From Thursday, August 27th through to the end of the month, the swell drops off and the wind gets messy. There’s a glassy moment on Thursday afternoon with 4ft S swell, but the energy is only 563, so it’s small and weak.
Saturday, August 29th, is worth a mention. The swell picks up to 5ft–6ft SW with a 14-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore from the east at 6–12 mph. That’ll give clean, lined-up waves, but the energy is still moderate. A good day for the intermediate to advanced crew.
Now, lookin’ into the first week of September – there’s a big spike comin’ Wednesday, September 2nd. The forecast shows a 20ft SW swell with a 15-second period – that’s a very long period, massive groundswell. The combined energy is a whopping 23583, which is extremely strong. But the wind is onshore from the SW. And the data says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That’s a pass for most, even for experts – that’s kite-surfing territory if anything.
Thursday, September 3rd, is still huge at 18ft SW with a 14-second period and light cross-onshore wind. Again, too big for paddle surfing at Fish Boma. The afternoon drop to 8ft SW with a 12-second period is more manageable, but still cross-onshore.
Friday, September 4th, has 10ft SW swell droppin’ to 8ft, with a light cross-shore wind by afternoon. The energy is moderate to strong. It’s a big, heavy day, suited only for experienced surfers.
Overall, the best of the lot is Thursday afternoon, August 20th – that glassy 10ft SW groundswell is the standout. The second pick is Tuesday, August 25th afternoon, with that clean cross-off wind and 8ft SW groundswell. After that, there’s a long gap of poor conditions until Saturday, August 29th, which offers a clean, smaller option.
