The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checkin’ in from the local sandbar. We’ve got a long-range look at Fish Boma, and it’s a mixed bag of solid swell and tricky wind. The water is sittin’ at 58° right now, which is a couple of degrees colder than normal for this time of year – you’ll feel that chill on your first duck dive.
Saturday the 22nd is a write-off, mate. Wind’s howlin’ from the west at 19 mph, cross-on and lumpy, with a weak 5.6 ft – not worth paddling out. The combined energy is low (830), and the whole day is a no-go.
Sunday the 23rd is where we start to see a pulse. The morning has clean offshore wind from the SSW, pushin’ a 6.9 ft SW swell at 11 seconds. Energy jumps to 1309, and it’s lookin’ fun and hollow. The afternoon turns a little cross-on, but still a solid session.
Monday the 24th drops a notch. Swell backs off to 5.2 ft, still SW, but the wind is light cross-on both morning and afternoon. It’s surfable, but nothing to get too excited about – energy sits around 645 to 846.
Tuesday the 25th is a big step up. Swell builds to 8.2 ft from the SW, period stretchin’ to 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The morning is cross-on, but the afternoon swings cross-shore with a light breeze. Energy is huge – 2756 in the morning, 3472 in the afternoon. This is fishin’ for experienced surfers only; 8.2 ft is at the top end for most.
Wednesday the 26th holds solid at 5.9 ft to 6.2 ft, but the wind is howlin’ offshore from the east at 12 to 22 mph. That keeps the face clean, but the afternoon breeze is a fresh 22 mph, which will make it a battle to stay in position. Energy is still strong (2359 to 2423).
Thursday the 27th is a standout. The morning is glassy – dead calm, with the wind from the ESE at just 3 mph. Swell is 5.9 ft, SW, 12 seconds, and the energy is 1424. The afternoon is pure glass too, with zero wind. This is the best clean surf of the early window. The crowd factor is “sometimes” at Fish Boma, so you might get a few out, but it’s worth the paddle.
Friday the 28th stays clean. Morning is glassy again with a 4.6 ft S swell at 11 seconds, and the afternoon turns cross-off with the wind from the east. Energy is 1007 to 1154 – a fun, mellow day.
Saturday the 29th is a split day. The morning is a dud – 2.6 ft with a fresh 19 mph cross-off wind. But the afternoon fires up: 9.8 ft SW swell, 9-second period, and clean with light cross-off wind. That’s a big, powerful wave, but it’s short period, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. Energy is 1745.
Sunday the 30th is all 9.8 ft SW, but the wind is onshore or cross-on all day. It’s gonna be a messy, heavy washout. This is for experts only, and even then, the wind will ruin it.
Monday the 31st drops to 4.9 ft and 4.6 ft, but the wind is cross-on and choppy. Not worth the time.
Tuesday the 1st of September builds again. Morning is 6.6 ft SW with a cross-shore light breeze, afternoon hits 7.5 ft SW with a 14-second period and clean cross-off wind. Energy is 1003 to 2113 – a solid day.
Wednesday the 2nd of September is clean in the morning, with a light cross-off breeze and 6.2 ft SW swell at 13 seconds. The afternoon gets a little crossed up, but still fun.
Now, the absolute standout of the whole forecast is Thursday the 3rd of September. Morning is glassy, dead calm, with a 9.8 ft SW groundswell and a *16-second period*. That’s a very long period, meaning it’ll be a clean, powerful, machinery wave. Energy is a massive 5011 – that’s an exceptional, deep-water groundswell. This is a pulse for expert surfers only. The wave comment says “exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers,” and I’m callin’ it: this is the best day on offer. The afternoon stays solid at 8.2 ft but goes cross-on.
Friday the 4th is another glassy morning with 9.8 ft SW at 13 seconds, energy at 3430. The
