The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here with a look at the upcoming swell window for Fish Boma.
Overall, we’ve got a solid run of Southern Ocean groundswell heading our way across the next couple of weeks. It's a reef break set-up that is exposed to the south, so when the timing and wind line up, it’s going to be seriously good. The water is sitting at 63.9°F with a water temperature anomaly of 1.1°F, so pretty much bang on average for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary there.
The first couple of days are a write-off, to be honest. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are all cross-onshore wind, with that Sunday afternoon getting blown out with strong winds and poor quality. Not worth paddling out for. The wait is on.
It all starts to click from Monday morning the 20th. We’ve got glassy conditions, light WSW wind, and a clean 5.9ft swell from the southwest with an 11-second period. Wave energy is moderate (1071). The morning is the call here, as the afternoon goes a bit cross-onshore again. This is still a window for the more experienced surfer.
Tuesday the 21st is where it gets really interesting. Tuesday morning is absolute perfection – dead calm, glassy conditions, 5.2ft of swell from the south-southwest with a long 14-second period (wave energy 1389). That’s a proper groundswell, meaning good shape and longer waits between sets, which is perfect for a reef like this. It will be clean, but expect a few other people out there as crowds are sometimes an issue here.
Wednesday the 22nd sees the swell push up to a solid 9.8ft by the afternoon with glassy conditions again. That is over 8.2ft, so this is strictly for the experienced crew. A big, long-period swell (12 seconds) and very strong wave energy (2256) – this is serious ocean.
The following Thursday and Friday (23rd and 24th) remain large, with 9.8ft swell, but the wind shifts cross-onshore, so the quality drops. The best of the bunch is still holding for Saturday morning the 25th, when we get a cross-offshore breeze from the east and a clean 9.8ft southwest swell (14-second period) – excellent conditions for experienced surfers again.
The standout of the entire run? Without a doubt, Monday the 27th. The whole day is clean. Morning is clean with a solid 6.9ft southwest swell (13 seconds), and the afternoon goes glassy with a light northerly. That’s your best chance for a long, clean session on groundswell with minimal wind. Tuesday the 28th gets a bit choppy, then the window closes on the 29th with rain and building onshore winds.
Looking into the first days of August, there’s another pulse. Thursday the 30th of July has a clean 11.5ft south-southwest swell (2842 energy), but the real sleeper is Sunday, August 2nd. Morning has a clean offshore north wind with a 6.9ft east swell (10 seconds), and the afternoon goes glassy with a 4.9ft south-southwest swell (14 seconds) – an excellent way to finish the outlook.
Short Range ForecastSome drizzle, heaviest during Sun afternoon. Very mild (max 18°C on Sat morning, min 12°C on Mon morning). Wind will be generally light. | Days 4-6 Weather SummarySome drizzle, heaviest during Thu morning. Very mild (max 17°C on Tue afternoon, min 12°C on Tue morning).
