The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, the standout in this whole forecast is Fish Boma (reef). It’s a reef break, fairly consistent, and it’s exposed to the south, which is a big plus when the swell direction is dialed in. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The action kicks off Thursday, August 20th, with a solid start. Thursday morning, we’re looking at a 12 ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period. That’s a long-period swell, plenty of energy (combined energy of 4801 – that’s strong), and the wind is glassy from the WSW. This is top-shelf, clean, powerful surf, but at 12 ft it’s strictly for experienced surfers. Thursday afternoon, the swell drops a touch to 10 ft from the SW, wind swings onshore, and the quality goes marginal.
Friday, August 21st, is a step down. Morning sees a 7 ft SW swell with a cross-shore wind, so it’s a bit choppy. The energy is moderate (1256). Friday afternoon, the swell drops to 5 ft, and while the wind is cross-offshore and clean, the wave size is small.
The weekend is a write-off. Saturday, August 22nd, and Sunday, August 23rd morning looks promising with a glassy 7 ft SW swell and moderate energy (1242), but the morning is the only real window. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are messy, with cross-onshore wind and chop. Combined energy for those is moderate, but the quality is poor.
Monday, August 24th, is marginal with onshore wind and 5 ft swell. Tuesday, August 25th, brings a bigger bump: a 8 ft SW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. That’s a lot of energy (3594), but at 8 ft it’s for experts. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s a bit bumpy, but the power is there. Wednesday, August 26th, is cleaner with 6 ft, cross-offshore wind, and moderate energy.
Now, here’s the real highlight. Tuesday, September 1st, is when things get seriously exciting. Tuesday morning, we’ve got a 13 ft SW swell with a 12-second period. The combined energy is a massive 7916 – that’s very strong wave energy. The wind is glassy. This is exceptional, groundswell, but it’s huge. Only for expert surfers. Tuesday afternoon, it drops to 10 ft, still glassy, excellent conditions.
Before that, Monday, August 31st, is also a cracker. Monday morning, a 12 ft SW swell with glassy wind and strong energy (3607). Monday afternoon, 10 ft, clean, cross-offshore wind. Both are excellent.
After that big Tuesday, things settle down. Wednesday, September 2nd, is still good with 5 ft–5 ft, glassy to clean, excellent conditions. The energy drops to moderate (1088). Thursday, September 3rd, turns marginal again with onshore wind and dropping swell. Friday, September 4th, is small, with 3 ft, glassy but very weak energy (284).
So, the best on offer is hands-down the morning of Tuesday, September 1st, for expert surfers – that 13 ft glassy groundswell is a monster. For a more manageable but still excellent session, Monday, August 31st, is your go-to, with 12 ft and clean conditions. Just be aware, with that long period, the reef might be the spot to handle it.
Rusty, signing off.
