The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break down Fish Boma. This is a reef break, open to the south swell, and it breaks fairly consistently. The water’s around 62°F, which is about normal for this time of year – nothing unusual.

The first surf worth mentionin’ is on Wednesday morning, 15th July, but it’s a weak start. A 3ft swell from the east, with a short 9-second period, and a cross-on breeze. The energy’s low (483). Not worth your time. Later that afternoon, the swell comes up to 7ft from the southwest, still cross-on, with moderate energy (2119), but the wind’s a problem.

Now, Thursday morning, 16th July – here we go. The swell is 8ft from the southwest, period jumps to 14 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. That’s a proper groundswell, strong energy (2706). This is for experienced surfers only – that size is serious, but the conditions are perfect. Thursday afternoon stays glassy with a 8ft southwest swell. Friday morning, 17th July, is more of the same: 8ft southwest, 12-second period, glassy. Three killer sessions in a row.

Saturday, 18th July, drops off hard. A 3ft south swell with a cross wind and weak energy (521). Not much there. Sunday, 19th July, sees a 7ft southwest swell return, but the cross-on wind ruins it.

Monday, 20th July, is a sneaky decent one. The morning brings a 6ft southwest swell, 10-second period, and glassy conditions with calm wind. Energy is moderate (811). It’s a good one for a wider range of surfers, clean and not too big.

Tuesday, 21st July, is a big day. The morning swell jumps to 13ft southwest with a 13-second period, but it’s cross-on. The energy is strong (4914). That afternoon, it goes to 16ft from the southwest with a 15-second period, cross-on, and energy is huge (10270). That’s a monster. Only for the brave, and the wind’s a bummer.

Wednesday, 22nd July, the swell is still big at 12ft in the morning, cross-on, but the afternoon glassy conditions with a 7ft southwest swell bring a sweet reprieve.

The real standout is Thursday, 23rd July. The morning has a 15ft southwest swell, cross-on, but the afternoon is the winner: 16ft from the south-southwest, 15-second period, glassy wind, and energy is off the charts (10619). That is exceptional – expert-only, perfect conditions. Friday, 24th July, keeps the goods with a 12ft swell and glassy morning conditions, but the afternoon gets messy.

The next week has a few more good windows. Sunday, 26th July, has a 8ft southwest swell with a 14-second period and glassy morning conditions – excellent for experienced surfers. Monday, 27th July, is a bit smaller at 5ft southwest, but glassy and clean, with a 14-second period, so it’s a nice one for a wider crowd. Tuesday, 28th July, sees a 10ft southwest swell return, but the cross-on wind dogs it.

The last real standout is Wednesday, 29th July. The morning brings a 7ft southwest swell, 13-second period, and glassy conditions. Solid for experienced surfers, with moderate energy (1546). The afternoon gets trashed by a strong cross wind, so get in early.

This spot can get crowded sometimes, so if you’re aimin’ for the glassy mornings, get there early.

The best bets are Thursday 16th, Friday 17th, and the absolute standout is Thursday 23rd July afternoon – that’s the one to circle. Plenty of action in the window, but those are the gems.

Rusty.
