The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's talk about what's coming up in the next couple of weeks, in feet and all that.
We've got a solid run of surf on the way, but it's not all the same story. The first few days are a bit of a mixed bag, but there's some serious energy building for the second week. The standout window is looking like the end of July and the start of August, with some proper groundswell lining up.
Friday, July 17th kicks things off, and Fish Boma is the only game in town. The morning is looking sweet – a clean 8ft SW swell (12-second period, so a nice groundswell) with glassy conditions. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is bang on average for the time of year, so no surprises there. The wave energy is strong (1503). This is for the experienced crew, as 8ft is getting up there. The afternoon goes glassy-calm, dropping to 7ft SW. It's a solid start, but it's not the best of the fortnight.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a bit of a write-off. The swell drops, the wind goes cross-onshore, and it gets a bit choppy. Sunday afternoon sees a 8ft swell but with a 15 mph cross-onshore wind, which is just messy. A couple of days to sit out.
Monday the 20th brings a new lease of life. The morning is glassy again with a 6ft SW swell, and the energy is moderate (964). Clean conditions make it a good, fun size.
Tuesday the 21st has a super interesting morning: a 3ft swell, but look at that period – 14 seconds! That's a true long-period groundswell. Glassy conditions too. It won't be huge, but the quality of the wave shape will be excellent. The afternoon picks up to 6ft on the same long period (14 seconds), but gets a cross-on breeze.
Wednesday the 22nd is a big one. The morning is a bit messy with a cross-shore wind, but the afternoon... glassy, 7ft SW swell with a 13-second period, and strong energy (1520). This is an excellent afternoon for the experienced surfer.
Thursday the 23rd is when things ramp up. The morning is clean with a cross-offshore wind and a solid 10ft SW swell. The energy is very strong (2502). This is getting into expert territory at 10ft. The afternoon is the same size but with a cross-shore breeze.
Friday, July 24th is where the true standout sits. This is the best on offer. The morning is a dream: glassy, 12ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is massive (5434). This is "exceptional" condition for expert surfers, and the crowd factor is listed as "sometimes" – so you might have some company, but it's not a certainty. The afternoon bumps up to 13ft with the same long period, but the wind goes onshore, making it a bit of a beast. For the experienced crew, the morning of the 24th is the one to circle.
Saturday the 25th gets a bit sloppy with a strong cross-onshore wind, so that's a day to pick your moment carefully.
Sunday the 26th is another cracker. The morning is clean with a cross-offshore breeze and a 6ft SSW swell on a huge 16-second period. Then the afternoon is a masterpiece: 10ft SSW swell, 17-second period, cross-offshore wind, and exceptional conditions. The energy is through the roof (6083). Another expert-level session.
Monday the 27th stays clean and solid with a 8ft SSW swell, keeping the run of good waves going.
Tuesday the 28th sees things drop slightly, but a clean 5ft SW swell with a 14-second period is still a very good wave.
After that, the last few days of July and into August keep a decent amount of swell in the water, with clean conditions through the mornings. July 31st and August 1st both show 10ft SW swells in clean conditions, which is another strong window for the experts.
So, to wrap it up: we've got a couple of quiet days at the start, then a fantastic run of swell from the 22nd onwards. The absolute standouts are the morning of Friday, July 24th and the afternoon of Sunday, July 26th. If you're an experienced surfer, that's your target. The swell gets big, so the beginners will want to sit this one out for the most part.
Rusty.
