The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s ahead for Fish Boma.
Looks like most of the action this fortnight is for the crew that knows their way around a bigger, more powerful wave. This is a reef setup, exposed to the south swells, and for the first few days we’ve got some proper groundswell rolling in. Water temp is sitting around 64°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
Sunday morning the 19th kicks things off with a clean 5 ft SW groundswell with a 12-second period and glassy conditions – real nice way to start the day. Wave energy is moderate (837). Afternoon goes rubbish though, with onshore wind and rain showers chopping it up. Monday morning 20th is back to glassy, 6 ft SW swell at 11 seconds, and the wave energy picks up a bit (1051). This is good, clean surf for the experienced surfer.
Now Tuesday the 21st morning – that’s a standout. Glassy as can be, with a 6 ft SSW swell at a very long 14-second period. The energy is really pumping (1695). This is a proper groundswell, which on this reef should produce some long, well-shaped lines. The long period means longer lulls between sets, so paddling out is easier, but the sets are meaty. This is for the experienced crew.
Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd are a bit more average as the wind goes cross-onshore, keeping the quality down, even though the swell sticks around the 6 ft to 8 ft range. The energy is still strong (1203 to 1653), but the wind is frustrating.
Then Friday 24th – get ready. A serious standout. Friday morning is glassy, with a 12 ft SSW groundswell at a very long 15-second period. The combined energy is massive (5488). This is expert territory. Over 8 ft and long period on a reef – only the best will handle this. The afternoon drops to 10 ft but still glassy and still huge. Saturday 25th morning stays glassy at 10 ft SW, 14-second period, still pumping (3028). These three days (24th to 25th) are the big wave highlight of the whole run.
Sunday 26th offers a welcome breather. Clean cross-off wind with 6 ft SW swell, 12-second period. This one is still good for experienced surfers, but much more manageable. Energy is moderate (1112).
Into the second week of the outlook, things get a bit more mixed. Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th see the wind picking up, though it stays cross-off. Swell stays solid at 7 ft to 8 ft with very long periods (15-16 seconds). Energy is strong (1553 to 2321), but the wind isn’t perfect. Crowds are possible at this spot, so on the cleaner days expect some company.
The end of the run, from about 31st July to 2nd August, shows another serious pulse. Friday 31st July morning kicks off a new swell – a 15 ft ESE swell at a shorter 10-second period, but with glassy surf. Energy is massive (3948). Saturday 1st August morning is a bit onshore, but the afternoon goes glassy with the same 15 ft ESE swell at 10 seconds and massive energy (5153). This is expert-only size. The absolute standout of the whole long-range window is Sunday 2nd August morning: a massive 15 ft E swell (11-second period) with clean cross-off wind and an astonishing 7196 energy reading. That is exceptional, but only for the die-hard, expert crew. The surf drops off fast into Monday 3rd August as the energy fades.
Overall, if you’re an expert, the week of 24th July and then the 31st July to 2nd August window are the ones to circle. For the intermediate crew, the 21st July morning and 26th July are your cleanest, most manageable windows.
Rusty.
