G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a good run of swell coming in for Fish Boma over the next couple of weeks, with some real standout sessions if you pick your windows right. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
The first real action kicks off on Saturday afternoon, July 4, with a solid 6ft swell out of the SE, a 12-second period, and glassy conditions. The combined swell energy is pumping at 1332 (moderate), and it’s an intermediate reef break that’s fairly consistent. This is one of the best windows early on—clean, offshore vibes, with that SE swell lining up nicely with the optimum S direction. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, but with conditions this good, it’s worth sharing the peak.
Sunday morning, July 5, drops a bit to 5ft from the ESE, still with a 12-second period and light cross-off wind. The energy’s down a notch at 897, but it’s clean and very good surf. Sunday afternoon turns onshore and marginal, so aim for the morning.
Monday, July 6, brings back a 6ft SSW swell in the morning, period hanging at 12 seconds, with cross-off winds and energy at 1113 (moderate). Another excellent call for intermediate surfers. The afternoon drops to 5ft and a slightly shorter period, but still clean.
Now, Tuesday July 7 morning is a bit messy with cross-on wind, but Tuesday afternoon turns glassy again with strong 6ft SW swell and energy at 1036. That’s another top pick for clean conditions.
Wednesday July 8 sees the swell push up to 7ft to 7ft, period lengthening to 13 seconds, but the cross-on wind makes it choppy. This is getting into expert territory size-wise, and the conditions are marginal.
Thursday July 9 morning is a standout: 10ft SSW swell, 14-second period, glassy wind, and energy roaring at 2975 (strong). This is big, powerful groundswell—only for experienced surfers. The 14-second period means long, well-shaped waves, but at a reef break like Fish Boma, that’s a recipe for proper barrels. The afternoon stays solid at 8ft but picks up a cross-shore breeze.
Friday July 10 morning holds 8ft SSW swell, 13 seconds, with clean cross-off winds and energy at 1929. Excellent again, but still big. The afternoon gets wind-affected.
Saturday July 11 drops to 7ft and then 6ft, with strong cross-off winds up to 30 km/h. The energy stays moderate to strong, but those winds are getting fresh. Still clean, but the breeze is noticeable.
Then we hit a flat patch. Sunday July 12 through Tuesday morning July 14 drops right off—swell sizes around 2ft to 6ft, poor to marginal conditions, and some rain. Tuesday July 14 morning has a glassy 2ft SW swell with 13-second period, but it’s tiny. From July 12 morning to July 16 afternoon, it’s mostly small, weak surf with energy readings under 700. A few glassy windows on July 14, 15, and 16 mornings, but the swell is under 3ft—only worth a paddle if you’re desperate.
Now here’s the late-blooming standout. Friday July 17 morning delivers a serious pulse: 10ft WSW swell, 10-second period, with light cross-off winds and energy at 3543 (strong). Friday afternoon goes even bigger—12ft SW, 13-second period, energy at 4225 (very strong). Clean conditions both windows. This is expert-only territory—massive, powerful swell at a reef. If you’ve got the skills and the nerve, this is the best surf of the whole 16-day run. But with that kind of size and period, it’ll be bending hard at the reef. Not for the faint-hearted.
Saturday July 18 drops to 8ft in the morning (marginal) but afternoon turns glassy with 6ft SW swell—another solid, clean option for intermediates.
Sunday July 19 finishes off with 4ft S swell, 10-second period, glassy in the morning—very good conditions but smaller, a nice way to ease out of the run.
Overall, the two true standouts are Thursday July 9 morning for that clean, long-period 10ft SSW groundswell, and Friday July 17 for the monster 12ft SW swell with clean winds. Both are for experts only, but that’s where the quality lives.
Rusty.
