The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Alright, we’ve got a solid run of surf on the way at Fish Boma, but it’s a tale of two halves. The first few days are a bit average, then the real quality kicks in and holds for a good stretch. The water temp is sitting right on 63°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off Wednesday, July 15, but honestly, it’s nothing to write home about. The morning is small and weak – 3ft from the east, short period, and a combined energy of only 481. It’s cross-shore and a bit messy. The afternoon picks up a bit to 7ft from the southwest, but that cross-onshore wind has it choppy and the energy jumps to 2193, but the quality is still poor. Thursday morning, July 16, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell drops a touch to 8ft from the southwest but with a solid 14-second period, and it’s glassy. The energy is pumping at 2706. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The glassy conditions hold into the afternoon with 8ft from the southwest and a period of 13 seconds. This is the first real standout window.
Friday, July 17, sees the swell drop back to around 7ft to 7ft from the southwest, but the wind is cross-shore and the period is still decent. The energy is moderate, but the quality is marginal. Saturday morning, July 18, is small and cross-on, not great. But the afternoon glass-off is a beauty – 6ft from the southwest, 13-second period, and glassy. That’s clean and fun. Sunday, July 19, is a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds and messy conditions. The swell is 8ft in the morning but the 15 km/h wind from the west-southwest chops it up. The energy is high at 2987, but it’s not for paddling.
Now, get ready. Tuesday, July 21, is the standout of the whole outlook. The morning is glassy, light wind from the east-southeast, and a massive 15ft from the south-southwest with a 14-second period. The combined energy is an enormous 7475. This is exceptional surf, but only for expert surfers – it’s big and powerful. The afternoon drops to 13ft, still solid, but the wind turns cross-shore so it’s a bit less clean. Wednesday, July 22, is blown out by a strong breeze, and Thursday, July 23, brings another massive day: 16ft from the south-southwest with a 15-second period and a combined energy of 10420. The wind is light cross-shore, so it’s clean but serious. This is big wave territory. The afternoon holds at 15ft with offshore wind, but it’s still for experts only.
After that, we settle into a long run of good, clean conditions. Friday, July 24, through to the end of the month, we see consistent southwest swell in the 5ft to 8ft range, with long periods often over 14 seconds. The standout days here are the mornings of July 24, 26, 27, 28, and 30 – all glassy or light offshore winds, with wave heights around 5ft to 7ft and period over 12 seconds. The energy is moderate to strong, ranging from 1279 to 2125. These are clean, fun waves for intermediate to experienced surfers. The last day, July 30, has a nice 6ft to 6ft from the southwest with a 15-second period and clean cross-offshore winds.
Overall, the best on offer is Tuesday, July 21 morning – that’s the big, glassy, groundswell session for the experts. For a more manageable but still excellent wave, the mornings of July 27 and July 28 with 5ft to 5ft glassy conditions are hard to beat. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so be ready for a few others in the water.
Rusty.
