The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks here at Fish Boma. We’ve got some serious size on the way, but we’ve got to sit through a bit of junky weather first.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, honestly. Saturday the 18th kicks off with weak, cross-onshore winds and a 4.6ft SW swell at 10 seconds. The energy is only moderate (723), and it’s messy. Don’t bother paddling out. Sunday the 19th gets a little bigger, 5.2ft and 8.2ft throughout the day, but the wind is onshore and fresh, gusting up to 18.6 mph, turning it into a churned-up mess. The swell energy climbs to 1297 by the afternoon, but it’s not surfable.
Monday the 20th is when things start to turn. The morning is pure glass, with a 5.9ft SW swell at 11 seconds. The energy is up to 1090, and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is a solid window. The afternoon swings offshore, but the swell drops to 3.9ft and shifts direction, so the morning is the pick.
Tuesday the 21st brings a jump in size and period. The morning has 5.6ft SSW swell at 14 seconds, with light cross-shore wind. The combined energy is strong at 1611. The afternoon is bigger, 7.9ft, with the same long period, and energy cranking up to 2403. But the wind is still cross-shore, so it’s not quite perfect.
Wednesday the 22nd is worth a look. The morning is cross-onshore again, but the afternoon turns glassy clean with a 5.9ft SW swell at 12 seconds. That’s a solid, clean 5.9ft – perfect for experienced crew. The energy is 1070, and it’s a standout for the week.
Thursday the 23rd is a mixed bag. The morning has 7.9ft SW swell with cross-shore wind, and the afternoon has 6.9ft with the same. The energy is moderate to strong (1483 and 1035), but the wind keeps it from being clean.
Now, Friday the 24th – this is a big one. We’re talking 11.5ft SSW swell in the morning, with a 15-second period. That’s very long period groundswell, and the energy is massive at 5017. This is expert territory only. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s a bit lumpy, but the power is undeniable. The afternoon stays big at 9.8ft, but the wind goes offshore, so it might clean up. This is for the brave only.
Saturday the 25th is a gem. The morning is glassy with an 8.2ft SSW swell at 13 seconds. The energy is strong at 2370, and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is a top-tier session if you’re solid.
Sunday the 26th is a nice, easy day. Glassy conditions all day, with a 4.3ft to 4.6ft SW swell. The energy is around 792 to 987. It’s clean, small, and fun – perfect for a longboard.
Monday the 27th is a write-off. The wind picks up to 12.4 mph from the west, creating a choppy, cross-onshore mess on a 5.9ft to 6.9ft SW swell. The energy is strong (1330 to 1676), but the quality is poor.
Tuesday the 28th is another standout. The morning is dead calm, glassy, with a 9.8ft SW swell at 12 seconds. The energy is 3525. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets bigger, 11.5ft, but the wind swings cross-shore, so stick to the morning.
Wednesday the 29th through the 31st sees a lot of rain and strong wind. The swell stays big, 8.2ft to 9.8ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it rough. The energy is high (2109 to 2902), but the quality is poor. Friday the 31st has a cross-offshore wind, so it might be cleaner, but it’s still a big, lumpy swell.
Then, we hit the big one. Saturday, August 1st, and Sunday, August 2nd. This is the real deal. Saturday morning is glassy with a 14.8ft ESE swell at 9 seconds. The energy is 4136. The afternoon is even bigger, 14.8ft at 10 seconds, with light cross-offshore wind and energy of 5018. This is exceptional for experts only. Sunday morning is the absolute peak – glassy, 13.1ft ESE swell at 12 seconds, with a staggering 7342 energy. This is a world-class session for the elite. The afternoon drops to 11.5ft with cross-shore wind, but the morning is the one.
The standout sessions: Wednesday the 22nd afternoon for a clean, glassy 5.9ft, and Saturday the 25th morning for a glassy, powerful 8.2ft. But the absolute best is Sunday, August 2nd morning – flat calm, perfect, and massive. That’s the one you wait for.
