The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the only game in town for the next 16 days, Dumps. It's a bit of a mixed bag, so let's get into it.

The surf kicks off Wednesday, July 15th, but it's a slow start. We've got a solid SW groundswell rolling in, with energy readings of 1342, but the morning is marred by a cross-on breeze making things a bit messy. The water is sitting at 56°, which is a solid 4° colder than usual for this time of year, so you'll want a good hood. By the afternoon, the swell jumps up to 8ft with a 16-second period, and the energy is pumping at 3436, but it's cross-shore and not really lining up. The first real standout comes Thursday morning, July 16th. The swell is still a meaty 8ft from the SW, but the wind goes glassy, dead calm. The energy is 2381, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the one to aim for if you've got the skills, as it's going to be too big for anyone without experience. The period is 13 seconds, a proper groundswell. Thursday afternoon gets a bit of cross-shore wind, knocking the quality down.

Friday morning, July 17th, is another good call. The swell drops to 6ft from the SW, but the wind is glassy again. The energy is 773, and it's expected to be very good. This is a much more manageable size. Friday afternoon gets messy with a cross-shore breeze. The weekend is a write-off. The wind swings around on Saturday and Sunday, with cross-onshore and onshore winds, keeping the surf average at best. Don't bother.

The first few days of the second week are pretty grim. Monday, July 20th, through Wednesday, July 23rd, is a total loss. The wind is howling from the north, and the swell gets out of control. On Tuesday, July 21st, we're looking at a massive 13ft swell with a 14-second period and energy at 6532, but it's blowing 30 km/h cross-onshore. Pure chaos, and honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The following days are just as bad, with the swell peaking at 16ft on the 22nd and 23rd. The wind is finally favorable, but the waves are way too big.

The light at the end of the tunnel comes on Friday, July 24th. The swell drops back to a manageable 6ft, and the wind is light. It's nothing special, but it's a start. The real magic returns on Saturday, July 25th. The morning is glassy, with an 8ft SW swell, a 14-second period, and energy at 2271. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The afternoon is clean with a cross-off breeze. This is your second standout window. The run continues through Sunday, July 26th, with a solid 6ft swell and very long 17-second period, making for some beautiful, clean lines. The energy is 2394. This run of clean, cross-off wind holds through Monday, July 27th, and into Tuesday, July 28th, with the swell holding around 6ft to 7ft and excellent conditions. The run ends on Wednesday, July 29th, with a glassy afternoon and a 6ft swell, but it's a bit more cross-shore in the morning.

So, the two absolute standouts are Thursday morning, July 16th, for the big, clean, glassy swell for the experts, and the entire run from Saturday, July 25th, through Tuesday, July 28th, for a stretch of clean, solid, and manageable surf. Don't waste your time on anything else.

Rusty.
