The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Well, it’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s a solid run of good surf coming through for Dumps. The water is running a chilly 56°, which is a solid 4° colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit, no two ways about it.
The first real window of opportunity hits on Sunday the 23rd of August. The swell is building from the WSW at 8ft, with a 13-second period, and the wind is light and cross-off from the SSE. That's a clean combo. The combined energy is a solid 1850 (moderate), and for experienced surfers, this is the standout. The swell is a touch over 5ft, so it's not for beginners, but it’s going to be good. The morning and afternoon are both looking excellent, with clean conditions and that same WSW energy.
Monday the 24th backs it up a bit, but the wind picks up in the afternoon, so the morning session is the call with a 6ft SSW swell, clean and cross-off. The energy drops to 934 (moderate), but it’s still a very good wave.
The next real standout is Tuesday the 25th. The swell jumps to 8ft from the SW, with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is 2141 (moderate). The wind is light and cross-off from the SSE. It’s an excellent session for experienced surfers, but the afternoon is a bit more marginal.
Wednesday the 26th is a nice little session for the morning, with a 4ft WSW swell and offshore wind from the ESE. The energy is 712 (moderate), and it’s very clean. A good one to get a few without the crowd hassle.
We’ve got a bit of a lull on Thursday the 27th, with poor conditions and small surf. But Friday the 28th is a real gem. The swell is 4ft from the WSW, with a 14-second period, and on Friday afternoon the wind goes glassy from the SSW. That’s about as clean as it gets, with a combined energy of 1056 (moderate). The morning is cross-off and clean too. This is a top pick for a glassy session.
Then it gets a bit wild. Saturday the 29th is a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. Sunday the 30th sees a massive 12ft WSW swell, with the combined energy hitting 4154 (strong). That’s too big for Dumps, and it’s really only for the brave and experienced. The wind is cross-off and clean, but the size is a serious factor.
The surf stays fun-sized through the start of September. Tuesday the 1st of September has a solid 7ft SW swell with a 14-second period and offshore wind from the east. That’s an excellent session for experienced surfers, with 1662 (moderate) energy. The afternoon has a bit of cross-on wind, so the morning is your window.
After that, the wind turns ugly from the 2nd of September onwards, with onshore conditions and choppy waves. The swell sticks around, but it’s not going to be clean. The run of poor conditions lasts through the 5th of September, with small, choppy surf.
The very best of the window is Sunday the 23rd of August through Tuesday the 25th, and then that glassy Friday afternoon on the 28th. Dumps is an inconsistent sandbar, and it’s a spot that can get crowded sometimes, so get on it when the conditions line up.
Rusty.
