Table - best surf conditions forecast for Dumps over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the only game in town for the next 16 days: Dumps. It’s a sandbar that’s inconsistent, so don’t get your hopes up for a non-stop session, but when it fires, it’s got some serious grunt.
We start off on Wednesday, July 8th, with a clean slate. The morning is dead flat calm with a glassy surface and a solid 7 ft SW swell rolling in. The combined energy is a hefty 2420, so there’s plenty of power. The water’s sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good wetsuit. This swell is too big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s excellent. The afternoon sees a shift to a cross-off breeze, but the swell holds.
Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th keep the energy pumping. Thursday morning bumps up to a 10 ft SSW swell (combined energy 2977), but the cross-off wind keeps it clean. Friday morning is another 10 ft SSW pulse, again with a clean cross-off. These are expert-only conditions at this size.
The weekend starts to ease off. Saturday the 11th is still a good size at 6 ft, with clean cross-off winds and a combined energy of 1129. Sunday the 12th sees the swell drop to 5 ft, and the wind goes glassy. It’s still a decent wave, but the energy is dropping to 714.
There’s a lull from Monday the 13th through to Tuesday the 14th. The swell shrinks to under 3 ft, and the energy drops below 300. It’s surfable but ordinary.
Then we get a messy spell. A strong onshore wind from the 15th to the 16th blows out the surf. There’s a nasty 12 ft SW swell on the 16th with a cross-on wind – that’s a kite surfer’s dream, not a paddle surfer’s. The combined energy hits 4293, but the conditions are poor.
Now, the real standout. After the storm passes, Friday the 17th of July delivers. The wind goes light offshore from the SE, and the swell is a solid 10 ft from the SW, with a period of 12 seconds and a combined energy of 2532. The morning is clean and excellent for experienced surfers. This is the best of the whole run.
The run continues into Saturday the 18th with another excellent morning, 8 ft from the SSW, clean and glassy.
The second week gets a bit ugly again. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are blown out with onshore winds and rain showers. Things settle again on Tuesday the 21st with a clean cross-off and a 6 ft SSW swell.
The final big highlight is Wednesday the 22nd of July. It’s a long-range call, so less certain, but the charts are showing a beautiful 10 ft SW groundswell with a very long period of 15 seconds. The wind is glassy, and the combined energy is a massive 3650. That is a proper, deep-water groundswell – perfect for a sandbar like Dumps, with long waits between sets but plenty of power. That’s the one to circle on the calendar.
So, the best of the bunch: grab the 17th of July for the offshore wind and solid size, and keep an eye on the 22nd of July for the potential clean groundswell. Crowds are possible here, so be early. Signing off, Rusty.
