The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here.
We’ve only got one spot to look at, Dumps. It’s an inconsistent sandbar break that needs a specific west swell to really light up. The water is sitting at 55.8°F right now, which is a solid 4.3°F colder than average for this time of year, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The window kicks off this Sunday, the 23rd of August. The morning will see a solid 7.5ft WSW swell riding on a 13-second period, with a light south cross-off breeze. The energy in the water is strong. Winds are clean, so the sandbar will have some well-shaped lines, but this is definitely only for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds similar conditions at 7.2ft.
Come Monday the 24th, there’s still clean surf on offer in the morning with 5.6ft of WSW swell. The energy drops to moderate, but the light cross-off wind keeps things tidy. The afternoon sees the tide or something start to mess with the quality a bit.
Tuesday the 25th is a standout. The morning pumps with a 7.9ft SW groundswell and a period of 14 seconds. This is a long-period swell, so Dumps should handle it well. The energy is very strong. The wind is cross-off but a bit breezier at 12 mph, so it won’t be glassy, but the power is undeniable. This is the best day of the first week.
Wednesday the 26th is a treat. The morning has a 4.3ft WSW swell but the wind goes offshore from the ESE at only 6 mph. That’s the call for cleanest conditions of the week.
From Thursday the 27th through the 30th of August, conditions deteriorate. Winds turn onshore and strengthen, with a few days showing poor surf quality. There’s a significant gap here with no worthwhile surf.
The next real highlight comes on Tuesday, the 1st of September. The morning delivers 9.8ft of pure SW groundswell, with very strong energy. The wind is light offshore from the southeast, so the waves will be clean and powerful. This is big, expert-only territory, and it’s the best swell of the entire outlook. The afternoon stays big but the wind shifts cross-off, still good, but not as pristine as the morning.
The window after that turns messy again. Strong onshore winds blow through until Saturday the 5th of September. The surf becomes unsurfable.
Finally, Sunday the 6th of September offers a brief window. The morning goes glassy, with a 5.6ft short-period WSW swell at 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak, but clean conditions are rare. The afternoon sees the swell jump to 8.2ft with a cross-off, but it’s marginal for this spot.
Monday the 7th of September finishes with a massive 11.5ft SW swell, but it’s predicted to just be too big for Dumps, with onshore winds to boot.
To sum it up: Sunday the 23rd morning is a great opener, Tuesday the 25th morning is the standout of the first week for power, and Tuesday the 1st of September morning is the absolute highlight of the whole 16 days if you’re an experienced surfer looking for a big, clean swell. Everything else is either small, windy, or just too big.
Stay safe out there.
