The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, lookin' at the next couple of weeks for Bloubergstrand. The water’s a bit nippier than usual for this time of year, sittin' at 57°, so grab a thicker wettie.
We're in for a slow start, but it doesn't stay quiet for long. There's a few days of clean but small surf to kick things off, then the real action kicks in after the first week. The first few days are more about easing into it. Friday the 17th morning has a glassy 6ft SW swell (773 energy units) – it's not huge, but that light wind and clean conditions will make it a fun session. Saturday the 18th looks even better for the longboard or a grovel board: both morning and afternoon are glassy, with a 5ft SW swell (639) and then a 3ft SW swell (631) in the arvo. That’s as good as it gets for a small-wave day.
Sunday the 19th morning has a 5ft SW groundswell (890) with a cross-off breeze, waves will be clean and lined up. Monday the 20th morning is dead flat calm, with a glassy 5ft SSW swell (648) – perfect for a peaceful paddle.
Now, the real standout is Tuesday the 21st morning. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. We’ve got a 6ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period (1257 energy units), and a light cross-off breeze. The water is clean, the sets will have some punch, and it’s not too big for a solid intermediate session.
The following week is where things get serious, and it’s only for the experienced crew. From Wednesday the 22nd onward, the swell explodes. Wednesday the 22nd morning has a 13ft WSW swell (5664 energy units) with a cross-shore wind – it’s big and a bit messy. The afternoon cleans up a touch with an 12ft WSW swell (4112) and a cross-off breeze, but it’s still a beast.
Thursday the 23rd is the absolute highlight of the entire run. Morning and afternoon both have an 12ft SW swell (4556 & 4577 energy units), with a light offshore in the morning turning glassy in the afternoon. This is world-class, big-wave territory for experts only. That swell direction is straight out of the SW, which is exactly what Bloubergstrand wants.
The surf stays big and powerful through the end of the month. Friday the 24th has an 12ft SW groundswell (4430) with a 15-second period, but it’s a bit cross-shore. Saturday the 25th morning has a huge 12ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period and a massive 6295 energy units – that’s a lot of ocean moving. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not totally clean, but the power is unreal.
The final few days, from the 28th to the 30th, are still offering solid 8ft to 8ft SW groundswells with glassy or light offshore conditions. Tuesday the 28th afternoon is a ripper, with a 8ft WSW groundswell (3433) and glassy conditions. The 29th is also a treat, with a 8ft SW groundswell (4368) and a 17-second period in the morning, turning glassy in the afternoon. That’s a dream run for the experienced crew.
So, to sum it up: the best of the best is Thursday the 23rd, with those 12ft glassy SW sets. The second standout is Tuesday the 21st morning, for a solid, clean session without the heavy-duty size. The big stuff from the 22nd to the 27th is for experts only, but the quality is there. The last few days of the month are a nice, slightly smaller, but still excellent finish.
Rusty.
