The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with the full run-down for Super Tubes.

First up, the water temp is sitting at 54°, which is a solid 12° colder than usual for this time of year. That’s far colder than normal, so you’ll want a thick hooded suit, maybe even booties, gloves, and a hood if you’re planning a long session.

We’ve got a serious run of swell coming our way. The wave energy is massive, with readings in the thousands (2483+) right from the start, so we’re talking strong to very strong energy. Keep in mind, this is a reef and point setup, so it handles that power well.

The standout period kicks off Tuesday afternoon (18th August). We’ve got a solid 10 ft SW groundswell, with a 13-second period, and clean glassy conditions thanks to a light offshore wind. The water’s cold, but the surf is prime for experienced surfers only. This is big, powerful, and perfect.

Wednesday morning (19th August) is another beauty. The swell holds at 10 ft from the SW, period still 13 seconds, and the wind is light offshore. It’s clean, it’s punchy, and it’s all about the experts.

The absolute best of the bunch though is Thursday morning (20th August). The swell jumps to 13 ft from the SW, with a long 14-second period, and the wind is light offshore. The energy is pumping at 5868, and it’s going to be huge, hollow, and perfect. This is the session to target if you’re an experienced charger. It’s going to be a standout.

Thursday afternoon (20th August) is still excellent, with 12 ft from the SW, 13 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore breeze. The wave energy is still massive at 4527.

Friday (21st August) sees a drop in quality. The swell drops to 8 ft and the wind turns cross-onshore, ruining the surface. It’s not worth it.

Saturday (22nd August) is a tricky one. The swell is 10 ft, but the wind is a strong 25 mph offshore. While it’s clean, it’s going to be incredibly hard to paddle into and hold your ground. Only for the fittest and strongest.

Sunday (23rd August) is back on. Morning has 12 ft SW at 12 seconds with a moderate offshore, and the afternoon has 10 ft SW with a light cross-offshore. Both are clean and excellent.

Monday (24th August) is a solid day. The morning has 8 ft with a light offshore, and the afternoon has 5 ft with a clean cross-offshore. Both are very good.

Tuesday (25th August) is a write-off. Onshore winds and choppy conditions ruin things.

Wednesday (26th August) is a pleasant surprise. Morning has 6 ft with glassy conditions, and the afternoon has 5 ft, also glassy. Both are clean and excellent. A nice mellow day.

Thursday (27th August) is good. The morning has 4 ft with a moderate offshore, clean. The afternoon sees the swell pick up to 6 ft with a gentle offshore – very good.

Friday (28th August) is a smaller day. The morning has 5 ft from the SSE with a moderate offshore, and the afternoon has 5 ft from the SSE with a clean cross-offshore. Both are good.

After that, the run ends. Saturday (29th August) through to Tuesday morning (1st September) is mostly poor or marginal, with onshore winds and chop. The swell direction changes a bit, but the wind is the enemy.

Then, Wednesday morning (2nd September) gives us a final chance. 7 ft from the SW, 13 seconds, with a moderate offshore wind, clean and excellent. A good way to wrap up the run.

So, the clear standouts are the Thursday morning (20th August) for the biggest, most powerful swell, and the Tuesday afternoon (18th August) and Wednesday morning (19th August) for the first big, clean pulses. Expect crowds at Super Tubes, it’s often busy.

Rusty, signing off.
