The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way for Super Tubes, so let’s get into it.
We’re kicking off Thursday the 16th with some solid 8ft SW groundswell, and the water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is cranking at 2474, which is strong, and with a light cross-off breeze, it’s going to be clean. This is proper advanced stuff, so don’t kid yourself.
Friday the 17th builds a touch more in the morning, with 10ft SW swell, a 12-second period, and offshore WSW wind. That’s about as good as it gets for a morning session. The afternoon drops back to 8ft with a slight cross-off, still clean.
Saturday the 18th sees a bit of a drop in size, but the morning has 5ft SW with a 10-second period and glassy offshore wind. The afternoon picks up to 6ft, still clean with a light cross-off. Easy paddling, quality waves.
Sunday the 19th is a mixed bag. The morning is small at 3ft but with a 12-second groundswell and light offshore wind – clean and fun for a longboard. The afternoon gets a bit messy with 8ft but short-period, 8-second wind swell, and a moderate offshore breeze. It’ll be lumpy, but still rideable.
Monday the 20th is a standout morning. 8ft SW groundswell with an 11-second period, light offshore wind, and combined energy of 2014. Clean, powerful, and consistent. The afternoon gets a light cross-shore, so it’s less ideal.
Tuesday the 21st is a special morning. 6ft SSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period and glassy conditions. That’s a dream combo for a reef setup like this. Paddling out will be easy between sets, and the waves will have serious shape. The afternoon picks up to 7ft but with a light cross-on, so morning is the call.
Now, looking ahead to the second week, things get serious. Wednesday the 22nd is the big one. The morning hits 18ft SW with a 12-second period and combined energy of 16020. That’s massive. The afternoon is 16ft SW, 13-second period, and clean. This is expert-only territory. Don’t even think about it if you’re not solid.
Thursday the 23rd still has 15ft SW in the morning with light offshore wind and clean conditions. The afternoon gets a cross-shore, so it’s a bit trickier.
Friday the 24th is another cracker morning. 13ft SW with a very long 16-second period and offshore wind. The combined energy is 7475. This is deep, powerful groundswell. The afternoon drops to 12ft but stays clean.
Saturday the 25th is arguably the best of the run. 13ft SW with an 18-second period – that’s about as long as it gets – and glassy conditions in the morning. Combined energy of 10700. This is the kind of day that makes you cancel all your plans. Absolute perfection for experienced surfers.
Sunday the 26th through to the end of the month sees the swell slowly dropping, but still plenty of good waves. The morning of the 26th is 12ft SSW with a 15-second period and a clean cross-off in the afternoon. Monday the 27th has 8ft SSW with a 14-second period and clean conditions in the morning, though the afternoon turns choppy. Tuesday the 28th is another clean morning with 7ft SW and a 16-second period.
Wednesday the 29th brings another pulse of 10ft SSW with a 19-second period in the morning – exceptional for experts. The afternoon is 12ft but with a cross-shore.
By Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st, the swell is fading and the wind turns more cross-shore, so conditions get messier. The last few days are small and not worth the paddle.
Overall, the standout sessions are the mornings of the 21st, 22nd, 24th, and 25th – those are the ones to circle on the calendar. Crowds are likely here, especially on the best days, but with this much swell, the lineup will spread out.
Rusty.
