The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
The immediate outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a solid swell window coming up, but the winds are going to be the key to unlocking the good stuff. The water is running at a very unusual 57°F, which is a full 9° colder than what we'd normally expect this time of year – so you're gonna want a thick rubber, no two ways about it.
The standout spot, and really the only game in town, is Super Tubes. This is an advanced reef and point break that's very consistent. It's going to be on the gnarliest side of things, so this isn't for the faint of heart.
Let's break it down. This Friday (21st August) is a write-off. The morning is crossed-up and the afternoon is a choppy mess. Saturday the 22nd morning is clean with strong offshore wind from the WSW, but that 8ft SW swell is going to be a battle to get into. The afternoon cleans up a bit with 6ft SSW swell, but it's still only marginal.
Sunday the 23rd is the first real standout. The morning is superb. We’re looking at a clean 8ft SW swell with a gentle offshore wind from the southwest. The wave energy is strong, and it's going to be clean and hollow. The afternoon holds up just as well with a clean 8ft SW swell. This is the best bet for the first week.
Monday the 24th is still good, with clean 7ft SW swell in the morning. Tuesday the 25th sees a jump in size and power. The morning brings a 10ft SW swell with a very long 14-second period. The combined energy is very strong. The wind is light and cross-off, so it will be clean. This is a big, powerful groundswell that will be firing down the point, but it's strictly for experts.
Then we hit a rough patch. Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are blown out with onshore winds. Friday the 28th morning is a bit of a tease – glassy conditions but only 5ft of S swell. The weekend of the 29th and 30th is wonky. Saturday morning is poor, but the afternoon cleans up with a 10ft SW swell. Then, Sunday the 30th is a monster. The morning has a massive 18ft SW swell with a very strong offshore wind. The combined energy is off the charts. This is a massive, powerful, and dangerous swell. The afternoon is a slightly smaller 15ft, but still only for the most experienced. This is a true big-wave day.
The start of September is messy again with onshore winds, but then Wednesday 2nd September is another beauty. The morning is glassy with a 8ft SW swell and a long 14-second period. The combined energy is strong. Perfect conditions.
The following weekend (4th-5th September) looks excellent. Friday the 4th has clean 10ft SW swell both morning and afternoon. Saturday the 5th is the true standout of the second week. The morning has a clean 8ft SW swell, and the afternoon is an absolute dream: 10ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period, light cross-off wind, and immense energy. That's a world-class point-break day.
To wrap it up, the two true standouts are Sunday the 23rd of August for a solid, clean, and powerful swell, and Saturday the 5th of September for what looks like a perfect, long-period groundswell.
Rusty.
