The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up.
We’ve got a solid run of surf on the horizon, starting this Wednesday afternoon. The first few days are looking good, but the real standout is a stretch of pumping, groundswell-driven waves that’ll get the blood pumping. Let’s get into it.
The first surf worth paddling out for kicks off on Wednesday, July 15th, in the afternoon. Super Tubes is a reef and point break that’s very consistent and fairly exposed. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so maybe pack an extra layer. We’ve got a 7 ft SW swell rolling in with a moderate offshore breeze from the W, making for clean conditions. The combined swell energy is moderate at 962, so there’s enough push to get you into some fun ones. It’s a solid start.
Then Thursday, July 16th, is where it starts to get serious. The morning session is a beauty – glassy conditions with a 10 ft SW groundswell (14-second period). The energy jumps to 3095, which is a big step up. This is excellent surf, but at 10 ft, it’s sitting in the expert-only zone. Thursday afternoon stays clean with a 8 ft SW swell and a light cross-offshore breeze. Friday morning, July 17th, is also glassy with a 8 ft WSW swell (12-second period). The energy is 1977, and it’s clean. Friday afternoon gets a bit sketchy with a light cross-onshore breeze, so the morning is the window.
Saturday, July 18th, drops off a bit. Swell backs down to 3 ft to 4 ft from the S, but the wind is offshore, so it’s still ridable. The energy is down to 434-643, so it’s weaker but clean.
Now, Sunday, July 19th, brings the juice back. Morning session has a 10 ft SW swell with a moderate offshore wind – clean, powerful, and for the experienced crew. The energy is 1748. Sunday afternoon is still solid with a 8 ft SW swell.
Monday, July 20th, is a good day to be in the water. Clean offshore winds all day with a 6 ft to 7 ft SW swell. The energy is moderate (764-1039), and it’s very good surf.
Tuesday, July 21st, is a tricky one. The swell jumps to a massive 13 ft from the SW with a long 14-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The energy is massive at 6397, but the quality is questionable. This is more of a mission for the brave or the kite surfers.
The big standout. Wednesday, July 22nd, through Thursday, July 23rd, is the absolute peak. Wednesday afternoon sees a 18 ft SW swell with a 14-second period and a fresh offshore breeze. The energy is 11613 – that’s very strong. This is for experts only. But Thursday, July 23rd, is the crown jewel. Morning is glassy, 16 ft SW swell, 15-second period, and energy hitting 11378. This is exceptional, world-class surf for the experienced. The afternoon stays clean with a 15 ft SW swell. If you can handle it, this is the best on offer.
The end of July and into the 30th sees a consistent run of 8 ft to 12 ft SW swells, often with offshore winds. The long-period groundswells (14-15 seconds) will be best at this reef and point setup, as they can close out beach breaks. Winds are mostly offshore or clean, keeping the surfaces good. Be aware that crowds are “often” at Super Tubes, so get there early, especially for the peak days.
The 24th of July has strong winds (31 mph), making it hard to paddle, so avoid that. The 25th has cross-onshore winds, so look for shelter. From the 26th onward, it’s a solid run of clean, powerful surf.
In summary: the first few days are good, but the window from Wednesday, July 22nd, to Thursday, July 23rd, is the absolute standout – massive, clean, groundswell for the experts. The last week of July into early August has a consistent, strong pulse of swell with good conditions. This is a great run for the crew that can handle it.
Rusty.
