The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what we’ve got coming down the pipe for Super Tubes. This is a reef and point break that’s very consistent and handles a solid SW swell. The water is currently 57°F, which is far colder than usual for this time of year – 9°F below average, so you’ll want the thickest wetsuit you own.
We’ve got a bit of a wait for the real magic, but hang in there because the second half of this run looks absolutely pumping. The first few days are compromised by wind or tide, but from Sunday the 23rd onward, things start to click.
Friday afternoon (21st) is a write-off with a messy 7ft cross-onshore. Saturday the 22nd sees the swell building, but the wind is howling offshore at 25 mph in the morning – it’s clean but near-impossible to paddle into. The afternoon eases a touch to 19 mph offshore with a solid 10ft SW swell, but that’s still a handful.
Sunday morning the 23rd is where it gets good. Clean, gentle offshore breeze from the WSW at 9 mph, a nice 8ft SW groundswell (11-second period) – this is prime for the point. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off and 7ft swell. Monday the 24th keeps the momentum: light offshore winds, 7ft SW swell in the morning, and a moderate offshore in the afternoon. Clean waves, no complaints.
Now, Tuesday the 25th is a standout. Glassy conditions, a very long-period 14-second SW groundswell pumping in at 10ft. That’s strong, deep water energy – perfect for a reef setup like Super Tubes. This is expert territory and it’s going to be absolutely firing. Keep an eye on the afternoon as it goes a bit cross, so hit the morning.
We hit a bit of a rough patch Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th with onshore winds and a shift to a longer-period S swell. Thursday afternoon (27th) does glass off nicely though with a 6ft S swell (15-second period) – very clean for the more sheltered parts of the break.
Friday the 28th drops a notch in size (5ft) but is glassy in the morning, offering a nice, more manageable session. After that, the weekend of the 29th and 30th gets wild. Saturday is a cross-shore mess, but Sunday the 30th blows up: a massive 18ft WSW swell with a near-gale offshore wind at 31 mph. That is dangerous, expert-only, and potentially more interesting for kite surfers than paddle-in surfing.
Monday the 1st of September brings redemption: glassy conditions with a 10ft SW groundswell. Another epic morning for the experienced crew. The first week of September (2nd-3rd) holds clean, moderate 6-8ft SW swells with light winds – very good, consistent surfing.
The final few days (4th-5th of September) fade out with poor wind and dropping swell, so the real window is from the 23rd of August through to the 3rd of September. The absolute pick is Tuesday the 25th of August morning for size, power, and glassy conditions, but Sunday the 23rd kicks off a long stretch of clean, quality waves.
Rusty.
