The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a monster stretch coming up for Super Tubes. This is a reef and point set-up that holds a hell of a lot of power, and it’s not messing around.
The water is sitting at 58°F, which is a whopping 8°F colder than normal for this time of year. That’s a serious anomaly. You’ll want a good hood and gloves; that is not your average August water temp.
We kick things off on Sunday, August 23rd with solid 8ft swell from the SW, 11-second period, and the combined energy is pumping at 1514 (moderate to strong). Morning winds are light offshore from the WSW, so that reef will be clean and grinding. Sunday afternoon holds similar size at 8ft with a cross-off breeze. This is excellent, heavy surf built for advanced guys only.
Monday the 24th starts with 7ft from the SW, and it cleans up nicely on Tuesday. Tuesday morning, August 25th, is a standout: 8ft SW swell with a 13-second period, light cross-off breeze, and the energy jumps to 3345. The afternoon bumps to 10ft and a 15-second period, but the wind picks up a touch. Still, that’s some serious groundswell marching in.
Wednesday the 26th goes to crap. Onshore easterly winds up to 22 mph ruin the setup. Swell is still big at 10ft, but it’s a messy, blown-out mess. Skip it.
Thursday the 27th morning brings redemption. Glassy conditions with a light NNW breeze, 7ft from the SSW, and moderate energy at 1375. That’s your best bet for clean, manageable size for experienced surfers. Gorgeous.
Friday the 28th is a mixed bag. Morning is glassy with a small 5ft S swell, but afternoon onshore winds kill it. Saturday the 29th is a write-off with lumpy cross-shore winds.
Now Sunday the 30th gets interesting again. The morning serves up a chunky 12ft from the WSW, 9-second period, with a light cross-off breeze. That’s a big, steep, powerful wave. The afternoon brings 25 mph offshore winds, which is clean but a battle to paddle into.
Monday the 31st is glassy, dead calm, with a massive 12ft swell from the SW and energy of 3501. That’s a standout morning for experts. Tuesday September 1st holds 8ft with a gentle offshore breeze.
Then things go nuclear. From September 3rd into the 7th, Super Tubes gets absolutely hammered with enormous swell. Thursday the 3rd afternoon is already 18ft from the SW with a 14-second period and energy hitting 12092 – that’s very strong. Friday the 4th morning peaks at a crazy 26ft SW swell, 16-second period, with energy over 30000. That is a massive, dangerous groundswell. Only for the absolute elite.
Saturday the 5th morning drops slightly to 20ft from the SSW, but with clean side-offshore winds, the sets will be epic but terrifying. Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th continue with 15 to 21ft, all clean and powerful. This is a two-week block for serious chargers.
The absolute standout of the whole run? I’d call Monday morning August 31st for that glassy 12ft SW swell – perfect conditions, no wind, just you and the ocean. For raw, heavy power, Saturday morning September 5th at 20ft with clean winds is a trip.
One warning: The crowds here can be likely, so get in early.
Rusty, signing off.
