Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks. We’re focusing on one spot, and it’s a proper one.
For the first week, we’ve got a solid run of surf on the cards. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a fair bit cooler than usual for this time of year - a solid 3° chill, so you’ll be wanting a decent wetsuit.
Kicking off on Saturday, the 4th of July, the swell is already up. It’s a touch tricky with a cross-off wind in the morning, but the waves are a clean 7ft with 12-second intervals from the SE, and the energy is strong (1701). This is excellent for experienced surfers. By the afternoon the wind swings, making things a bit more marginal.
Sunday the 5th is a transition day. The swell drops right off, but the afternoon goes glassy with a long-period 3ft groundswell from the SW. It won't be big, but it'll be pretty.
Now, the real talk starts Monday the 6th. The swell builds back up to 6ft from the SW with a clean 12-second period. The morning is dead glass, which is a massive plus. It’s a very good session, with moderate wave energy (915).
Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th are where things get serious. Tuesday has clean offshore wind all day, hitting a consistent 7ft from the SW (energy around 1280-1300). Wednesday cranks it up to 8ft with the same strong offshore wind, and the energy jumps to very strong (over 2400). The afternoon of Wednesday the 8th is where the magic happens for the crew that’s charging.
The standout window is Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th. On Thursday morning, the swell maxes out at 10ft from the SSW with a long 14-second period and glassy conditions. The combined energy is immense at 3940. This is big, powerful surf for experts only. Friday morning is a repeat with similar conditions and energy (2938). This is the best of the best on offer.
However, Saturday the 11th is a write-off. Strong winds right onshore ruin the shape completely, and the swell drops.
We then hit a lull. Sunday the 12th offers some small, clean waves in the afternoon, and then from Monday the 13th through to Saturday the 18th morning, it’s a real mixed bag of weak, small or poorly wind-affected surf with low energy values, mostly under 700. There are a few windows of offshore wind on small waves, but nothing to get excited about.
The light at the end of the tunnel is Saturday afternoon the 18th. A fresh pulse of 5ft swell from the SW with a long 14-second period hits, and the wind goes clean offshore. The energy jumps back up to a strong 1052. This looks like a very good session. Sunday the 19th backs it up with similar, slightly smaller clean surf as the swell starts to fade again.
Stay safe, wait for the sets on those big days, and get amongst the glassy morning slots.
Rusty.
