The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up at Super Tubes, a reef and point setup that’s very consistent and handles a good SW swell. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so maybe grab an extra millimetre of rubber.

The action kicks off this Sunday the 19th. Morning has some clouds with a light WSW breeze keeping things offshore, delivering 5ft of SW swell with a 9-second period. The combined energy is moderate (873). It’s clean but not the big stuff. By the afternoon, the wind picks up to 16 mph from the SW, still offshore, and the swell bumps to 6ft with more energy (1112). It’s surfable but a bit raw.

Monday the 20th is where it starts to get serious. The morning is clear, wind swings light from the W, and the swell jumps to 7ft from the WSW at 10 seconds. Energy is solid (1480). This is proper head-high, clean, and for experienced surfers only. The afternoon holds at 6ft with a cross-off breeze, still very good.

Tuesday the 21st, morning is the standout. Clear skies, dead calm, glassy as a mirror. Swell is 6ft from the SW with a very long 15-second period – that’s groundswell with heaps of push. Energy is strong (1396). This is a point break, so that long period will wrap in beautifully. This is the best on offer. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a 8ft SSW swell and cross-on wind; that’s big and choppy, more for the experts.

Wednesday the 22nd, another glassy morning with 7ft of SW swell at 12 seconds. Clean, powerful, and the energy is strong (1474). The afternoon sees offshore wind again at 16 mph, but the swell holds at 8ft. It’s clean but windy.

Thursday the 23rd keeps the offshore wind all day, with the swell building from 8ft in the morning to 10ft in the afternoon. That afternoon pulse is big and powerful (2127), and with the wind clean, it’s a serious session for the experienced crew.

Now, Friday the 24th is the next real standout. The morning is a touch crossed-up with a 13ft monster from the SSW at 16 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell, and the energy is extreme (7616). The wind is light and cross, so not perfect, but that size and period at a reef and point is a dream. The afternoon cleans right up with a light cross-off breeze and 12ft of the same solid groundswell. This is the biggest and best of the whole run.

Saturday the 25th is still pumping, with 10ft of SW swell all day, clean wind, and energy over 3000. Sunday the 26th drops back to 6ft, but the wind turns onshore, so it’s a write-off.

Monday the 27th wakes up with offshore wind and a 5ft SSW groundswell at 17 seconds – very long period, very clean, and energy is strong (2084). The afternoon stays clean with a cross-off and 8ft. Then Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are a complete mess with strong onshore winds over 19 mph and 8ft+ swell – that’s blown-out, ugly, and not worth paddling out for.

Thursday the 30th is a mix of cross-shore wind and 4ft to 7ft swell, marginal. Friday the 31st morning has a glassy 5ft SSW swell with 12-second period, clean and fun. The afternoon gets onshore again.

Into August, Saturday the 1st has a glassy afternoon with 6ft from the SSE at 12 seconds – clean and fun. Sunday the 2nd drops right off to 3ft and 2ft – tiny, but clean. Monday the 3rd holds 3ft with glassy conditions and offshore wind.

Overall, the best surf is Tuesday the 21st morning for that glassy, long-period groundswell, and Friday the 24th for the absolute biggest, cleanest swell of the run. If you’re only picking one, make it Friday the 24th afternoon – it’s a session you’ll remember.

Rusty.
