The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way for Super Tubes, a classic reef and point setup that loves a good SW groundswell. The water is sitting at 55.4°, which is a whopping 10.6° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s brutally cold, so suit up properly.
The first real action kicks off Thursday, August 20th. It’s a bit of a late start, but when it hits, it hits hard. Thursday morning pumps with a clean 13.1ft SSW swell, a 14-second period, and a gentle offshore wind from the WSW. That’s a massive amount of energy in the water (6035), and it’s going to be a freight train. This is strictly for the advanced crew. The wind holds steady offshore through the afternoon as the swell backs off slightly to 11.5ft from the SW, still packing plenty of punch.
Friday the 21st is a write-off. The morning is messy with onshore wind, and the afternoon gets ugly with a strong cross-on shore breeze. Skip it.
Saturday the 22nd is a weird one. The morning has a strong offshore wind, almost 25 mph, pushing into a 7.5ft SW swell. It’s clean, but that wind is so strong it’ll be a battle to get out. The afternoon eases a bit with a fresh offshore breeze, but it’s still a struggle.
Sunday the 23rd is the standout of the first week. The morning is glassy – dead calm wind, a clean 8.2ft SW swell at 11 seconds. This is where Super Tubes will be at its best. The energy is still strong (1585), and with no wind, it’s going to be a ripper of a session. The afternoon gets a little lumpy with a light cross-on breeze, so get it early.
Monday the 24th is clean all day, with the swell dropping a touch to 6.9ft in the morning and 6.2ft in the afternoon. Good, fun waves, but not the standout.
Tuesday the 25th is a no-go. Onshore wind and a long 16-second period swell with a big easterly breeze will make it bumpy and hard to read.
From Wednesday the 26th, the swell drops off. We get a few clean mornings from the 27th through the 29th with waist-to-chest high waves, but the energy is low. The morning of Saturday the 29th is a nice little blip: a clean 5.2ft SW swell with a moderate offshore, but it’s not the size of the earlier days.
Then we get a messy spell. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st are both blown out by strong easterly winds, but keep an eye on Monday afternoon the 31st. The wind swings back offshore, the swell picks up to 7.2ft from the SSW, and it’s clean. That’s a solid session.
The first few days of September look promising. Tuesday the 1st is a no-go due to insane offshore wind, but Wednesday the 2nd is a gem. You’ve got a glassy morning with a 7.5ft SW swell at a very long 15 seconds. That’s groundswell royalty, and it will be peeling perfectly down the reef. The afternoon goes glassy with a 9.8ft SW swell – absolute perfection for the experts.
Thursday the 3rd is a bit of a tease. A huge 13.1ft SW swell rolls in, but it’s paired with a light cross-on breeze. It’s still massive, but the wind will keep it from being perfect. The real magic returns on Friday the 4th: a clean 8.2ft SW swell in the morning, and a 9.8ft SW swell in the afternoon with a moderate offshore. That’s a classic, powerful day at Super Tubes.
Overall, the standouts are Sunday the 23rd morning for that glassy perfection, and Wednesday the 2nd of September for the long-period groundswell and glassy conditions. Get on it.
