The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at the forecast for Super Tubes. We’ve got a run of swell coming our way, but it’s a mixed bag with a fair bit of wind to navigate. The water is running at about 56° right now, which is a whopping 10° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a seriously unusual chill, so you’ll want a good 5/4 to handle it.

We start off this Saturday the 22nd with a solid 8ft SW swell, but the wind is howling from the WSW at 28 mph. It’s offshore, so the face will be clean, but that strong breeze is going to make it a real fight just to get out the back. The wave energy is strong at 1708, but it’s not a fun paddle. It cleans up a bit by the afternoon as the wind drops to 19 mph, still a clean 6ft, but the conditions are still pretty marginal.

Sunday the 23rd is where it really starts to turn on. Glassy conditions in the morning with a slight air, and a punchy 8ft SW swell. That’s a proper wave for experienced surfers only. The afternoon holds with a light cross-off breeze, still clean, and 7ft waves. This is a good day.

Monday the 24th is still clean with light cross-off winds and 7ft of SW groundswell. The period is a nice 12 seconds, meaning good energy and shape. The energy is moderate to strong at 1099. It’s a good option, but it’s not quite the standout.

Now, Tuesday the 25th is a major highlight. The morning is glassy, dead calm, with a 10ft SW swell and a 14-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell hitting a reef and point setup, which is a dream combo. The wave energy is very strong at 3139. This is the best of the first week – an excellent window for advanced surfers to score some bombs.

Wednesday the 26th goes to crap. Strong onshore winds and lumpy seas. You can ignore it.

Thursday the 27th is messy with onshore wind and a dropping swell. Friday the 28th shows a brief window of hope: glassy in the morning with a clean 5ft S swell, but the energy is weak at 717. Saturday the 29th is a write-off with messy winds.

Then, Sunday the 30th, we get another pulse. A big 12ft WSW swell rolls in with clean cross-off winds in the morning. The period is a shorter 10 seconds, so it’ll be a bit jumbled, but the size is serious. This is for experienced crew only.

The run from Monday the 31st through Thursday the 3rd of September is a bit of a mixed bag with decent size (8ft to 10ft) but often tricky winds or onshore conditions. The energy is consistently strong though.

But hold onto your board, because Friday the 4th of September is the true standout of the entire 16-day window. We’re looking at a massive 16ft to 18ft WSW and SW swell with incredible wave energy of 9704 to 10950. The wind is gentle offshore or light cross-off, making for clean, giant walls. This is exceptional, expert-only surf. It’s over two weeks out, so keep an eye on it, but if this holds, it’ll be a day to remember.

Saturday the 5th looks to get messy with strong onshore winds in the afternoon, spoiling the big 15ft morning swell. Sunday the 6th cleans up again with a solid 8ft groundswell and light cross-off winds to close out the period.

So, to boil it down: For the next week, Tuesday the 25th is your best bet for clean, thumping groundswell. For the long-range, circle Friday the 4th of September on your calendar – it’s got the potential to be an absolute monster.

Rusty.
