The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next couple of weeks are all about one spot: Super Tubes. This is a reef and point set-up that’s very consistent, and it’s going to be working for a good chunk of the forecast. The water’s sitting at 54.3°F, which is a full 11.5°F colder than usual for this time of year. That’s not just a little chilly, that’s properly cold, so you’ll want the thickest hood and boots you own. It’s advanced territory out there too, and with the size on the way, this isn’t one for the faint-hearted.
We kick things off on Wednesday the 19th. First light has a clean 9.8ft SW swell rolling in at 13 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze. The energy reading is strong at 2536, and it’s looking excellent for those who know what they’re doing. The afternoon eases back a touch to 8.2ft, but the wind swings offshore and it stays clean, with energy at 2148. Solid start.
Thursday the 20th is where things start to get serious. The morning sees the swell jump to 13.1ft from the SW, period out to 14 seconds, and a gentle offshore wind. The energy meter is pumping hard at 5389, and the surf is rated excellent. This is a standout window, no question. The afternoon is still pumping at 11.5ft with clean conditions and energy at 4596. If you’re experienced, this is your day.
Friday the 21st is a letdown. The swell drops, but the wind turns cross-onshore and picks up. Morning is marginal at 7.9ft with light cross-onshore ripples, but the afternoon turns poor and choppy with 25 km/h winds. Save your energy.
Saturday the 22nd is all over the shop. The morning is howling offshore at 40 km/h, making it clean but nearly impossible to get into. The swell is 5.2ft. The afternoon settles to a fresh offshore at 30 km/h, with a short-period 8.2ft swell at 8 seconds, which is going to be crumbly and hard to ride. Not the best.
Sunday the 23rd brings back the goods. Morning is 11.5ft of clean SW swell with a gentle offshore breeze, energy at 3471. The afternoon holds at 11.5ft but the wind turns light cross-off, making it even better. Energy is up at 4488. This is another proper standout. Monday the 24th stays fun—morning has 7.5ft clean surf, and the afternoon drops to 4.3ft but with a long 16-second period and light winds. Nice relaxed session if you want a break from the big stuff.
Tuesday the 25th turns poor again with cross-onshore winds and chop. Morning is marginal, afternoon is a write-off. Wednesday the 26th is similar—light cross-onshore winds and messy conditions, with the swell dropping to around 6.6ft. Not worth the paddle.
Thursday the 27th is small. Morning has 4.3ft with a moderate offshore wind, but it’s weak, with energy down near 878. Afternoon goes onshore. Friday the 28th sees the swell rebuild a touch. The morning is fresh offshore but small at 4.6ft. The afternoon, however, is where it’s at: 6.6ft of SSW swell, moderate offshore wind, and clean conditions, with energy at 2353. Saturday the 29th is another solid one—moderate offshore winds all day with the afternoon pushing 8.2ft of SW swell at 14 seconds and energy at 2453. Good, clean, and consistent.
Sunday the 30th turns ugly. Rain showers and strong cross-onshore winds, combined with chop, make it a kitesurfing day more than a surfing one. The swell is still there, but it’s messy. Monday the 31st is worse—onshore winds at 30-35 km/h and poor conditions, despite an 8.2ft long-period swell. Give it a miss.
Then we get a bit of a breather. Tuesday the 1st of September starts the new month with a glassy morning, 7.2ft of SW swell at 14 seconds, and energy at 1929. It looks excellent, but it’s still a week and a half out, so treat it as a promising call rather than a guarantee. The afternoon gets a light cross-onshore ripple, so get in early. Wednesday the 2nd has clean, cross-off winds with 6.6ft surf—nice and fun.
But the real event is brewing for Thursday the 3rd of September. This is the big one. The swell is forecast to be a massive 18ft from the WSW, with a 12-second period and moderate offshore winds. The energy readings are through the roof at 9816 for the morning and 10613 for the afternoon. This is exceptional, expert-only surf. If it lines up, this will be the session of the month, no doubt. Keep an eye on it, because this far out, things can change, but the signs are all there.
