The Lowdown
Right, mate, let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards. The whole forecast is about one spot: Super Tubes. It’s a reef and point break that’s very consistent and handles a fair bit of swell, so we’re in for a bit of a ride over the next sixteen days.
The water temperature here is a massive 42°F colder than usual for this time of year, sitting at 55°F. That’s seriously unusual, so don’t forget a thick steamer.
The first real standout is Thursday morning, the 20th of August. The swell is a solid 13ft from the SW with a period of 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy is massive (5705), and with a gentle offshore wind from the WSW, it’s going to be clean and powerful. This is only for experienced surfers, mind. Anything over 8ft, and the beginners should stay on the beach. The long period means it’ll be a bit more lined up at a point break like this, with longer waits between sets.
Wednesday the 19th has a 10ft SW swell, with glassy conditions in the morning. The energy is high (2660), and it’s clean, but the wind is light. It’s a good session, but Thursday morning is the one that really stands out as the best of the first week.
The swell drops a bit over the weekend, but there’s still some fun waves. Sunday morning, the 23rd, has a 8ft SW swell with clean conditions and a cross-offshore breeze. It’s a solid option if you don’t want the size of Thursday.
The second week gets a bit more mixed. There’s a noticeable gap in quality from the 25th through the 29th of August, with a lot of cross-on winds and choppy conditions. Monday morning, the 31st of August, is worth a mention. It’s a 6ft SW swell, but with a 14-second period and a moderate offshore wind, it’s clean and has some punch. The energy is solid (1514). It’s a good call for a more relaxed session.
The 1st of September morning will be tricky with a strong 22 mph offshore wind – it’ll be clean, but hard to paddle into. The afternoon is better with a moderate offshore. The 2nd of September looks clean again, but the swell is dropping right down.
The very end of the forecast, the 3rd of September, is a write-off with onshore winds and poor conditions.
So, for the best surf, get out there on Thursday morning, the 20th of August, for the biggest, cleanest swell of the window. If you miss that, Monday the 31st of August is a decent fallback. Crowds are likely at Super Tubes, especially when it’s good.
Rusty.
