The Lowdown
Gather 'round, crew. Let's talk about Oyster Bay. This is a sandbar set-up that's exposed to the southeast swell window, but it's an inconsistent spot – it doesn't fire all the time. There's a bit of a slow start here, so we're looking at a few days of building energy before things get really interesting.
The first real chance to get wet comes Monday, the 24th of August. We've got a 6ft SW swell rolling in with a 12-second period, but the wind is a light cross-onshore breeze at 6 mph, which is putting a bit of a wrinkle on the surface. The combined energy is moderate (1013), but the conditions are described as marginal, so it's a bit of a gamble. Not the best start.
Moving into Tuesday the 25th, the swell bumps up to 8ft from the SW with a 13-second period. The energy is getting strong (3297), but again, we've got a gentle cross-onshore breeze making it choppy. It's a no-go for me.
Wednesday the 26th is where the wind shifts. A 19 mph cross-offshore breeze from the east cleans things right up, and we've got a solid 8ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. The energy is pumping (3336). This is a powerful, long-period swell, so at a sandbar, it might break a bit straight and fast, but for the experienced crew, it's game on. Thursday morning the 27th is the absolute stand-out. Offshore winds from the NE at 9 mph, a 7ft SSW swell, and a 12-second period. The energy is strong (2821), and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. Then Thursday afternoon goes glassy – a 3 mph breeze from the SE, 5ft S swell, and it's mirror-smooth. That's the session to circle. Friday the 28th keeps the clean vibes going with a cross-offshore breeze and a 5ft S swell, but the energy drops off a bit (1013).
After that, the weekend takes a turn. Saturday the 29th has a 19 mph cross-offshore wind that makes it clean, but the swell drops to 3ft and the energy is weak (379). Not worth the paddle. Sunday the 30th gets messy with strong cross-onshore winds and building rain. The run of poor conditions stretches through the end of August and into September. There's a big 12ft SSW swell on the 4th of September, but it's accompanied by 25 mph onshore winds, making it a total mess. That kind of energy and wind is more for the kite crew than us.
The next real sniff of something decent comes on Tuesday the 8th of September. We've got a 6ft S swell with a 10-second period, and a 16 mph cross-offshore breeze from the ENE keeping it clean. The energy is moderate (581), and the conditions are marginal but at least clean. It's a long way out, but it's something to keep an eye on.
Overall, the best on offer is Thursday the 27th of August. The morning offshore wind and the afternoon glass-off are the clear winners. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
