The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the table for Oyster Bay over the next couple of weeks.
First off, it’s a frustrating start. There’s a whole lot of nothing happening for the first few days. The wind is a mess, the swell is messy, and the quality is just poor. We’re looking at a blank run from Tuesday, July 14th, right through to Wednesday morning, July 16th. Nothing worth paddling out for.
Then, things get interesting, but it’s not for everyone. On Thursday morning, July 16th, we get a proper pulse of SW groundswell – 10 ft with a 14-second period. The energy is pumping (3276), and with a light NNE offshore breeze, it’ll be clean. But here’s the thing: that’s 10 ft. That’s expert territory only. Oyster Bay is a sandbar, and a long-period groundswell like that can make it break a bit straight and heavy. The afternoon gets a little smaller at 8 ft, still clean, and still a good option for the experienced crew.
Friday, July 17th, is a write-off again. That clean window closes fast. On Saturday, July 18th, it gets interesting again. The morning has a 6 ft S swell with a 12-second period – solid, moderate energy (1296). The wind is cross-off and clean, so it’s a good bet. The real standout, though, is Saturday afternoon. The wind drops to glassy, the swell is 6 ft from the S, and it’s clean as you like (1068 energy). That’s the pick of the first week.
Sunday July 19th is a blowout, no good.
The second week opens up with a huge swell. Monday July 20th through Wednesday July 23rd is all big SSW swell – 10 ft to 12 ft, with periods from 11 to 16 seconds. The energy reads are massive (3545, 4957…). But it’s too big for this break. The models say it’s favorable, but 10 ft+ on a sandbar is a hammering. Thursday July 23rd is a total washout with near-gale winds.
Then we get a nice little window. Friday July 24th morning: clean, offshore wind, 5 ft SW swell with a 14-second period (1245 energy). That’s a very good, clean, long-period groundswell for the experienced surfers. The afternoon is even cleaner, with 4 ft and a 13-second period. This is your best bet for the second week.
Saturday July 25th morning has a glassy 7 ft E swell, but it’s short-period (8 seconds). It’ll be fun, but a bit weak. The model rates it excellent, but it’s a short-period windswell, so don’t expect world-class shape.
Sunday July 26th is messy again. From Monday July 27th through Tuesday July 28th morning, we get another run of clean, offshore winds with 7 ft to 8 ft SW swell (14-second period). That’s expert-level, clean, and powerful. Tuesday afternoon is too big again.
So, overall: the standout is Saturday afternoon, July 18th. Glossy, 6 ft S swell, 12-second period – clean, fun, and manageable. The second standout is Friday, July 24th morning – clean offshore, 5 ft SW groundswell. That’s your ticket for the second week if you’re experienced. Crowds are possible at Oyster Bay, so keep an eye out.
Rusty, signing off.
