The Lowdown
Gap at the start, folks. Nothing worth paddling out for on Tuesday the 18th or Wednesday the 19th. The ocean’s just not cooperating at Oyster Bay. We’re looking at a few days of messy, choppy conditions and onshores that’ll have you fighting the whitewater more than riding it.
The first real window of opportunity shows up Thursday morning on the 20th. We’ve got a solid 13ft SW swell rolling in, but it’s just too much for this sandbar. This spot is gonna be maxed out and dumping, so unless you’re an absolute charger looking for a beating, it’s probably not your day. The energy is strong though, but it's just too raw.
Friday the 21st offers a bit of a reset. The swell drops to 8ft from the SW with a 12-second period, and we finally get a cross-offshore breeze in the morning. It should be cleaner, but the quality is still a bit marginal. You’ll find some fun ones if you’re patient, but it’s not the standout of the week.
The weekend is a write-off. Saturday the 22nd gets blown out by a near gale, and Sunday the 23rd isn’t much better. Big, messy, and ugly. This is one of those times where the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
We get a little tease on Monday the 24th but the waves are small and weak, not really worth the paddle.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday morning, the 25th of August, is looking like our first genuine standout. The swell is still a solid 10ft from the SW, but it’s accompanied by glassy conditions. The problem is, it's still likely too big for this break, pushing it into expert territory. That size is a real caveat.
The best call of the whole window, the one I’d circle on the calendar, is Wednesday the 26th, in the afternoon. The swell has backed off to a much more manageable 5ft from the SW, the period is a nice 13 seconds, and the wind is dead glassy. This is when Oyster Bay really comes alive. It’ll be clean, have some push, and be far more user-friendly for the intermediate crew. This is the day to get your fill.
After that, we get a few small, grovelly days, and then there’s another promising window at the very end of the month. Saturday the 29th of August, in the morning, sees a 8ft SW swell with a 15-second period and light offshore winds. It’s a bit more of a long-range call, so don’t book your flights just yet, but it’s certainly promising.
Then the ocean gets a bit wild again, with a big 12ft+ swell early in September looking too hefty for this spot. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but that Wednesday afternoon session is the one. Keep your eyes on the forecast.
