The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at a pretty quiet start in Oyster Bay. The first few days are a write-off – Wednesday the 15th is a mess with onshore winds and choppy water, and the energy is weak (355). So we’ve got a couple of days of nothing before the real action kicks in.
Thursday the 16th morning is where things get interesting, but it’s a big one. We’ve got a solid 10ft swell from the SW, with a long 14-second period. The combined energy is huge (3236). The wind is cross-shore, which is okay, but this swell is too big for the break. This is expert-only territory, and honestly, it’s pushing the limits. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 8ft, but still mean and choppy.
Friday the 17th is more of the same – big, powerful, and messy. That 10ft SW swell with a 12-second period is still pumping, but the wind is cross-on and it’s choppy. Not for the faint of heart.
Saturday the 18th morning sees a drop in size to 3ft, with clean conditions and a nice cross-off breeze from the NE. The energy is moderate (541). It’s a bit small, but clean. The afternoon is a little bigger at 4ft, but wind is light and cross-on, so it’s not perfect.
Sunday the 19th is a complete write-off – strong winds and messy, lumpy conditions. Don’t bother.
Now, here’s where it gets good. Monday the 20th afternoon is a standout. We’ve got a 8ft SW swell (12-second period), clean conditions with a cross-off breeze from the east, and the energy is solid (1753). The report calls it excellent for experienced surfers, and I agree. The wave quality is there, and the wind is working for us. This is the best session on offer, no doubt.
Tuesday the 21st through Thursday the 24th sees a relentless run of massive swells – 10ft to 15ft – with long periods (14-16 seconds). The energy is huge (over 4000). This is all for experts only, and the wind is often cross-on or choppy, so it’s not the best quality. The waves will be powerful and heavy, but the shape might be messy.
Friday the 24th morning is a bit better – 10ft, clean, cross-off wind from the NNW. The energy is still massive (3989). This is a window for the brave, but it’s still big.
The weekend of the 26th and 27th has some smaller windows. The 26th afternoon is glassy with a 10ft S swell, but it’s still big. The 27th sees 10ft SE swells with clean winds, but again, big.
The last few days of July into August are a mix of big swells and onshore winds, with the 29th and 30th being too messy or too big to really enjoy.
The standout is Monday the 20th afternoon. That’s your window. Clean, solid, and for the experienced crew. The rest of the run is dwarfed by the sheer size, with only short windows of clean conditions for the brave.
Rusty out.
