The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
First up, we’ve got Oyster Bay (sandbar). Right now, the water is a chilly 60°, which is a whopping 6° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, so you’ll want a thick suit.
The next few days are a bit of a write-off. Friday the 21st has some 7ft SW swell but it’s a cross-shore mess with a cross-chop, and the energy is moderate (1308). Saturday is a total no-go with near gale winds and blown-out conditions. Sunday and Monday are marginal, with gentle cross-onshore winds and choppy surf. The swell is there, but the quality is just not there.
Now, hold onto your board. Tuesday the 25th is a real standout. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW groundswell with a long 14-second period, generating strong wave energy (3301). The morning is glassy, and the afternoon is dead calm glassy. This is a proper groundswell, so it’ll be better shaped and have more energy, but at 10ft it’s expert territory only. The combined energy is strong, and the setup here is a sandbar, so with that long period, it might be a bit straight for the beach breaks – but if you’re an experienced surfer, this is the session to circle.
Wednesday the 26th sees a shift to 7ft SSW swell, but a fresh breeze keeps it clean. The energy is still moderate (1847). Thursday the 27th afternoon is a gem: 6ft S swell, 15-second period, light breeze, clean conditions, and strong energy (2572). It’s excellent for experienced surfers. Friday the 28th morning is glassy with 5ft S swell, but the energy drops (1182).
The weekend of the 29th and 30th is a mess again, with strong winds and poor conditions. The 31st Monday morning is glassy with 8ft SW swell, but it’s a big one for a sandbar, so only for the brave.
Looking into the first week of September, there’s a promising window on Thursday the 3rd morning with 8ft SW swell, 14-second period, light cross-onshore, and good energy (2024). A bit lumpy, but workable. Then Friday the 4th afternoon has a big 12ft ESE swell with a short 9-second period, but it’s clean and strong (2080). That’s expert-only, huge and punchy. Saturday the 5th morning is glassy with 8ft ESE swell, again for the experienced.
The best on offer: Tuesday the 25th is the true standout – glassy, massive groundswell, but experts only. For a slightly more manageable but still excellent session, Thursday the 27th afternoon is a beauty.
Rusty.
