G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up at Oyster Bay over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get the blood pumping.
We start with a bit of a slow one. The first session on the cards is Sunday afternoon, July 5th. You’re looking at a 4ft swell coming from the ESE with a 12-second period, giving us moderate wave energy (620). It’s a bit marginal with a light cross-onshore breeze, so it’s not the cleanest, but it’s a start.
Now, Monday morning, July 6th, is where it gets interesting. The wind goes glassy, coming from the NNW at 3 mph, and the swell bumps up to 6ft from the SW, period sitting at 12 seconds. That’s got solid energy behind it (1119), and with it being glassy, the conditions are going to be excellent for experienced surfers. The water temperature is 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year—about 2° cooler—so you might want a springsuit if you’re sensitive.
Monday afternoon sees the wind shift to a cross-offshore breeze from the east at 9 mph, keeping things clean with a 6ft SW swell (1138 energy). Another good call for the afternoon session.
From Tuesday, July 7th, through to Thursday, July 9th, the wind gets ugly. Strong cross-onshore winds, mostly from the west and WSW, blow through 16 to 19 mph, and the swell builds to over 8ft. On Thursday morning it hits 10ft with a 14-second period, and the energy is pumping (4003), but the wind is just too messy. Poor conditions across the board, not worth paddling out.
Friday, July 10th, the swell is still massive at 12ft from the SSW. The wind is offshore from the east, so it’s clean, but the swell is simply too big for Oyster Bay. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it’s questionable. The energy is huge (4772 on the morning). The same goes for Friday afternoon.
Now, Saturday, July 11th, shapes up nicely. The morning is a bit dicey with a risk of thunderstorms and strong cross-offshore wind, but the afternoon is a beauty. The wind goes glassy, east at 3 mph, and the SW swell is 7ft with a 12-second period (1849 energy). That’s excellent, clean surf for experienced surfers. During the morning, the swell is 7ft, so still solid.
Sunday, July 12th, is another standout. Morning glassy conditions again, with the wind from the west at 3 mph. This time the swell is 8ft from the southeast with a shorter 8-second period (1218 energy). Clean, powerful surf—another excellent call for experienced surfers.
From Monday, July 13th, through Wednesday, July 15th, the wind turns onshore and strong again, ruining the surf. The swell is still there, but the conditions are choppy and lumpy. Not worth it.
Thursday, July 16th, remains poor with strong, messy winds. A skip day.
Friday, July 17th, gives us a morning window. The wind goes offshore from the northeast at 6 mph, and the swell is 6ft from the SSW with a 12-second period (1586 energy). Clean conditions for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a light cross-shore breeze, so it’s not as clean.
Saturday, July 18th, is a write-off with moderate cross-onshore winds.
Sunday, July 19th, morning is your call. Offshore wind from the northeast at 6 mph, 6ft SSW swell with a 12-second period (823 energy). Very good, clean conditions.
The standout session overall? It’s a toss-up between Monday morning, July 6th, and Sunday morning, July 12th, but I’d lean toward Monday, July 6th, for that early glass with building swell. The water is a touch cooler than average, but that clean SW groundswell is hard to beat.
Crowds at Oyster Bay are “sometimes” an issue, so on those glassy mornings, get in early.
Signing off, Rusty.
