The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking in on the local surf scene for Oyster Bay.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands. The next few days are looking pretty average, with messy onshore winds and lumpy conditions. We’ll have to sit through a poor run from Sunday the 19th through Thursday the 23rd, with cross-onshore winds and choppy surf. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want a thicker suit.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Tuesday morning, the 21st. It’s a standout for the early part of the forecast. The wind goes glassy, with a light offshore breeze from the north at just 3 mph. That’s going to clean things right up. We’ve got a solid 6ft of long-period SW groundswell at 15 seconds, and the energy is powerful (1696). The break is inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for sets, but when they come, they’ll be clean and well-shaped. This is for experienced surfers as the swell is pushing past 5ft. It’s the best of the first week.
Later on, Thursday morning the 24th looks promising, but it’s a caveat. The swell is pumping at 12ft from the SSW with a very long 16-second period, and the wind is light and cross-off, creating clean conditions. The problem is it’s just too big for this break. Only experts should even think about paddling out, and honestly, it might be more of a kiteboarding show than a paddle-in session. The energy is massive (6437).
The real standout run, and the best on offer in the whole 16 days, kicks off on Saturday morning the 25th. The wind goes glassy again, with a clean 8ft SW groundswell (2090 energy). That’s a solid, powerful wave that should hold up well. The conditions hold through Sunday afternoon the 26th, with a gentle offshore breeze from the NNE at 9 mph, keeping the waves clean and lined up. The swell is still a solid 6ft on Sunday. This is the window to aim for.
Looking further out, the pattern gets a bit messy again with strong onshore winds and big, blown-out swell from the 27th to the 30th. The second week has a few good calls, but they’re less certain. The best of that late period looks like Sunday, August 2nd. That afternoon is showing a clean 8ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period, light offshore wind, and massive energy (3939). It’s a promising call for the future, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
Oyster Bay is inconsistent, so when it’s good, it’s a quiet session with long waits, but the quality is there. The pickup for this week is definitely the Tuesday morning glass-off, and for the big session, keep your eyes on that Saturday-Monday run at the end of July.
Rusty.
