Table - best surf conditions forecast for Oyster Bay over the next 16 days.
Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. There’s just one spot on the table for the next couple of weeks, Oyster Bay – a sandbar setup that’s exposed to the south-east. It’s an inconsistent one, so when it fires, you’ve got to be on it. Water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
We’ve got a bit of a gap at the start of the period, but things kick off properly on Friday the 3rd of July. The morning starts with some clouds and a light north-westerly breeze, keeping it cross-off and clean. Swell is a solid 7ft out of the SE with an 11-second period – that’s a groundswell pushing moderate energy through (2029). It’s a bit much for a learner, but for an experienced surfer, this is excellent. Glassy conditions roll in for the afternoon as the wind drops to a slight SSE air – still 8ft SE swell (1581), absolutely clean. This is the standout of the whole outlook. Get in the water Friday.
Saturday the 4th keeps it going with a similar theme. Morning clean again under NW cross-off winds, 7ft SE swell at 12 seconds (1497). By afternoon the sky clears, wind swings SE and goes glassy – 6ft (1068). Still excellent for those who know what they’re doing, and crowds are possible, so don’t sleep in.
Sunday the 5th sees the swell drop to 5ft, still a nice 12-second period from the SE in the morning with NNW cross-off winds (758). Still good but easing. The afternoon turns onshore SSW and the quality drops – marginal.
Monday the 6th brings a shift. The swell swings to the SW, 7ft with a 12-second period (1432), and the morning goes glassy with a NNW breeze. Excellent again, but it’s a point/reef-style groundswell – better shaped, longer lulls. Afternoon holds clean with E cross-off winds.
Tuesday the 7th gets a bit messy. The swell stays around 7ft from the SW but the wind goes cross-onshore in the morning, and the quality slides into marginal territory. Afternoon is glassy but onshore wind – doesn’t look great.
Wednesday the 8th is a write-off. Strong WSW winds hit 19 mph in the morning, cranking up to 25 mph in the afternoon. Swell is 8-10ft from the SW, but it’s lumpy, messy, and blown out – poor conditions for a paddle. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Thursday the 9th through to the start of the second week gets ugly for most. Swell builds to 10-12ft from the SSW, long period (14 seconds), but the energy is huge (4353). For Oyster Bay, that’s too big – expert-only and even then, it’s questionable. Winds are cross-off and clean, so it’s not choppy, but the size is the issue.
By Friday the 10th and into the weekend, the swell drops a bit to 8ft and then 7ft, but winds pick up to moderate and fresh breezes from the east, and the surf is marginal or just plain poor. The energy stays moderate to strong, but the wind messes it up.
Sunday the 12th sees a massive 10ft S swell with a very long 16-second period (5589), but a near gale from the ENE makes it unsurfable – blown out completely. This continues into the start of the new week with strong westerlies.
Things finally look up again on Saturday the 18th of July. Morning brings clear skies, a NNE offshore wind at 9 mph, and the swell settles to 7ft from the SSW with a 12-second period (1573). It’s clean, offshore, and excellent for experienced surfers. If you’re holding out, that’s your second window.
So, bottom line: Friday the 3rd through Monday the 6th is your best run. Glassy, clean, solid swell from the right direction. Beyond that, there’s a lot of wind and size to sit through. The 18th looks promising too, but it’s a long way out.
Rusty.
