The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's chop it up for Oyster Bay.

We're looking at a real mixed bag over the next couple of weeks. The first week is mostly junk, with only a few windows for the experienced guys. The water is running a very unusual 60.1°, which is much colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll want a thick wetsuit.

We've got a few days of nothing. Saturday the 22nd is a total loss with near gale winds and blown-out junk. Sunday the 23rd sees the swell start to build, hitting that 7.9ft mark in the morning, but it's still cross-onshore and fairly choppy. Not worth it. Monday the 24th is the same story.

Now, Tuesday the 25th is the first real standout, but it's a big one. The morning session sees a strong 9.8ft SSW groundswell (14-second period) with a combined energy of 3427. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it won't be glassy. The problem is, with that much size, Oyster Bay is just too big for this break. This is for experts only, and it's going to be a heavy session.

The next gem appears on Wednesday the 26th afternoon. The swell holds at 9.8ft from the SSW, but the period stretches to a massive 16 seconds. The combined energy is a powerful 4056. The wind swings cross-offshore, making the faces clean. Again, at 9.8ft, this is not for the faint of heart. The morning of the 28th of August offers a reprieve. The swell settles to a manageable 5.2ft from the S, with a 12-second period. The cross-offshore wind is barely a whisper, giving clean conditions. This is the best clean, non-huge wave of the first week for those with some experience.

After that, the first weekend of September gets interesting. Tuesday the 1st of September morning kicks off with a glassy, 6.9ft SW swell. Offshore wind is dead calm, so the conditions will be perfect. Wednesday the 2nd also looks good with a clean, cross-off breeze and a 6.6ft SW swell.

The biggest action looks to be the following week. Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon could be a monster session for the big-wave chargers. A strong 11.5ft SW groundswell (15-seconds) with an energy of 4830 arrives with a clean, moderate offshore breeze. That is a recipe for heavy barrels for experts only. The morning of Friday the 4th of September is even bigger, with a 13.1ft SW swell (14-second period) and a 5154 combined energy. Gentle offshore winds will groom it, but again, this is massive and for experts paddling big-wave guns.

After that, it looks like the swell pumps through the end of the week, but the wind turns cross-onshore again, making the huge swell a lumpy mess for the weekend of the 6th.

Rusty's Pick:
For the everyday surfer, the standout is the morning of Saturday, August 28th. It's clean, it's manageable at 5.2ft S swell, and it’s not packed yet. For the big-wave crew, the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning of September 3rd and 4th are the targets, but you'll be in the danger zone.
