Table - best surf conditions forecast for Oyster Bay over the next 16 days.

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

Well, looks like Oyster Bay is going to be a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got plenty of swell on the way, but the wind is going to be the main character in this story for a while. The first proper window of clean surf isn’t until Saturday the 11th, so we’ve got a bit of a wait.

The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so nothing crazy on that front.

We start off Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th with a solid 10ft to 12ft SW swell, but it’s coming in with cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The combined energy is strong, between 3496 and 4139, but it’s just messy. Not worth paddling out for.

Our first real standout is Saturday morning, July 11th. The swell is still a solid 8ft from the SSW with a period of 12 seconds, and the wind swings around to a light cross-offshore breeze. The report says “clean” and “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is a solid groundswell, and with that size, it’s definitely one for the more advanced crew. The combined energy is 2187, so there’s some punch.

Sunday morning, July 12th, is also worth a look. The swell drops to 6ft from the SSW, still a nice 11-second period, and the wind stays light cross-offshore. It’s clean, and the energy is down to 911, so it’s more manageable. Good for a Sunday session.

Monday morning, July 13th, is a glassy little window. The swell is only 6ft but from the east with a short period of 7 seconds, and the wind is glassy. The energy is 942, so it’s not a powerhouse, but with glassy conditions, it’ll be fun for a longboard or a fish.

After that, we get a stretch of smaller, wind-affected surf until Friday the 17th. On Friday morning, July 17th, we get a big 10ft SW swell with a 12-second period, but the wind is cross-shore, and the report says the swell is too big for this break. The combined energy is 2681, but it’s a beast for experts only if they can handle the size at this spot.

Then we hit a massive pulse starting Wednesday the 22nd. The 22nd and 23rd see 10ft to 13ft SW swell with periods of 15 to 17 seconds. That’s a very long-period groundswell. The energy is huge, over 5000, but the wind is onshore or cross-offshore, and multiple reports say it’s too big for this break. This is strictly for the brave.

The absolute best bet for the whole run? I’d call Saturday morning, July 11th. That 8ft SSW groundswell with clean, cross-offshore winds is the top of the pile. The waves will have some shape, and while the crowd might be there, it’s the best quality on offer.

To sum it up: there’s a lot of swell, but the wind is your enemy. The first week is a write-off, with a few clean windows on the 11th, 12th, and 13th. The second week brings bigger, more powerful swells, but they’re either too big or blown out. If you’re an expert, keep an eye on the 17th and the 23rd, but don’t get your hopes up for clean conditions.

Rusty.
