The Lowdown

Righto, let’s get stuck into this. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this stretch of coast like a hawk. Oyster Bay (Oyster-Bay) is a sandbar setup that’s exposed to the swell, but it’s inconsistent, so don’t get your hopes up for a daily fix. This 16-day window is a weird one. There’s plenty of swell on the way, but honestly, most of it comes with junk wind. The water temps are a real shocker right now—56.8° at the start. That’s 8.8° colder than normal for August. It’s way out of whack, so you’ll want a thick steamer if you’re heading in.

There’s nothing worth paddling for on Tuesday the 18th. The morning shows a 6.9 ft SW swell (13 seconds) with a cross-onshore wind at 16 mph, and the wave energy is a hefty 1661, but it’s choppy and poor. The afternoon is similar—8.2 ft SW, same period, but the wind drops slightly, yet it’s still marginal. Skip it.

Wednesday the 19th morning has potential on paper—9.8 ft SW swell (13 seconds), but it’s cross-onshore with only 3 mph breeze. The combined energy is 2525, but the forecast says the swell is too big for this break. Over 8.2 ft, so experts only. Wind is light, but it’s not offshore. The afternoon gets blown out by a 19 mph WSW wind. Not a goer.

Thursday the 20th is a write-off for paddle surfing. The morning has 13.1 ft SW swell (13 seconds) and massive energy at 5111, but it’s choppy and messy with a 12 mph cross-onshore. The afternoon has 11.5 ft SW swell, cleaner wind (SSW 6 mph, onshore), but again, it’s too big for Oyster Bay, and the energy is 4280. Only for the hardcore.

Now, here’s the standout. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best on offer. Friday the 21st morning. The swell drops to a manageable 7.5 ft from the SW (12 seconds), and the wind comes out of the ENE at 9 mph as a cross-offshore, which leaves the surface clean. Combined energy is 1556, which is moderate. This is your window. It’ll be clean, the swell is solid for intermediates, but don’t forget—this break is inconsistent, so sets might be a bit spread out. Crowds are possible here sometimes, so don’t be shocked if a few locals are on it. The afternoon on Friday loses the clean wind—ESE 12 mph brings a cross-chop. Not as good.

Saturday the 22nd is a mess. Morning has 4.3 ft swell, but a 25 mph cross-onshore makes it ugly. Afternoon has a 14.8 ft SW swell (10 seconds) but with a near-gale cross-onshore. Blown out.

Sunday the 23rd morning has 13.1 ft SW swell, but a 16 mph cross-onshore keeps it choppy. Afternoon drops to 11.5 ft with light onshore wind, but again, it’s too big.

Monday the 24th: morning has 7.5 ft SW swell, cross-onshore wind, choppy. Afternoon has 5.6 ft SSW swell, same story. Not worth it.

Tuesday the 25th: morning and afternoon have 8.2 ft SW swell (14 seconds), but cross-onshore winds keep it messy. The energy is high (2609 and 2749), but the wind ruins it.

Wednesday the 26th morning has 5.2 ft SW swell, but the wind is a strong 22 mph cross-offshore, so it’s clean but bumpy. Afternoon shifts to a 7.9 ft E swell (9 seconds) with 19 mph cross-offshore, clean but short period. Marginal.

From Thursday the 27th through the end of the month, it’s mostly poor or marginal. There’s a glimmer on Saturday the 29th morning—6.9 ft SW swell (13 seconds) with a NE cross-offshore at 16 mph, clean, but the energy is 1567. It’s a backup option.

The real long-range promise comes on Tuesday the 1st of September morning. Oyster Bay gets a 9.8 ft SW swell (13 seconds), combined energy of 3627, and the wind is light out of the east (3 mph) as a cross-offshore. Clean as a whistle. This is promising, but it’s far out, so don’t bet the house on it. It’s too big for beginners, but for experts, this could be the one. The afternoon stays clean but has 13.1 ft SW swell—big.

Wednesday the 2nd of September morning has 9.8 ft SW swell (12 seconds), light ESE wind, cross-shore. Clean surface. Afternoon has the same swell size, but a 19 mph cross-offshore keeps it clean. Both are too big for most, but experts might have fun.

Overall, the only true standout is Friday the 21st morning. Decent swell, clean conditions, and moderate energy. After that, it’s a waiting game for the
