The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me break it down for what’s on offer at Oyster Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first few days are a write-off. Tuesday and Wednesday look pretty grim with cross and cross-onshore winds messing up what little swell there is. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good wetsuit if you’re even thinking about it. But honestly, don't bother.
The real interest kicks off on Thursday the 16th in the morning. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW groundswell rolling in with a 14-second period – that’s long-period, proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a big 3231 (moderate to strong), but here’s the catch: this break is exposed and that size is too big for Oyster Bay. It’s expert-only territory, and even then, that long-period SW swell tends to race past beach and sandbar setups. The wind is light and cross, so it’s not blown out, but the sheer power makes it a dicey call for most. Friday the 17th afternoon shapes up a bit better – still a decent 8ft SW groundswell, 11-second period, but the wind turns cross-off and it goes clean. That’s a good window for experienced surfers who know the sandbar.
Heading into the next week, Monday the 20th looks promising with clean, cross-off winds and a consistent 8ft SSW swell. It’s not a standout session for the crowds, but if you can find a peak, it’ll be worth the paddle. Then April 21st Tuesday morning – wow. We’re looking at 10ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 4034 (strong). Again, this is too big for Oyster Bay for most, but for the brave and skilled, it’s a serious session. The wind is cross, not ideal, but the power is undeniable. That afternoon, the wind cranks up to 31 mph from the WSW and it’s blown out – no good.
The real standout? I’d put my money on Thursday the 24th morning. It’s not the biggest swell at 6ft, but it’s from the SSE with a short 7-second period – small, clean, and with light offshore wind from the north. The energy is manageable at 585 (moderate) and the break will be clean. It’s not a day for the big-wave hunters, but for a fun, cruisy session on the sandbar, that’s your pick. The 25th Saturday morning also offers a clean 5ft SW groundswell with moderate offshore wind – another solid option, but the 24th has the better overall conditions for a good paddle.
Further out, the 28th Tuesday morning is another expert-level session with 8ft SW groundswell, long period, and clean offshore wind – but by that point, you’re two weeks away and forecasts get a little more iffy.
Overall, there’s a decent run from the 16th onward, but the first few days are a washout. If you can wait, the 24th is the one to circle.
