The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Oyster Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. Sunday and Monday are a mess with onshore wind and sloppy, weak surf – you wouldn't want to bother. The water's sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than what we'd normally expect for this time of year, so you'll want a decent suit.
The real action kicks off on Tuesday, the 21st of July. That morning is a beauty. A solid 6ft groundswell from the SW, with a very long period of 15 seconds, rolling in under glassy conditions. The energy is pumping (1658), and the waves will have real power. This is a standout session for experienced surfers, as the swell is starting to get a bit meaty. The break is a sandbar and it's inconsistent, so you'll need some patience, but when a set comes through, it'll be well worth the wait. It can get a crowd here sometimes, so get there early.
Wednesday morning, the 22nd, is another cracker. We've got a 7ft SW swell (12 seconds) and it's glassy again. The wave energy is strong (1696). This is the pick of the week for a cleaner, more manageable wave than Tuesday's longer-period sets. But by Wednesday afternoon, the wind swings onshore and it all turns to slop, so make the most of the morning.
After that, things get raw. Thursday and Friday the swell climbs, but it arrives with a brutal cross-onshore wind. The swell is huge, but it's just not rideable for paddle surfing. Saturday the 25th is still too big and a bit bumpy. You'd be better off with a kite for this stretch.
Now, there's a bit of a gap. The middle of the second week looks tricky with strong onshore winds for a few days in a row. The good news is we get a window on Sunday the 26th of July. The swell has dropped to a manageable 6ft from the SW, and the wind swings to a clean cross-off. It's a bit smaller, but the conditions will be much cleaner.
Then we have a real promise for the end of the run. The 31st of July and the 1st of August are showing some serious size. We're looking at a 13ft+ swell from the ESE, but the kicker is it's coming in with light offshore or glassy conditions. The energy figures are massive (over 3000 and 4000). This is a classic "too big for this spot" situation though. The wind is perfect, but the sheer volume of water will probably make Oyster Bay a washing machine. For the experienced crew who know how to handle a heavy, closed-out sandbar, it'll be a spectacle, but it's not a beginner's day out.
In short, the first week's standout is Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning for clean, powerful surf. The second week offers a small window of clean surf on the 26th, but the real headlines at the end of July are for the huge, clean swell that will be a challenge even for the experts.
Rusty, signing off.
