The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what Oyster Bay’s got cookin’ for the next couple of weeks. Let’s be straight up – it’s a bit of a slow dance at the start, but there’s some serious muscle forecast to roll through later. We’ve got a solid sandbar setup that’s exposed to the south-east, so it picks up a lot of what the ocean throws at it.
Right now, the Saturday (18th) is a write-off. We’re looking at a 4ft S swell, but it’s got a cross-shore breeze messing it up. The wave energy’s weak at 759, and conditions are just marginal. Best to leave the boards in the car for this one.
Sunday (19th) ain’t much better. The wind is still onshore and choppy with that WSW breeze. The swell’s a touch smaller at 5ft from the SW, but the energy is still low (764) and it’s all messy. We’re still waiting.
Now, Monday morning the 20th is where we start to see a pulse. The swell jumps to 8ft out of the SW, and the wind shifts to a light NW cross-off. The energy is cranking up to a solid 1702. This is proper, clean surf for experienced crew. The offshore flow will have those lines looking tidy.
Tuesday the 21st morning is the real standout of the first week. It’s glassy, dead calm with a NE breeze, and a 6ft SSW groundswell with a long 15-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, folks. Wave energy is strong at 1460. This is going to be clean, lined-up, and offering some nice shape. Get in the water early.
Wednesday the 22nd morning looks decent again with a 7ft SW swell at 13 seconds and a light W cross-shore, keeping it fairly clean. The energy is strong (1684). Thursday the 23rd morning gets big – 10ft from the SW, but that’s too much juice for this break. The swell’s predicted to be too big.
That trend continues into the end of the month. Friday the 24th is massive – 13ft SSW with a 16-second period, glassy conditions, and energy through the roof at 7384. It sounds epic, but it’s too big for Oyster Bay unless you’re a proper charger on a big wave gun. Same story Saturday (25th) and Sunday (26th): solid 10ft+ swells but poor wind or too big. This is kite-surf territory for a few days rather than a paddle session.
By Monday the 27th, the size drops to 8ft, but the wind is up – a strong 25 mph E cross-off keeps it clean, but it’s big and energetic. Tuesday the 28th offers a nice window though: a 6ft SSW swell with a 15-second period and a clean NNE offshore wind. That’s proper surf for experienced surfers with a moderate energy of 1795. It’s a good morning session to end July.
The first few days of August look small. Friday the 31st is blown out with a near gale, Saturday the 1st has a clean 4ft SSW groundswell but only 371 energy. That’s a small, weak wave, so don’t expect much. By Sunday the 2nd, it’s fizzled out to a 3ft S windswell.
The highlight here is Tuesday the 21st morning – glassy, clean, a solid 6ft SSW groundswell with 15-second period. That’s the session to circle on the calendar.
Rusty.
