The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at what’s coming up for Oyster Bay. This is a sandbar setup that’s inconsistent, meaning it doesn’t fire all the time, and when it does, you’ve got to be ready for some real size. The water is sitting at 60° today, which is much colder than normal for this time of year—about 6° below average, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit if you’re heading in.

The pattern starts with a massive pulse of southwest swell rolling in on Thursday the 20th of August. We’re talking 12 ft of swell from the SW with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 4678 — that’s strong stuff. The wind is light offshore from the SW, so it’ll be clean, but honestly, this is way too big for this break. It’s an expert-only situation, and even then, it’s pushing the limits. The next real standout comes on Friday the 21st of August, early morning. The swell drops to 8 ft from the SW, still with a solid 12-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NE. The water’s clean, and the energy is still strong at 1616. This is the best on offer for the first week — experienced surfers only, but the conditions are excellent.

Saturday the 22nd gets blown out with strong cross-onshore winds, and Sunday the 23rd is messy with onshore flow, so those are write-offs. We then hit a gap of a few days with marginal conditions until Monday the 25th of August morning. That session looks glassy with a 10 ft SW swell at 14 seconds — very long period groundswell — and the energy is a huge 3208. The wind is glassy from the ENE, but again, the size is too big for this break, so it’s just for the big-wave crew.

The next week brings a bit of hope. On Wednesday the 26th of August afternoon, the swell drops to 4 ft from the SSW, period 11 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the ESE. The energy is moderate at 803, and conditions are clean. This is a good option for intermediates and beginners, but remember, Oyster Bay is inconsistent, so don’t expect it to be pumping. Then Thursday the 27th of August afternoon looks glassy with a 4 ft S swell, 11-second period, and moderate energy at 562 — that’s another clean, easy session.

After that, the wind turns nasty from the 28th through to the 30th, with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. We’ve got a run of poor surf until Sunday the 31st of August morning, when a light cross-offshore from the E meets a 4 ft SW swell at 10 seconds. The energy is low at 420, but it’s clean and rideable for less experienced surfers. The first week of September is a write-off — strong winds and massive swell building again, with 18 ft on the 3rd of September from the SW at 14 seconds, energy of 11359, way too big again.

So, the standout is Friday the 21st of August morning — 8 ft SW, clean cross-offshore wind, and solid energy. After that, Wednesday the 26th of August afternoon and Thursday the 27th of August afternoon offer smaller, cleaner windows for a more relaxed paddle. Big picture, Oyster Bay is a spot that comes alive with size, but it’s rarely perfect for long.

Rusty.
