The Lowdown

Alright, gather 'round and listen up. Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for Oyster Bay. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but there's light at the end of the tunnel.

We're starting off with Oyster Bay. This is a sandbar setup, and it's inconsistent, so don't expect it to be pumping every day. The water is sitting at 60°, which is a solid 6° colder than it should be for this time of year. That's a major chill, so you'll want a good thick wetsuit if you're paddling out.

The first real alert comes in on Friday, August 21st. The morning is looking prime. We've got a glassy 2.4m SW groundswell with a period of 12 seconds rolling in. The combined energy is a solid 1616, which is strong. With a slight easterly breeze keeping it clean, this is the session to target. It's a bit on the bigger side, so it's not for the groms, but experienced surfers are going to have a field day. The afternoon takes a hit as the wind picks up to 16 mph, making it choppy.

Saturday and Sunday are a write-off. Strong onshore winds will have the place chopped up and messy. The swell is all over the place, but the wind is the enemy here.

Monday, August 24th is a no-go as well. The wind is still cross-onshore, and the swell is a jumbled mess.

Now, Tuesday, August 25th is a big one, but with a serious caveat. We're looking at a 3.0m SW groundswell with a very long period of 14 seconds. The combined energy rockets up to 3155. The wind is a light offshore, so it will be clean. But here's the thing: 3.0m is massive for this spot. It's genuinely too big for most people and only for the elite. The sets will be long and powerful, perfect for a reef or point, but at a sandbar, it might just close out. It's a standout for the big-wave crew, but everyone else, sit this one out.

The middle of the week is poor. Wednesday through to the end of the month has a lot of cross-onshore winds and messy conditions. The swell drops off, and there's nothing worth paddling out for.

Friday, August 28th offers a little hope. The morning session has a clean 1.5m S swell at 12 seconds. The wind is light and offshore, making for a clean, fun day. It's not big, but it's a solid, consistent option for an intermediate surfer looking for a cruise.

Then we hit a massive dry spell. The weekend of the 29th and 30th is junk, and the first week of September is a total loss. The wind is howling, and the swell is either too big or too small and onshore.

Saturday, September 5th is a total surprise. The morning is glassy with a 1.5m SSW swell. The energy is a light 591, but the conditions are perfect. It's a small, clean, fun day for a longboard or a fish. It's nothing huge, but after the drought, it's a welcome sight.

So, to wrap it up: the standout is Friday, August 21st morning for the experienced crew. The big-wave freaks need to look at Tuesday, August 25th morning, but know your limits. For a fun, clean surf, Friday, August 28th morning and Saturday, September 5th morning are your best bets. There's a long gap of nearly a week of no surf at all in between.

Rusty, over and out.
