The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look ahead at what Oyster Bay is serving up. Right off the bat, I gotta say, the water temp is a serious talking point – we’re looking at 58°, which is a whopping 8° colder than normal for this time of year. That is very unusual, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The pattern for the next couple of weeks is pretty challenging. We kick things off clean and calm on Wednesday the 19th, but the swell is just too powerful for this sandbar setup. We’re talking a solid 10ft SW swell with a combined energy reading of 2646, making it a strong, beefy swell. The wind is glassy in the morning, which is a major positive, but the size makes it a no-go for a safe session. That afternoon, the wind picks up and the conditions turn poor.
Thursday the 20th brings even more energy – up to 5719 – from the SW, but the cross-onshore wind is messy, and the swell is just way too big for this break.
Things start to look a little more realistic by Friday morning the 21st. The swell drops to a more manageable 8ft from the SW, the period is a long 12 seconds, and we get a light offshore breeze from the east. The water cleans right up. The combined energy is still moderate at 1644, but the sets will have a bit of punch. This is for experienced surfers only, though – over 7ft is pushing it for beginners.
From there, we hit a rough patch. Saturday the 22nd sees strong cross-onshore winds over 25 mph making a mess of a dropping swell. Sunday the 23rd is only marginal with cross-on winds, though that 8ft SW swell on Sunday afternoon has a long 14-second period and onshore wind, making it a tricky proposition.
A few more days of marginal conditions follow through Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, with light winds but continuing cross-onshore flow.
Now, Wednesday afternoon the 26th shapes up as a standout option. The swell is a nice 6ft from the SW, period at 13 seconds, and the wind goes clean offshore from the ENE. The combined energy is 1478, so there's plenty of grunt. With the long period, this SW groundswell will be hitting that sandbar cleanly. It's still solid, so it’s better for experienced surfers.
Thursday the 27th offers a small shot in the afternoon. The swell drops to 4ft from the S, wind goes light offshore from the east, and the water turns clean. It’s a smaller window, but a good one for a more relaxed paddle.
After that, the outlook turns grim. Strong winds flatten the swell completely through the end of August, with energy dropping to a weak 57 on the 29th. We see a spike in size on the 30th with a 8ft SW swell and strong offshore wind, but it's so windy that it’s not worth the paddle out. The first few days of September are a write-off with poor conditions and messy wind.
Overall, the standout here is Friday morning the 21st for the bigger, cleaner swell, and Wednesday afternoon the 26th as another solid call with good wind.
Rusty.
