The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a lean stretch for Arrawarra. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ve got a whole lot of nothing special on the table. The surf’s tiny and the wind’s all over the shop. You’ll be waiting a while for anything that really gets the heart pumping.
We kick off on Friday the 21st of August and it’s pretty grim. Cloudy skies, a weak 3ft easterly swell with a short 7-second period, and a cross-onshore wind from the NNW at 9 mph. Combined energy is only 95 – that’s weak. It’s a write-off. Saturday the 22nd sees a tiny 2ft swell in the morning, but the afternoon offers a brief window: glassy conditions with a 3ft wave from the NE. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Sunday the 23rd has a clean morning with a light offshore wind from the south, but the swell is still a paltry 2ft. Monday the 24th brings a 2ft, 11-second SSE groundswell – the period is decent, giving a bit of shape – and glassy winds in the morning. The combined energy picks up to 144 (moderate), but it’s still tiny. That’s about the best we’ve got early on.
Through the rest of the week into the end of August, it’s a messy story. Winds swing around, often onshore or cross-shore, and the swell hovers between 3ft and 3ft. Nothing clean enough to get excited about. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there.
The one standout, if you can call it that, comes on Monday the 31st of August. The morning shows a 4ft swell from the east with a 6-second period – short period, so the waves will be a bit lumpy and soft – but it’s glassy. That’s the biggest swell we see in the first week, and combined energy hits 167 (moderate). It’s not a classic, but it’s the best on offer.
Early September brings a change. On Tuesday the 1st, we get a 4ft east swell with a 7-second period and a strong offshore wind from the SSW at 16 mph – clean conditions, but the period is short and the energy is only 163. Then Wednesday the 2nd of September shows promise: a 3ft east swell with a 10-second period (good period, more push), combined energy of 245 (moderate-to-strong), and a clean cross-offshore breeze. That’s a solid window for Arrawarra, but still not huge.
Beyond that, the second week fades. Thursday the 3rd has a tiny 3ft, 10-second swell with glassy morning conditions, but that’s about it. The rest of the run into the 5th of September is small and clean enough for a cruise, with 2ft waves and offshore winds, but nothing to write home about.
Honestly, if you’re wanting a paddle, keep an eye on Monday the 31st of August morning for the biggest set of the period, or Wednesday the 2nd of September for the best combination of size, period, and clean wind. But even then, it’s not firing – just the best of a quiet run.
Rusty.
