The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this stretch of coast like a hawk. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s some real fire waiting for us later on. Let’s get into it.
First up, Arrawarra. This is a point break that’s fairly consistent but it’s best for the advanced crew – it gets powerful and can be a handful. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there. The next few days are a mixed bag, so don’t be in a rush.
Monday the 20th sees some lumpy cross-off wind with 8ft swell from the ESE, but the energy is chunky (1573) and the conditions are marginal – it’s a bit of a mess. Wait it out. Tuesday the 21st is a different story: morning glassy offshore conditions with 5ft E swell and clean, but the energy has dropped to 542. It’s a decent session, but nothing to write home about. Wednesday the 22nd is poor – cross-on and onshore wind, tiny waves. Thursday the 23rd morning is glassy but the swell is down to 3ft E with weak energy (129) – surfable but ordinary.
The real standout window starts to shape up from Saturday the 25th. Saturday morning is glassy, 3ft SSE swell with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, with moderate energy (307). It’s clean, and the point will handle that long period nicely. Sunday the 26th morning is the best of the first week: offshore wind, 4ft SSE swell, period of 13 seconds (very long), and energy climbing to 535. The point will be running with good shape and clean lines. This is your pick for the first week.
Then we hit a dry patch. Monday the 27th through to Wednesday the 29th is all poor surf – tiny, onshore, weak. It’s a miserable few days, but hang in there.
Thursday the 30th morning brings a surprise: glassy conditions, 5ft SSE swell with energy at 459, and it’s clean. This is a nice little reprieve, but the real explosion is coming.
Friday the 31st of July is the standout of the entire outlook. Morning offshore wind, 8ft SSE swell with a 14-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell, and the energy is massive at 2094. This is excellent surf, but it’s over 8ft, so only for the experienced crew. The point will handle the long period beautifully, offering long, powerful walls. The afternoon holds clean cross-off conditions with 8ft swell and similar energy (2086). This is the session to aim for.
Saturday the 1st of August is still pumping, with a fresh offshore wind in the morning and 7ft SSE swell, but the energy is down to 1135 and the crowds are likely to be thick at this point. It’s still solid, but a step down from Friday. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a risk of thunderstorms and onshore wind.
Sunday the 2nd and Monday the 3rd see the swell dropping but staying clean, with offshore winds and moderate energy in the 600 range. By Tuesday the 4th, we’re down to 4ft SE swell and light winds, a decent way to finish the run.
So, if you’re asking me, the absolute best is Friday the 31st of July – that’s the one. Sunday the 26th morning is a close second for the first week. Just be ready for the crowds at Arrawarra, they can be a problem when it’s good.
Rusty.
