The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Arrawarra. First thing you need to know: it’s a lean start. The next week is pretty flat and messy, so don’t get too keen.
The first real chance of a wave that’s worth paddling out for kicks off on the morning of Sunday, the 30th of August. We’ve got a 6 ft swell rolling in from the SE, with a short period of just 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 331. Morning winds are light and cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean, but that short period means the waves will be a bit fat and weak—not the best shape. Still, it’s surfable and the best thing we’ve seen for a while. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Now, the real standout comes on Saturday the 5th of September. This one is a proper event. The swell jumps to a solid 10 ft from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is massive at 1568. This is a strong, powerful swell. Winds are offshore from the SSW, blowing at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean. This is only for experienced surfers—that size will be too much for beginners. The waves will have plenty of grunt, and with offshore wind, the point at Arrawarra should be firing, offering some proper shaped-up waves. It will be a full-on session. Crowds are likely here, as it’s often busy at Arrawarra.
The day after, on Sunday the 6th of September, the swell drops to 4 ft and the energy fades right back, so Saturday is definitely the one to aim for.
To sum it up: sit through the flat and ordinary stuff this week. Sunday the 30th will get you wet but nothing special. The big winner is Saturday the 5th of September—big, clean, powerful swell for the experienced crew. That’s your day.
Rusty.
