The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Arrawarra’s got cookin’ for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be honest with ya, it’s a slow start. The first few days are pretty average with small, weak swell and iffy winds, so we’re waiting for the real action to show up. There’s a big gap of mediocre conditions until we finally see something worth paddling out for.
The first sign of life comes on Wednesday afternoon, August 19th. The swell bumps up a little to 5ft from the ESE, and the period stretches out to a nice 10 seconds. The wind goes light cross-offshore, and the water’s a pleasant 67° which is pretty normal for this time of year. The wave energy is moderate at (438). It’s not huge, but for a quiet midweek session, it’s the first decent window.
Then we hit a long, flat and choppy stretch from Thursday the 20th all the way through to Saturday the 29th. There’s barely any swell over 3ft, and when there is, the wind is either onshore or cross-on. A few mornings like Saturday the 22nd and Wednesday the 26th go glassy, but the swell is tiny at 2-2ft. Not much to get excited about, honestly.
The real standout, and the one you want to circle on your calendar, is Sunday morning, August 30th. This is the pick of the whole outlook. Arrawarra sees a solid 6ft pulse from the NE with a short period of 7 seconds, but the combined energy jumps right up to (677), which is a strong, punchy little swell. The wind goes glassy from the SSW, so you’re looking at clean, smooth faces. It’s a point break that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the east, so when that NE swell hits with no wind, it’s going to be absolutely pristine. Just be aware, crowds are often here, so get out early if you want a peak to yourself. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s getting a bit sizey for beginners, but for the advanced crew, this is the session.
After that, we get into the first few days of September with a strong, persistent SSW offshore flow. Monday the 31st morning has clean 4ft surf from the E with a fresh offshore at 19 mph, and the energy is strong at (460). The wind stays offshore right through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, with 3ft surf and moderate energy around (265). The conditions will be clean and offshore, but the swell is a little smaller and the winds are pretty fresh, so it’s more for the dedicated surfer than a casual paddle.
So to wrap it up: the best surf on offer is Sunday, August 30th with that glassy, 6ft NE swell. The week after has consistent offshore winds but smaller waves. The long flat spell in between is a bit of a bummer, but that Sunday morning makes it all worth it.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
