The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s run through what’s headed for Arrawarra over the next couple of weeks.
First off, don’t get your hopes up for this weekend. The swell is building, but it’s coming from a tricky angle with a short period, and the wind is gonna be howling. Friday morning, July 17, we’ve got 8ft of lumpy SE swell at just 7 seconds, and a fresh SSE breeze making it cross-off. It’s messy, and the energy is only moderate (594). Not worth getting wet. That afternoon and into Saturday, the swell pushes up to 8ft and then 10ft, with periods stretching to 8 and 9 seconds, but the wind stays strong—25 to 35 mph—and it’s either offshore or cross-off. The energy gets up there (792 then 1595), but it’s gonna be a battle. This is expert-only territory, and honestly, with that much wind and a short-period swell, it’s looking more like a kite session than a paddle session. Sunday’s even bigger, 12ft, but still cross-off and short period. Not the clean, lined-up waves we want.
Monday July 20 settles a bit—8ft of E swell, 10-second period, and a moderate SE breeze. The energy is still solid (1151), but it’s cross-off. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The real standout window opens up on Tuesday July 21. Tuesday morning is glassy—I mean dead flat calm, 3 mph SSE wind, glass. The swell has dropped to 5ft from the east, still a 10-second period, and the energy is moderate (519). The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions,” and I’m calling it: that’s the best morning of the first week. Clean, consistent, and the crowd factor? Arrawarra is a point break that can get “often” busy, but with these conditions, it’ll be worth jostling for a wave. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
After Tuesday, it drops off. Wednesday and Thursday are small, poor, and onshore—4ft and 3ft with NE wind. Not worth it.
Then we get a second pulse. Friday July 24 morning brings 7ft of SSE swell, 8 seconds, and a fresh S offshore wind. The afternoon is the real gem: 8ft, SSE direction, 9-second period, and a moderate offshore breeze. The energy jumps to 1056, and the forecast says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” That’s the standout of the whole forecast. It’s a solid, clean, powerful swell with offshore winds at a point break that loves an east swell. This is the one to circle.
Saturday July 25 keeps it going with 6ft of SSE swell, an 11-second period, and a light SSW offshore. Glassy again in the morning. Very clean. Another good day. Sunday July 26 holds 7ft to 8ft from the south, with moderate offshore winds and solid energy (992 to 1912). It’s still good, but the wind picks up a bit.
The following week, from Monday July 27 through to Thursday July 30, the swell slowly fades—5ft down to 2ft. The winds are mostly offshore or cross-off, so it stays clean, but the energy drops from moderate (588) to weak (93). There are a few surfable mornings, but nothing to get excited about. Then, on Friday July 31 and Saturday August 1, we see a new pulse of 5ft SSE swell with a long 12-second period and light offshore winds. That’s promising, but it’s a long way out—over a week away—so keep an eye on it, but don’t book your flights yet.
To sum it up: the best surf on offer is Tuesday July 21 morning for a glassy, clean, moderate swell, and then Friday July 24 afternoon for the biggest, cleanest, most powerful surf of the whole 16 days. The rest is either too windy, too small, or too far off to trust.
Rusty out.
