The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. This is Rusty, and I'm looking at the only game in town for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, we’ve got a solid pulse of energy coming in, but it’s not going to be an easy ride. The forecast starts on Sunday, July 19, and honestly, it’s a battle. We’ve got a big, powerful swell – think 16ft of SE swell with a 10-second period – but it's getting hammered by a strong SSE wind at 19 mph. The combined energy is massive, sitting at 4926, but the conditions are lumpy and cross-shore. It’s a real shame because the power is there, but it’s going to be messy. Sunday afternoon is pretty much the same story, just a touch smaller at 15ft. This is not a day for the faint of heart; it’s advanced territory only, and even then, it’s a wrestling match.
Monday and Tuesday are a write-off for anyone looking for anything clean. The wind stays onshore or cross-shore, and the quality drops right off. The swell is still there, but it’s just chop.
Now, here’s the bright spot. Wednesday morning, July 22, the wind finally gives us a break. It goes completely glassy, with a light offshore from the north. The swell drops to a much more manageable 6ft from the east, with a 9-second period. The combined energy is still solid at 469. This is the window. Black Rock is a reef, and with clean conditions, even a smaller swell like this will have some nice lines. It’s not going to be huge, but it will be clean. For a more advanced spot, the glassy conditions are a major positive. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We get a bit more of that clean, cross-off swell on Thursday morning, July 23, with a 5ft ENE swell. It’s good, but it’s surfable, not a standout.
After that, the surf fades into a long, flat spell. From Friday, July 24, all the way through to the end of the month, we’re looking at tiny waves – under 3ft – and generally poor conditions. That’s a solid week of nothing to get excited about.
Then, just when you think it’s over, the forecast throws a curveball. On Friday, July 31, the afternoon shows a sudden jump back to a 10ft SE swell with a 7-second period. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’s clean. The combined energy pops back up to 802. But the real gem is Saturday, August 1. The morning session is looking excellent. We’ve got a 10ft SE swell, period up to 8 seconds, and light, cross-off wind. The energy is strong at 1337. This is for experienced surfers only – that’s a big, powerful wave on a reef break. It’s a long way out, so keep it in the back of your mind, but it’s a promising one. The afternoon on Saturday turns onshore, so that morning window is the one.
So, the pick of the week is Wednesday morning, July 22, for some clean, glassy reef waves. But the real standout, the one that’s got me talking, is the morning of Saturday, August 1. Keep an eye on that one.
Rusty.
