The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line.
We’re looking at Black Rock, a classic advanced reef break that’s exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is about average for this time of year – nothing wild there.
Honestly, the first week is a bit of a slow grind. The waves are small, mostly under 3 feet, and the energy is weak, sitting around 80 to 129 in the combined energy department. There’s a couple of glassy moments on the Saturday morning the 22nd and Sunday morning the 23rd with 3 ft swell from the ENE, but the period is short at 7-8 seconds, so those waves will be a bit lumpy and weak. Not much to write home about.
Thursday morning the 27th is the first real standout. We’ve got 5 ft of ENE swell, the period finally stretches to 8 seconds, the wind is a cross-off from the SSW, and the combined energy jumps to 306 – that’s moderate energy. It’s clean, and while it’s not huge, for an advanced reef setup, that’s going to be the best of the early period.
After that, we get a bit of a lull, but the real gem shows up on Wednesday morning the 2nd of September. The swell is a consistent 3-4 ft from the E, the period bumps up to 10 seconds, and it’s glassy with a light easterly breeze. The energy is solid at 219, and the conditions are clean. That’s the pick of the whole forecast for a long, smooth session on the reef.
Thursday morning the 3rd of September is also promising – 3-4 ft from the ENE, 10-second period, cross-off wind from the NNW, and clean. It will be fun, but Wednesday morning has the edge for the glass.
Later in the second week, Saturday morning the 5th of September gives us 3 ft with a clean cross-off, but the energy dips to 151, so it’s a smaller, less powerful option.
The big takeaway: if you’re an experienced surfer, Wednesday the 2nd of September is your window. The glass, the period, and the direction all line up. Thursday the 27th is your best bet in the near term. Everything else is small and average, but it won’t stay flat for long.
Rusty.
