Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Black Rock has in store for us down the line.
Right off the bat, it’s looking pretty bleak for the next few days. We’ve got a long quiet spell. Saturday July 4th and Sunday July 5th offer nothing worth paddling out for – tiny swell, messy winds, and just ordinary conditions. Monday and Tuesday are much the same, so don’t bother.
Then, on Wednesday July 8th, things go absolutely mental. The morning brings a solid 10ft south-easterly groundswell, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s serious wave energy – we’re talking about 1825 units of power pouring into this exposed reef. This is a proper expert-only day. The swell will be pushing straight in from the SE, with a light cross-off breeze from the SW keeping it relatively clean. If you’ve got the skills and the nerve, this is the standout of the whole run. Water temp is sitting right on 71°, which is bang average for this time of year.
Unfortunately, that Wednesday afternoon drops back down into the weeds. Thursday and Friday (July 9th–10th) have absolutely no swell at all – a total flat spell for two days straight.
Saturday July 11th is a no-go with tiny knee-high leftovers, and Sunday July 12th is a tease: the swell is only 2ft from the SE, but the wind goes glassy in the morning. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
The following week stays uneventful until Sunday July 19th. That morning brings a 5ft SE groundswell, period 11 seconds, with moderate energy (607). It’s a bit more manageable than that big pulse earlier in the month, but still a strong swell. Winds are cross-off from the SW, so the face should hold up nicely. It’s not quite the beast of July 8th, but it’s the second best bet in this 16-day window.
So, if you’re an experienced surfer and you can handle a solid reef break, circle Wednesday July 8th on your calendar. That’s the one. For everyone else, wait until July 19th for something a little more forgiving.
Rusty.
