Blackfellows Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here with the lowdown on the local surf. We’ve only got one spot on the radar: Blackfellows (reef and point). It’s a heavy, advanced wave, and the first part of the outlook is a bit of a dud, but there’s a solid run of quality surf coming later.

The early days are a write-off. From Sunday the 2nd through the weekend of the 8th, it’s messy with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy surf. The best you’ll get is a couple of ‘marginal’ sessions around Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th. Tuesday the 4th is the only decent moment in the first week: a morning of gentle cross-offshore breeze and clean 3ft SSW swell, turning glassy in the afternoon with 4ft swell. The combined energy is moderate (617–724), and the water temp is about average for this time of year. It’s small but clean, and the long period (15 seconds) will give it some shape on the reef. Expect crowds here sometimes.

Then it gets ugly again. From the 5th to the 11th, the wind turns back onshore, the swell jumps to 7–13ft, but it’s all blown out or way too big for the conditions. Sunday the 9th has a 10ft onshore swell with a near gale – that’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle surfing.

Now, here’s where it gets good. The real standout is Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th. Thursday morning at Blackfellows you’ve got a solid 6ft SSW swell, clean offshore wind from the ESE, and the combined energy is moderate (1027). It’s excellent for experienced surfers, and the 13-second period gives it proper grunt. Friday the 14th morning is even better: 8ft SSW swell, light offshore breeze from the east, and a long 17-second period. The energy is strong (3128). This is the best on offer – a proper groundswell with clean conditions. The reef will handle that long period nicely, so the waves will hold their shape. This is an advanced spot, so don’t paddle out if you’re not ready.

The run continues into the weekend of the 15th and 16th, with clean cross-offshore winds and swell in the 5–7ft range Saturday and Sunday. It’s consistent, good quality, but the Friday morning is the standout. By Monday the 17th, it drops back to a 3ft SSW swell, clean but small.

So here’s the bottom line: the first week is a slog, but from the 13th to the 16th, Blackfellows is firing for those who know what they’re doing. Be patient, keep an eye on the wind, and don’t sleep on that Friday the 14th morning session.
