The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the stretch ahead at Blackfellows. It’s a reef and point setup, so it’s got that extra bit of shape and structure, but don’t get too excited just yet. We’re looking at a solid week of sulky, blown-out conditions before the ocean gets its act together. The water is sitting at 60°F right now, which is about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.
The first week is a write-off. From Saturday the 8th right through to Thursday the 13th, it’s a mess. Cross-onshore winds, lumpy, choppy, and mostly poor surf. The swell is there, but it’s a bit of a dirty south-southwest groundswell with periods around 15-16 seconds, and the wind is just trashing it. On Sunday the 9th, the wind actually hits near gale force with gusts up to 34 mph, and the swell jumps to 12 ft. That’s not surf; that’s a washing machine. The combined wave energy on that one is a massive 4310, but it’s absolutely useless. This spot is for advanced surfers only when it’s good, and right now, it’s a no-go for anyone.
The tide and wind finally start to back off on Thursday the 13th, but it’s still only marginal. The real turning point hits on Friday the 14th. That morning, the wind shifts to a light cross-offshore breeze from the southeast at 6 mph, and the swell is a solid 8 ft from the SSW with a 17-second period. The energy is pumped up to 3275, and the conditions are clean. This is where it gets interesting. The wave comment says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and that’s the truth. It’s a stand-out window. The point break nature of Blackfellows will handle that long-period groundswell beautifully, drawing out those lines. Saturday the 15th keeps the run going with offshore winds from the east on the morning, a 6 ft SSW swell, and clean conditions. That’s your best bet for the whole forecast – a proper clean session with decent size.
Sunday the 16th settles down a bit with a 5 ft swell, but it stays clean with light offshore winds. By Monday the 17th, we’re looking at a 4 ft swell and glassy conditions in the afternoon. It’s smaller, but still fun. The second week has some other promising windows, especially around Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st, with cross-offshore winds and 7 ft to 8 ft swell. But the wind is a bit stronger, so the first stand-out is definitely the Friday the 14th session. It’s a long wait, but it’ll be worth it.
