The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at Mullaway.
Mate, it’s a bit of a tough stretch ahead for Mullaway. This is a point break that’s pretty exposed, so it needs the right direction and swell energy to fire, and the forecast is looking a bit mixed. We’ve got a real gap at the start: nothing worth paddling out for from Saturday, August 22, right through to the middle of the following week. The water temp is sitting right around 68°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Monday, August 24, in the morning. The swell is small, around 2 ft from the south, but the wind is glassy – that’s a big tick for clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate at 141, and the period is a short 11 seconds, so not a lot of push. It’s surfable but very ordinary. By Monday afternoon, conditions get messy with a cross-onshore breeze and rain showers, so that window is narrow.
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, August 25 and 26, offer some clean, cross-off wind conditions, with swell around 2 ft to 3 ft from the ENE. The energy is low to moderate (103 and 111), and the period is short (7-8 seconds). It’s pretty average, but the clean conditions make it worth a look if you’re desperate. The afternoons get blown out with a strong cross-onshore, so don’t bother.
Thursday, August 27, sees a bit more size – 4 ft in the morning, 3 ft in the afternoon – but the wind is cross or cross-onshore and the energy is moderate at 209-226. The surf is messy and choppy. Not great.
Friday, August 28, morning is a standout for clean conditions. The swell is 3 ft from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds, but the wind is glassy. Combined energy is moderate at 163. It’s a small, clean, glassy session – a good one for the log or a fun fish if you’re keen. The afternoon turns onshore, so get out early.
The weekend of August 29-30 is a write-off. Moderate cross-shore winds, small messy swell, and poor surf conditions across the board.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting for the confident crew. On Monday, August 31, the morning brings a standout pulse: 5 ft from the south, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 691. The wind is light cross-shore, so it’s a bit lumpy but manageable. That’s the biggest swell of the period, but it’s still a bit short-period and messy. It’s marginal tide conditions, so it’s more for the advanced crew. Afternoon drops off fast.
Tuesday, September 1, morning is clean with a cross-off wind, but the swell is only 2 ft from the east. Energy is moderate at 197. It’s a small clean day, nothing special.
The next few days are quiet, with tiny swell and poor conditions. Then, on Sunday, September 6, the morning offers the best prospect of the whole stretch. The swell is 5 ft from the south, period is short at 6 seconds, but the wind is cross-off and clean. Combined energy is a strong 251. The model says “expect good surf conditions”. That’s the one to mark on the calendar. It’s not huge, but it’s the cleanest, strongest swell of the run. The afternoon turns to cross-shore and messy, so morning is the window.
The best on offer is the Sunday, September 6, morning session. It’s the cleanest, most energetic swell period. The Monday, August 31, morning is a close second for size, but the wind isn’t as clean. For a point break like Mullaway, you want that clean, cross-off or offshore wind, and the Sunday morning has it. The water is still around normal temps, and the crowds are likely to be “often” at this spot, but with the conditions being a bit average overall, you might find a few less bodies out.
No massive standouts, but if you’ve got a board for clean, small-to-medium conditions, the Sunday, September 6, morning is your best bet.
