G’day, Rusty here, looking at the next couple of weeks for us. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s a serious pulse of energy building for the middle of next week that’s got my full attention.
We kick things off this Friday morning at Mullaway with small 3ft swell from the ENE, period is short at 7 seconds. The water’s sitting at 69°, which is pretty much average for this time of year. The conditions are clean, but the energy is weak (95). It’s surfable but nothing to get excited about. Winds are light through the afternoon, and the swell sticks around at 3ft, but the energy ticks up just a touch (108). Still very ordinary.
Saturday morning shows some improvement: 4ft from the S with an 8-second period and moderate energy (362). Winds are cross-off, which keeps it clean, and the call says “expect good surf conditions.” This is a bit better, but the afternoon drops right off to a tiny 2ft with poor conditions. Not worth waiting for.
Sunday brings a bit more size – 4ft from the S in the morning with 9-second period (257 energy), but the wind is a moderate breeze. The afternoon jumps to 6ft from the SSE, but it’s short period (7 seconds) and the wind is fresh at 22 mph, knocking it around. The energy is moderate (480), but the quality is poor.
Now, Monday starts to get interesting but messy. Monday morning sees 8ft from the SSE at 9 seconds, with strong energy (1097). The cross wind is fresh, though, creating lumpy cross-chop. This is advanced territory – 8ft is too big for beginners. The afternoon stays solid at 7ft (1132 energy) with the same lumpy cross-shore mess.
Here’s where we get our standout. Tuesday, July 7th is the pick of the entire outlook. The morning delivers 10ft from the SSE with a 10-second period and very strong energy (2776). Winds are cross-off and a moderate breeze, keeping the face clean. This is big, powerful groundswell – definitely expert-only at this size. The afternoon holds at 10ft with a longer 11-second period (3511 energy), though the cross wind adds a bit of chop. For the experienced crew, this is a proper day.
Wednesday the 8th remains solid with 8ft SSE swell, 11-second period, and very strong energy (2745). Winds stay cross-off and clean in the morning. The size drops to 7ft in the afternoon.
Thursday the 9th morning is a real treat – glassy conditions, 6ft from the SE at 10 seconds (836 energy). That’s a clean, quality wave for those who can handle the size. The afternoon turns onshore, so get out early.
Friday the 10th winds down with a nice 4ft from the SE (322 energy) and clean cross-off wind in the morning. Saturday the 11th has a glassy 4ft from the SSE (412 energy) – a lovely clean morning session.
After that, the swell fades hard. From Sunday the 12th through to Friday the 17th of July, we’ve got a long flat spell. Tiny 1.0ft to 2ft waves with weak energy. The wind stays fresh and cross-off, but there’s simply no power. The water will still be around average temp, but you’d be wasting your time.
Then on Saturday the 18th, we see a late pulse – 6ft from the SSW at 9 seconds (706 energy) in the morning, building to 7ft from the SSE in the afternoon. Winds are moderate and cross, so it’s a bit lumpy. A possible session for the keen, but that Tuesday the 7th is the real deal.
Best on offer: Tuesday, July 7th – Mullaway with a big 10ft SSE groundswell of very strong energy, clean cross-off winds, and a period up to 11 seconds. This is for experts only. Honourable mention to the glassy Thursday the 9th morning for cleaner but smaller conditions.
Stay safe, and don’t sleep on that Tuesday.
Rusty.
