The Lowdown
Alright, let's have a look at what Old Man Winter’s sending our way.
Well, mate, it’s gonna be a bit of a slow burn for the next week or so at Mullaway. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing to get excited about through to the end of August, with only tiny, weak slop and ordinary conditions. The water temp is sitting at about 68°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, no surprises there.
For the first week, from Wednesday the 19th through to Monday the 31st of August, it’s pretty grim. There’s a pocket on Thursday morning the 20th where you might get a cheeky little 4ft swell from the ESE, period a short 7 seconds, and light cross-offshore NNW wind, but the overall energy is weak (196). The crowd factor at Mullaway can be an issue, and with surf that small, it’ll be a scrap for scraps. A couple of mornings, like Saturday the 22nd, see a glassy surface but only 2ft of swell. That’s honestly not worth the wax.
Then, around the 31st of August into early September, things start to get interesting. A proper pulse of long-period groundswell shows up. Monday the 31st sees the energy ramp up with a 5ft SSE swell at 11 seconds, but it’s cross-onshore. The energy is building, though, with readings of 549 (Monday morning) and 641 (Monday afternoon). But the real standout is Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a 8ft SSE swell in the morning, period 14 seconds, building to a solid 12ft from the S in the afternoon, period 13 seconds. The combined energy is immense – 2851 in the morning and a whopping 6735 by the afternoon. This is serious groundswell, and for a point break like Mullaway, that long period can mean beautiful, lined-up waves, but it also means the sets will be widely spaced. This is expert territory for sure; beginners need to steer well clear of anything over 8ft.
Now, the wind on Tuesday isn’t perfect – it’s cross-onshore from the NE – so the quality will be a bit lumpy. But hold on. Wednesday the 2nd of September brings a real wildcard. The morning is a write-off with heavy rain and 16 mph cross-onshore winds, but the afternoon? Glassy conditions. Dead calm. A 7ft SSE swell at 12 seconds, with a very strong energy reading of 1381. That’s the one to lock in. Excellent surf for experienced surfers, clean and powerful.
If you can wait, the standout is definitely Wednesday afternoon, September 2nd, at Mullaway. Glassy conditions with a solid, long-period SSE swell. That’s the session you want to be in the water for. The earlier big days on the 1st will be for the chargers only, and the wind isn’t doing them any favours.
Rusty.
