The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve been staring at the charts for Mullaway and I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a real mixed bag, with a lot of waiting.
We’re starting off slow. The first real chance to even get a wet suit on is Monday the 24th of August, but it’s a bit of a tease. You’ll find some small, surfable waves at Mullaway, about 2ft from the SSE. The real story is that NE wind is glassy in the morning, giving you clean conditions. But the energy is weak (125), so don’t expect much punch. It’s ordinary, but it’s a start.
Through the rest of the week, it’s a struggle. The wind is all over the shop – cross, cross-on, onshore – and the swell stays tiny and messy. The water is sitting at 68°, which is about average for this time of year, so no nasty surprises. Wednesday the 26th morning has a light offshore wind from the W, keeping it clean with 3ft of ENE swell, but the energy is still low (86) and the period is short (7s). It’s a window, but nothing to get excited about.
Then we hit a bit of a gap. Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are mostly poor, but Friday morning does show a little pulse with 3ft from the SSE and a cross-off wind from the NW. The energy is starting to build (194), and the period stretches to 9s, which is a sign of life. It’s a clean, surfable wave, but still very ordinary.
Now, here’s the one that gets my heart pumping. Hold onto your board for Monday the 31st of August. The morning is looking like the standout of the whole outlook. This is for experienced surfers only. We’ve got a solid 6ft of SSE groundswell rolling in with a very long period of 17 seconds. The energy is massive (1729), and the wind is glassy from the N. The water is still about average. This is proper, powerful groundswell – the kind that will line up nicely at a point break like Mullaway. The long period means longer gaps between sets, which makes paddling out a bit easier, but the sets themselves will have serious punch. It’s a little over a week away, so keep an eye on it, but this is the one to plan for.
After that, the swell drops back quickly. Tuesday the 1st of September has a clean cross-off wind from the NW, with 3ft from the SSE. The energy is still decent (348) and the period is 13s, so it’s a good, clean option for a session, but nothing like the Monday. The rest of the first week of September is back to small, weak, and onshore. There’s a brief pick-up on the morning of Friday the 4th with 1ft from the E, but it’s cross-off and clean – just a whisper.
Frankly, for the second week, the outlook is dry. There’s a few mornings with clean, cross-off winds and small waves, but the energy is weak and the swell is tiny. We’re talking about 2ft and 2ft through the 6th and 7th of September. It’s a surfable lull, but that’s about it.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a waiting game. The one true standout is Monday the 31st of August morning. That’s your big, powerful, clean session. The rest is just a matter of scratching around for small, clean windows. Keep it salty.
Rusty.
