The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. It's a quiet stretch for the Coffs Coast at the moment. We've got a fair gap of nothing special before some real promise shows up on the horizon. Things are looking pretty ordinary for the first week or so, but keep your eyes peeled for the first week of September.
Mullaway is a solid point break that's fairly consistent, but it's a tricky one for most of the run. The water temp is sitting right on average for this time of year, at 68°F, nothing unusual there. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate, with values mostly in the two-digit range early on.
For the first several days, through the end of August, the surf is just not there. We're looking at small, weak swells, mostly under 3ft, with periods around 7 to 8 seconds. The winds are all over the place, mostly cross or cross-off, but the wave heights are too small to get excited about. We'll see a bit of a bump on the morning of the 30th with a 5ft swell from the NE, but it's a short period groundswell, and the energy is only moderate (396). It's a marginal call, and the wind will be clean, but it's still not the standout.
The real action, if you can call it that, starts to build on the 1st of September. Tuesday morning the 1st is looking like the best of the bunch. We've got a 4ft swell from the east, 9-second period, with glassy conditions from a light NW wind. The combined energy is moderate (220) and the forecast is "expect good surf conditions". That's a solid morning for a paddle.
Then on the 2nd of September, the swell starts to pump up. Wednesday morning sees a 5ft east swell, 10-second period, and the energy jumps to 488 (moderate). The wind is light and cross, so it's not perfect, but it's clean. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 5ft, but the wind swings onshore. For the morning of the 4th of September, we get a clean 3ft east swell, 10-second period, with light cross-off winds. That's another good one to mark.
So, the standout is Thursday morning, 1st September at Mullaway. It's got a decent 4ft east swell, a clean 9-second period, and glassy winds. The energy is moderate (220) and conditions are forecast to be good. It's a long-range call, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but it's the best option on the table.
After that, the swell starts to drop off again. The 3rd and 4th of September have some ok windows, but the winds get messy in the afternoons.
Rusty.
