The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at this one spot for a while. The vibe is a bit of a waiting game, but there’s some light at the end of the tunnel.
Right off the bat, it’s a pretty grim start. We’ve got a solid 12 ft groundswell hitting the beach on the 19th, but with a screaming 22 mph cross-shore wind, it’s just a lumpy, blown-out mess. Not worth paddling out for. That energy is massive (2638) but it’s all for nothing. The water temp is 68°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance to get wet doesn’t come until Wednesday the 22nd. Early morning, the swell has dropped to a clean, cross-off 4 ft from the East. The wind is light out of the NNW, keeping it tidy. The combined energy (257) is only moderate, but it’s a clean window. Wednesday afternoon goes onshore and choppy again, so get out early.
The pattern for the next week or so is all about small, marginal surf. We’re talking ankle-to-knee high stuff for the most part. The water is still clean on Thursday the 23rd morning with glassy conditions, but the swell is barely 3 ft. You’ll be scratching for a wave. There’s a long stretch of days where the score is low, and the conditions are just ordinary.
The real standout, and the one that makes this whole outlook worth it, is coming up on Thursday the 30th of July. I know it’s a week away, but it’s a beauty. The swell is tiny, only 2 ft, but the wind is a clean offshore (WNW at 12 mph). The combined energy is weak (60), but that offshore wind will make those little waves stand up perfectly. Mullaway is a point break, so it handles that long period (8 sec) swell just fine. It’s a bit of a session for the longboard or a single fin, but it’s going to be glassy and all yours.
Then we get a little spike into early August. The morning of Saturday the 1st of August has a 4 ft swell from the SSE with a 14-second period, giving it some real poke (566 energy). The wind is cross-off, so it’s rideable. The real gem, though, is the Sunday morning of the 2nd of August. The swell is only 4 ft, but the wind is absolutely glassy. Combined energy (290) is moderate, and that glassy surface will make it smooth as silk. Get out there for the dawn patrol.
For the rest of the second week, it’s the same story: small swells, and the wind is either onshore or just so-so. The Friday the 31st of July morning has a clean 3 ft wave, but it’s nothing to write home about.
Standout pick: Without a doubt, the Thursday morning of the 30th of July is the best on offer. It’s tiny, but that offshore wind at Mullaway is going to be a session of pure, clean lines. The Sunday morning of the 2nd of August is a close second with that glassy 4 ft swell.
Overall, it’s a slow, quiet period. Don’t expect any big barrels, but if you’ve got a log and some patience, there are a few heavenly windows coming up.
Rusty.
