The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Mullaway, a point break that’s fairly consistent. Before we get into it, the water temp is sitting at 68°F, which is only 0.7°F cooler than average for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary – just your standard winter water.
Right now, there’s a bit of a rough patch. The first few days are looking pretty average. Wednesday afternoon the 15th has 7ft of SSE swell with a short 7 second period, and a strong 19 mph south wind blowing cross-shore, making it lumpy and messy. The energy is weak, sitting at 449. Not worth paddling out for. That continues through Thursday and Friday – the swell builds to 8ft, but the wind sticks around from the south and SSE, 19-25 mph, keeping it choppy and cross. The energy picks up (799 on Thursday morning, 930 on Thursday arvo), but the conditions are still poor.
The weekend doesn’t offer much relief. Saturday morning the 18th has 10ft of SE swell, 8 seconds, and 22 mph cross-shore wind – energy is 1177, moderate, but the wind is just too strong. Saturday afternoon jumps to 1553 energy, but still messy. Sunday the 19th sees the swell peak at 12ft from the ESE with a 10-second period, and 25 mph winds. That’s 2763 energy – strong – but it’s a cross-shore mess. Only for the brave, and even then, it’s not clean. The rating on Sunday morning is a zero, and Sunday arvo barely scrapes a 1. Not a weekend to get excited about.
Monday the 20th is still a write-off: 10ft early, 16 mph cross-on wind, and a score of zero. The energy is through the roof at 3128, but the wind is onshore and choppy. Monday afternoon drops to 8ft and 1285 energy, still marginal.
Now, Tuesday the 21st is where things start to look up. The morning has a 7ft east swell, 10-second period, and a light 6 mph SSW wind swinging cross-off. The energy is 846, moderate, and for the first time the comment says “expect very good surf conditions” with a score of 3. The wind is light, the swell direction (E) matches the optimum (ESE) closely, and it’s a point break so that long 10-second period will wrap in nicely. Crowds are often here, so you’ll have company, but the quality should be worth it. This is a standout window.
Wednesday the 22nd brings a glassy morning. Swell drops to 4ft from the east, 10 seconds, and the wind is glass – 3 mph from the south. Energy is 330, weak, but the conditions are clean. It’s a smaller day, but for a point break that’s fairly consistent, this glassy session is a real treat. The score is 2, and it’s good surf. The arvo turns cross-on, so hit it early.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are small and average – 4ft east swell, short periods, and mostly cross or cross-on winds. Not worth a mention. Saturday the 25th is tiny, 2ft. Sunday the 26th has a weird 1ft SSE swell with a very long 16-second period – energy 191, weak – and it’s clean but tiny. That long period will make it tricky at a beach break, but at Mullaway point it could produce a few clean lines if you’re patient. Still, it’s very small.
Monday the 27th is also small, 2ft. The next real standout comes on Wednesday the 30th of July. The morning offers 6ft of SSE swell with a great 12-second period, glassy conditions with 3 mph NW wind, and energy of 842, moderate. The comment says “expect very good surf conditions” with a score of 3. The swell direction (SSE) is not the optimum (ESE), but the period is long and the wind is glass – clean, lined-up waves on a point break. This is another window to mark on your calendar. The arvo turns cross-on, so get out early.
Overall, there’s a rough start, but the best of it is Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 30th. Both mornings offer clean conditions with decent swell. The rest of the window is either too windy, too small, or too messy to bother.
Rusty.
