The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s get into it. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our stretch of coast, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a waiting game for something that really gets the blood pumping. Keep your expectations honest.
We’re looking at a pretty long dry spell to kick things off. From now, right through the rest of the month and into the first week of September, the call is mostly poor surf. There’s a faint heartbeat on the 26th and 28th of August, but those are just ordinary, surfable waves – nothing to write home about. The real wait is for something special.
Alright, the standout window is shaping up for Saturday, the 5th of September. We’ve got a good sized pulse of swell arriving, with a few other options on offer, but this one takes the cake.
Mullaway (point) is your best bet, but mark my words, this is for the advanced crew only. On Saturday morning, the 5th of September, we’re looking at a solid 10 ft swell pushing in from the SSE. That’s a fair bit of water moving around, with wave energy reading a massive 1568, so that's very strong energy. The wind is coming from the SSW at a clean 12 mph, which is cross-offshore, so it’s blowing right down the face. That's going to make for some real clean, grinding walls. It’s a point break, so those long-period lines from the SSE will wrap in beautifully. Now, the crowds here are often an issue, and with waves of this size and quality, you can expect it to be packed. This is not a session for beginners; over 8 ft is expert territory.
The afternoon on Saturday the 5th will back off a touch to 8 ft from the SE, but the wind swings more cross-shore and gets a bit choppier. Still decent for the fellas who know what they're doing, but the morning window is where the magic is.
For the rest of that week leading in, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. On Friday the 4th of September, we get a one-off chance in the afternoon. The breeze goes glassy, with a 3 ft swell from the ENE. It’s only surfable and ordinary, but those glassy conditions are super rare in this outlook, so if you’re desperate, you might get a fun little slide.
Basically, sit tight through the end of August and the start of September. There’s nothing but poor conditions and small, messy swell until we get to that Saturday the 5th. If you’re an experienced surfer, that morning at Mullaway is the one to point your wheels towards. For everyone else, maybe wait for a smaller day.
Stay salty,
Rusty
