The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got on the cards.
Right, straight up, the outlook for the next couple of weeks is a bit of a mixed bag. The main player is Mullaway, a point break that’s fairly consistent and handles an easterly direction best. We’re not looking at any big, powerful swell, but there are a couple of windows that’ll offer up some clean, fun waves if you pick your mornings right.
The water’s sitting at about 68°F which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Things are quiet to start. Sunday afternoon the 23rd is a write-off – tiny 1ft cross-on slop with weak energy (86). You can forget about that.
The first proper chance comes on Monday morning the 24th. The wind goes glassy from the NNE, and we’ve got a 2ft SSE swell with an 11-second period. The combined energy is moderate (115). It’s not pumping, but it’s surfable and clean. You’ll be scratching for little runners, but it’s a start.
Tuesday and Wednesday are mostly messy with a cross-shore or onshore wind, but keep an eye on Wednesday morning the 26th. The wind swings to a light NW, blowing cross-offshore, cleaning up a 4ft ENE swell. The period is a short 7 seconds so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but the look is clean. A solid, if ordinary, morning.
Now, Friday morning the 28th is another one to pencil in. Glassy conditions early with a 3ft ENE swell, 8-second period, and the energy is building (188). This is one of those “ordinary but clean” windows where you can get a few without battling the wind.
The real standout in the first week is Saturday morning the 29th. This is the one. The wind goes glassy from the NE, we’ve got a 3ft SSE swell with a 10-second period, and the energy is solid (236). The forecast is for “good surf conditions.” The wind will be off, the banks should hold, and the point will most likely have some nice, clean lines. This is your best bet of the week. It’s not huge, but the quality will be there. Expect a few others out as this spot can get crowded.
Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st see a mix of decent energy but messier afternoon winds. Monday morning the 31st also has a glassy window with a 3ft SSE swell (212 energy), so if you missed Saturday, that’s another clean option.
Looking into the second week, things get a bit more interesting but also less certain. Tuesday morning the 1st of September has a long 17-second period groundswell coming in at 2ft from the SSE (295 energy). The wind is cross-off from the N. That long period at a point break like Mullaway could mean some very good, lined-up waves, but it’s a small swell. Wednesday morning the 2nd is similar, 2ft SSE on a 12-second period with a clean cross-off wind (202 energy). Both are good prospects for a glassy, early session.
The real long-range promise is the morning of Monday the 7th of September. We’ve got a 2ft SSE, 11-second swell with a cross-off wind from the NNW (156 energy). And the late session that afternoon looks even cleaner with a WNW wind, also cross-off. The second week standouts are these mornings from the 1st to the 2nd and the 7th – but remember, we’re a week or more out, so keep an eye on the charts.
Overall, the swell is never huge, but there’s enough consistent, clean windows for the patient surfer. Saturday morning the 29th is your blue-ribbon day. Get on it.
