The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down the surf at Mullaway.
The first few days are a write-off – big, messy swell and strong winds. You’ll be better off on the beach. Things clean up by Tuesday the 21st, and there’s a killer window later.
First decent chance is Tuesday morning, 21 July. Waves are about 5ft, from the east with a 10-second period. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the surface is clean. The energy is moderate (532). Mullaway is a point break, exposed to the swell, and that east direction lines up well for advanced surfers. Water temp is about normal for the season.
Wednesday morning, 22 July, is also good – smaller at 4ft, still east, with a light north-west cross-offshore breeze. Clean again, but with weaker energy (212). It’s a fun longboard session.
After a few small, choppy days, Friday the 24th brings a bump of 7ft from the south-southeast, but the cross-shore wind and moderate breeze make it choppy. Only marginal.
The real standout is Saturday morning, 1 August. Swell is 7ft from the south-southeast, with a 12-second period – a proper groundswell. The combined energy is strong (1434). The wind is glassy, light from the north-west, so the point will be clean and lined up. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and the best of the run. Crowds are often a factor, so get there early.
Friday afternoon, 31 July, shows a big 12ft south swell with a 12-second period, but the wind is light onshore, so quality is unknown. Could be a monster if the wind swings.
The rest of the second week is small and ordinary, with a few glassy mornings but not enough wave. The 30 July morning has a very long 17-second period from the south-southeast, but only 1ft – not enough to ride.
So, hang tight for Tuesday 21 July for clean waves, and circle Saturday 1 August for the real gem. Water temp is about average. Keep the wax warm.
Rusty.
