Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mullaway over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s shaking at Mullaway.
The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, with a few decent windows but plenty of ordinary days in between. The standout is a solid pulse of groundswell that hits on Thursday the 16th, but it comes with a serious side of wind, so you’ve gotta pick your moment.
We start off with a bit of swell from the south-southeast, but it’s a messy one. Thursday morning (9th July) has a 7ft swell from the SSE with a 10-second period, but a 15 mph SSW wind is keeping it cross-off. The energy is strong (1874), but the forecast says it’s marginal. By Thursday afternoon, the wind swings South and gets a bit cross, making it look choppy. Not a great start.
Friday the 10th is a step down in size, with a 6ft SE swell, but the wind is still a factor. Morning is cross-off from the South at 9 mph, keeping it clean, but the energy drops to 838. It’s surfable, but not the best.
Saturday the 11th is the first real bright spot. Early morning, we’ve got a 4ft swell from the SE, but the wind is light from the northwest at just 3 mph, which is cross-off and clean. Combined energy is 501, moderate. The report says “expect very good surf conditions,” so this is the one to circle. The swell period is 9 seconds, so it’s a solid mid-range wave. Crowds are often at Mullaway, so expect company.
Sunday the 12th drops right off, with a 3ft ESE swell and a light WNW wind in the morning, but the energy is down to 262. It’s clean, but small. By afternoon, it’s a 3ft swell with a cross-on wind from the SE, and it’s poor.
From Monday the 13th through to Wednesday the 15th, it’s tiny. Waves drop to 1.0ft to 2ft, with very low energy (14 to 74). Glassy conditions on Monday morning and Tuesday morning, and again on Wednesday morning, but there’s just no swell to work with. Not worth paddling out.
Now, Thursday the 16th brings a big change. Overnight, a strong 10ft groundswell from the SSE rolls in, with a 10-second period. The combined energy jumps to 1962. Thursday morning has a 12 mph SSW wind, cross-off, keeping it clean. This is the one to aim for, but be warned – this is only for experienced surfers. The 10ft size is pushing into expert territory, and the long period groundswell at a point break like Mullaway means it could link up nicely, but it’s powerful. By Thursday afternoon, the wind swings to SSE at 22 mph, and it becomes a lumpy, cross-on mess. Get in early.
Friday the 17th is a write-off. A massive 16ft SSE swell with a 12-second period, but the wind is howling 28 mph from the SSE, making it a messy, dangerous ocean. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. The energy is 11043 – very strong. Steer clear.
Saturday the 18th is still oversized and messy, with 12ft to 13ft swell and 25 mph winds from the SSE and S. Strong cross-shore chop. Not for surfing.
Things settle down a bit by Sunday the 19th. The swell drops to 7ft from the SE, with a 19 mph SSW wind, cross-off. The energy is 854, and it’s clean, but the wind is still fresh. Monday the 20th morning is the next decent call: a 5ft swell from the SE, with a light 9 mph SSW wind, cross-off and clean. Energy is 347. Good for a paddle.
The last few days of the forecast, from the 21st to the 24th of July, are small to tiny, with waves around 2ft to 4ft. The best of that is Tuesday the 21st morning, with a 3ft swell from the SE, glassy conditions under a light SW wind, and good energy for the size (206). Wednesday the 22nd morning also looks clean with a 4ft swell from the SSE and a light WSW wind.
The best on offer: Saturday the 11th morning is the top pick for the whole period. That clean 4ft swell with light offshore wind is going to be fun and well-shaped for a point break. For the bigger wave crew, Thursday the 16th morning is the standout, but it’s a beast and only for the experienced.
Water temp is around 68°, which is about normal for this time of year.
Signing off, Rusty.
