The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a stretch of ordinary to poor conditions to wade through. The first few days are a write-off, honestly. Swell is small and short-period, mostly around 4ft to 5ft from the ESE, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The water temp is sitting at 67°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The first real glimmer comes on Wednesday, 19th August, in the afternoon. Mullaway gets a pulse of swell from the ESE at 5ft with a period of 10 seconds—that’s a bit more groundswell energy, and the combined energy reading is 438, which is moderate. The wind swings light easterly and onshore, but the cross direction keeps it semi-clean. It’s still marginal, but it’s the first step up.
Things stay fairly flat and ordinary through the rest of that week. Thursday through Saturday are all small, weak, and wind-affected. There’s a small window on Sunday morning, 23rd August, with glassy conditions and a tiny 2ft swell from the ENE, but it’s really just a limp ankle-biter.
Now, the real standout comes at the end of the run. Saturday, 29th August, in the morning is the pick of the whole forecast. We’ve got a clean SSE swell at 3ft, period 8 seconds, and the wind is light SSW cross-offshore. The combined energy is 212—moderate—and the water is clean. Mullaway is a point break, so it handles that swell direction well, and with light offshore wind, it’ll be peeling nicely. Crowds are often here, so you might have some company, but the quality will be worth it. For more advanced surfers, this is the session to aim for.
The following days show a rising swell but with strong winds. Sunday, 30th August sees a 4ft to 5ft SSE swell, but the wind is 15–18 mph from the SSW and S, making it lumpy and cross. The combined energy hits 545 on Sunday afternoon—strong wave energy—but the wind kills any quality. By Monday, 31st August, the swell bumps up to 7ft from the SSE, but again, fresh winds from the SSW and S just trash it. That’s more of a kite-surfing scene than a clean paddle session.
Looking into the first week of September, Tuesday morning, 1st September, we’ve got a 5ft SSE swell with a 9-second period, clean cross-offshore wind from the south, and the combined energy is a whopping 773—very strong. The swell is pushing 5ft, which is still manageable for advanced surfers, but the period is short, so it’ll be a bit crumbly. Still, the clean conditions and solid energy make it a promising backup.
Overall, the best of the bunch is Saturday morning, 29th August. Get on it before the wind picks up. The rest is a grind, but that one session has your name on it.
Rusty.
