The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for Diggers. We’ve got a long stretch of small, average conditions ahead, but if you’re patient, there’s one clear standout window that’s worth circling on the calendar.
The coming week is pretty lackluster. From Sunday the 23rd through to Friday the 28th, we’re looking at swells that barely push past the 3ft mark. The energy is weak, with the combined swell energy mostly sitting in the double digits and low triple digits (36, 82, 125, 122, 102, 97, 86, 90, 93). A lot of these days are marked by poor or ordinary surf. There are a couple of mornings where the wind goes glassy, like Monday the 24th and Friday the 28th, but with such small, short-period waves, it’s not going to be worth paddling out unless you just want to get wet. The water temp is sitting at 67.5°F, which is pretty much spot-on average for this time of year.
The weekend of the 30th and 31st is where things start to get interesting. Saturday the 30th morning brings a noticeable bump – the swell jumps to about 4ft from the south with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy leaps to 567. That’s a solid moderate push. Winds are light and cross-offshore, so it should be clean. That’s a good session for a beginner, and the break is consistent, so there should be waves rolling through.
But the real standout is Monday the 31st of August, morning. This is the one you want to be awake for. The swell comes up to about 5.5ft from the south-southeast with a period of 17 seconds – that’s a proper long-period groundswell. Combined energy is a massive 1729, which is strong. Perfect timing on the low tide and a glassy, offshore wind with zero knots. The water will be clean, the sets will have some punch, and the long period will make for good shaped waves at this exposed break. Keep in mind, with a swell this size and the confidence of it being a week out, it’s promising but we should keep an eye on it. This is the best on offer. After Monday afternoon, the wind switches onshore and it gets messy, so don’t sleep in.
The first week of September is more of the same as the first few days – small, weak, and mostly poor. From Tuesday the 1st through to Monday the 7th, we’re seeing swells mostly under 3ft, with periods varying from 6 to 13 seconds. The energy is mostly in the low to mid triple digits (350, 343, 116, 86, 78, 68, 60, 277, 58, 126, 138, 121, 86, 87). There’s a bit of a bump on Friday the 4th afternoon with about 5.5ft, but it’s short-period windswell (6 seconds) and onshore – that’s messy, choppy, and not worth your time.
So, bottom line: the first week is quiet, and then there’s that one special window on Monday morning, the 31st. There’s a long gap after that with nothing on offer, so make the most of that day. It’s not often we see that kind of energy and those conditions line up. Stay stoked.
