The Lowdown
Alright, let's take a look at what's on offer for Diggers.
Right now, we’re in a bit of a flat spell. The first week is honestly pretty lackluster, with hardly anything worth getting wet for. The wind is a major problem, mostly onshore or cross-on, and the swell lacks any decent energy. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting around 43 to 93 (combined energy of all swells directed here) through the first weekend, and the waves are tiny and crumbly. You’re looking at a long run of poor conditions until things start to shift.
There’s a glimmer on the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. The wind goes light cross-offshore from the SSE, and the swell bumps up a touch to 4 ft from the ENE at 8 seconds. The energy climbs to 184 (combined energy of all swells directed here), and the surface cleans up nicely. It’s still nothing to write home about, but it’s the most surfable moment in that first stretch. The water temperature is pretty average for this time of year, so no wetsuit surprises there.
The real standout, and easily the best on offer across the whole 16 days, is the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. This is a big departure from the rest of the forecast. We get a solid 10 ft swell from the SSE, with a clean offshore wind from the SSW at 12 mph. The combined swell energy rockets up to 1568 (combined energy of all swells directed here). Now, for a break like Diggers, which is exposed to the swell and best with the wind from the SW, this setup is a potential dream. But, and it's a big but, 10 ft swell is a serious step up. This is strictly for experienced surfers only. Beginners and intermediates will be in way over their heads. Expect the crowd to be there too, as it’s often busy, and for good reason on a day like this. The swell period of 9 seconds is decent, giving the waves some punch without being too straight for this beach setup.
The afternoon of the same day still holds clean, surfable waves at 8 ft, though the energy drops a bit to 949 (combined energy of all swells directed here).
After that, conditions fade back to mediocrity. The following week looks like another run of small, wind-affected surf. The 6th of September morning offers a brief return to clean, small waves, but it’s nothing compared to that Saturday morning.
So, to be blunt: save your energy for the 5th of September. That morning is the one to circle on the calendar, but only if you’ve got the skills to handle a serious swell.
