The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Diggers. Let’s be straight with you – the first few days are a bit of a write-off for a normal paddle session. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there.
We start off with no real surf on Wednesday, July 15th, just a tiny 0.3 ft south swell with a very long 16-second period, but it’s all cross-offshore wind and the energy is weak (9). It’s a hard pass. The afternoon though, the swell jumps up to 7 ft from the SSE, and the combined energy gets moderate (514). The problem is, the forecast says it’s too big for this break, and with a 7-second period, it’s gonna be a messy, fat mess. The wind is a cross-off, but it’s a fresh breeze at 22 mph, so it’s not going to be clean.
Thursday, July 16th, is a similar story. Morning swell hits 8 ft from the SSE, energy is ramping up (768), but it’s still too big for Diggers. The 8-second period doesn’t help. Wind is a cross-off again, but it’s still a fresh breeze. The afternoon is the same size, just direction shifting to SE. Friday, July 17th, the swell drops to 6 ft, but the surf quality is rated as poor. It’s just not working here.
Saturday, July 18th, is a mixed bag. The morning has a 7 ft E swell, but it’s marginal. The afternoon, though, gets a 8 ft E swell with a 9-second period, and the energy goes through the roof (1667). That’s a strong pulse. But again, the data says it’s too big for Diggers, and the wind is a fresh cross-off. Sunday, July 19th, is the same deal – massive 12 ft swells from the ESE, energy is huge (2732 and 2543), but it’s just too much for this spot. Monday, July 20th, continues the trend with 10 ft and 8 ft swells, but it’s still too big.
Now, the tide starts to turn around Tuesday, July 21st. The morning sees a 6 ft E swell, and for the first time, the wind is offshore from the SW at 6 mph. The conditions are expected to be very good, and the energy is solid (794). That’s a clean window. The afternoon holds 6 ft, but the wind shifts to a light cross-shore, making it a bit more marginal.
Wednesday, July 22nd, is a real standout. The morning is glassy, with zero wind and a 5 ft E swell. The energy is moderate (443), and the conditions are expected to be good. This is the cleanest it’s going to get. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s a nice groundswell, but it’s a beach break so it might be a bit straight. You’ll want to be on it early. The afternoon goes cross-onshore, so the morning is the window.
Thursday, July 23rd, is another glassy morning. Swell drops to 4 ft, but with a light wind from the S and a 10-second period, it’s clean. The energy is weak (285), but for a fun, small wave session, it’s perfect. The afternoon is cross-shore, so less ideal.
The rest of the second week into late July stays small. Friday, July 24th, through Monday, July 27th, is mostly 3 ft to 6 ft E and ESE swells, with cross-off or cross-shore winds. The energy is mostly weak to moderate (200-500 range). The best bet in that stretch is probably Saturday, July 25th, morning with a 6 ft SSE swell and a gentle cross-off breeze, but the period is short at 7 seconds. It’ll be a bit lumpy. Tuesday, July 28th, also has a 3 ft ESE swell with a 10-second period, but it’s marginal.
The real standout in the whole 16 days is Wednesday, July 22nd, especially the morning. If you can get out there, it’s the cleanest, most user-friendly swell you’ll see. The other highlight is Tuesday, July 21st, morning with the offshore wind. After that, it’s a slow grind of small, clean but unremarkable waves.
For a break like Diggers, being a consistent spot, the blank run of stormy days at the start is a bummer, but it turns around. The long-range stuff in the second week is small but promising – just keep an eye on the wind.
Rusty.
