The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Diggers over the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you—it's a quiet stretch.
The overall pattern is dominated by small, weak swell for the entire 16-day window. The wave energy is low, with the combined energy of all swells mostly sitting in the double digits, often under 100 (95), and only occasionally nudging into the low 100s (144). Don't expect any kind of punch. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is about normal for the time of year.
We kick off Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd with nothing really worth paddling out for. Light winds and glassy conditions on Saturday morning give a false sense of hope, but with swell barely hitting 2 ft, it's just not doing anything.
Sunday the 23rd is a write-off. A bit of a bump from a southerly breeze, but the swell is tiny and messy. The wind is cross-off, which is a good sign for clean lines, but there's simply no energy to work with.
Monday the 24th is the first sliver of interest. We get a 2 ft, 11-second groundswell from the SSE. The period is decent, but the size is tiny. The combined energy is 144 (moderate), so there's a hint of push. The morning is glassy, making it the cleanest option of the entire outlook. If you're a longboarder or a beginner, this is your best bet for a fun, easy session. It's a consistent spot, so you'll get a few, but the crowds are likely.
The rest of the week is a blur of onshore winds and small, weak swell. The wind swings around from the north and northeast, ruining any chance of a clean wave. Conditions are "poor" or "very ordinary" right through to the end of August.
We get another glimmer on Monday the 31st of August. The swell bumps up to 4 ft from the east, but with a short period of 6 seconds, it's just windswell. The morning is glassy, so it'll be clean, but the waves will be soft and weak. The combined energy is 167 (moderate). It's a "surfable" option, but not a standout.
Looking ahead to the first week of September, the pattern continues. There's a bit of a pulse on the 2nd of September—a 3 ft, 10-second swell from the east with combined energy hitting 245 (moderate). The wind is cross-off from the SSW. This is the most powerful swell of the entire forecast, but it's still small. It's described as "marginal," which is fair.
The last few days of the outlook, the 4th and 5th of September, are flat and wind-affected. Nothing to get excited about.
The Call: There's no true standout here. If I had to pick the best on offer, it's the morning of Monday the 24th of August. The glassy conditions and that little groundswell bump will give you the cleanest, most fun waves for the beginner to intermediate surfer. The other slight possibility is the morning of Monday the 31st of August for a similar, glassy, but weaker session. For the rest of the 16 days, it's a case of "wait for the next system."
Rusty.
