The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Diggers. It’s a beginner-friendly spot that’s consistent, exposed to the south-east, and it’s a beach break. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, with a gap in the surfable action at the start that lasts a few days, then some real standouts on the horizon. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing to fret about there.
The first real chance to get wet doesn’t come until Monday morning, the 21st of July. We’re looking at a 6ft swell from the east, with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the south at just 3 mph. The wave energy is moderate (583), and the conditions are clean. This is a good one for the beginners, but it’s not the standout.
Things really get interesting on Friday morning, the 24th of July. That’s where the standout of the first week sits. The swell jumps to 7ft from the south with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is strong (1058). The wind is a light cross-off from the south-southwest at 6 mph, and it’s clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The wave height is pushing 8ft, so it’s too big for beginners, but for everyone else, this is a beauty.
The next real highlight comes on Monday morning, the 27th of July. The swell drops slightly to 5ft from the south-southeast, but the period is a solid 11 seconds, and the energy is moderate (504). What makes this special is the glassy conditions with the wind from the west-southwest at only 3 mph. The waves will be clean and lined up, and it’s a very good session. The afternoon gets even better with a 5ft swell and a moderate offshore wind from the west-southwest at 12 mph, making for clean, groomed faces.
Looking further ahead, Tuesday morning, the 28th of July, is another standout. A 7ft south swell with an 11-second period and strong energy (1536) combines with light cross-offshore winds. This is excellent for experienced surfers, but again, it’s a bit solid for the beginners.
The big one, however, is Wednesday morning, the 29th of July. The swell is 7ft from the south-southeast with a very long period of 16 seconds. The combined energy is very strong (2214). The wind is a light cross-on, but for a spot exposed to the south-east, this is a serious swell. The period is so long that at a beach break like Diggers, it might break a bit straight, but there will be plenty of power. This is for experts only, as it’s over 8ft.
The final standout in the outlook is Monday morning, the 3rd of August. A 5ft swell from the south-southeast with a 14-second period and moderate energy (879) meets glassy conditions with a light wind from the southeast. This is a very good session, clean and with plenty of push for those longer boards.
Remember, the long-range stuff is promising but less certain. Crowds at Diggers are often, so expect company, especially on the good days. The consistent nature of the break means it tends not to stay flat for long.
