Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s coming up at Diggers.
We’ve got a bit of a wild ride ahead. The start of the period is a no-go – that big, powerful swell that rolls in from Tuesday the 7th through Thursday the 9th is just too much for this spot. We’re talking 10 ft to 12 ft of SSE swell with serious energy moving around – those numbers are way up there. The wind is mostly cross-off and the sets have a solid 11-second period, so it’s clean, but it’s simply too big for a beginner-friendly break like Diggers. For the experienced crew, even then, that size is a handful and not recommended here.
Things finally settle down by Friday morning, the 10th of July. That’s where you want to be. The swell drops to a manageable 6 ft from the SE, period around 10 seconds, and the wave energy is moderate and just right. The wind goes light cross-off from the SSE and will give you clean lines. This is the first real standout slot, and the forecast says very good surf conditions.
Moving into Saturday morning the 11th, we get a glassy dawn with 4 ft SE swell and a light north breeze. That’s a beautiful call, with moderate energy. It’s not enormous, but clean and fun with a 9-second period. By the afternoon, the swell drops off and the wind turns onshore from the NE – that’s a bit of a mess, so get your session in early.
Sunday the 12th morning has a similar vibe: 3 ft ESE swell, clean with a light WSW offshore, and moderate energy. It’s a pleasant, small-wave day. Afternoon sees the wind go cross-on and the quality drops.
From Monday the 13th onward, we hit a flat spell. Monday sees 2 ft swell and some glassy conditions in the morning, but it’s very ordinary. Tuesday the 14th is nearly flat – 0.7 ft – and the next few days are nothing to write home about. There’s a 2-3 day gap with basically no worthwhile surf.
Then Thursday the 16th of July, we get another big pulse. Morning sees 8 ft S swell with a 12-second period, strong offshore SW winds at 25 km/h, and solid energy – that’s proper, solid swell but again, way too big for Diggers. Only experts should even consider it, and even then it’s pushing the limits.
After that, there are a couple of small windows: Friday the 17th is messy, but Saturday the 18th offers a cleaner 4 ft SE swell with a light offshore SW wind in the morning. Sunday the 19th has a glassy 3 ft SE swell, but it’s small.
The final standout worth mentioning is Tuesday the 22nd of July. Wednesday morning has 7 ft SE swell with a 10-second period, moderate to strong energy, and glassy conditions with a light NNW breeze. That’s very good surf conditions on offer – the main event of that second week, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecast.
So, bottom line: Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th mornings are your prime windows. If you’re chasing bigger stuff later, the 22nd looks promising but less certain. Crowds are often around here when it’s good, so expect company on those clean days.
