The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what's on the menu at Diggers for the next couple of weeks. The water temperature here is sitting right around average for the time of year at 68°F.
The start of the period is a write-off, I'm afraid. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are pumping with solid swell, but it's all wrong. We've got an 8ft SSE swell on Thursday with a cross-off wind that's too juicy for the setup. It's heavy, but the quality is poor. Friday the 17th is the same story; there's wave energy, but it's not coming together. For the weekend, Saturday the 18th sees the swell jump up to 10ft from the SE with strong energy (1177), and Sunday the 19th hits 12ft from the ESE with massive power (2763). Look, these are expert-only conditions for a beginner spot like this. The cross-off wind is just making it a washing machine. If you're a kite surfer, this might be your playground, but for a paddle surfer, it's a hard pass. This rough run continues right through Monday the 20th.
After a long, ugly stretch, we finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. Tuesday the 21st morning is the first time it starts looking reasonable. A 7ft E swell with a light SSW cross-off (6 mph) and clean conditions. The crowd factor here is "often", so expect some company. The real standout, the one to circle on your calendar, is Wednesday the 22nd. The morning brings a glassy 4ft E swell (330 energy), zero wind, and it's going to be absolutely clean. That's the pick of the first week. The afternoon turns onshore, so get on it early.
Things settle down after that. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th offer small surf around 4ft, clean enough, but nothing to write home about. We then hit a flat spell from Saturday the 25th through Monday the 27th, with tiny waves and poor conditions. It's a proper lull.
The outlook improves again going into the second week. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th see a slow build with chest-high S-SSE swells in the 4ft to 5ft range, but the wind is still moderate. The real highlight of the entire forecast is Thursday the 30th. The morning shows a glassy, clean 6ft SSE groundswell with a long 12-second period (842 energy). That's proper grunt for Diggers. No wind, clean lines. That's the one you want to be awake for, even if it's a week and a half out. Things get a little iffy in the afternoon with an onshore breeze.
So, overall, there's a lot of chop to wade through here. The first week is mostly blown-out and too big. The two true standouts are the glassy morning of Wednesday 22nd July, and the clean, long-period groundswell on the morning of Thursday 30th July. Get on those windows.
Rusty.
