The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, lookin’ at the Diggers zone for the next couple of weeks. Early on, it’s gonna be a bit of a write-off with some serious swell and wind, then we get a nice little window mid-week before things get messy again. The real standout is a glassy morning on Tuesday the 21st, and another cracking afternoon on Friday the 24th.
Alright, let’s get into it. The weekend starts off with a solid pulse of ESE swell, coming in at 6ft with 8-second period on Saturday morning, and then building to 8ft in the arvo. Energy is pumping (627 in the morning, 1304 in the arvo), but the wind is a stiff cross-off from the S at 19 mph. It’s gonna be too big and tricky for a proper paddle session. Sunday the 19th is the same story – 10ft to 12ft of E/ESE swell (10-second period), energy readings in the thousands (2284 and 4267), and strong cross-off winds. This is properly big, more of a kite-surfing kind of setup than a paddle-friendly day. The water temp is 68°F, which is about dead average for this time of year.
Monday the 20th eases a bit, with 8ft in the morning and 7ft in the arvo, but it’s still a powerful swell (energy 2591 and 931), and the wind is a cross-off. It’s still pushing the limits for a comfortable paddle.
Now, here’s the first true standout. Tuesday the 21st. The morning is a beauty. The swell drops to 5ft from the E with a 10-second period, the combined energy is 484 – solid, but not crazy. But the wind? Glassy. SSW at 3 mph. That’s clean, smooth, and begging for a session. This is the best on offer in the first week. The afternoon drops to 5ft and gets a bit of a cross-on breeze, so get out there early.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are poor. Swell drops to 3ft or less, with short 8-second periods and weak energy (180 down to 49). The wind is either cross-on or glassy, but there’s just no push. Surfable but very ordinary.
Then we get another standout. Friday the 24th. The morning has a new 7ft SSE swell with a 9-second period, and the energy is solid (783), but the wind is a cross-off, and it’s just a bit too big for the break. The arvo, though, is absolute gold. The swell drops to a punchy 6ft from the SSE, period still 9 seconds, energy at 570, and the wind swings to a light S at 6 mph, cross-off. The report says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is your second big call. Get on it.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are mixed. Saturday morning has 4ft SSE swell (9 seconds, 263 energy) with a light cross-off wind – clean and fun. The morning of Sunday the 26th is almost glassy with 4ft SSE swell (10 seconds, 277 energy). Good, but not as good as the Tuesday or Friday standouts.
From Monday the 27th through to the end of the month, the surf drops off again. Monday has 3ft SSE swell (8 seconds, 182 energy) and a glassy morning, but it’s small. Tuesday the 28th has a 6ft S swell in the arvo (10 seconds, 1068 energy) but with a moderate cross-off breeze, making it possible but not a standout. Wednesday the 29th has a 6ft SSE swell with a strong offshore wind (19 mph, SSW), but the energy is only 536, and the report says marginal. The rest of the week is small to medium, with a few clean sessions but nothing that truly stands out compared to the 21st and 24th.
Into the first week of August, Friday the 31st and Saturday the 1st of August offer some hope. Saturday the 1st has a 5ft ENE swell (8 seconds, 252 energy) with a gentle offshore wind, and Sunday the 2nd has a smaller 3ft E swell (10 seconds, 267 energy) with a light cross-off. Worth a look, but the real magic is in the earlier week.
So, to wrap it up: early on it’s too big and windy. The standout window is Tuesday the 21st morning for glassy, clean 5ft E swell, and Friday the 24th afternoon for a punchy 6ft SSE swell with light cross-off wind. Everything else is either too big, too small, or just ordinary.
