Table - best surf conditions forecast for Diggers over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Look, I’ll level with you. The next week or so at Diggers is a true test of patience. The swell is going to pump, but the wind is going to make a mess of it for a proper paddle session. The first proper recommendation doesn’t come until the 21st of July, so that’s a solid week of waiting. There’s a decent gap with no real quality on offer, so don’t hold your breath for the weekend.
The water temp is sitting right around 68°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thickest rubber just yet.
The wind is the main problem early on. On the 15th and 16th of July, we’ve got a solid south-southwest wind blowing 18-19 mph, cross-offshore, but it’s just too strong to make it fun. The swell is building, but it’s a short-period, wind-affected mess. The wave energy is moderate (417) on the 15th, but the quality is poor. This setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The 17th of July morning sees a 7 ft swell from the SE with a 7-second period, and the wind is still cross-off, but the energy is strong (482). The problem is, the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. It’s expert territory at that size. The 18th and 19th of July get even bigger, with the 19th morning seeing a 8 ft swell from the ESE with a 9-second period and a massive 1145 combined energy. Again, too big for Diggers, and the wind is still cross-off.
Now, the real window opens up on the 21st of July. That Tuesday morning, the swell drops to a more manageable 6 ft from the east, with a 10-second period. The wind is a light 6 mph from the SSW, cross-offshore, and the conditions are clean. The energy is still strong (591), but the waves should have some shape. That’s a good bet for a solid paddle. The afternoon holds up too with 5 ft east swell.
The 23rd of July Thursday morning is a standout. The swell is 5 ft from the east, but the period jumps to 11 seconds, giving it a bit more grunt. The wind is a whisper – 3 mph from the SSW, cross-off, and the water is clean. The energy is moderate (538), but that long-period east swell will wrap in nicely. This is a prime time to get out for a few clean ones. The afternoon goes onshore, so make it a morning mission.
The 25th of July Saturday morning is another one to circle. The swell is 4 ft from the east, but the period is a very nice 12 seconds. The wind is 12 mph from the SSW, offshore, and the conditions are clean. The energy is moderate (419). That long-period groundswell will be breaking a bit straight at this beach break, but if you can find a bank, the shape will be there.
The 27th of July Monday morning is a wildcard. The wind is glassy – zero from the northwest – and the swell is 3 ft from the east with a 12-second period. The energy is moderate (301). That’s about as clean as it gets. Get out early.
The 28th of July Tuesday morning is the last call. The swell is 3 ft from the east, but the period extends to 13 seconds. The wind is 9 mph from the west-southwest, offshore and clean. The energy is moderate (386). That’s a very long-period groundswell, so it will be best on a point or reef, but at Diggers, expect long lulls between sets and a wall that might be a bit straight.
Overall, the best on offer is the 23rd of July Thursday morning. The 25th of July Saturday morning is a close second if you want the long-period goodness. The 21st of July is the first real chance to get wet.
Rusty.
