The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s happening at Diggers over the next couple of weeks.
We start off with a bit of a dud. Monday the 20th of July has some solid swell, but it’s too big for the break, so we’re waiting. The water temp is 68°, about normal for the season.
The first real chance to get wet is Tuesday the 21st of July. The morning brings a 5ft wave from the east with a 10-second period, and the wind is offshore from the SSW—light and clean. The combined energy is moderate (542), and the conditions are set to be very good. That’s your standout for the first week. The afternoon turns cross-shore, so hit it early.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are small and messy with cross-onshore wind. Not worth it.
Friday the 24th of July shows a little pulse in the afternoon. A 4ft SSE swell with a short 7-second period, but the wind is light and cross-off, keeping it clean. Combined energy is low (239), but it’s surfable.
Saturday the 25th of July morning is where it gets good again. A 4ft SSE groundswell with a very long 14-second period, light cross-off wind, and clean conditions. The combined energy jumps to moderate (573). This is quality swell, but with that long period, it’ll be better shaped and have longer lulls. At a beach break, it might be a bit straight, but still worth a paddle.
Sunday the 26th of July morning is glassy. Zero wind, a 3ft SSE swell, 13-second period, and clean as a whistle. Combined energy is moderate (370). That’s a beautiful morning session.
Into the second week, from Monday the 27th through to Thursday the 30th, it’s a mix of smaller clean waves and building energy. The standout in the second week is Thursday the 30th of July. The afternoon brings a 6ft SSE swell with a very long 17-second period, and the combined energy is strong (1961). The wind is cross-off from the S at 15 mph, keeping it clean. This is a big, powerful groundswell—only for experienced surfers. Promising but less certain this far out.
Friday the 31st of July morning has a 4ft SSE swell, 14-second period, and a moderate offshore wind from the SSW. Clean and very good conditions. The combined energy is moderate (752).
After that, into the first few days of August, the swell drops and the wind picks up, making for poor to marginal conditions. Not much to write home about.
So, the two best windows are Tuesday the 21st of July morning and Saturday the 25th of July morning. The glassy Sunday the 26th is a close third. The big Thursday the 30th is one for the experts to watch.
Rusty.
