The Lowdown
G'day, it’s Rusty.
Alright, let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are going to test your patience if you’re keen on getting wet at Diggers. The first good window doesn't even show up until next Sunday the 30th. That’s a solid week and a half of small, junky, and often blown-out conditions to sit through. Don't get too excited about the tiny pulses that roll through – they're just not worth the paddle out.
The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no dramas there.
Now, for the good stuff. The standout by a long shot is the morning of Sunday, August 30th. We've got a solid 6ft of swell coming from the NE, and even though the period is a short 7 seconds, the energy is pumping – you can feel it in the water with a combined energy reading of 677. The wind is light offshore from the SW, keeping it clean. This is the pick of the fortnight, no question. It’s got some size to it, so it’s not a beginner’s day, but for anyone who knows their way around, this is the one to circle.
The afternoon of that same Sunday will still be fun, with the swell dropping to 4ft but still a clean offshore wind, and then Monday the 31st has more energy in the water (460) but that wind is cranking at 19-25 mph. It’ll be clean but hard work, a real paddle battle.
Before all that, there is a tiny, brief window on Wednesday morning, August 19th. It's only 4ft from the ESE with a light 8-second period, and it's absolutely glassy. A bit weak, but if you're desperate and the tide is right, you might find a few soft ones. The afternoon looks better with 5ft and a slightly longer 10-second period, but it's still small.
From the 20th through the 29th, it’s mostly small, onshore junk. You’ll see some clean mornings but with almost no swell – just not worth the effort unless you’re learning to walk on water. The few days with a bit of energy get spoiled by cross-onshore or onshore winds.
So, the long and short of it: suffer through the flat spell, and you'll be rewarded with a proper Sunday session on the 30th. It's a long-range call, but the setup looks promising. Just keep your fingers crossed the wind plays ball.
Rusty.
