The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Ouano Lefts over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, Wednesday the 26th of August kicks off with some solid, clean surf. We’ve got a nice 5ft SSW groundswell with a long 15-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off from the SSE. The water is sitting at 73°, about average for this time of year – nothing weird going on there. The combined energy is pumping at 979 (moderate). It’s not the biggest, but it’s clean and very surfable, making it a good option to start.

The real standout, though, is shaping up for Wednesday the 2nd of September. By the morning, we’re looking at a solid 8ft SSW swell rolling in, with a 14-second period. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the SE, keeping it clean. The energy is strong, reading 2237. This is proper groundswell, and for an exposed reef like Ouano Lefts, that long period is going to produce some excellent, powerful walls. It’s in the expert zone at this size, so only the crew with experience should paddle out. That morning window is the pick of the entire forecast.

A couple of other mornings stand out too. Thursday the 3rd of September brings a 6ft SSW swell with glassy offshore wind from the E – that’s about as clean as it gets, and the energy is still solid at 1141. Then Sunday the 6th of September has a 3ft SSW groundswell with a very long 21-second period, and light cross-off winds. The energy is moderate (1019), but that period is special – the waves will be lined up and powerful at the reef, though at this size it’s a more manageable, high-quality session for the confident surfer.

There’s a bit of a gap in the middle. The end of August and first couple of days of September get a bit messy with building winds and some shorter-period, crumbly swell. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are small and choppy, and from Sunday the 30th through to Tuesday the 1st of September, the wind picks up strong, making conditions marginal. The swell gets bigger but the quality drops, especially by Monday afternoon when the period drops to just 6 seconds – that’s just wind chop. The week after the 3rd starts to fade out a bit, with smaller swells and lighter winds, but still some fun, clean options on offer.

As for crowds at Ouano Lefts, with it being a fairly consistent reef that can turn on with the right swell, you can expect it to be busy sometimes, especially on those cleaner, more substantial days. The standout Wednesday the 2nd will likely see a few locals out, but that’s just part of the deal for a wave this good.

Happy hunting, and keep an eye on that first week of September.

Rusty.
