The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s headin’ our way for The Bowl. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s a bit of light at the end of the tunnel if you’re patient.
The forecast starts off a bit flat and messy. We’ve got small swell around 3ft to 4ft for the first few days, but the wind is just awful – cross-shore, cross-on, and a lot of chop. The wave energy is weak to moderate (147), and the water is sitting at 56°, which is about normal for this time of year. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for. Sunday the 19th through to Wednesday the 23rd, it’s just a write-off.
We hit a bit of a lull in quality, but things start to get interesting from Friday the 24th. The swell bumps up to 10ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the wind goes clean cross-off. The energy jumps to a very strong 1325. Now, this is big – over 8ft – so this is strictly for the experts. It’s a clean, powerful reef break, but it’s gonna be a handful. The Bowl is fairly consistent, and crowds are possible, but with conditions like that, you’ll probably have it to yourself if you’re brave enough.
The standout, and I mean the real standout, is Saturday the 25th. The morning is still 10ft, but the period stretches to 11 seconds, making for a proper groundswell. The real gem is the afternoon: the swell drops a touch to 8ft, the wind goes light offshore from the south at 6 mph, and the energy is still massive (1429). The Bowl is a reef, so this long-period swell will wrap in beautifully. The water is still around 56°. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The conditions are clean, and the wave quality is top-notch. The Bowl is advanced-only, so you better have your wits about you.
After that, Sunday the 26th through to the end of the month, the swell drops back to 4ft to 7ft, and the wind gets messy again – cross-on, onshore, and choppy. Not much to write home about until Saturday the 1st of August. The morning session shows a glassy 5ft from the WNW, with a light NNE breeze. The energy is moderate (281). It’s not the size of the 25th, but it’ll be clean and fun for a morning paddle. The rest of the first week of August is a mix of cross-on winds and small swell, so there’s nothing else that really stands out.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a bust. The one to circle on your calendar is Saturday the 25th of July, especially the afternoon. That’s the best bet for a quality, clean, powerful session. Be ready for the size.
Rusty.
