Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Bowl over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’m looking at the forecast for The Bowl over the next sixteen days, and the honest truth is, we’re going to have to work for any scraps we get. The good news is this reef setup at The Bowl cleans up nicely with the S’ly offshore direction it prefers, but the swell just isn’t cooperating for most of the run.
We kick off the window with a tiny pulse. Sunday the 12th is first up. It’s a small morning session with a 2ft WNW swell pushing in at 8 seconds, making for some weak, short-period chop. The combined wave energy is a measly 70. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze from the ESE at 9 mph though, which keeps the surface glassy. It’s surfable, but it seriously lacks push. Water temp is a normal 55° for this time of year, nothing special.
Monday the 13th is more of the same: 2ft, weak, and pretty ordinary. Tuesday the 14th is about the best of a bad bunch in this first week. The swell bumps up a touch to 3ft with an improving 10-second period, WNW. The combined energy jumps to 247. The winds stay clean and cross-off, so the wave faces will be smooth. The Bowl is advanced, and you’d need your A-game to find a decent one, but it’s your best chance for a turnable wave all week. Everything else after that drops off the face of the earth – we’re looking at barely rideable 1ft to 2ft drivel through the weekend.
There’s a big pause coming. From late on the 14th right through to the 18th, the surf is basically flat. It’s not a good run.
The long-range outlook does eventually show a pulse of something serious, but it comes with a price. By Tuesday the 22nd, a much larger WNW swell arrives, building to 7ft on Wednesday the 23rd. The period is a solid groundswell 11 seconds, and the combined energy spikes to 995. That is powerful. The problem? That’s all smothered by a nasty cross-onshore wind from the NW at 16-19 mph, making for a choppy, blown-out mess. For an advanced reef like The Bowl, this setup is more likely to be a washing machine for experts only, and even then, the quality will be poor. It looks more like a kite-surfing day than a clean surf session.
If I’m calling out a standalone highlight, it’s got to be Tuesday morning July 14th. The 3ft swell (WNW, 10 sec), combined with the clean, light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE at 9 mph, makes it the only window with both enough size and a clean face. For an advanced spot, you’ll have it to yourself if you’re keen.
Stay hopeful, the long-range can always shift, but for now, temper your expectations.
Rusty.
