Table - best surf conditions forecast for Thurso Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Thurso Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a tough start. The first few days are a real mixed bag, and honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about until the morning of Thursday, July 9th. Even then, it’s just a little 4 ft swell from the west with a 9-second period, which is okay, but it’s not gonna blow your mind. The water’s sittin’ at about 54°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no drama there.
Friday morning the 10th is a bit of a write-off with light onshore winds, and the weekend doesn’t look much better. Saturday the 11th has a 4 ft west swell at 10 seconds, but it’s onshore again, so it’s gonna be messy.
Now, the first real standout – and I mean the *only* one that’s worth circling on the calendar – is the morning of Tuesday, July 14th. We’ve got a 4 ft swell from the WNW with a solid 11-second period, which means there’s some real energy behind it. The combined energy is 367 (moderate), so it’s got some punch. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the ESE, which is gonna keep things clean. This is a good one for the experienced crew, because for beginners, 4 ft is right on the edge of being a bit much – but it’s not huge. It’s a beach break, so the long period might make it a bit straight, but with that clean wind, it should be fun.
The rest of the week is quiet again. The 15th and 16th are tiny, and we’re looking at a gap of almost no surf worth mentioning until the 19th of July. On Sunday the 19th, the swell picks up to 5 ft from the WNW, but it’s got a nasty 16 mph cross-offshore wind, and the period is only 7 seconds. That’s a short, choppy one – not great for a paddle, maybe more for the kite crew.
Then, around Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, we see the biggest swell of the period. On the 21st, we’re talking 7 ft from the WNW at 10 seconds, with a combined energy of 963 (strong). That’s a proper expert-only wave. But the wind is onshore from the NNW, so it’s gonna be a bit of a washing machine. The period is only 10 seconds, so it’s not a true groundswell, but it’s still got plenty of power. If you’re a solid surfer and you don’t mind a bit of chop, that Tuesday morning might be your best bet, but it’s a long way out and the conditions are far from guaranteed.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is probably the morning of Tuesday, July 14th – clean, moderate energy, and a decent swell. After that, the 21st has the size, but the wind is against it. The rest is mostly small or messy. It’s a tough run for the beach, but it’s not the end of the world – forecasts can change.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
