The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I'm looking at the forecast for Oxwich Point. It's a tough one to call. The water is sitting at 69°, which is a massive 9° warmer than usual for this time of year – that's seriously unusual, feels like bathwater.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, it's a long, flat, and frustrating period. The first solid recommendation for actual surf doesn't show up until Wednesday, July 29th, and even then, it's still not great. We're talking about a gap of nearly two weeks of nothing but tiny, unsurfable waves from the 16th right through to the 28th. The conditions are clean and glassy at times, but there's just no energy in the water. You'd be better off taking up rock pooling.
Finally, on Wednesday afternoon, July 29th, we see a bit of a pulse. There's a 4ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it's going to be weak and disorganized. The combined energy is moderate at 128, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore, which is a positive. It's not going to be pretty, but it's the first sign of life.
The next day, Thursday, July 30th, has a bit more size with a 4ft to 3ft WSW swell, but the period is still short at 6-7 seconds. The energy is still moderate (134 and 108), but the wind swings to a strong cross-shore, making it messy with a chop. It's a bit of a sloppy one.
Into Friday, July 31st, the swell drops back to 3ft in the morning (68 energy) with light cross-offshore winds, so it cleans up. But the afternoon turns nasty with a 4ft swell, 25 mph cross-shore wind, and a strong cross-chop – that's a write-off. The whole setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
There is no standout session here. The best you could hope for is a few crumbly, weak lines on the cleanest of the July 29th or 31st mornings. Honestly, it's a blank run. For a sheltered reef like Oxwich Point, it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, the forecasts can only change for the better.
Rusty.
