Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Westward Ho! for the next couple of weeks, and I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a grim run. We’re looking at a massive gap where you can pretty much leave the board in the garage.
The water is sitting at 62°F right now, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s not disappointing.
We start off Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th with tiny 2ft waves from the west, but the wind is onshore, making a mess of things. Combined energy is weak (56), and it’s just poor surf. Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th are glassy in the mornings with the same 2ft west swell, but the energy is even lower (41-43). It’s clean but so small it’s barely a ripple.
Friday the 10th is the first real hope. Morning has a clean 2ft west swell with an offshore east wind. The combined energy is still weak (57), but the conditions are clean. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. Still, the best we’ve seen so far.
Then it gets worse. From Saturday the 11th all the way through Sunday the 20th, we’re looking at a brutal stretch. Swell drops to 1ft, then 0.7ft, then 0.3ft... the combined energy falls to single digits and low double digits. There’s a 0.3ft swell with a 21-second period on the 12th, but that’s just a long-period ghost that won’t do anything here. The wind is offshore for much of it, but there’s simply no wave to surf. The energy is basically zero.
Then, finally, on Tuesday the 21st, we get a pulse. The NW swell jumps to 5ft, and the combined energy hits 223, which is moderate. The wind is cross-off in the morning, keeping it clean. The period is only 6 seconds, so it’s a short-period wind swell, a bit fat and sloppy. This is the only standout in the entire 16-day window, but it’s a full two weeks away, so take that promise with a grain of salt. Given the size, it’s still okay for beginners if they’re careful, but it’s nothing to write home about.
Honestly, for a spot that’s fairly exposed, this is a shocking run. If you’re keen, the only window worth paddling out for is the early morning of Friday the 10th for a tiny, clean knee-high wave, or you gamble on the 21st. Otherwise, the kite surfers might have a better look at the 5ft on the 21st than we will with that short period.
Rusty.
