The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s on offer for Westward Ho! over the coming weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you. We’re looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead. The immediate forecast is basically a flat spell with no surf to speak of. For the first 11 days, from Monday the 13th right up to Thursday the 23rd of July, we're dealing with tiny, weak waves that are barely a ripple. Swell heights are mostly hanging around 0.3 ft to 1 ft, and the combined energy is pathetic – we're talking single digits and low double figures like 12 or 34, just no power at all. The water here is running at 64°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won't be feeling it through a wetsuit because you won't be paddling out.
There is a little pulse of energy that tries to show up on Friday the 24th, with the swell picking up to 3 ft from the SW, and then 4 ft from the WSW on the afternoon. The combined energy gets a bit more respectable, hitting 54 and 65, and that's a moderate amount of energy. But the wind is the killer. It's blowing straight onshore from the SW and WSW at 9-16 mph, making a mess of things. This is a beach break setup, and with that wind, it’s going to be choppy and lumpy. Honestly, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th offers a little more size, with chest-high waves around 3 ft. But again, the wind is a cross-shore or onshore mess at 16-22 mph, and the period is short at only 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 108 on the Saturday afternoon, which is moderate, but the quality is just poor. It’s going to be lumpy and blown out.
The very end of the run, from Monday the 27th into Tuesday the 28th, we see the swell drop back a bit to 2 ft or 2 ft from the west. The wind is still a problem, swinging from the SW and then to the WSW at 19-25 mph, making for fresh, lumpy conditions. There's just no let-up.
So, the honest truth? There isn’t a single standout day in this 16-day window. The whole period is a write-off for decent surf. It’s a tough run for Westward Ho!, but that’s the reality of it. Keep the board in the car, but maybe just look at the ocean for a while.
Rusty.
