The Lowdown

Right then, folks. Rusty here, and I’ve had a look at what Westward Ho has on offer for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, I’m not gonna sugar-coat it for you: this is a rough stretch. The entire 16-day window is littered with poor surf conditions and not a single day worth paddling out for. We’re staring down a blank run from start to finish, I’m afraid. For an area that can be fairly consistent, this is a disappointing dry spell, but it happens. Forecasts can change, so don’t give up hope entirely.

We start off on Wednesday the 19th with a tiny, weak 2ft swell from the west, with a short period of 6 seconds and only 69 units of combined energy. It's onshore at 9 mph, just poor.

Thursday the 20th shows a bit more size, around 6ft on the morning, but the cross-onshore wind has it chopped and messy – the score tells the whole story. The combined energy is a bit more moderate at 425, but the conditions ruin any chance.

Friday the 21st morning is the closest we get to a “meh” moment. A clean 3ft swell from the west, 8 second period, with a light cross-off breeze from the northeast at 6 mph. The combined energy is weak at 109, and the files call it surfable but very ordinary. That’s the best of a bad bunch, but I wouldn’t rush down for it. The afternoon turns poor again.

From Saturday the 22nd all the way through to Tuesday the 25th, it’s tiny, weak, and mostly poor. Wave heights barely scrape 1ft, with combined energy values dropping as low as 14 units – you’d need a microscope to find a wave. The wind looks clean at times, with some glassy conditions on Tuesday the 25th morning, but there’s simply no swell to work with.

We get a slight bump on Tuesday the 25th afternoon with a 3ft swell from the WSW and a 10-second period, giving a combined energy of 143. But it’s cross-onshore and gets a poor surf quality tag.

That’s the story for the rest of the run. Wednesday the 26th to the end of the window on Thursday the 3rd of September is a constant stream of onshore and cross-onshore winds, with size picking up dramatically from Sunday the 30th. We see 6ft, 7ft, and then a whopping 12ft swell on Monday the 31st of August, with a combined energy of 2407 – that’s very strong. But every single record is marked as poor surf conditions. The wind is fresh and cross-onshore, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. That 12ft swell is way beyond beginners, and the conditions make it a nightmare for anyone.

The truth is, with that kind of swell and poor wind direction, Westward Ho is looking far more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone with a paddle. The setup is a beach break, and the cross-onshore winds will just make it a washing machine.

So, to wrap it up: no standouts, no hidden gems, just a lot of waiting. Stick to the forecasts and hope something changes.

Rusty.
