Table - best surf conditions forecast for Westward Ho over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Westward Ho over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet run, so don’t get your hopes up for any barnstormers.
Right now, there’s next to nothing on offer. The first real chance of a surfable wave doesn't show up until Friday the 10th, and even then it’s a modest one. The swell is tiny, only 2 ft from the west with a short period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak, just 79. But here’s the thing – Friday morning we get clean conditions with a light offshore breeze from the east. That’s the highlight of the whole 16-day window. For a beginner-friendly beach break like Westward Ho, which is fairly consistent and exposed to the west-northwest, that offshore wind will make it look a whole lot better than the size suggests. The water is sitting at 63°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
Saturday the 11th is a write-off. The swell drops to 1 ft with a weak-energy reading of 31. Even though the wind goes offshore, it’s too strong at 16 mph and the waves just aren’t there. Sunday through to the end of the first week is even worse – swell heights are down around 0.3 ft to 1 ft, hardly breaking at all. Keep your board in the car but don’t bother taking it out.
There’s a bit of a gap from around Monday the 14th through to late in the second week. The swells that do show are weak and short-period, with the combined energy barely cracking 70 even at its best. Toward the very end, on Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd of July, we see a slight bump – swell gets up to 3 ft from the west with 6 to 8 second periods, hitting around 61 to 74 in energy. But the wind is cross or cross-onshore from the north-northwest, so you’re looking at choppy, messy conditions. Nothing to write home about.
To be honest, if you really need a paddle, Friday the 10th morning is your only real shout. It’s clean, it’s small, and the crowd factor is possible – but with waves this small, likely no one else will be out. Beyond that, it’s a long blank stretch. Hopefully the forecasts change, because this patch of poor surf looks set to hang around.
Rusty.
