The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest right from the start: this is a tough one. We’re looking at Westward Ho and the forecast is a real bummer. For the entire 16-day window, from Wednesday the 15th of July right through to Thursday the 30th of July, there is not a single standout, not one decent wave on offer. The swell is tiny, rarely getting above 1 foot, and the wave energy is pitifully weak, with the combined energy sitting at a measly 23 (23) on the 15th and barely ticking over. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 15th sees that 1 foot of west swell with a 10 second period, but the wind is howling at 15 mph. Even though it’s offshore, that’s not enough to make a wave out of nothing. By Thursday the 16th, the swell drops to 0.7 feet. We get a few cleaner windows with lighter winds, like Friday morning the 17th with a light breeze, but it’s still 1 feet of weak, short-period junk. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so you won’t be freezing, but you’ll be bobbing around on a lake.
The middle of the period is a long, frustrating gap. There’s just nothing to recommend. A few days, like the 24th and 25th of July, show a small bump in swell to 3 feet and 4 feet, but the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The combined energy on the 25th of July hits 134 (134) – still only moderate energy – but it’s ruined by strong onshore winds at 12 mph. That’s not surfable, that’s just a washing machine.
Honestly, this stretch looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The wind is strong and consistent out of the west, and the swell is just too weak and poorly aligned to offer a clean wave. If you’re desperate, the cleanest windows are the mornings with an easterly offshore wind, like on the 22nd and 23rd of July, but you’ll be scratching for a knee-high lump. It’s a tough one, but it’s not uncommon for this area to have a flat run like this. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
