Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Westward Ho over the next 16 days is a tough one. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead, and honestly, there’s no real standout worth paddling out for. The first solid recommendation isn’t until Friday the 10th of July, and even then, it’s barely a ripple.
The pattern starts with a flat, weak run. Through Sunday the 5th and into the first half of the next week, we’re looking at small, dribbly swell around 2 ft to 2 ft with mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. The combined energy sits in the weak range, meaning the ocean just isn’t doing much. You’ll be sitting on your board doing nothing.
Wednesday the 8th brings a moment of glassy conditions with that north wind at 3 mph, but the swell is only 2 ft straight from the west – barely enough to stand up on. It’s clean, but you’ll be working for one ride.
The best of a bad bunch comes on Friday the 10th of July. The morning offers a gentle offshore breeze from the ENE at 9 mph, with a west swell of 2 ft pushing down the line. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no drama there. The combined energy is weak, and the wave comment says “surfable but very ordinary.” That’s about as good as it gets. It’s a beginner-friendly break anyway, so if you’re just learning, this might be your window.
After that, it’s more of the same small stuff until Tuesday the 14th of July, when the morning sees a 2 ft west swell with moderate offshore winds and energy just touching the lower end of moderate. The afternoon picks up to 3 ft and a 10-second period, with clean cross-off winds. Still not a stand-out wave, but probably the punchiest the whole period gets.
Then we slide into more small, messy patterns. Thursday the 16th of July sees a bump in height to 5 ft from the NNW, but it’s short-period (6 seconds) and cross-shore, making for a choppy, gutless affair. The energy is moderate but the quality is poor. That kind of setup with a beach break and strong cross-shore wind is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than a paddle.
The final week trails off into tiny, choppy leftovers. Monday the 20th of July has a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind and a 0.7 ft swell – basically a lake.
So bottom line: If you’re desperate, Friday the 10th and Tuesday the 14th are your best shots for a clean, rideable wave. But don’t expect much. This is a long blank stretch for the area.
Rusty.
