Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get stuck into the look ahead for our little slice of coast. It's a bit of a quiet tale for the next couple of weeks, so don't expect any fireworks, but there are a couple of moments to keep an eye on.
Straight off the bat, the water is sitting at 63°F at the start, which is *much warmer than normal* (an anomaly of 4°F). That’s a nice little bonus; you’ll barely need a spring suit.
The outlook starts off pretty grim. We’ve got a run of poor surf with nothing rideable for the first week and a half. From Friday the 3rd right through to Tuesday the 14th, it's essentially a write-off. The swell is anemic, mostly around 2ft or less, with weak energy readings (between 27 and 237 on the energy scale, and even that first 237 is a bogus reading from a poor quality wind swell). The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, leaving the ocean choppy and messy. For a beginner spot like Westward Ho, it’s still too small and bumpy to bother. Honestly, it's more of a beach-walk and coffee kind of stretch.
We finally get a tiny flicker of life on Tuesday afternoon, July 14th. The swell bumps up to a pathetic but surfable 2ft from the west, but the real kicker is the wind turning offshore from the ESE at 16 mph. The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," and I can't argue. The energy is moderate at 114, and it’s clean, but at this size, you're hunting for knee-high bumps. It's a "if you're desperate" session.
The only stand-out worth a true mention falls on Saturday, July 18th. Now, we’re talking about this over a week and a half away, so treat it as a promising rumour rather than gospel. Swell is set to push up to 4ft in the morning, jumping to 6ft in the afternoon from the WSW. The combined energy spikes into the strong zone, hitting 544 in the afternoon. That's proper grunt for the Ho. The catch? The wind will be cross-onshore from the WNW. For an open beach like this, a 6ft cross-onshore swell won't be clean; it'll be choppy and lumpy. It’s a size that’s pushing out of beginner territory and into intermediate fun, but the bumpy conditions will keep it from being perfect. If the wind backs off a touch, it could be the best we get in the whole run, but as it stands, it's a "maybe" date for the diary.
So, to sum it up: bone-dry through the first 11 days, then a window of small, clean waves on the 14th for the committed, followed by a potentially lumpy but punchy swell on the 18th. No screaming barrels, but a little hope on the horizon.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
