The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next two weeks at Westward Ho are a tough pill to swallow. The models are showing a real flat spell, and I’m not seeing much to get excited about for a paddle.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, the first proper surf recommendation doesn’t show up until late in the run. From now until the end of July, we’re looking at a gap of about 15 days with no real surf to speak of. The swell is tiny, mostly wobbling between 0.7ft and 3ft, with a few pulses of weak energy. The combined energy numbers are all in the double digits, well under 100, which means the ocean is just not putting any power into the water. It’s a long, flat run.
The first glimmer of something that might be worth a look comes on Wednesday, 29th July. The morning brings a little 2ft swell from the west, with a messy 5-second period, and the wind is coming from the NE at 12 mph, which is clean and cross-offshore. The combined energy is still only 49, so it’s weak, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The waves will be small and weak, but clean. You’ll be fighting for scraps, but it’s the only game in town.
Then into Thursday, 30th July, we see the biggest bump of the whole forecast. The swell picks up to 5ft from the west, with a 6-second period. The combined energy jumps to 164 (moderate). This is the stand-out period. The catch is the wind turns onshore from the west at 9 mph, so it’s going to be messy and lumpy. For a beginner-friendly beach break like Westward Ho, that onshore wind will chop it up quick. The water temp is a notable 64°F, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, the cleanest conditions of the whole run are on the 29th, but the swell is tiny. The only real size arrives on the 30th, but the wind ruins it. If the wind swings a little more northerly, it could be a fun, messy afternoon. But as it stands, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing given the onshore winds and small, period-challenged swell.
Keep your eyes on the forecast, folks. It tends not to stay this poor for long, and things can change.
Rusty.
