Alright folks, Rusty here, and it’s a bit of a bleak picture we’re looking at. We’ve got a long stretch of clean-up duty ahead, so don’t go getting your hopes up for any morning glory rides just yet.
Right now, things are looking pretty sad. The first sign of anything on offer isn’t until Friday, July 3rd, but even then, it’s a no-go. Westward Ho is seeing a small 3ft swell from the west at 10 seconds, but with 12 mph onshore winds, it’s just a messy, choppy write-off. That pattern is the story for the next ten days straight – every session is marked as poor. You’ll get tiny swell, almost always under 3ft, and it’s almost always blown out by westerly winds. The most promising looking window for a clean-up comes late on Thursday, July 9th, where we finally see some light easterly winds going offshore. The wave energy is weak, and the swell is still a paltry 2ft. It’d be clean, but there’s just no power to push you around. That light offshore wind does stick around through Friday the 10th, but again, the swell is tiny.
It’s a real grind. The water is absolutely balmy though, sitting at 63°F which is 4°F above average for this time of year – that’s much warmer than normal, so at least you won’t need a thick wetsuit for the wait.
Honestly, the only hint of something different comes right at the end of the 16-day window. On Friday, July 17th, we see the swell bump up to 4ft from the NNW, but it’s a super short period of just 6 seconds. That’s junk windswell. It’s a brief spike of energy, but with westerly onshore winds that day, it’ll just be a bouncy, blown-out mess. The next morning, Saturday the 18th, sees a drop back down to 3ft but with a pitiful 5 second period. That’s not surf, that’s just chop.
There are zero standouts here. The swell never gets over 4ft, the good wind windows have no swell, and every time the swell tries to show up, the wind ruins it. Best case scenario is keeping an eye on Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th for a hopeful but tiny clean paddle if you're desperate to get wet.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
