G'day, Rusty here, and I've gotta say, this is a tough one. The next couple of weeks at Westward Ho! are looking pretty grim, to be honest. I've scanned the whole 16-day run and there's no real standout, no juicy session calling your name. We're staring down a long stretch of mostly poor surf conditions, with only a few very ordinary, small windows.
We kick off Sunday the 5th with small, weak 3ft swell from the west, but it's got onshore wind and a combined energy of just 84 – that's really weak. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a whopping 4° warmer than normal for the time of year, so it's much warmer than you'd expect. But you won't care much about that when the waves are that poor.
Sunday the 5th afternoon through to Thursday the 10th morning is just a graveyard of poor surf. The swell drops even smaller, to 2ft and 2ft, with weak energy readings (41 to 44) and constant onshore to cross-onshore wind. It's just not worth paddling out.
There's a little blink on Friday the 10th. The morning sees a weak 2ft west swell (79 combined energy), but the wind swings offshore from the east at 12 mph, so it'll be clean. The afternoon turns glassy with a westerly breeze, but that swell is still tiny. It's surfable but very ordinary. Not something to get excited about.
Then we go back into poor surf from Saturday the 11th right through to Sunday the 19th. The swell gets a little bigger on Saturday the 11th – 4ft from the northwest – but it's cross-onshore and period is only 7 seconds, so it's a choppy, weak mess. The combined energy is 130 (moderate) but the wind kills it.
We finally see some bigger numbers coming in on Sunday the 19th afternoon. There's a 6ft west swell (8-second period, so short period) hitting with a cross-onshore wind, combined energy of 421 (strong). Monday the 20th morning pushes 7ft west swell (9-second period), cross-onshore fresh breeze, and a combined energy of 651 (strong). That's a lot of energy, but the wind is going to ruin it – choppy, ugly, and too big for beginners at that size (over 5ft). It's really only for experts if you can handle the mess.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there's not a single session I'd recommend driving for. The texture is poor, the swell is either tiny or wind-chopped. If the wind was right on that bigger swell at the end, it'd be a different story, but it's not. Keep your board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
