The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s brewing for our local stretch.
We’re kicking off the forecast period on Sunday, July 19th, and to be honest, it’s a pretty grim start. The energy is just not there. We’re looking at a tiny, weak 1ft swell from the NNW with a period of only 4 seconds — that’s just wind-chop, not surf. The combined energy is a measly 12 (weak energy), and with a cross-off wind, it’s not doing us any favours. This poor run of tiny, choppy waves is set to drag on for days. There’s a bit of a gap here with no real recommendations until the end of the month.
The one bright spot in this whole 16-day window pops up on Friday morning, July 24th. It’s a small window, but it’s special. The wind is forecast to be glassy — dead calm — and the swell is a tiny 0.7ft from the west with an 8-second period. The combined energy is only 10 (weak energy), so it’s not going to be big, but that glassy surface will make it look perfect for a longboard or a log. It’s a beguiling moment of calm in an otherwise choppy forecast.
The biggest pulse of swell arrives around Sunday, July 26th, with a 5ft swell from the west, and a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 208 (moderate wave energy) — that’s a proper kick of energy. But here’s the catch: every single session from that point on is hammered by a strong onshore wind. For the morning of the 26th, it’s a moderate cross-onshore, and by the afternoon it’s a fresh cross-onshore with a lumpy 19 mph wind. The swell is there, but the quality is going to be a mess. This setup is really more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The same story continues through Monday, July 27th, with similar 5ft west-northwest swell and onshore winds, making it a choppy, lumpy mess for anyone trying to paddle.
The water temperature is a notable 65°F, which is a solid 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year. It’s much warmer than normal, so you might not need a full wetsuit for a quick session.
To be brutally honest, the only real standout is that tiny, glassy morning on Friday, July 24th. Everything else in the 16-day window is either too small, too onshore, or a combination of both. The period around the 26th to the 27th has the size, but the wind ruins it completely. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the 24th is your best bet, but keep your expectations very low for any real waves.
Rusty.
