Table - best surf conditions forecast for Westward Ho over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’ve got a long, flat spell on the horizon for Westward Ho! before anything even remotely worth paddling out for shows up. There’s a big gap in the action, so don’t be in a rush to wax up.
The first bit of hope comes right at the end of the forecast, on Friday morning, 24th July. That’s the standout window. We’ll see a pulse of swell build to 5ft, coming from the WNW, with a short period of 6 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (133), so it’s not a powerhouse, but it’s the most we’ve seen in weeks. The wind will be light and onshore from the West, which is a bit of a let-down for the quality, but it’s not howling. For the beginner crew at Westward Ho, this swell is within your range, but the short period will make it a bit crumbly and a little tricky to find the glide. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to complain about there.
Now, square in the way of that little bump is a brutal stretch of flatness. From Thursday 9th July all the way through Thursday 23rd July, the surf is a no-go. The swell barely musters 2ft most days, with weak energy readings often in the teens or twenties. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-offshore in the mornings, which would be perfect if there was any wave to ride, but with tiny swell and poor surf conditions, it’s a waste of a clean wind. It’s a proper dry spell for Westward Ho, and the truth is, this is a tough period for the area. The ocean is just not cooperating.
So, keep your eyes on Friday 24th July. It’s not firing, but it’s the only show in town. The rest is a write-off. Get your gear ready for that one morning, and if it doesn’t happen, wait for the next proper swell.
Rusty.
