The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here.
Alright, let’s cut to it. Westward Ho! is looking lean for a good stretch of this 16-day window, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Right now, through the end of August, it’s flat as a tack. We’re seeing swell heights down in the 0.3 to 0.4 feet range—basically nothing—with combined energy readings stuck in the weak zone, between 10 and 96. There’s some clean offshore wind in the mix, but with no swell to speak of, it just means glassy, empty water. You might get a splash on a longboard, but honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for.
We’re looking at a long dry spell with no real surf recommendations for nearly the whole first week and a half. The first sign of life comes on the morning of Tuesday, September 1st. That’s when we get a so-called “surfable” wave, but it’s pretty ordinary—just 2 feet of west swell, weak energy around 76, and a clean surface. It’s a tease more than anything.
But here’s the moment that actually gets the blood pumping: Thursday, September 3rd, in the afternoon. That’s your standout. Swell jumps to around 4 feet out of the west, with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy pushes up to 386—solid moderate. The wind is a light offshore from the northeast, leaving the surface clean. For a beach break, that’s as good as the forecast gets. The water is a warm 66° with an anomaly that’s much warmer than normal, about 4° above average, so it’ll feel like a proper summer session. This is the one to point the car towards if you can.
After that peak, things taper off again. The 4th holds some energy around 3 feet, but a cross-shore wind creeps in and puts a bit of chop on the faces. By the weekend of September 5th and 6th, the swell is dropping right back down, and by Sunday it’s nearly flat again with some rain moving in and a fresh onshore breeze. We’re back to waiting.
So, be patient. If you can get out on the 3rd, do it. Otherwise, keep the wax fresh and don’t bother fighting this one. It’ll fill back in, this place always does.
Rusty, out.
