Alright, grab a coffee, let’s talk about Westward Ho! over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet start. Monday the 6th through to Sunday the 12th are all poor surf conditions. We’ve got tiny waves – ankle to knee-high at best – and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting between 20 and 63 (that’s the low range). Not much to get excited about.
Wednesday the 8th morning goes glassy, with the wind barely a whisper from the NNW, but the swell is still only 2 ft at 9 seconds from the west. Clean as a pin but no push. Still, it’s a sign the ocean’s trying.
We finally see a little hope on Friday the 10th. Morning brings a gentle offshore breeze from the east, and the swell is 2 ft from the west, period 9 seconds. The combined energy is 59 – still weak – but it’s surfable and clean. Same story Friday afternoon: 2 ft, cross-offshore wind, clean. If you’re desperate, you could get a few little ones at Westward Ho, but it’s very ordinary.
Then from Saturday the 11th through to Thursday the 16th, it’s a long dry spell. Waves drop to 0.3 ft or 1 ft, with fresh offshore winds blowing hard from the east. The swell energy drops into the single digits and teens. Honestly, it’s flat. A good time to wax your board or fix a wetsuit zip.
Now, we get a flicker of life on Friday the 17th morning. Swell picks up to 5 ft from the west, period 9 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the north-northeast. The combined energy jumps to 352 (moderate). The surf report says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the first real standout in the whole run. Not too big for a confident beginner, and the conditions look clean. Crowds at Westward Ho can show up sometimes, but on a Friday morning, you might get a window.
Saturday the 18th morning has similar size, 5 ft from the west-southwest, but the wind turns cross-onshore from the northwest. That chops it up, so it’s not as clean.
But the real highlight? That’s Monday the 21st morning. Swell builds to 8 ft from the west, period 8 seconds, with a gentle offshore from the east-southeast. That’s clean, offshore, and the combined energy hits 733 (strong). The report says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the best of the whole outlook – solid, punchy waves for an experienced surfer. It’s over 5 ft, so a little much for total beginners, but if you’re comfortable in head-high-plus surf, this is your window. Keep in mind, with a 8 ft west swell, Westward Ho can offer some fun lefts. Just know that on a Monday, it might be fairly quiet. This is a standout.
After that, Tuesday the 22nd morning holds similar size and energy (8 ft, 733 energy) with a continued offshore from the east-southeast. Again, very good conditions, clean lines.
So, the takeaway? A flat first week and a half, then a solid run from the 17th through the 22nd, with the 21st morning being the pick of the bunch. Long range, but the signs are promising.
Rusty.
