The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our stretch of coast.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We're staring down the barrel of a long, flat spell. From now, right through until the 26th of July, the wave energy is just pathetic. We're talking combined energy readings mostly in the teens, twenties, and thirties – that's flat to weak. The swell heights barely hit 3ft, and the winds are all over the place, mostly cross-on or cross-off. The water is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only thing going for us. For a beginner spot like Westward Ho, it's just not worth paddling out.
Now, there's a glimmer of hope if you're patient. The action finally starts to pick up on the 27th of July, Monday morning. A proper swell shows up, pushing 6ft from the west with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 341, which is a real kick in the pants. The bad news? The wind is cross-on from the WNW at 12 mph, so it's going to be choppy and a bit of a mess. This is a beach break, with that onshore breeze, it's going to be a bit of a battle. The afternoon holds similar size at 6ft, but still cross-on.
The 28th of July, Tuesday, is a bit smaller but still got some push. The morning sees 5ft from the west with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is still a solid 206. Again, the cross-on wind from the NNW at 12 mph will keep things messy. The afternoon drops to 4ft.
If you're desperate for a wave, the 27th and 28th are the only real standouts in the entire 16-day window. Even then, the quality will be poor because of the wind. For a beginner-friendly spot, those 6ft waves with a cross-on breeze are going to be a handful. It's a real shame, because the swell is there, but the conditions just aren't coming together. Honestly, with that size and onshore wind, the setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle guys.
So, there you have it. A whole lot of nothing for a week and a half, then a couple of days where the swell shows up but the wind spoils the party. The good news is, the forecast can always change, so keep your eyes peeled.
Rusty.
