The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Westward Ho!. I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty grim with no real standouts. The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a bit of a surprise.
We’ve got a very long stretch of poor surf conditions. It starts right now, with Wednesday morning offering rain showers and a weak 3ft swell from the west, with a short period of 6 seconds and a cross-onshore breeze at 12 mph. The combined energy is a weak 89. It’s choppy and not worth paddling out for. Wednesday afternoon and Thursday are just as bad, with onshore winds and poor conditions.
The only real hint of something half-decent comes on Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We get a tiny 1ft swell from the west, with a long period of 10 seconds, and a nice cross-offshore breeze from the NNE at 9 mph. It’s clean, but the energy is only 58. At best, it’s surfable but very ordinary – not exactly a day to call in sick for. After that, the surf drops right off into tiny, weak waves, with periods of clean conditions but no real swell to work with.
There’s a bit of a pulse of swell energy showing up around the 31st of August, with a 7ft to 7ft swell from the west, but the wind is fresh onshore or cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. That’s definitely not a beginner-friendly size. The energy values are high, around 695 to 799, but the wind and conditions will ruin it. The pattern continues into early September with marginal surf and questionable conditions.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. If you’re desperate, the cleanest window is that Saturday morning, but don’t expect much. The rest of the 16 days, you’re looking at a lot of flat spells, poor winds, and messy surf. It’s one of those runs where the forecasts can change, but for now, I’d keep the board in the car and wait for a better window.
Rusty.
