Right, let me have a look at what's on offer – or, should I say, what's not on offer. I'm Rusty, and I'm looking at Westward Ho! for the next couple of weeks.
First thing's first – the water is sitting at 63°, which is a notable 4° warmer than average for this time of year. That's good news if you're thinking of a dip without a thick suit, but the surf itself... well, it's a tough one.
The pattern is pretty grim. We start off with a bit of pulse on Thursday the 2nd of July, with a 6ft swell from the west, but a cross-on breeze from the northwest at 16 mph is going to leave it choppy and messy. The combined energy is moderate at 424, but it's paired with "poor surf conditions". That sets the tone. We then see the swell drop through the rest of that week and into the next, with a gap that stretches for days.
Truth is, there's not a single standout session here. The whole 16-day window looks flat or blown out for traditional surfing. The best you could hope for is the late afternoon of Friday the 10th of July, where we get a clean offshore breeze from the ESE at 12 mph, and the swell bumps up a little to 4ft. But the period is a short, weak 5 seconds, and the combined energy is only moderate at 102. It's described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – not the kind of thing to get excited about.
This spot, Westward Ho!, can sometimes offer a wave, but for a paddle surfer, this run is a blank. There's a window from early July through to mid-month where you'd be lucky to find a rideable wave. If you've got a kite, the stronger onshore winds on the 2nd and 3rd of July might look more interesting for that sort of thing, but for a traditional surf, we're in a drought.
Forecasts can change, of course, and it can't stay flat forever, but right now, leave the board in the van.
