The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Westward Ho! over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty tough outlook for the next week and a half or so. The surf is small and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things chop city. You’ll see a few days where the swell bumps up a bit, but the wind just wrecks it.
The first hint of something half-decent arrives on Friday, the 21st of August. It’s not much – just a tiny 2ft swell from the W, but the wind swings to a light SE breeze, blowing cross-offshore. That means the surface should actually be clean for a change. The combined energy is only weak (91), but for a beginner spot like this, a clean 2ft ankle-to-knee high wave is actually pretty fun. It’s the best of a bad bunch for the start of the run.
Then it’s back to small, messy conditions all the way through the end of August. There is a massive spike in energy on the 27th of August – we’re talking a strong 10ft swell from the W with a combined energy reading of 1616. But don’t get excited. The wind is a cross-on 16 mph, the surf quality is marked as poor, and at that size, it’s way too big and blown out for beginners. Even for experienced crew, onshore 10ft waves at a beach break are just a washing machine.
We finally get another window of hope on Monday, the 31st of August. The swell is a solid 6ft from the W, period is a short 7 seconds, but with a light SSW breeze creating a light cross-shore. It’s still pretty dicey and lumpy, but the combined energy is moderate (459) and the wind isn’t trying to kill it. It's a marginal call, and you’d be checking the tide, but it’s the only day in the entire run that has any sort of potential for a proper wave.
As for the water temp, it’s about what you’d expect for this time of year here in the UK – nothing wild, just average.
So, really, Friday the 21st is your stealth pick for a quiet, clean session on the small stuff. If you want something with a bit more push, you’re gambling on Monday the 31st of August when the wind looks lightest.
Otherwise? It’s a long, frustrating wait.
Rusty.
