Table - best surf conditions forecast for Westward Ho over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here.
To be straight with you, looking out over the next 16 days from this Wednesday morning, the 8th of July, this isn't going to be a classic run for Westward Ho. The surf is tiny and pretty much stays that way for the whole stretch. There are no standout swells and no glory days to get excited about. We're looking at a long, quiet spell where you're mostly battling onshore slop or howling offshore winds that blow right through the little bumps. Honestly, there’s a big gap of poor conditions that runs all the way from now until the end of the period with nothing worthy of a proper recommendation.
Let’s break it down. The week kicks off today, Wednesday the 8th, with tiny 2ft swell under glassy conditions in the morning, but the wave quality is really poor. That afternoon it gets cross-onshore and choppy. Not worth a paddle. Thursday the 9th is more of the same limp 2-2ft stuff with messy cross-shore wind.
Friday the 10th is the closest we get to a silver lining. The morning session shows 2ft from the west with a period of 9 seconds and a clean offshore breeze from the east. The combined swell energy is still very weak at 79, and the report says surfable waves but very ordinary. It’s the best of a bad bunch. For a beginner-friendly spot, this is about as good as it gets right now. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report there.
After that, it all falls apart. From Friday afternoon all the way through to Thursday the 23rd of July, the swell drops to between 0.3ft and 1ft. We get days of howling offshore winds (22-28 mph) which blow the tiny waves flat, or cross-onshore winds that chop up what little there is. The combined swell energy plummets into single digits and low double digits (9-24). There’s nothing to ride. The only thing to note is that on very small days with strong wind and a beach break setup like this, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than trying to paddle a surfboard.
So, the honest truth: don’t get your hopes up. For this area, a blank run like this is pretty normal. Forecasts can change, but right now, you’re better off finding something else to do for the next couple of weeks.
Rusty.
