The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you. This is a tough one to read. I've been looking at the charts for Towan, and honestly, for the next couple of weeks, we're in a bit of a dry spell. The forecast is showing a whole lot of nothing for a solid week. We've got a stretch from the 20th right through to the 27th of August where the conditions are just... poor. The wind is messy, the swell is tiny, and it's just not worth paddling out for. You'd be fighting a losing battle against onshore winds and weak, choppy waves.
The first real glimmer of hope, and I mean a glimmer, doesn't come until the afternoon of the 26th. We get a little bump of 3ft from the west, and finally, some offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph. The energy is moderate (203) and the face is clean. It's surfable, but only just. If you're desperate for a paddle, it's the best we've seen in a week.
Then things get interesting. The morning of the 27th of August is the standout. The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the east at 3 mph. The swell is still small, 3ft from the west, but with a period of 10 seconds, it's got some push. The wave energy is moderate (177) and for that brief window, it's going to be clean as a whistle. That's your window. That's the one to try and get on. The water is about 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a nice bonus.
After that, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The wind swings back onshore and the swell stays small. We get a bit of a pulse on the 28th, 4ft from the WSW by the afternoon, with a fresh offshore wind from the SW at 22 mph. The energy jumps up to moderate (236), but the forecast still calls it "poor surf conditions." It's a frustrating one.
The biggest swell of the whole period shows up on the 29th of August. Saturday morning we see 7ft from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is strong (597). But the wind is a cross-offshore from the WNW at 16 mph, keeping it clean. However, at 7ft, that's pushing into expert territory. It's a powerful, short-period swell, which means it'll be dumping hard. For the average punter, this one is a pass.
The rest of the run into September is a slow fade. We get another spike on the 3rd of September with a 7ft west swell, but the wind is a near gale from the SW at 31 mph. That's not surfing, that's survival. The energy is up there (501), but the wind will make it a washing machine. Honestly, for the whole 16 days, the only real window where you could have a fun, clean surf is the glassy morning of the 27th of August. Don't sleep on it.
