The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf, to be honest. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing but small, wind-blown slop. The good news is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s a long tunnel and it’s gonna be a while before we see it.
The week starts off flat and messy. Monday the 17th, we’ve got a weak 3ft W swell at 8 seconds, but it’s crossed up by a moderate west wind. The wave energy is weak, sitting at 130. It’s not doing anything for us. Tuesday and Wednesday are more of the same – a touch more size but the period is dropping to 6 or 7 seconds, which is just wind chop. The energy is still weak to moderate, ranging from 150 to 331.
There’s a slight bump in energy on Thursday the 20th, with the swell pushing to 6ft and the period stretching to 9 seconds. But the wind goes cross-shore and it’s lumpy. The energy value is 600, which is moderate, but the quality is just not there. Friday and the weekend are a write-off with tiny, short-period swells and onshore winds. We’re looking at ankle-biters. Don’t even bother checking the buoys.
We’ve got a real flat spell from Friday the 21st through to Monday the 24th, where the surf is just about non-existent. You’d be lucky to find a ripple. There’s a glimmer of glassy conditions Monday morning, but with only 1ft of swell, it’s a lake.
Things start to stir a bit from the 25th, but it’s still not good. A fresh south wind keeps things clean-ish, but the swell is only around 3ft to 4ft and the period is short. It’s not worth the paddle. We get a near-gale on the 26th that just messes everything up further. The following days are just messy cross-shore junk.
Then we finally see something of note. On Friday the 28th, we get a proper offshore wind from the SSW at 30 km/h, and the swell is starting to show some life at 7ft with an 8-second period. The energy jumps up to 579, which is moderate. The wave comment says it’s 'marginal', but with that offshore wind, Towan could be actually breaking. This is the first thing that might be rideable. But it doesn't last.
Saturday the 29th jumps up in size to 8ft, but the wind swings to the northwest and turns everything to chop. And Sunday the 30th is ruined by a strong SW wind, even though it’s offshore, it’s just too strong to make it easy to paddle out. The energy is strong, at 476, but the wind will make it a battle.
Now, the standout. The real highlight is on Monday the 1st of September, which is over a week away. We’ve got a 8ft to 10ft W swell pushing in with an 11-second period. That’s a proper groundswell. The energy is very strong, hitting 2066 on Monday afternoon. The wind is offshore from the SW and moderate. Towan is going to be big and powerful. The period is 11 seconds, which is right at the edge of being long period. At a beach/harbour break like Towan, this long-period swell might break a bit straight, but with that offshore wind, it could be epic. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
So, to sum it up: the next two weeks are mostly a bust. There’s a bit of a tease on Friday the 28th, but the real winner is that Monday the 1st of September swell. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but that is your best bet by a long shot.
Rusty.
