The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s brewing for our local patch.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and frustrating. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, and it’s going to be a real test of patience. The first real glimmer of anything surfable doesn’t pop up until the 28th of July, so gear up for a solid ten-day wait with nothing worthwhile.
Right now, from the 18th all the way through to the 27th, it’s a write-off. Small, weak, messy swells with cross-onshore winds. The energy is low, and it’s just not worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re waiting.
The only break we’ve got to go on is Towan. It’s a sheltered beach/harbour, best for beginners when there’s something to ride, but it takes a northwest swell to really get it going. That’s the one we’re hanging our hat on.
The first day that looks even remotely interesting is Tuesday the 28th of July. The morning session is the pick of the fortnight. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the WNW, and the wind is swinging to a cross-offshore from the WSW. That’s clean. The combined energy is moderate at 149, and whilst it’s not big, it’s surfable. The conditions are ordinary, but better than anything else we’ve seen. The crowd factor is something to be aware of here – Towan can get busy, so don’t expect a quiet one.
After that, the 29th brings a bit of an offshore breeze from the SSW, with a smaller 3ft WNW swell. It’s clean, but really small. Things go flat again from the 30th onwards, with onshore winds and tiny waves. The 2nd of August actually turns glassy by the afternoon, but the swell is only 1ft, so it’s a flat, pretty paddle more than a surf.
To be honest, the standout window is the morning of Tuesday the 28th. That’s the one to aim for. Everything else is a waiting game.
Rusty.
