The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with the same outlook in feet and miles. Let’s be straight: the next 16 days at Towan are a tough watch. After a poor start, we get a four-day window of “okay, maybe” from Thursday 27 August through to Sunday 30 August, but even then it’s not the kind of surf you’d write home about. The rest of the period is mostly small, windy, or just plain messy. For a beach/harbour setup that’s sheltered and exposed to a W swell, the outlook is slim.

Right now, into Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August, it’s dead flat–tiny 2ft to 2ft of weak W/NW swell with light NE winds. Combine that with a combined energy of just 90 (Saturday afternoon) and it’s borderline zero. The water is 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s no comfort when there’s nothing to ride. Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 August are even worse, with fresh E winds and cross-onshore junk – combined energy drops to 24–90. Not surfable.

Wednesday 26 August brings a tiny sign of life: clean conditions with 2ft of W swell at 8 seconds, but combined energy is only 39–46 – still too weak to get excited. Beginners might nose around, but it’s not worth the paddle.

Then, Thursday 27 August is the first real sniff. Offshore SW wind at 18 mph sweeps across 3ft of WSW groundswell at 12 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 426 (moderate). That period is getting long, and though it’s not huge, that offshore wind will groom it. Towan being a sheltered beach/harbour, those long-period lines might hold up okay. The catch: it’s only a score of 1 out of 10, so it’s marginal – tide could be a factor. Still, if you’re desperate, this is the best of a bad bunch. Crowds are often here, so expect company.

Friday 28 August morning is the standout. Offshore WSW wind at 12 mph, 5ft of WSW swell at 9 seconds, and combined energy of 346 (moderate). That’s the biggest, cleanest surf of the outlook. 5ft is right on the edge for beginners – you’ll want a bit of experience. The wind is moderate offshore, so it’ll be clean. Afternoon gets gusty with WNW 25 mph, so morning is the window.

Saturday 29 August sees the swell bump up to 7ft, but that’s a lot of raw W swell at 8 seconds with cross-offshore winds of 22 mph. Combined energy hits 639 (strong) – it’s powerful, but messy. That’s expert-only territory, and the quality is poor. More like a kite session than a surf day.

Sunday 30 August morning gives a final chance: 4ft of W swell at 6 seconds (short period, weak), with offshore SW wind. Combined energy is 132 (moderate). It’s surfable but ordinary. After that, the second week from Monday 31 August onward falls apart. Strong cross-offshore winds, 0.5ft to 7ft of short-period swell, and combined energy mostly under 100. Clean conditions but nothing to ride. The long period 17-second swell on 2 September is just 0.5ft – a whisper.

For the best on offer, I’d say Friday 28 August morning is the pick: 5ft, 9 seconds, clean offshore wind, and moderate energy. Get in early, because by afternoon the wind’s up. The Thursday 27 August afternoon is a close second for the dedicated. Otherwise, this is a long, quiet spell for Towan. Hang tight, forecasts can change.

Rusty.
