The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow start, to be honest. The first proper surf doesn’t show up until the morning of Monday the 31st of August. Before that, we’ve got nearly a week and a half of very small, choppy, or just plain messy conditions. The water is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus for the session.
The first real standout, and honestly the best bet in the whole window, is Monday the 31st of August. The morning session at Towan is looking good. We’ve got a solid 7ft swell rolling in from the west, with a gentle offshore breeze from the southwest. That’s clean, lined-up, and should have some proper push. The combined energy is a strong 638 (moderate wave energy), so it’s got some beef. It’s a beginner-friendly beach/harbour setup, but with that size, it’ll be more than enough for an intermediate to have a blast. Just be aware that it can get crowded here, so you’ll want to be early.
The following day, Tuesday the 1st of September, keeps the run going. The morning again looks promising, with a 7ft west swell and light cross-offshore winds. The combined energy is still strong at 520 (moderate wave energy). It’s a bit less than Monday, but still a very solid session. The afternoon on Tuesday drops off a bit, as the wind picks up and the swell backs down.
After that, things get a bit messy again. We get a spike of 7ft from the northwest on Thursday the 3rd of September, but the wind is cross-shore, and the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit of a lumpy, close-out mess. Not one for the logbook.
The final weekend, the 5th of September, fades out into small, clean but weak waves. A couple of nice mornings for a longboard or a foiler, but nothing to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: the run from Monday the 31st of August through Tuesday the 1st of September is your window. Early starts and clean conditions. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off or a gamble.
