The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at the forecast for Towan. It’s a bit of a quiet stretch coming up, I’ve got to be honest with you. The swell is tiny and the winds are mostly messy, so there’s not a lot to get excited about for the next week or so. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing weird there.
The first few days, from Wednesday the 15th through to the end of the week, we’re looking at tiny 1ft to 2ft swell from the west or north, with a short period around 5 to 9 seconds. The wind is cross-onshore or onshore for most of it, so it’s going to be choppy and weak. The combined wave energy is low, around 19 to 41 (19 to 41), which is basically nothing. Not worth paddling out for.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th see a little bump in size, up to 3ft to 4ft from the north, but the wind is fresh and cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. The energy is a bit better, hitting 65 to 96 (65 to 96), but it’s still poor surf conditions. Not a great look.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st drop back down to small, weak swell with a mix of onshore and cross-onshore winds. The period on Tuesday creeps up to 10 seconds from the west-northwest, which is a bit more promising for shape, but the swell height is only 1ft, so it’s just not enough.
Now, there is a proper standout window, but it’s a long way off. On Saturday the 25th, we finally get a proper pulse of swell. The morning brings 5ft from the north-northwest with a 6-second period, and the wind is cross-shore, so it’s only slightly choppy. The energy jumps to 245 (245), which is moderate. The afternoon holds that 5ft from the north with a 6-second period, and the wind turns cross-offshore, making it clean. That’s the best on offer across the whole 16 days, but it’s still a week and a half away, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The swell direction is from the north, which is not the optimum west for Towan, so it won’t be perfect, but it will be the biggest and cleanest we see.
After that, Sunday the 26th has a quick drop-off with a fresh offshore wind from the west-southwest, but the swell is only 3ft to 2ft, so it’s clean but small. The rest of the period fades into tiny, clean but weak surf.
Honestly, if you’re a kite surfer, the stronger winds and lumpy conditions on the 18th and 19th might be more interesting than paddle surfing. The takeaway is: there’s a long gap of small, poor surf until Saturday the 25th, which is the only day that offers a real chance for a wave. Fingers crossed it holds.
