Right then, folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local stretch.
Right now, the outlook for the next couple of weeks is pretty grim. We’ve got a run of small, weak surf and it’s going be a long wait before anything worth paddling out for shows up. The water temperature is sitting at about 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re staring at flatness.
The first proper sniff of anything comes on Saturday the 5th of July, but to be honest, it’s still poor. We’re looking at a weak 3ft swell from the WNW at Towan, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is a very modest 133 (moderate), and while the wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze, the waves themselves are just ordinary. It's surfable if you’re desperate, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
That pretty much sets the tone for the whole first week. There are a few mornings with clean conditions and light winds, but the swell is tiny—mostly below 3ft—and the energy is weak, often in the double digits or low triple digits. Tuesday morning the 8th has some clean-ish conditions, but it’s a piddly 2ft. There’s a real gap of nothing worthwhile from now right through until Friday the 11th, which is over a week away.
On Friday the 11th of July, we get a spike of energy with a short-period 4ft swell from the NNW, giving a combined energy of 208 (moderate). But the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, making it lumpy and poor. Not worth it.
The only faint glimmer in this whole outlook comes on Friday the 17th of July. The afternoon shows a jump to 6ft from the W, with a period of 8 seconds and combined energy shooting up to 438 (moderate). The wind is a gentle cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. It’s a marginal forecast, but this is the best we’ve got on offer by a long shot. The size is getting into the range where it’s too much for beginners but fine for those with a bit of experience.
Other than that, the rest of the second week fades back into small, weak, and mostly onshore or cross-shore winds. Nothing else stands out.
So, to sum it up: hang tight. There’s a long, flat stretch ahead. The best chance of anything halfway decent is that Friday the 17th of July, but don’t hold your breath. For now, the board stays in the car.
Rusty.
