The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks at Towan. I'll be straight with you, it's a bit of a slow burn.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a real flat spell. For the first ten days or so, from the 14th of July right through to the 23rd, there's just nothing doing. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the combined energy is weak, barely cracking 100 (85 max). It's a write-off for any kind of decent paddle. You'd be better off with a kite than a surfboard for most of that stretch.
Things finally start to show a pulse around the 24th of July. Friday morning is the first real glimmer of hope. We get a glassy window with a light offshore breeze from the WSW, which is a huge plus. The swell bumps up to a modest 3ft, but it's a long-period groundswell from the WNW at 12 seconds, giving it some proper push. The combined energy jumps to a solid 271 (moderate), and the water temperature is a balmy 65°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. That's a notable little anomaly. The waves will be clean and glassy, but with energy from that direction, it might break a little straight on the beach. It's the best we've got, but don't expect a world-class session.
The 26th of July sees the swell size pick up to 6ft from the W, but the period drops to a short 7 seconds. The wind is cross-shore from the SE, which isn't ideal, and the combined energy is strong at 389. It's a bit of a messy, bumpy prospect, and that size is getting up there for beginners.
The 27th of July brings the biggest swell of the period, a 8ft from the W with a 9-second period and a whopping 828 combined energy (strong). That's a lot of water moving. A morning onshore wind from the NE keeps it lumpy, and at that size, it's really only for the experts. The conditions are described as marginal, so it's a pass for me.
After that, the 28th and 29th of July offer some cleaner but smaller conditions with cross-offshore winds, but the energy is already fading. The 29th morning has a 6ft swell from the NW with a clean cross-offshore wind, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it will be a bit soft and sectiony.
Bottom line: The whole first half of the forecast is a total dud. The best bet is the morning of the 24th of July, with that glassy, clean, long-period groundswell. The 26th and 27th have more size but worse conditions. It's a waiting game, but the forecasts can change, so keep your eyes peeled.
