The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a pretty slow start around here. Towan is a sheltered beginner-friendly beach and harbour break, and the water’s running a touch warmer than normal at 66°F, just a little above average for the time of year. The first week is mostly a write-off for anything decent.
We’ve got a real gap to start. From Wednesday afternoon through to Saturday morning, the 24th, there’s no decent surf to speak of. The swell is tiny, and the wind is mostly cross-off or cross-onshore, keeping things messy. The combined energy stays low, between 91 and 156 (weak energy), so you’re better off doing something else.
Things stay quiet through Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th. Swell drops to just 0.7ft from the WSW with a long 14-second period, but the energy is almost nothing (38) and the wind is onshore or cross-onshore. Not worth paddling out.
Tuesday the 25th is still flat, with a tiny 1.0ft from the WNW and energy down to 20 (weak). The wind does swing cross-off in the afternoon, but there’s just no swell to ride.
Wednesday the 26th shows a little more life. The morning has a small 2ft SSW swell with cross-off wind and clean conditions, but the energy is still weak at 101. The afternoon improves a bit with 3ft from the west, offshore wind, and clean surf, but it’s still ordinary.
Thursday the 27th afternoon is the first real standout. Swell builds to 5ft from the west with a 10-second period, giving a moderate energy of 420. The wind is cross-off and clean, so it’s rideable, but it’s still only a marginal call. The break is sheltered, so the size is manageable.
Friday the 28th morning offers 5ft west swell, 8-second period, with light WNW cross-off wind and clean conditions. The energy is 258 (moderate), but the period is short, so it’ll be a bit crumbly.
Saturday the 29th looks better all day – 4ft to 4ft from the west, cross-off winds, clean, with moderate energy up to 281. Still not a ripper, but surfable.
Sunday the 30th afternoon sees a jump to 6ft from the west, offshore wind, and clean. Energy is 377 (moderate). It’s still only ordinary, but the wind is right.
Monday the 31st morning has the biggest swell so far at 6ft from the west, but the wind is a strong 45 km/h offshore, making it hard to paddle into. The energy is strong at 580, but the wind is a factor. The afternoon is cleaner with cross-off wind.
Tuesday the 1st of September stays around 7ft from the west, moderate energy near 600, with cross-off winds and clean conditions. Still marginal.
Now for the best bet. Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is the standout. You’ve got 5ft west swell, 9-second period, light cross-off wind, and clean conditions. The energy is 450 (moderate), and the break is sheltered, so it should be the pick of the fortnight. The wind is light and offshore, so it’ll be glassy.
Thursday the 3rd afternoon sees a jump to 8ft from the WSW, but with a fresh SSE cross-off wind at 30 km/h. The energy is very strong at 1304, but the size is pushing into expert-only territory, and the wind is fresh, so it’s a marginal call.
In summary, the first week is a bust. The best window is Wednesday the 2nd of September morning, with clean, manageable 5ft west swell at Towan. After that, Thursday the 3rd afternoon gets big and strong, but only for the experienced crew.
