Table - best surf conditions forecast for Towan over the next 16 days.
Alright mate, let’s take a look at what’s on offer for our local patch. I’ll be straight with you, the forecast is a right old mess for a good while. The water temp is around 16°, about normal for this time of year, but the surf is far from it.
For a solid week and a half, from Wednesday the 8th through to the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July, we’re looking at flat to tiny waves. Heights are barely scraping 3ft most days. The energy is pathetic, with combined swell energy readings between 90 and 155 (weak to moderate). The wind is often cross or onshore, making everything choppy and lumpy. We get a few brief windows where it cleans up, like Wednesday afternoon the 15th and Thursday the 16th, with clean wind conditions, but the swell is still only 1ft to 2ft. Not a reason to swap your plans. There’s a proper gap of over a week where you’d be better off doing something else.
The one flicker of light is Thursday the 23rd of July. The swell finally shows up, hitting 7ft in the morning and pushing up to 8ft in the afternoon from the WSW and W. The combined energy rockets up to 550 (strong) in the morning and a massive 1093 (very strong) by the afternoon. This is a real groundswell at 8-9 seconds. The wind goes offshore, strong and clean. But 8ft is expert only, and with that kind of power, a word to the wise. Towan is a beach/harbour setup, so a powerful, close-out swell like this with a short period can be a messy beast. It might even be better suited for kite surfing than paddling. The only real standout is Thursday the 23rd of July. The morning is doable for strong intermediates, but the afternoon is for the hardcore. Before that, don’t bother. It’s a grim run.
Later.
