Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for Droskyn Point.
Honestly, mate, the next 16 days are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions ahead, with only a couple of brief windows where it might be worth a paddle. The first proper surfable day isn’t until Wednesday the 8th, and even then it’s nothing to write home about. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your toes off.
We start with a real flat spell from Sunday the 5th through Tuesday the 7th. Tiny 2ft to 3ft swell from the west, with light onshore or cross-onshore winds. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting between 76 and 133, and the conditions are just poor. Not worth getting wet.
The first real chance comes on Wednesday morning the 8th. The swell is still small at 2ft from the west, with a 9-second period, but the wind goes glassy. That’s a major positive. The energy is still weak at 88, and the waves are described as surfable but very ordinary. It’s small, clean, and the crowds are often around here, so you might have some company. If you’re desperate for a slide, this is the pick of the early week, but keep your expectations in check.
After that, it’s back into the doldrums from Thursday the 9th right through to the 14th. The swell stays small, the wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the energy rarely tops 140. On Sunday the 12th afternoon, there’s a brief moment with 5ft from the NNW and glassy wind, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and weak. Still, it’s the best of a bad bunch that weekend.
The pick of the *entire* outlook, if you can call it that, is on Wednesday the 15th. The morning has a clean 2ft from the west, but the wind is offshore from the southeast. That’s a rare clean window for a point break like this. The energy is weak at 108, but the waves will be clean. It’s small, but it’s the best you’ll see. Crowds are often a factor here, so you might have a few others out.
The second week, from the 16th onwards, is a write-off. Strong onshore winds, lumpy 5ft to 7ft swell, and a lot of fresh breeze. The 20th of July has a solid 7ft from the west with a 10-second period, but the wind is a strong 40 km/h onshore. That’s just a washing machine. The energy is a massive 819, but it’s completely unsurfable. For kite surfers, that might be a different story, but for paddle surfing, it’s a hard no.
So, to sum it up: the only real standout is Wednesday morning the 15th for the clean offshore wind, but it’s small. Otherwise, Wednesday morning the 8th is your best early bet for glassy conditions, even if the waves are tiny. Don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
