The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks around here. We’ve got one spot to work with, Droskyn Point, and honestly, it’s a bit of a waiting game for anything decent.
The next few days are a write-off, I’m afraid. Thursday and Friday are dominated by strong onshore and cross-onshore winds, with moderate to fresh breezes making a mess of things. The swell is there, around 7ft, but it’s just slop with that wind. The combined wave energy is moderate (718) but it’s not doing us any favours.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t come until Saturday the 22nd of August. The wind swings around to a light cross-offshore from the northeast, and the combined energy drops to 129 (moderate). The swell is a tiny 2ft, so it’s small, but the conditions will be clean. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Sunday and Monday are even smaller, with the swell bottoming out.
The next highlight is a bit of a long shot, but keep an eye on Thursday the 27th of August. The morning looks the cleanest of the run, with a gentle cross-offshore breeze and a clean-looking wave. The swell is 4ft from the west, with a period of 10 seconds, giving it a bit of shape. The combined energy is moderate (251). It’s not a classic, but it’s the first session that looks genuinely surfable.
Then there’s a bit of a stormy spell again. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th get blown out by strong winds, with the swell jumping back up to 6ft to 7ft but with poor conditions. The crowd factor is likely here, too, as it's a fairly consistent spot that gets crowded often.
The real standout, the one that has me a little excited, is the very end of the forecast. Take a look at Monday the 31st of August. The swell picks up to a solid 10ft from the west, with a period of 11 seconds. The combined wave energy is a massive 2446 – that’s very strong. The wind is a cross-shore, so it’ll be lumpy, but the sheer power is there. This is for experienced surfers only, as it’s well over 8ft. The offshore wind on Sunday the 30th of August is a better bet, with 6ft swell and a clean offshore wind from the SSE, but the wave energy is a bit lower. Overall, the best of the bunch is likely that Monday the 31st, if you’re good enough to handle it, but the Sunday morning the 30th provides cleaner conditions.
After that, things settle down again into the first week of September with smaller, cleaner but unremarkable surf. It’s a patchy outlook, but there are a few windows to work with.
