The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are a tough watch for Droskyn Point. This is one of those stretches where you’re better off keeping the board in the van and checking the forecast again in a few days. There’s a big, blank run of poor surf that lasts from now all the way through to the end of August, before a couple of late opportunities pop up at the very end of the window.
We kick off with a real weak start. Monday the 17th has some waist-high slop around 3 ft from the WNW, but the wind is on it at 12 mph, and the period is short. The energy is weak (106), and it’s just messy. Through the rest of the week and into the following weekend, things actually get worse before they get worse – lumpy, choppy, cross-onshore winds are the norm. Wednesday the 26th sees a bit more size – up to 7 ft – but it’s onshore and messy, with moderate wind. Not a paddling day.
The first real standout, and it’s only a marginal one, shows up right at the tail end. On Monday the 31st of August, the morning is still pretty average with a 6 ft WNW swell and moderate cross-shore wind, but the afternoon session is the pick. The swell drops a touch to 4 ft, but it’s coming from the WNW with a very long period of 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind goes cross-offshore, and the wave state is described as clean. Energy is strong at 1100. This is the kind of late-afternoon session where Droskyn Point could actually link up and offer some nice, lined-up walls. Just be aware, with that long period, the waves might bend a bit and the sets will be spaced out, but the paddle out will be easier.
We also get a pulse on Thursday the 27th of August. Solid, big swell – 12 ft from the west with a period of 11 seconds, and energy is very strong (2631). That’s expert-only territory. The wind is on it from the NW at 19 mph, so it’ll be a raw, heavy, and challenging day. Not for the faint-hearted. If you’re a strong charger, you might find something, but the average surfer should stay out of the water.
A few other moments: Sunday the 30th has waist-high, weak energy (139), and wind is on it. Nothing to write home about.
So, to sum it up: the entire first week is a write-off. The second week has a couple of moments – the big, expert-level swell on the 27th, and the much cleaner, long-period groundswell on the afternoon of the 31st. If you’re chasing something, that Monday afternoon late in the month is your best bet for clean, rideable waves. Until then, enjoy the time off.
Keep your eyes on the horizon,
Rusty
