The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim start. The first real, worthwhile surf doesn’t show up until well into the second week. For the first ten days or so, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. Small, weak, and messy. The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross-off or cross-shore, and the swell is tiny. There’s a few windows where it’s glassy or clean, but the waves are just too small to get excited about. You’ll be spending more time floating than riding. The combined energy stays weak, barely cracking 80 for most of that stretch. It’s a proper dry spell.
Now, the one spot that *might* offer a little something is Perranporth. It's a fairly exposed beach, so it needs a bit of oomph. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is a fair bit warmer than usual for this time of year – a nice surprise if you’re in the water.
The first little flicker of hope comes on Tuesday, July 22nd. The morning has some light offshore wind from the east, with a tiny 2-foot swell from the west. The combined energy is still only moderate, but it’s surfable. It’s not going to be a classic, just small, clean waves for a longboard or a foamie. The afternoon holds similar shape, with a light cross-off breeze.
The real tease, and the only true standout in this whole two-week outlook, is Friday, July 24th. The swell finally shows a bit of life. By the afternoon, we’re looking at a 4-foot swell from the west-southwest, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps up to 213, which is a solid moderate push. The catch? The wind is a cross-onshore from the west-southwest at 16 mph. It’s going to be choppy and a bit messy. This is more for the experienced crew who don’t mind a bit of a fight. Beginners might find it a bit too much and a bit too rough. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got.
After that, it stays on the small side with onshore winds right through to the end of the period. The swell on the 25th and 26th has a bit more energy, but the cross-onshore wind keeps it lumpy. It’s a frustrating run, honestly. For the most part, this setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle guys, especially on those days with stronger cross-onshore winds.
So, to sum it up: the first ten days are a write-off. The only real hope is Friday the 24th of July, for a punchy, choppy afternoon session. Keep your expectations low, and you might just find a few. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a patience game.
Rusty.
