The Lowdown

Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next fortnight or so. I’ll be honest, it’s a mixed bag, and we’ve got a big gap of nothing much to start with. The first real chance for a paddle comes on Friday morning, 21st August.

For the first few days, the wind is just howling from the west and north-west, and the surf is all over the place. Thursday 20th August sees a proper 8ft WSW swell with a 9-second period, but that onshore wind makes it a mess. That’s too big for learners anyway, and not clean enough for anyone else. The combined energy hits 799 (moderate) but it’s just a washing machine.

Then we hit the first real gap. From Friday afternoon, 21st August, right through to Monday morning, 25th August, the swell is tiny. We’re talking 0.7ft to 1ft at best. It’s flat. Nothing to get excited about. You’d be better off cleaning the wetsuit.

Right, the first proper standout comes on Tuesday morning, 25th August. The wind swings light from the south, giving us a clean, cross-off breeze at Perranporth. The swell is 3ft from the west-northwest with a 10-second period. The combined energy is 144 (weak), but it’s clean. It’s a small, gentle wave. Good for a beginner session or a longboard.

The next highlight is a bit of a jump. On Tuesday morning, 1st September, we’ve got a 6ft west swell with a 9-second period coming in. The wind is from the south at 12 mph, clean and cross-off. The combined energy is 449 (moderate). This is the best of the run. It’s got some push, and the wind is right. It’s a good size for intermediates, and the offshore wind will make it look nice. The water temp is about average for the time of year, sitting at 66°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for August.

The rest of the period is a bit of a slog. We get some size, like 6ft on Saturday 29th August, but the wind is always onshore or cross-onshore, trashing it. A lot of it is just poor surf conditions. If you’re desperate, you could get wet, but it’s not going to be inspiring.

So, the best on offer is that Tuesday morning, 1st September, and the smaller Tuesday morning, 25th August. Choose your week.

Rusty.
