Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be honest with you, looking at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of small, messy surf ahead with very little to get excited about. The only real highlight is a brief window a fair way out, but more on that later.
Let’s start with the here and now. The first half of July is looking pretty flat and uninspiring. The water’s sitting at a balmy 62°, which is a touch warmer than average for the time of year, but that’s about the only nice thing I can say. For the first four days, from Sunday the 5th through to Wednesday the 8th, the swell is tiny, mostly around 2ft to 3ft, coming from the W or WNW, with weak energy readings (76 to 133). The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making for poor, bumpy conditions. Not worth paddling out.
We get a tiny glimmer on the morning of Wednesday the 8th. The wind goes glassy – dead calm – and the swell is a small 2ft from the west, but it’s weak with a combined energy of just 88. It’s surfable, but only if you’re desperate for a slide. Don't expect much. After that, from the 9th right through to the 18th of July, it’s a grim run. The swell stays small, the wind is choppy or too strong, and the reports are all "poor surf conditions". We’re looking at over a week of nothing really doing.
Now, for something that’s promising but a long way off. If you’re patient, mark your calendars for Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of July. The swell finally starts to kick. On Saturday afternoon we get a clean, 5ft swell from the west, with a light 6 mph easterly offshore wind. The combined energy is a moderate 153. It’s still just "surfable" but it’s the best we’ve seen. Then on Sunday the 19th morning, we’ve got a 5ft west swell with a clean offshore breeze from the ESE at 9 mph, and the energy jumps up to 218. It’s still just "ordinary" but it’s the standout of the whole forecast. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it won’t have much grunt but it will be the cleanest and biggest we’ve seen in a while. The wind dying on Sunday afternoon means it won't last.
Honestly, for a place like Perranporth, this is a pretty blank run. The surf is just not cooperating for a good two weeks. Keep an eye on that Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th for the best chance of a wave, but don't plan your whole life around it just yet. Forecasts change.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
