The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for our local stretch.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a tough outlook for the next fortnight. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 65°, but that’s about the only easy thing going for us. We’ve got a long gap of nothing but poor conditions right through the end of August and into the first few days of September. The swell is there, but it’s almost always paired with a cross-onshore wind that just messes it up, especially for a fairly exposed beach break like Perranporth. The combined energy values are all over the place, from weak (16) right up to strong (638), but the wind comment keeps reading “poor surf conditions.” It’s a real shame.
There is a brief glimmer very late in the period. On the morning of Thursday, the 3rd of September, we get a short window of glassy conditions with no wind. The swell is tiny, only 2 ft from the west with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is weak (53), so it’s barely moving. It’s not worth paddling out for, but it’s a sign the pattern might be shifting.
The only real standout that might be worth a look is the morning of Friday, the 4th of September. The forecast shows a 5 ft west swell with a period of 8 seconds, and a gentle cross-shore wind. The combined energy is moderate (296). It’s still a “marginal” call, but it’s the best we’ve got in the whole run. The crowds are “sometimes” a problem here, so you might have to share the leftovers. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only window where the wind isn’t completely against us.
So, to sum it up: there’s a whole lot of nothing for the first week and a half, then a very slim chance on the morning of the 4th of September. Keep your eye on the forecast, because it can’t stay this poor forever.
Rusty.
