The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Perranporth are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We've got a long, dry spell of surf that’s just not worth your time.
The water is sitting at 65°F right now, which is a solid 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year. It’s like a bath out there, but that’s about the only thing going for it.
The first real chance of anything rideable doesn't show up until Thursday the 23rd, and even then it’s a bit of a stretch. The morning session has a tiny 3ft swell from the north but with a light cross-offshore breeze, you might squeak out a couple of grovelly ones. The energy is weak, sitting at just 88 (combined energy), and it’s only a 6-second period, so it’s gonna be fat and slow. It’s surfable, but don’t expect any barrels.
We then hit a dead zone for a solid week. From Thursday afternoon all the way through to the end of the month, the wind is a nightmare – mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, and gusting up to 19 mph. The swell is tiny, under 2ft, and the period is all over the shop. This is a total write-off for paddle surfing. If you’ve got a kite, you might find some fun, but for the rest of us, it’s a beach day.
The best we’ve got on offer is a glimmer of hope on the morning of Saturday the 1st of August. The wind swings offshore from the ESE at a glassy 3 mph, cleaning up a 2ft swell from the WNW. The period is a nice 10 seconds, giving it a bit of push, and the energy is moderate at 101 (combined energy). It’s not a huge swell, but with conditions that clean, Perranporth could actually be fun. The swell direction is north-west, and while the optimum is west, it’s close enough to work. Just keep in mind it can get a crowd here sometimes.
After that, the wind goes bad again into the second week. We get a bigger pulse of energy on the 2nd of August, with the swell hitting 4ft and the combined energy shooting up to 220, but it’s all ruined by a moderate cross-onshore wind. It’s a frustrating pattern – the ocean wants to give us waves, but the wind won’t let us have them.
So, to sum it up: the morning of the 1st of August is your only real standout. Everything else is a battle against the wind or just flat. It’s a rough run, but the forecast can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
