The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, we’re sizing up the next 16 days at Perranporth and it’s a tough go. Most of this stretch is junk—choppy, cross-onshore winds and weak, messy swell. There’s a big gap in decent surf right from the start.
The one bright spot lands on Saturday, 22 August. Morning brings 0.6m of west swell with a period of about 10 seconds, combined energy just 114 (weak to moderate), but the clincher is a light offshore easterly breeze. That’s clean, glassy conditions. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have company, but this is the best of the lot. Water temp is about normal for this time of year.
After that it’s dry. Sunday the 23rd through the end of August: tiny waves, cross-shore or onshore winds, poor surf. Friday 28 August sees some size—1.9m to 2.0m—but it’s hammered by strong cross-onshore wind and a short 6- to 8-second period. The combined energy is 275 to 442 (moderate to strong), but with wind like that, it’s a blown-out mess. This is better suited to kite surfing than paddling.
Saturday 29 August brings the biggest swell: 2.2m from the west, 8-second period, combined energy at 623 to 638 (very strong). But again, cross-onshore wind trashes it. At that size, it’s for experts only.
From Sunday 30 August onward, size drops, winds stay messy, and there are storms and rain in the mix. No more windows of clean surf. So your only play is Saturday 22 August morning. After that, we’ve got a long, bleak run. It’s a quiet spell, but forecasts can change. Hang tight.
Rusty.
