The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Perranporth.
Truth be told, the next week or so is looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf quality from now right through the end of August and into the first few days of September. The wind is mostly onshore, cross-onshore, or just too strong, leaving the ocean chopped up and messy. The swell that does show up is short-period, weak stuff, with combined wave energy staying well under 100 for most of it. There’s a tiny window of small, clean waves on Sunday the 23rd afternoon with a 1ft SW swell and a gentle cross-off breeze, but it’s barely worth waxing up for. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year around here.
The real standout, and the only time I’d get excited, is Sunday the 6th of September. The afternoon session is looking like the pick of the entire forecast. The wind goes glassy from the east at just 3 mph, and we’ve got a solid 10ft swell from the WNW pumping in. The combined wave energy is massive, but the period is a moderate 9 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell with plenty of energy. This is serious, expert-level surf. The size alone (over 8ft) means it’s only for the experienced crew. The glassy conditions will make it clean, but with that size and power, expect a proper challenge.
The only other glimmer is Monday the 7th of September. The morning brings a 6ft W swell with a 10-second period and a fresh offshore breeze from the ESE, which should clean it up nicely. Combined wave energy is still hefty, so there’s plenty of push, but it’s a step down from the previous day. The afternoon sees a bigger 8ft WSW swell, but the wind cranks up to 19 mph, keeping it a bit more on the edge.
So, for the next week, I’d leave the board in the van. The real action is all about that Sunday the 6th. Keep an eye on it, because long-range forecasts can change, but if that glassy, 10ft swell holds, it’ll be a day to remember for the experts.
Rusty.
