The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead. The swell is tiny and the wind is mostly rubbish. For the first week, there’s barely a wave to get excited about, and the few that show up are blown out or have next to no energy. We’re looking at a long, flat, and messy stretch.
Sunday, July 19th – We start with a real dud. Perranporth is seeing tiny 3ft swell from the NNW, but it’s a short-period, weak windswell. The combined energy is a measly 46 – that’s weak stuff. Water temp is 65°F, which is over 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s notably warm. The morning has a cross-offshore breeze, but it’s still poor. The afternoon goes glassy, but with only 2ft on offer, it’s flat and not worth the paddle.
Monday, July 20th through Saturday, July 26th – Honestly, it’s a write-off. The swell barely gets above 3ft, and when it does, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, chopping everything up. The period is short, mostly 5-7 seconds, so no real power. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Friday, July 24th with a light offshore ESE wind and a tiny 1.0ft, 8-second swell, but it’s too small to surf. The energy readings are all in the double digits – weak, weak, weak.
Sunday, July 26th – Things start to change. The swell picks up to 5ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon, from the west, with period around 6-7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 206 (moderate) and then 316 (strong). But here’s the catch – the wind is howling from the NW at 15-19 mph, cross-onshore, and it’s lumpy. It’s a powerful, messy, blown-out mess. This is more of a kite-surfing situation than a clean paddle-surfing one.
Monday, July 27th – More of the same. Swell holds around 6ft, energy is strong (348 and 369), but the wind is still cross-onshore from the NNW at 15-19 mph. Choppy and lumpy. Experts only, and even then, you’ll be fighting the wind.
Tuesday, July 28th – The swell drops to 4ft, but the wind finally goes cross-shore, not onshore. Still a bit of chop, but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen in a while. The energy is still moderate at 255. Still not a standout, but a slight improvement.
From Wednesday, July 29th onward, the swell fades back into the doldrums. By August 3rd, we’re looking at 0.7ft and 1.0ft waves with hardly any energy. It’s a long, flat close to the outlook.
So, if I’m being honest, there’s nothing that I’d call a true standout in this 16-day window. The best chance for a surfable wave, if you’re desperate, would be the Monday morning, July 27th – it’s got the size (6ft) and energy (348), but the wind is a nightmare. It’s a session for the big-wave crew and the kites, not the average weekend warrior. The water is warm, but the forecast is a bleak one.
Keep your eye on the charts, but for now, I’d be finding something else to do.
Rusty.
