The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m looking at the full 16-day window here, and honestly, it’s a tough stretch for us at Perranporth. The pattern is pretty bleak overall, with a long run of poor surf conditions stretching through most of the period. There’s a big gap from now until the tail end of the window where things just don’t line up well.
The water’s running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 65°, but that’s about the only thing that’s friendly.
We start off Wednesday afternoon with a weak 5ft swell from the west, but the period is a short 6 seconds and the wind is howling onshore from the west at 18 mph – total mess. The combined swell energy is weak at 156, and the conditions are just poor. This carries on through Thursday and Friday, with a little more size (7ft on Thursday) but still onshore wind and short period swells, so no good.
Saturday morning on the 22nd actually offers a tiny window of clean surf. The swell drops to 2ft from the west, period 9 seconds, and wind is a light offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. The combined energy is weak (123), and it’s surfable but very ordinary. It’s clean, but don’t get your hopes up for anything meaningful.
Then we hit a real dead zone. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of August, the swell is tiny – 0.7ft to 1ft – with very long periods (14 seconds) but the energy is way too low. Even with offshore winds on Monday and Tuesday the 24th and 25th, the combined energy is in the teens and twenties. Nothing to ride.
There’s a slight flicker on Thursday afternoon the 27th, with a 5ft west swell at 10 seconds and clean cross-off wind from the south. The combined energy climbs to 420 (moderate), and it’s rated as marginal. Could be a session if you’re desperate, but it’s not good.
The window you really want to watch is the very end of the forecast, on Thursday the 3rd of September. Morning shows a 4ft west-southwest swell with clean cross-off wind from the southeast – moderate energy at 287. But the afternoon is where it gets interesting: 8ft from the west-southwest, period 9 seconds, combined energy hitting 1304 (strong!). The wind is fresh from the SSE at 18 mph, cross-off and clean. It’s rated as marginal, but that’s the standout of the whole 16 days – the biggest swell and strongest energy by far. That’s expert territory at that size, and it’s worth keeping an eye on the forecasts.
Bottom line: September 3rd afternoon is the only real standout. Everything else is poor or tiny. Hang in there.
