The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water temperature at Perranporth is sitting at 65°F, which is a solid 4° warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s a proper treat, so you’ll be fine in a spring suit or even a shorty if you’re tough enough.
To be honest, the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch from Tuesday the 14th all the way through to Friday morning the 24th where the surf is just too small, too messy, or the wind is all over the place. There’s a few little knee-high wobblers on the 19th with a clean offshore wind, but the energy is weak (85) and it’s nothing to get excited about. You’ll be battling for a crumbly close-out.
The real standout action starts to build on the morning of Friday the 24th. That’s the first proper window we’ve had. The wind goes glassy, and we get a clean, long-period groundswell from the WNW at 3 ft. The period is 12 seconds, with solid energy (271) – that’s the kind of pulse that will put some shape into the beach. Perranporth should be offering some lined-up rights and lefts in the morning. This is the best on offer in the first half of the outlook, but it’s a short-lived window before the cross-onshore wind ruins it in the afternoon.
Then, keep your eyes on Sunday the 26th. The morning sees a jump in size with a 6 ft swell from the west, but the period drops to 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit fat and soft. The wind is offshore though, and the energy is strong (389). It’s surfable, but you’ll want a board with some volume.
The true highlight of the whole 16-day run is Monday the 27th. We’re looking at a 8 ft west swell with a solid 9-second period, and the combined energy is cranking at 828. The wind is light and cross-off from the ENE. That’s a big call, but for the experienced lads, the morning will be firing. 8 ft is into expert territory, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. The afternoon is still good, dropping to 6 ft with light winds and clean conditions. That’s your best bet of the whole outlook.
After that, it gets messy again with onshore winds and rain, so make the most of the 27th.
Rusty.
