The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the next 16 days for Perranporth, and I won’t lie – there’s a lot of waiting here. The first 13 days are pretty much a write-off for any decent surf. We’ve got small, wind-affected slop most days, with a few windows where it’s clean but the size is nothing to write home about. The real action doesn’t start to look promising until the very end of the stretch.
The water temperature at Perranporth is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the 5/4 at home for a bit longer.
We finally get a glimmer of hope on the morning of July 29. It’s still small, with a 3ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is light and cross-off from the SE, so the surf will be clean. The combined energy is only 76 (weak), so it’s not going to be a world-beater, but it’s a chance to get wet without wrestling a washing machine.
The standout of the whole outlook, and the only day I’d really get excited about, is the afternoon of July 29. The wind goes glassy – dead calm – for a few hours. The swell nudges up to 4ft from the W, with a combined energy of 167 (moderate). The period is 7 seconds, so it’s a short-period wind swell, but with that glassy surface, it’ll be the cleanest, most user-friendly the beach gets. It’s not a big wave, but it’ll be smooth and fun for an intermediate. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so with a clean afternoon on a weekday, you might get a few other souls out, but it won’t be a zoo.
After that, Thursday July 30 and Friday July 31 see a bigger push of swell – 5ft to 6ft from the W, with combined energy jumping to 584 (strong). But the wind is onshore and strong, 12–22 mph, so it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. That kind of size and power in a beachbreak with cross-onshore wind is more interesting for the kite crew than for paddle surfing.
Bottom line: If you’ve got a window, aim for the afternoon of July 29. That’s your best bet. Everything else before that is either flat, blown out, or both. The second week is a bit of a tease – more swell but no good wind. It’s a waiting game until the very end.
