Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Whitley Bay has on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough outlook. We’re looking at a real flat spell to kick things off. There’s no surf worth paddling out for in the entire first week of July. From Thursday the 2nd right through to Sunday the 12th, the swell is tiny, the period is short and weak, and the combined wave energy barely ever gets into double digits – a measly 24 at best on the 2nd, then mostly single digits. It’s all cross-offshore winds, but with barely any wave to work with, that doesn’t help. You’re looking at an 11-day gap with no real surf on offer.
The first glimmer of something, and I use that term loosely, comes on Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th. We get a small pulse from the ESE pushing through about 2ft to 3ft of swell. The period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s going to be weak and a bit lumpy. The combined energy finally climbs a little, hitting 69 on Monday afternoon and 78 on Tuesday afternoon. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the East and NNE, so expect a bit of chop. It’s not great, but it’s the only time the wave heights get above a foot.
Then, on Thursday the 16th of July, we get the standout of the whole window. The morning session sees a light S wind at just 3 mph, giving us a glassy, cross-offshore condition. The swell is 2ft from the ESE, with the period stretching to 6 seconds, and combined energy gets to 50. For this stretch, that’s as clean as it gets. It’s still small, but for a beginner-level wave at a spot that can be inconsistent, Thursday morning is your best bet.
For the rest of the second week, it fades back down to tiny, weak lines. The water temp is sitting around 57°, which is pretty average for this time of year.
Keep your expectations in check, lads. There’s some small dribble, but nothing to get the heart racing.
Rusty.
