The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the Whitley Bay forecast.
Honestly, mate, I’ve seen more action in a car park. Looking over the next 16 days, there’s nothing here that’ll get a surfer properly frothing. The entire window is a flat and poor run. There is a 16-day gap with zero recommended surf. It’s a real bummer.
The only time we get any size worth mentioning is this Sunday, the 19th of July. Swell from a NNE direction will push up to 7ft with a period of 9 seconds and moderate wave energy (601). That’s decent power, but the wind will be a cross-onshore at 16 mph and the conditions will be choppy. For a beginner-friendly spot like Whitley Bay, swell over 5ft can be a bit much anyway, and with that wind, it’s just a messy, poor session. Water temp is showing at 60°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, but you won’t care because you’ll be fighting the chop.
Things drop off hard after that. From Monday the 20th onwards, the swell tanks. You get a bit of a pulse on the 20th morning with 4ft, but the wind is onshore and wave energy is already down to a weak 187. After that, the heights keep falling and the wind just won’t play ball.
There are a couple of glassy mornings – like Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd of July – but with swell barely scraping 2ft to 3ft and a weak energy reading (43 and 75), you could paddle around on a foamie but you won’t be riding anything worth talking about.
The rest of the fortnight is a string of tiny, clean or cross-off days with swell under 2ft and energy readings in the low double or single digits. The wind will be offshore at times, but there’s just no swell to back it up. By the 2nd and 3rd of August, the energy picks up just a little, nearing 98, but the swell is only 3ft and the wind shifts onshore again.
If you were hoping for a standout, there isn’t one. Not a single session cracks a score above 1. The whole 16-day forecast is a write-off for surfing. Maybe look into kiting if the wind holds, but for paddle surfing, you’re better off waiting for the next proper low to roll through. Forecasts can change though, so don’t give up hope entirely.
Rusty.
