The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Whitley Bay.
Honestly, mate, it's a bit of a grim outlook. We're looking at a long, long stretch of mostly nothing to get excited about. There are a few days with some size, but the wind just ruins it every time. If you're desperate for a paddle, there's a tiny window, but you'll have to fight through a lot of junk to get it.
The first bit of real hope comes on the morning of Saturday the 22nd of August. We've got a 7ft swell rolling in from the NNE, and the energy is pretty solid at (862). But here's the kicker – the wind is a cross-on from the NNW at just 6 mph. That's light enough that it might clean up a bit, but the forecast still calls it marginal. It's not ideal, but it's the best of a bad bunch early on. The swell period is a short 8 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy and fat.
After that, it drops off. Sunday the 23rd of August morning might give you a tiny 4ft wave from the NNE with a light cross-off wind from the WNW at 3 mph, making it clean. But it's weak with only (153) energy and the report calls it "very ordinary". That's about as good as it gets for a proper surf.
The rest of the month is a write-off. We've got a lot of cross-on and onshore winds, mostly from the north or east, with very little swell. The water temp is sitting around 59°, which is pretty average for the time of year, nothing special.
There's a notable moment on the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. The wind goes completely glassy at 0 mph, but the swell is a pathetic 1.0ft from the north. It's a complete flat spell. We then have a long gap of nothing until a potential last look on the 2nd of September. That morning there's a clean 2ft from the east with a cross-off wind, but again, it's just ankle-snappers.
Considering the consistent poor conditions, this looks more like a stretch for the kitesurfers than us paddle surfers. We just can't get a clean, rideable wave with any power. The wait continues, lads.
Rusty.
