The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Whitley Bay over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim outlook. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for any kind of decent surf. There’s a solid block from now all the way through to the end of July with nothing worth paddling out for. You’re looking at a gap of about two weeks with no real recommendations.
The main issue is that the swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore. The water temp is sitting at 60°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, but that’s about the only positive.
Starting off on Tuesday, 14 July, we’ve got some weak 3ft swell from the NE at a rubbish 6-second period. The combined energy is a measly 58, and with a cross-on NNE breeze at 12 mph, it’s just choppy and poor. That theme carries right through the next week. Wednesday and Thursday are even smaller, with swell dropping to 2ft and then 1ft. Friday sees a bit of a bump in wind, but still cross-on and messy.
The weekend of 18-19 July is the most interesting, but only in relative terms. Saturday morning sees the swell creep up to 4ft from the NE, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 147 – that’s moderate energy, but it’s still a cross-on breeze. Saturday afternoon gets a bit of push with 5ft from the NE and a longer 10-second period, energy jumping to 398, but again, it’s onshore. Sunday hits 5ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon, with the period stretching to 8-9 seconds and energy over 400, but the wind is cross-on or onshore. For a beginner spot like Whitley Bay, this swell is getting too big and messy, and the conditions are just plain poor. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak dribble for the rest of the month. There are a couple of glassy moments on the 22nd and 26th of July, but with swell barely 1ft, there’s simply nothing to ride. The waves are just not there.
So, plain and simple: there’s no standout session here. The entire forecast is a dud. If you’re desperate, you could check the beaches on the 18th or 19th of July for a messy, onshore 5ft, but don’t expect much. It’s one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for the area when the angles don’t line up. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the shed.
Rusty.
