The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Whitley Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, for the first week and a half, it’s a tough slog. You’re looking at a big dry spell from now until the end of August. The surf is pretty much flat or just tiny, onshore mush for days on end. There’s a little bump on the 22nd, Saturday afternoon, with a 5ft swell from the NNE, but the wind is howling straight onshore and the combined energy is a weak 290. It’s a no-go. Sunday morning the 23rd has a glassy moment with a 4ft NNE swell, but it’s labelled as very ordinary and the energy is only moderate at 149. You could get a few knee-high crumble burgers, but it’s not worth paddling out for.
The only real window of opportunity that shows any promise is around the 3rd of September, Thursday morning. That’s a standout. The swell jumps up to a clean 5ft from the NNE with a period of 9 seconds, giving a solid moderate energy of 346. More importantly, the wind is offshore from the SW, which is perfect for this spot. The water temp is a seasonable 59°, nothing unusual there. This is the best call on offer.
For a beginner, this 5ft swell is on the top end of what’s manageable, but with that offshore wind, it’ll be clean and lined up. The break is inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for the sets, but when they come, they’ll be looking good. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so you might have a few others with the same idea.
Thursday afternoon the 3rd stays good with a 4ft swell and clean offshore winds, though the energy drops a touch. That’s your second best option. After that, it fades away again into the weekend with tiny, onshore slop. So, the long-range call for Thursday the 3rd is the one to circle. It’s a bit of a wait, but it’s the only proper surf in the whole run.
Rusty.
