The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the stretch ahead for Whitley Bay.
First off, the water temp is sitting around 59° – that’s pretty much spot on normal for this time of year, nothing to get excited about there.
The outlook starts off pretty grim. We’ve got a solid gap of flat or poor conditions right through the tail end of August and into the first few days of September. Honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for from the 21st right through to the 3rd of September. That’s a two-week stretch of tiny, weak, or messy surf. The few days with a little bit of height, like the 21st and 22nd, are ruined by strong cross-onshore winds – 16 mph on Friday and 9 mph on Saturday, just choppy, blown-out junk. You’d be better off doing something else.
The first real glimmer of hope comes Thursday, 4th September. That’s the standout. The morning shows a solid 8 ft of swell from the NNE, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind swings offshore from the SW at 9 mph. That’s the ticket – clean, offshore conditions with a decent push. The combined energy is a strong 742 (moderate to strong), and it’s only going to get better through the afternoon, with the offshore breeze holding and the energy climbing to 757. This is the best on offer, and it’s looking good for experienced surfers. Beginners might find 8 ft a bit much, but for the rest of you, this is your window.
Then Saturday, 5th September, keeps the run going. The swell is still a meaty 7 ft from the same NNE direction, period a touch longer at 9 seconds, and the wind is cross-offshore from the WNW at 6 mph in the morning. The energy is massive – 1405 (very strong). That’s a lot of water moving around. The waves will have some real power, but the clean conditions make it an excellent session for the experienced crew. The afternoon drops a little in quality with a stronger cross-off breeze, but it’s still very surfable.
So, overall: the first two weeks are a write-off. Then we get a one-two punch on the 4th and 5th of September that’s worth marking on the calendar. If you’re after the best, that Thursday morning with the offshore wind and solid 8 ft NNE swell is the peak. It’s a long wait, but it’ll be worth it.
Rusty.
