The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Whitley Bay over the next couple of weeks. Straight up, I’ll be honest with you – it’s a pretty flat and quiet period for the most part. The swell is small and the wind is often messy, so there’s not a lot to get excited about.
We kick off on Wednesday the 15th with tiny 2ft waves from the NNE, but the wind is onshore and the energy is weak (29). It’s just poor. That pretty much sets the tone for the next week. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 60°, but that won’t help the surf.
Thursday and Friday stay small and choppy. By Saturday the 18th, the swell tries to push up to 5ft, with the combined energy climbing to moderate levels (235), but it’s all cross-onshore wind and messy. Not a surfer's wave. Sunday the 19th actually sees the biggest swell of the whole run – 6ft from the NNE with a period of 9 seconds, and energy getting up to 587 – but again, the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a lumpy, bumpy mess. For a beach break like Whitley Bay, that’s no good for anyone but maybe a kite surfer.
Things drop right back down again Monday and Tuesday. Then, on Wednesday the 23rd, we finally get a bit of a window. The morning shows 5ft swell from the NNE, but crucially, there’s a light cross-offshore wind from the west. The data says “clean” and “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not a classic, but compared to the rest of the week, it’s the only real chance. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it won’t be punchy, but it’ll be rideable. This is your best bet, and it’s still only a 1 out of 10 in the guidance.
After that, it’s back to tiny dribble for the rest of the month. The 26th shows a moment of glassy conditions, but with only 1ft of swell, you’re just floating. There is a long gap of days with no real recommendations after the 23rd. The 30th of July offers a little 2ft swell with a clean offshore wind, but it’s tiny.
Overall, it’s a lean run. The only standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Thursday the 23rd. It’s not one for the memory bank, but it’s the only time the wind and swell line up enough to get a few grovelly ones. Don’t expect much.
