Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whitley Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at what’s coming our way for Whitley Bay, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough outlook. This stretch is looking pretty flat and blown out for the bulk of the next couple of weeks. If you’re itching for a paddle, you’ll want to be patient, because there’s a long quiet spell to get through first.
The pattern starts off with very little on offer. We’re looking at small, weak, and messy conditions right through the first week. From Friday the 10th through to Thursday the 17th of July, the swell stays tiny, mostly around 0.7 ft to 2 ft, with short periods and poor surf conditions across the board. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be worth getting wet unless you just want to sit on your board. There’s no real stand-out session in this stretch.
We hit a bit of a bump in the road on Saturday the 18th of July. On the Saturday morning and afternoon, the swell picks up to 5 ft from the NNE, but it’s accompanied by a fresh breeze at 19 mph from the north, making it lumpy and cross-onshore. The wave energy jumps to a moderate 153, but the quality is still rated as poor. It’s a bit of a frustrating one – there’s some power there, but the wind’s just ruining it. This could be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, frankly.
There’s a glimmer of hope right at the tail end of the outlook. On Monday the 20th of July, the wind finally swings offshore and goes light. We get some clean conditions, but the swell has dropped right back to just 2 ft from the NNE. The water temperature at the start of the period is sitting at 57°, which is exactly average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The period from Friday the 24th of July morning through to Saturday the 25th of July afternoon shows some clean conditions again, but the swell remains tiny – around 0.7 ft to 2 ft and mainly from the ESE. The wind is offshore or cross-offshore, which is good for the surface, but there’s just not enough energy to push any decent waves through.
So, what’s the call? The best bet, if you’re really desperate for a surf, is looking at Monday the 20th of July. It’s the only window with clean conditions and a tiny bit of shape, but honestly, it’s not a standout. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off for decent waves. It’s a blank run, but that’s not unusual for this area when the swell just doesn’t line up with the wind. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s time to save your energy.
Stay patient, and I’ll see you down the line.
Rusty.
