The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is pretty grim, with nothing really worth paddling out for until the very tail end of the month. You’re looking at a solid week and a half of flat, junk surf or blown-out conditions. The few pulses that pop up are small, weak, or come with terrible wind.
The first real glimmer of something surfable doesn’t happen until Monday, 31 August at Tenby (South Beach). Even then, it’s only a marginal call. We’ve got a building swell coming in from the WSW, hitting around 6ft, but the period is a short, weak 8 seconds. The combined swell energy is moderate (463), but the real issue is the wind. It’s blowing cross-off from the SW at 12 mph, which will keep things fairly clean, but the wave comment suggests the tide or general quality is just “marginal.” It’s not going to be pretty, but it’s the best we’ve got that day.
The following morning, Tuesday, 1 September, offers a slight improvement. The swell drops a touch to 6ft, still from the WSW at 7 seconds, but the wind turns lighter from the WSW at 9 mph and goes cross-off. That clean surface (349 combined energy) might produce a few rideable lumps for the patient surfer. Again, nothing to write home about, but it’s surfable.
After that, it fades fast. The rest of the first week of September sees the swell drop back to tiny, gutless 1.0ft to 3ft junk, mostly onshore or choppy. The only other half-decent window is on Thursday, 5 September morning, when a tiny 2ft WSW swell meets a light offshore NW breeze at 6 mph, cleaning it right up. But at that size and with a weak 8-second period (51 energy), you’d be scratching for scraps.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Tuesday, 1 September. It’s the only day where the swell has some body, the winds are clean, and the combined energy (349) is just enough to make it interesting. It’s not big, not powerful, but it’s the cleanest, most surfable slot in a very long, dry run.
Don’t expect much else. The water is running much warmer than normal for this time of year at 66°, but that’s about the only highlight. If you’re desperate, keep an eye on 1 September morning. Otherwise, it’s a board waxing and coffee drinking kind of fortnight.
Stay patient,
Rusty
