The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Tenby (South Beach) over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The water temp is sittin’ at 67°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. It’s like bathwater out there, way warmer than we’d expect for August.
We’ve got a long, dry gap here. The first few days are basically a write-off. Tuesday the 18th through to Wednesday the 20th is just poor surf with tiny waves and junk winds. Thursday morning the 20th finally shows a pulse with 5ft from the W, but it’s only a 7-second period (weak sauce) and while the offshore NW wind is there, the combined energy is only 239 (moderate). It’s surfable, but it’s ordinary. That afternoon stays similar with 4ft from the WSW, a 9-second period, clean offshore NW wind, and a bit more energy at 291 (moderate). Still, nothing to write home about.
Then we hit another dead zone. Friday the 21st right through to Tuesday the 26th is all tiny dribble or blown-out junk. The wind is all over the place – onshore, cross-onshore, or just too strong. You’ll be paddling for nothing.
Wednesday the 26th morning offers a little relief: 3ft from the WSW, 8-second period, with a light WSW cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions. Energy is 159 (moderate). It’s a tiny window of clean, small waves, but it’s nothing special. That afternoon the wind picks up to 15 mph from the W, still cross-offshore, with 4ft from the SW, but it’s just clean little windswell.
The rest of the week from Thursday the 27th to Monday the 31st is a mess of strong winds, lumpy conditions, and onshore slop. The wind cranks up to 25-31 mph, and even when it’s offshore, it’s a near gale on Sunday the 30th afternoon – that’s not surfing, that’s survival.
Now, if you’ve got patience, there’s a glimmer. Tuesday the 1st of September morning is a true standout. We’ve got a solid 10ft from the WSW, an 8-second period, with a fresh NNW offshore wind at 22 mph. The combined energy is a meaty 953 (strong). That is a big, powerful, clean swell. The wind is offshore, so the faces will be clean. But look, at 10ft, this is strictly for experts. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s windswell – it’ll be a bit lumpy and won’t have that long, drawn-out groundswell feel. It’s a big, raw, powerful day. The afternoon drops to 8ft from the WSW, still offshore, energy at 773 (strong), but it’s still a big, powerful wave.
Wednesday the 2nd of September sees the swell drop to 6ft from the W, but the wind goes onshore and cross-shore, making it messy and choppy. That’s the end of the ride.
So, bottom line: the only day that’s worth getting excited about is Tuesday the 1st of September. That morning, with the big 10ft and clean offshore wind, is the best we’ve got. It’s a big, powerful, expert-only wave. The rest of the 16-day window is mostly small, blown-out, or flat. If you’re a beginner, stay away from the 1st – it’ll be way too big. For everyone else, it’s a long wait for one big, raw day.
Stay patient, lads. The ocean will sort itself out.
Rusty.
