The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks down at Wembury.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a write-off. There's a big old gap with nothing worth paddling out for. We're looking at a stretch from Tuesday the 18th of August right through to the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September where the surf is just poor. We've got a mix of cross-shore and onshore winds, lumpy chop, and tiny swell that barely registers. The energy is weak, mostly in the 13 to 103 range, and it's just not doing the job. A couple of those mornings on the 20th and 27th look clean with a light cross-off breeze, and the combined energy pushes up a bit (221 and 103), but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft to 4ft on a short period. It's not worth the effort. Honestly, with the onshore wind and that weak swell on the 28th and 29th, the setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle session.
Then we finally get a glimmer of hope. The only real standout, and it's at the very end of the forecast period, is the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. A gentle offshore breeze from the NNW will be grooming the waves, and we're looking at a clean 6ft of swell. The combined energy is a solid 284, so there's some proper push in the water. This is a groundswell with a 7-second period, so it won't be that long, drawn-out line, but it's going to be a hell of a lot more fun than anything else on offer. That offshore wind is the key here – it'll keep the faces smooth and make for some proper peaky waves.
Because this break at Wembury is a point break and can be inconsistent, a solid clean day like this is a real treat. The water temperature feels about average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about there in terms of a wetsuit change.
If you can hold out, that Wednesday morning looks like the one. Everything else in the first two weeks is a dust storm. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, that's your window.
