Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer here at Wembury over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t looking like a memorable run. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for any kind of decent surf. We’ve got a long gap right from the start, and it’s going to be a tough one.
The first day we see a wave on the cards is Friday the 3rd of July, but even then, it’s not good. We’re looking at a tiny 2ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting at just 85. On top of that, the wind is onshore and light, making for poor, messy conditions. That pattern just keeps going.
Through Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th, the swell drops even more, down to 1ft and 1ft. The wind does go cross-offshore at times, which cleans it up, but with energy figures of 55 or lower, there’s just nothing there to ride. It’s a flat spell.
Then from Monday the 6th right through to Tuesday the 14th of July, it’s a proper drought. For days and days the swell stays tiny, often below 1ft, with energy figures mostly in the single digits or low teens. There’s a bit of a tease on Monday the 13th of July, when the swell nudges up to 2ft from the WSW, with a period of 12 seconds and a combined energy of 138. That’s moderate energy, and the wind is cross-offshore and clean. But the forecast still calls it poor surf conditions, and with the water temperature anomaly being neutral, it’s just not enough to get excited about.
The last few days, from Wednesday the 15th through to Saturday the 18th of July, we’re back to tiny, weak waves with onshore or cross-onshore winds. The setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest. You’re not going to get a wave worth paddling for here.
So to sum it up: if you’re hanging out for a surf at Wembury, you’re out of luck for the next two weeks. The breaks are inconsistent at the best of times, and this blank run is a bit harsh, but it happens. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing on the horizon worth chasing.
