Table - best surf conditions forecast for Wembury over the next 16 days.
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. I’m not gonna lie to you, this sixteen-day stretch at Wembury is a tough one. We’ve got a long, long dry spell ahead before anything even starts to look like a proper surf. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Thursday the 23rd of July, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about.
For the first two weeks, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny, often below 2 feet, and the wind is all over the shop – mostly cross-shore or onshore, with some brutal gusts. You’ll see a few clean mornings here and there, like Saturday the 18th of July when the wind drops to glassy, but there’s barely any energy in the water. The combined wave energy is weak, mostly in the single digits or low teens. It’s the kind of setup that’s more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, especially with the strong cross-shore winds we’ve got in the middle of the week.
The water temperature is about 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re sitting there waiting for a wave that never comes.
Now, the standout, if you can call it that, is Thursday the 23rd of July. The morning session at Wembury (a point break) is the only time in the whole forecast that the conditions are described as “surfable”. We’re looking at a tiny 2 feet swell from the southwest, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is still weak at 51. The wind is cross-off from the north-northwest, which will keep it clean. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the only game in town. The crowds at Wembury can be a factor, but on a day like this, I doubt you’ll be fighting for a wave.
There’s a little more hope on Friday the 24th of July, with a similar 2-3 feet swell from the southwest, and the wind turning offshore from the north-northwest in the morning. Again, the energy is weak (48-57), and the period is short, but it’s clean and the most consistent option we’ve seen. For a beginner, this is actually your best bet – the size is small, and the offshore wind will make it look pretty.
Beyond that, the forecast is too far out to call with any certainty, but it doesn’t look like things are going to change dramatically. The second week is just more of the same small, weak swell.
So, to sum it up: we’ve got a long flat spell, then a couple of days late in the window that are just about surfable. If you’re desperate, aim for the 23rd and 24th of July. Otherwise, save your energy.
Rusty.
