The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is a tough one for us here at Wembury. Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a pretty grim stretch with some flickers of hope way out at the end. The first week and a half is basically a write-off. We’ve got a solid period of small, weak, and messy surf coming up, and the wind is often working against us.
We start off on Monday, the 17th of August, with a tiny 2ft swell from the WSW, but the water is a notable 66°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s a nice feeling in the water, but the surf is poor. The wind is a messy cross-shore, and the combined energy is weak (18). That sets the tone for the next several days.
The whole week from the 17th through to the 24th is a real struggle. We’re looking at days of small, inconsistent waves, often under 3ft, with a lot of lumpy, choppy conditions. The wind stays mostly cross or cross-onshore, wrecking any chance of a clean face. The 20th of August has a bit more energy (189) with a 3ft swell and a 9-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore, but the wave height is just too small to get excited about. The 22nd and 23rd are a joke, with waves dropping to 0.7ft. It’s a painful gap of about a week with nothing worth getting wet for.
Things start to look a little more interesting on the 29th of August. Saturday morning shows a solid 7ft swell from the WSW, with a 9-second period and a clean cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is massive (1131), which is strong to very strong. The only catch is that this is a significant swell, over 5ft, so it’s getting too big for beginners, and the report says it’s a marginal surf forecast. The wind is clean, though, so it might offer some decent, powerful sets for the experienced crew. This is the standout moment of the whole outlook, but it’s a one-off.
Then, we get another pulse on the 1st of September. Tuesday morning and afternoon serve up a 5ft swell from the WSW, with a long 12-second period. The energy is strong (717 and 744) and it’s a cleaner groundswell, which means better-shaped waves but longer lulls between sets. The wind is cross-onshore, which is a shame because it’ll chop up the surface a bit. This is the second best option, but still not perfect.
The rest of the period after the 29th gets messy again with strong winds and small, blown-out surf. For the week starting the 25th of August, it’s a lot of onshore wind and small, choppy waves. The 28th of August has a 6ft swell, but it’s hit by strong cross-onshore winds, making it a mess.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re a patient surfer, the 29th of August morning is your best bet for a clean, powerful session, but it’s a bit of a beast. The 1st of September is a solid second choice with a nice long-period swell, but the wind will be working against you a bit. The rest of the time, it’s a flat, choppy, or messy affair. Hang in there, the forecasts can always change, but this look is a bit of a bummer.
