The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at this forecast for Wembury. It’s a bit of a quiet one, to be honest. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty flat. The first real surfable day doesn’t pop up until the morning of the 30th of July, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. There’s a big gap of nothing from the start of the period right up until that date.
The only spot we’ve got here is Wembury, a point break that’s best with a south-west swell. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but it’s inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for sets. The water is sitting at 66° which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a shorty or even a spring suit.
The morning of the 30th of July brings the first bit of hope. We’ve got a moderate wave energy (140) and a swell from the west-south-west at 2 ft, but here’s the kicker – the period is 13 seconds, which is a nice long groundswell. That means proper, well-shaped waves, but with longer lulls between sets. The wind is a gentle cross-shore breeze, which is manageable, but the swell is tiny. It’s really not enough to get excited about.
The afternoon of the 31st of July sees the biggest swell of the whole period, with 4 ft from the west-south-west. The wave energy jumps up to 169, which is moderate. But the period drops to a short 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit of a messy, wind-swell slop. That’s a big caveat. And the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, so it’ll be lumpy and choppy. It’s not a good day for a paddle. For a more experienced wave rider, it might be worth a look, but for the average surfer, it’s a pass.
The rest of the days are just tiny, weak, and onshore. There’s a few mornings with glassy or offshore winds, but the swell is practically non-existent. You’d be better off finding a different hobby for a couple of weeks.
Wembury is a point break, but with this lack of swell and short period, the setup honestly looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on those windier days.
Keep an eye on the charts, but this one’s a real dud for the time being.
