The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Wembury over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet start, and we’re going to be waiting a good while for anything worth getting excited about.
Wembury is a point break, exposed to a SW swell, and it’s inconsistent, so don’t expect waves every day. For the first ten days, from Monday 17 August right through to Tuesday 25 August, it’s a real struggle. The swell is tiny, mostly under 1ft, and the combined wave energy is barely registering (12-40 on the energy scale). Winds are a mixed bag, often cross-off or cross, but the size just isn’t there. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there – just a typical late summer feel.
Things start to look a little more promising on Wednesday 26 August. The afternoon sees a jump to 5ft from the SW, with a cross-off NW breeze, giving us clean conditions. Combined energy hits 169 – that’s moderate. It’s still a bit of a long period swell at 6 seconds, so not exactly a groundswell, but it’s the first real pulse of energy.
The standout window, and the only one I’d really mark on your calendar, is Thursday 27 August. The morning brings 6ft from the SW, clean with a cross-off WNW wind, and combined energy at 504 – that’s strong, proper waver energy. The afternoon really cranks up: 6ft from the WSW, period jumps to 13 seconds, so that’s a proper groundswell, and the energy goes ballistic at 1100. Winds remain cross-off from the WNW. That’s the best on offer – a solid, clean, long-period swell. It’ll be powerful, so this one is for experienced surfers only; beginners should sit this out. Crowds are often around at Wembury, so expect company.
After that, it fades again. Friday 28 August drops to 3ft with lumpy cross-shore wind, and by the weekend it’s back to tiny, weak surf. There is a marginal pulse on Monday 31 August with 2ft and a very long period of 16 seconds (combined energy 235), but the onshore wind and small size kill it. Honestly, Thursday 27 August is your window. The rest is a write-off.
