The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this stretch of coast is looking pretty quiet for the next while. The whole 16‑day window is a real struggle. We’ve got only one break on the radar, Wembury, a point break that’s best with a solid SW swell. But to be honest, it’s inconsistent and often crowded, so we’re already fighting an uphill battle.
The first surfable hint doesn’t show up until Friday morning, 21 August—just small, 2ft waves from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a light NE cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but the combined energy is weak (56). That’s about as good as it gets for a while. After that, we’re looking at a long dry spell. Saturday through Monday, 22–24 August, swell drops to nothing—0.3ft to 0.7ft—with barely any energy. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the surf is plain poor. You’d be better off staying home.
Then we get a brief flicker on Wednesday morning, 26 August: 2ft from the WSW, 8‑second period, clean NNW offshore breeze, energy (64). It’s surfable but ordinary. After that, things get messy again. From Thursday, 27 August, onwards, the wind cranks up—strong south‑southeast to west‑southwest winds, 22–31 mph. The swell does pick up a bit, especially Thursday morning with 5ft from the west (474 energy), but it’s an onshore mess with a short period of 8 seconds, and definitely not worth paddling out for. The conditions are poor and the wind is too strong for clean waves.
The standout window, if you can call it that, is Tuesday morning, 1 September. That’s the best on offer across the whole outlook. We’ve got 8ft of SW swell, 7‑second period, and a clean NW cross-off wind. The combined energy is strong at 526. But with that size and short period, it’s a powerful, punchy wave—experts only. The wind will keep it clean, but the short period means it’ll be a bit fat and won’t have much shape. Given the inconsistency of Wembury and the crowds that often show up, this is a “maybe” session, not a sure thing.
The water temperature at Wembury is 66°F right now, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—nothing extreme, just a bit of a pleasant surprise.
So overall, keep your expectations low. There’s a lot of flat or poor-quality days. The best bet is that Tuesday morning, 1 September, for the experienced crew who don’t mind a bit of a gamble. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
