The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Wembury. It’s a point break, exposed to the southwest swell, and it’s inconsistent. Over the next 16 days, honestly, we’re looking at a pretty flat and quiet run for the most part. There’s a stretch from Monday, July 13th, all the way through to Saturday, July 25th, where the surf is just too small to bother with. We’re talking days of barely a ripple, with swell heights hanging around 0.3 ft to 1 ft. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, which keeps the water clean, but there’s simply no wave energy to work with. The combined energy values are mostly in the single digits or low teens – that’s weak, flat energy.
The only real glimmer of hope comes right at the tail end of the forecast. On Sunday, July 26th, the swell starts to show a bit of life. The morning sees a 2 ft swell from the WSW, period around 10 seconds, with a light cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to 111 (moderate). By the afternoon, it’s a bit bigger at 3 ft from the west, period 9 seconds, and the energy is up to 302 (moderate). The wind is onshore though, so it’ll be a bit choppy. That Sunday afternoon is the best of a very quiet bunch – it’s not a stand-out, but it’s something.
Monday, July 27th, keeps the swell around 4 ft, but it’s onshore and messy. Then on Tuesday, July 28th, the morning gives us a 5 ft swell from the WSW, period 7 seconds, with a slight cross-shore wind. The energy is 252 (moderate). The comment says “marginal surf forecast,” which sums it up. It’s too small for any real grunt, and the period is short, so it’ll be crumbly.
Water temps are a side note: on the first mention of surf, Monday July 13th, the water is 66°F, which is a whopping 5°F warmer than average for this time of year. Very unusual.
So, the honest truth: there’s nothing to get excited about here. If you’re desperate for a paddle on the 26th or 28th, you might find a knee-high wave, but don’t expect much. This spot is inconsistent, and this forecast proves it.
