The Lowdown
Right, grab a seat. I’m Rusty.
Honestly, for the next two weeks, there’s not a lot to get excited about on paper. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, messy, or just plain blown-out conditions. The one spot we’ve got to work with is Wembury, a point break, and it’s pretty inconsistent around here. The forecast is saying there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. For this area, with a break that’s inconsistent at the best of times, a blank run isn’t all that unusual.
We start off with a bit of a cruel tease. For the first week, from Saturday the 22nd of August all the way through to Friday the 28th, it’s a write-off. You’re looking at tiny waves, 0.6ft to 1ft, or if there is some size, like on Monday the 24th with a 3ft easterly, the wind is howling at 25 mph from the east, making a horrible cross-shore mess. The combined energy is weak at best, with values like 33 and 52. It’s just not worth paddling out.
The second half of that first week, from Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th, we do see the swell trying to pick up. Wednesday morning has a light offshore wind from the SSW with a small 1ft swell, but the energy is still low at 48. By Thursday the 27th, the swell jumps to 7ft from the SW, but it’s accompanied by a risk of thunderstorms and a strong cross-onshore wind. The combined energy is 604, which is moderate, but the conditions are just poor. This is one of those times where the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing. Friday afternoon the 28th has cleaner conditions with a cross-offshore wind from the NW at 28 mph and a 7ft SSW swell (525 energy), but that’s a howling strong breeze.
Now, if you’re desperate, there is one window that tickles the ears of a surf reporter. On Sunday morning the 30th of August, we get a brief moment of glassy conditions. The wind goes almost dead calm from the SSW at just 3 mph. There’s a 4ft SW swell (126 energy). The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” which is about the best we get. It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s the only time you might get a clean, small wave to yourself. Don’t expect much.
After that, it’s back to the grind. The week starting Monday the 31st of August is full of fresh breezes, lumpy cross-chop, and fading swell. By Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell drops back below 3ft with terrible period, and the wind is up again. We get a few cleaner moments early in the morning on Friday the 4th of September with a 4ft SW swell (159 energy) and a cross-offshore WNW breeze, but again, it’s only 4ft and a moderate breeze. Then the final weekend, the 6th of September, is just clean but tiny, with 1ft surf.
So, to wrap it up: don’t hold your breath. The only shout for a paddle is the glassy window on Sunday morning the 30th. Everything else is a miss. Forecasts can always change, but right now, this patch is dry.
Rusty.
