The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Wembury over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – it’s a lean stretch. The forecast is showing a real barren run for the first week and a half. We’re looking at a solid gap from now until around the 4th of September where the surf is just not worth paddling out for. There’s hardly any energy in the water, with wave heights barely a whisper and a lot of messy, cross-shore wind. You’ve got a bit of a swell showing on the 27th of August, with combined energy kicking up to 251 (moderate), but it’s blown out by onshore winds and the quality is poor. That’s a theme – the swell tries to show up, but the wind just ruins it.
The water temperature is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 65°F.
Now, if you’re patient, there’s one window that *might* give you something to get excited about. The real standout, and the only one I’d even point you towards, is the afternoon of the 4th of September. We’ve got a 6ft swell coming from the west-southwest with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 438 (moderate). The wind is set to go light and variable, swinging to a slight cross-shore, which should clean things up. The morning session that same day is a bit more iffy, with a bigger 8ft swell (1485 energy) but cross-onshore wind making it choppy and marginal. That afternoon window on the 4th is the best chance for a clean wave.
After that, the 6th of September morning shows some promise with a 7ft swell from the west-southwest (1057 energy), but it’s cross-shore and that’s a lot of size for a point break like Wembury, which is best for beginners. Anything over 5ft starts to get a bit much for the less experienced, and over 8ft like we see on the 7th is for experts only. The 7th of September has a clean-looking 8ft swell with offshore wind, but that’s a big, powerful wave for a point break.
So, to sum it up: expect a lot of flat, blown-out days. Your best bet is to keep an eye on the afternoon of the 4th of September. For the rest, it’s a waiting game – but forecasts can change, so don’t write the whole month off.
Rusty.
