The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Wembury look like a proper test of patience for any surfer. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with very little to get excited about.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, the surf is basically flat. Up until the 22nd of July, we’re talking about tiny waves, barely a ripple, with almost no energy. The combined energy figures are just sad, mostly in the single digits or low tens (e.g., 22, 34). It’s a real bummer. The water is currently sitting at 66°F, which is a massive 6°F warmer than average for this time of year – that’s very unusual, but it won’t make up for the lack of waves.
The first glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July. We’ll see a tiny pulse of swell from the east at 4ft, but with a period of only 4 seconds, it’s gonna be weak and fat. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ENE though, so it’ll look pretty. But honestly, the combined energy is only 47 (weak), so it’s barely surfable.
Things get a bit more interesting as we head into the second week. On Saturday, the 25th of July, the morning session offers a slight improvement. We’ve got 2ft of swell from the SW with a 7-second period, giving us a combined energy of 89 – still weak, but it’s the first time we get a “surfable” nod. The wind is glassy from the NNW, which is a huge plus for clean lines. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best we’ve seen.
The real standout, and the only one worth marking on your calendar, is Monday, the 27th of July. The afternoon is looking promising. A solid 4ft of swell from the WSW with a 9-second period is pushing through, giving us a moderate combined energy of 248. The best part is the wind: clean offshore from the north at only 6 mph. This is going to groom the wave into proper shape. The crowd profile at Wembury says it’s “often” busy, so you’ll want to be out there early or late, but with conditions like that, it’s worth dealing with a few folks. This is the one to aim for.
The next day, Tuesday the 28th, has a clean morning with 2ft from the WSW, but it’s a step down in size. Then Wednesday the 29th morning sees a bump to 5ft from the WSW, but the period is only 8 seconds and the cross-off wind is a bit strong at 16 mph, making it a more challenging, choppy proposition.
Overall, this is a tough stretch. The first week is a total washout, and the second week offers only a couple of brief windows. The 27th afternoon is the clear winner. Don’t hold your breath for the rest.
Rusty.
