Visitor reviews of Wembury surf break
(NOTE: Reviews may be edited by our content team for the purposes of ensuring accurate and relevant information)
“I live in Wembury and am disappointed to see some reports that are totally false.
[Editor writes...There is a serious misunderstanding here, but I include the review anyway as it has some very useful info. These notes below arise because the reviewer has mistaken our examples of what a score of 1 would mean with actual scores. The actual scores for Wembury have been high - for example in 3 reviews, scenery averages more than 4 out of 5. Nobody has claimed it is ugly and industrial. And the surf scores highly too. Sorry if our presentation was confusing - we'll look at clarifying it]
Scenery: ugly industrial backdrop - where? - just look at photos it is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Accommodation: no where to stay indoors - ok, no hotels but plenty of B&Bs and a camp-site just up the road. (1 mile from beach)
Entertainment: great local pub with frequent music gigs. If there is no surf, lie on your surf board and swim East of Wembury Beach, the are mini lagoons and sandy secluded coves just across the Yealm behind the rocks.
Crowds: depend when you go, if the sun is shining, sorry forget it but there probably wouldn't be any surf anyway. When it is windy and the surf is up, few crowds.
Eating: in the summer the is a cafe on the beach and also a smaller beach shop selling ice creams and hot or cold drinks. Pub up the road sells good, filling pub food at a reasonable price.
Shops: post office and Co-op both selling food.
Locals: friendliest people on earth. When we first moved to the village, the friendliness of total strangers was incredible.
Access: public transport not good but there is a bus service - check bus times as infrequent. National Trust Beach car park (£4.50), Church Car Park ((£2) or Cliff Road (free) with a short walk across the field past church to beach. Church Road (free) if you can get a space.
5 stars all round except perhaps surf at times - but this is the same everywhere. I kayak, not surf so there is plenty to do with or without the surf.
I hope this corrects some misconceptions about Wembury - and no! Is is not a village full of geriatrics. Even older people like me remain active. This is not mentioned in your reviews but is in others, especially Tweets.”
