The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking flat and frustrating for the most part. There’s no real juice on the table for a while, so if you’re itching for a wave, you’ll need to be patient. A few days with a bit more energy do show up, but the conditions will make you work for it.
It’s a quiet start. From Thursday the 16th right through to Saturday the 26th of July, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. It’s a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and often messy wind. The only spot in the game is Mother Ivey’s Spot M, and it’s a sheltered little nook that’s waiting on a proper W swell to wake up. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 64°, which is nice, but it won’t save the surf.
Then, on Sunday the 26th of July, we finally see some life. The combo energy ticks up to 132 (moderate) on the morning with a 4ft swell from the W and a period of 7 seconds. It’s not a groundswell, but the wind goes cross-offshore and the wave comment says “clean.” That’s our best shot in the whole run – a small but tidy window. The afternoon hangs in there too, with 3ft from the W and cleaner conditions, energy at 118. It’s not a classic, but after all that nothing, it’s the standout.
Monday the 27th keeps the hope alive with a proper offshore wind from the SW in the morning, swell a bit smaller at 3ft from the W, period up to 9 seconds. The energy drops to 94, but it’s still clean. That morning session has potential for some lined-up little peelers if you’re sharp.
The last few days of the month into the 30th and 31st see the swell push back up over 3ft and the energy hits 145 and 184 (moderate), but the wind turns messy – cross-on and lumpy. You’ll be battling chop for a wave that’s not really clean. Those days are more for the hardcore or the kite crew if you’re into that. Not a paddle surfer’s dream.
Bottom line: if you’re keen, circle Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th of July. Everything else is a write-off. Keep an eye on the forecasts, though – it’s been quiet, but it won’t stay this way forever.
Rusty.
