The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the outlook for Mother Ivey’s Spot M. It’s a sheltered little nook that wants a west swell to get going, but honestly, for the next 16 days, we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel. There’s no real window of good surf to recommend, so I’ll take you through what’s on offer and why it’s such a quiet stretch.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. Friday the 17th has tiny 1.0ft west swell, but the wind is all over the place – cross-off or cross-on, and the energy is weak (13 to 25). It’s just not happening. Saturday the 18th sees a bit more size, up to 4ft from the north, but that’s a short-period windswell of only 5 seconds, and the wind is a fresh 19 mph onshore, making it lumpy and awful. The energy is building (77), but it’s ugly.
Sunday the 19th is even worse – morning brings a tiny 0.7ft west swell with onshore wind, and the afternoon is a messy 3ft north windswell. Not a single wave worth paddling for. The whole first week is a series of poor surf conditions, with the wind constantly from the north or northwest, onshore or cross-shore, and the swell bouncing between 0.7ft and 4ft. The energy stays low, mostly under 100, except for a couple of afternoons where it climbs to 94 – still not enough to clean up.
We get a bit of a breather on Friday the 24th with a clean, cross-off breeze, but the swell is laughable at 2ft and then 0.3ft. Long period (13 seconds) on that tiny 0.3ft is just a ripple. For a sheltered spot like this, you need a decent west swell, and it’s just not there.
Now, the one time the swell shows some muscle is around Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. The swell jumps to 6ft from the west-northwest with a period of 6 to 7 seconds, and the energy is moderate (213 to 257). That’s a decent amount of water moving, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore, creating a lumpy cross-chop. For a spot that’s sheltered, this kind of wind is a killer. The waves will be there, but they’ll be bumpy and messy. This is the only time the swell is over 5ft, so it’s not beginner-friendly, but the quality is poor. Frankly, with that kind of wind and a beach setup, this might be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
After that pulse, it fades out quickly. From Monday the 27th through to the end of the month, the swell drops back to 2ft to 3ft, with the wind staying onshore or cross-shore. The energy falls back to weak (60-80). There’s one clean window on Wednesday afternoon the 29th with a cross-off breeze and a 2ft west swell at 10 seconds, giving a bit of shape (118 energy), but it’s still small and the wind is moderate. It’s the best of a bad lot, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
The final day, Saturday, August 1st, is a cloudy 2ft west swell with onshore wind. Another day to sleep in.
So, bottom line: there are no standout sessions here. The best on offer is the 25th and 26th if you’re desperate for size, but expect chop. Otherwise, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. The spot is fairly consistent in that it’s always breaking trash, so a blank run like this isn’t unusual for a sheltered spot that’s so picky about wind. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this bad forever.
Rusty.
