The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Mother Ivey’s Spot M has got cookin’ for us over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, this is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing. The first solid week is basically a write-off. From the 18th of July right through to the morning of the 29th, it’s a flat, wind-affected mess. There’s barely a ripple to get excited about; the swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross-on, and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” You’d be wasting your time paddling out. The water temperature is 64°, a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so at least the water feels nice, but that’s all you’ve got.
The first real sign of life comes on the morning of the 29th of July. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the WNW, and the wind turns clean and cross-off. The combined energy is a solid 303 (moderate), but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and weak. The notes call it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so it’s not a standout, just a glimmer of hope after a long dry spell.
Now, the real highlight of the whole outlook is the 31st of July. Friday. Both morning and afternoon are looking great. You’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds, and clean cross-off winds. The combined energy jumps to 671 (strong), which is proper juice. The wave comment upgrades to “expect good surf conditions”. This is the best on offer by a long shot, and it’s a clean, punchy west swell that’ll line up nicely. It’s a little on the bigger side, so maybe not for the groms, but for anyone with a bit of experience, this is the session to aim for.
The first of August holds some promise, with a 5ft W swell and fresh offshore winds on the Saturday afternoon, but the energy drops a bit and the forecast is a little more marginal. The second of August has clean offshore winds, but the swell is easing back.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a total washout. The morning of the 29th is your first chance to get wet, but the standout is Friday the 31st of July. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. There’s some okay surf into the first couple of days of August, but nothing beats that Friday.
Rusty.
