Alright, let's get into it. Gotta be honest with you, straight off the bat – looking at Mother Ivey's Spot M for the next couple of weeks, it's a tough watch. We've got a long, quiet stretch ahead with barely a ripple worth paddling for.
Right now, Saturday morning the 4th, we're looking at a weak 3ft swell from the west with a decent 10-second period, but the water's a touch warmer than normal at 63°. The problem is the wind is cross-off, and the surf report is calling it "poor." The combined energy is only 159 (weak), which tells you there's just no push behind it. It stays like this, small and messy, through the whole first week. Winds are mostly cross-off or cross, but the swell is tiny – nothing over 4ft – and the scores are all zeros and ones. Sunday the 5th afternoon shows a glimmer with 3ft from the WNW, but it's described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." Hardly worth the wetsuit.
We hit a real flat spell midweek. By Tuesday the 8th, we're down to 2ft, and the wind goes onshore, turning it choppy. That continues for days. Wednesday the 9th, Thursday the 10th, Friday the 11th – all poor, with the swell barely hanging on. The 11th is particularly nasty with a fresh 19 mph north wind making it lumpy. The wave energy drops to pathetic levels, like 32 (extremely weak) on Sunday the 12th. It's a proper write-off.
That glassy morning on Monday the 13th with 1ft might look tempting in the data, but with no swell to break, it's just a flat, pretty lake. Then we get another tease on Tuesday the 14th with 3ft and 10-second period swell pushing the energy to 142, but again, the report is "poor" with cross-onshore winds. It's a pattern.
Now, here's the one and only standout. You have to wait, but it might just be worth it. On Friday the 17th of July, in the afternoon, things finally click. The swell jumps to a solid 6ft from the west with a short, punchy 8-second period. The combined energy rockets up to 438 (moderate to strong), and the wind goes clean cross-off at 9 mph. The report actually says "expect good surf conditions." That's your window. It's not a groundswell with long lulls, it's a short-period wind swell, so it'll be a bit more consistent between sets. Get on it if you can.
After that, it drops back down. Saturday the 18th morning is still rideable at 4ft and clean, but it's nothing special. By Sunday the 19th, the onshore wind comes back and ruins it.
So, to sum it up: a long, flat gap until Friday the 17th afternoon. That's the day. The rest is for the dogs. Keep your eye on that forecast, because it could change, but right now, it's a long wait for one good session.
Rusty.
