The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Mother Ivey’s Spot M is doing for the next sixteen days. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – it’s a rough start. We’ve got a long, flat spell for nearly the first two weeks before we finally get a pulse of real swell.
From Tuesday the 14th all the way through Saturday the 25th of July, it’s pretty much a write-off. Swell heights are tiny, mostly under 3 feet, and the wind is all over the place. We do get a few calm, glassy moments – Tuesday afternoon the 14th and Friday morning the 17th – but with the swell barely reaching 0.7ft, you’re just staring at a flat ocean. The combined wave energy barely breaks into triple digits, mostly sitting in the teens and low fifties. The offshore southwest wind this sheltered spot likes never shows up. Don’t waste your time.
Things finally start to turn on Saturday the 25th of July. We get a 2ft WNW groundswell with a long 12-second period, and the wind sets up cross-offshore. The combined energy climbs to 116 – it’s moderate but real. The water temp is about average for the season. Sunday the 26th gets bigger but windier. By Sunday morning, a 5ft west swell shows up with a short 8-second period, but the cross-offshore wind is howling at 30 km/h, keeping it clean but feral. The energy is up to 372.
Now mark your calendar for Monday the 27th of July. That’s the one. Monday morning delivers a solid 7ft west swell with a gentle offshore breeze at 15 km/h from the WSW. The combined energy hits 520, strong stuff. The period is short at 8 seconds, so expect some lumpy, dumpy waves on the banks, but that offshore wind will keep the faces clean. This one is for intermediate surfers – 7ft is pushing it for beginners. Monday afternoon the wind picks up to 30 km/h, making it tougher.
Tuesday the 28th of July has 5ft and 4ft swells with clean offshore winds, but the wind is blowing 35-40 km/h. The energy is still strong at 422, but paddling out will be a mission. Wednesday the 29th of July sees the biggest raw swell at 7ft from the west, energy at 650, but again it’s a battle with strong winds. Only experts should be looking at that one.
So to sum it up: nearly two weeks of flatness, then one solid Monday. Forecasts can change, but for now, that’s your lot.
Rusty.
