Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, grab your wettie—it’s gonna be a quiet season opener here. Let’s get straight to it.
Mother Ivey’s Spot M (Lakes Entrance) is our only real option in the forecast window, but it’s a tricky one. The water is sitting at about average for the time of year, so nothing wild on the temp front. The early outlook? Honestly, a bit grim for the first week with tiny, weak swell and mostly cross or cross-onshore winds messing with the surface.
Sunday, July 5th, kicks off with a light 2ft W swell, period around 9 seconds, and the wind is cross-off in the morning at 6 mph. The wave energy is pretty weak at 117, so we're talking small, weak lines. The afternoon pushes up a little to 3ft with the same period but a stronger cross-off wind (9 mph). It’s surfable, but “very ordinary” is the name of the game.
Monday brings 3ft W swell with a cleaner cross-off at 6 mph in the morning, but it’s still low energy at 101. By Tuesday, the swell drops to 2ft with energy down to 62 – barely a ripple. Wednesday shows a bit of life with a light onshore wind (NE 3 mph) and 2ft W swell (88 energy), but it’s still poor. That pattern of small, low-energy, poorly-winded conditions hangs around through the first week. The only slight glimmer comes late Friday, July 10th, when the combined energy climbs to 153 with a 3ft WSW swell and a gentle cross-onshore breeze—still not clean, but the most energy we’ve seen.
The real standout doesn’t appear until Tuesday, July 14th. After a run of that uninspired fare, the afternoon brings a sweet surprise: a clean 3ft W swell (10 second period) with glassy conditions—light offshore at only 3 mph. Combined wave energy hits 176, which is the most robust reading of the whole run. This is the best surf on offer: small but clean, semi-consistent, and with the shelter of the spot keeping it workable. Crowds can show up here at times, and given how limited the options are, it wouldn’t shock me if a few locals are sniffing around that afternoon.
The rest of the second week slides back into tiny-weak territory: Thursday July 16th onward brings 2ft–1ft swell from the WNW with moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds, and energy numbers plummet to the 20s and 30s. That Saturday, July 18th, sees a 4ft N swell blast through—but it's short-period (6 seconds), on a messy cross-onshore at 19 mph, and the wave state is lumpy and ugly. That setup looks a lot more like a kite surfer’s day than a paddle surfer’s.
So, if you’ve got a window, pencil in Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, for the cleanest, most hopeful session of the bunch. Everything else is either too small, too sloppy, or both. This is a patch of coastline where blank runs happen, but with a bit of patience and the right tide, that Tuesday glass-off might just give you a smile.
