The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Mother Ivey's Spot M has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you—this one’s a tough stretch. The water is sitting at a touch warmer than normal, about 64°F, which is a little treat for this time of year, but the waves? They’re mostly a no-show for the first week.
Right now, we’re looking at a long dry spell. From Friday the 17th through to Sunday the 26th of July, it’s a whole lot of nothing. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the wind is almost always cross-onshore or just plain rubbish. The wave energy is weak, with values barely cracking 100 (13 to 97). You’ll see some glassy moments, like on the morning of Tuesday the 21st with a light easterly breeze, but with only 1 ft of weak, short-period swell from the WNW, it’s just not worth paddling out for. There’s a brief kick on Saturday the 18th with 3 ft to 4 ft of short-period northerly swell, but it’s getting hammered by a strong 16 mph north wind, making it choppy and lumpy. Honestly, that’s more of a kite-surfing setup than anything for a paddle board.
The real action, if you can call it that, doesn’t start until Monday the 27th of July. We finally see some size. The morning brings a 5 ft west swell with a 6-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the southwest. That’s the cleanest we’ve seen it, and the wave energy jumps to a moderate 190. It’s surfable, but still ordinary. The afternoon picks up to 6 ft with a cross-offshore wind, which cleans it up a bit, and the energy climbs to 312. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best of a bad bunch.
Then things get a bit wild. By Wednesday the 29th of July, we’ve got a 7 ft west swell, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. That afternoon, the swell jumps to a heavy 13 ft from the west with a 10-second period, and the energy is massive at 2754. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not clean, but for experts only, this is a serious, powerful groundswell. That size continues into Thursday the 30th with 13 ft from the WNW, but it’s cross-onshore and messy. The energy peaks at 3288, but the conditions are marginal. This is not for the faint of heart.
If you’re looking for the one true standout, it’s the Monday morning of the 27th of July. The 5 ft west swell, clean offshore wind, and moderate energy (190) make it the most user-friendly wave in the whole forecast. It’s the only time it’s both surfable and clean. Later in the week, the 29th and 30th offer big, powerful swell for the brave, but the wind is keeping it from being a total classic.
So, to sum it up: a lot of waiting, one decent session on the 27th, and then a big, gnarly pulse for the serious crew. Keep your eyes on the horizon.
Rusty.
