Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Bommie Peak over the next couple of weeks.
Overall, it’s a pretty consistent run of surf from this exposed reef break, with a good mix of clean conditions and solid groundswell for the most part. Water temp is sittin’ at a warm 86°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so nothin’ to worry about there.
The action kicks off Monday morning, July 6th, with a 4ft swell from the south, clean and cross-off with a light breeze. The combined energy is solid at 804 (moderate), and that long 13-second period gives it some proper grunt. This is very good surf for a reef, and it’s an advanced spot, so expect some real gems. Into the afternoon, the swell drops a touch to 3ft but the period jumps to 16 seconds, makin’ for some long, lined-up walls – still clean and very good. Crowds are possible here.
Tuesday, July 7th, gets messier. Morning sees 4ft south-southwest swell but with a nasty cross wind that’s gonna chop it up. Afternoon goes onshore and it’s poor – a write-off for paddle surfing.
Wednesday, July 8th, the swell builds to 5ft from the south-southwest (15 seconds) and the combined energy jumps into strong territory at 1212. But the wind is cross or cross-on, so it’s only marginal. Kite surfers might find it more interestin’ than we will.
Now, Thursday the 9th of July is a standout. Morning starts with 5ft south-southwest swell, clean cross-off breeze, and excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The energy is 1102 (strong). That holds into the afternoon with 6ft and the same clean setup. This is the pick of the first week – proper clean, solid groundswell on a reef. Get on it.
Friday the 10th cleans up again by the afternoon – 5ft from the southwest with a 15-second period and a gentle cross-off breeze. Excellent conditions marked. Saturday the 11th stays clean but the swell eases to 5ft then 4ft – still very good, just not as punchy.
Sunday the 12th sees a smaller swell (4ft, then 4ft) but with an offshore wind in the morning and light cross-off in the arvo. Good, clean surf but nothin’ to write home about.
Into the second week, Monday the 13th brings a tiny 2ft swell but with a very long 21-second period and clean conditions. That’s a classic long-period groundswell that’ll wrap nicely around the reef, but it’s small. Tuesday the 14th is the next real standout: 4ft south-southwest swell, offshore wind in the morning, cross-off in the arvo, and excellent conditions. Energy hits 1334 (strong). This is top-tier for experienced surfers – clean, long-period groundswell, and the reef will handle it beautifully.
Wednesday the 15th is another glassy dream in the afternoon – 4ft, 15-second swell, glassy wind, very good. Thursday and Friday stay clean with 4ft to 4ft swells. Then Saturday the 18th has a stronger 5ft morning swell and moderate offshore wind – clean, good energy. Sunday the 19th brings the biggest swell of the run: 6ft from the southwest with a 16-second period and moderate offshore wind. Excellent for experts. Energy is 1465 – very strong. Monday the 20th holds at 5ft with offshore winds again.
So, to sum it up: Thursday the 9th and Tuesday the 14th are your absolute standouts. Both have clean offshore/cross-off winds, solid groundswell of 5ft and 4ft respectively, and excellent conditions that’ll have this reef firing. The rest of the window has plenty of clean, rideable waves, but those two days are the ones to circle.
Signing off,
Rusty
