The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look at what we’ve got on the cards. It’s all about Bommie Peak (a serious reef set-up) for the foreseeable future, so let’s get into it.
We start the run on Monday the 17th of August with a moderate 4ft SSW groundswell, period at 14 seconds, and a light offshore breeze from the SE at 12 mph. The water temp is sitting at a balmy 85°, which is about 1° warmer than average for this time of year – feels normal, no drama. Combined swell energy is moderate at 714, and with that offshore wind, Monday morning is clean and very surfable. The afternoon sees the swell drop a little and the wind goes cross-off, so it’s still clean but a bit smaller.
Tuesday the 18th sees the swell building. Morning comes in at 7ft from the SSW with a very long 16-second period, and the energy jumps right up to 2297 – that’s strong. The wind is a moderate cross-off, so the surface stays clean. This is getting into expert territory now. Tuesday afternoon drops slightly to 6ft but the energy is even higher at 2456, and with a gentle breeze, it’s still clean and punchy.
Now, the standout window starts to shape up. Wednesday the 19th morning is the first real highlight: a solid 8ft SSW swell with an 18-second period, energy reading a massive 3864 (very strong). Wind is gentle and cross-off, keeping it clean. This is top-tier, heavy reef surf for experienced crew only. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a risk of thunderstorms and a cross-shore wind that will put a little chop on it, so get your sessions in early.
Thursday the 20th is another cracker. Morning has 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, energy at 3184, and a light cross-off breeze. It’s clean and powerful. Thursday afternoon holds similar size at 8ft with energy at 2906, still with light winds. If you’re advanced, this is your window.
Friday the 21st drops back a touch to 6ft SW swell, still a solid 15-second period, and clean cross-off winds. Energy is moderate at 2289. Not as punchy as midweek, but still very good.
Saturday the 22nd offers a solid 7ft SSW swell with 15-second period, energy at 2176, and clean winds all day. Another one for the experienced.
Sunday the 23rd backs off a little to 5-6ft SSW swell, but the wind stays clean and the energy is moderate. A good option for those who want a slightly easier paddle.
The following week sees a bit more variability, but there are still some promising windows. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th offer clean 4-5ft SSW swell with long periods, energy in the moderate to strong range. Thursday the 27th has a 5ft SW swell with 16-second period, and Friday the 28th offers clean 4ft SW swell with light winds – good for a relaxed session.
Keep an eye on Saturday the 29th. The morning is a bit average with light cross-on wind, but the afternoon turns glassy with a light north breeze and a 3ft SW swell with an 18-second period. Energy is moderate at 1033. That glassy window is a gem for anyone who can get out.
Then we get a late burst of energy. Sunday the 30th afternoon has a tiny 4ft swell but with a massive 23-second period, energy jumping to 2416 – that’s a lot of push for the size, but it’ll be very long period and might straighten out a bit on this reef. Still worth a look for the patient surfer.
The real long-range standout is Monday the 31st of August morning: a solid 7ft SW swell with a 19-second period, energy readings at a massive 3819, and a light offshore breeze. That is a serious, powerful groundswell aimed right at Bommie Peak, and it should be absolutely pumping. This is one for the experts, no question. Tuesday the 1st of September holds similar size at 7ft with 17-second period and clean winds.
So, the best of the best? Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th mornings are your top-tier, heavy, clean, powerful SSW groundswell days. Then the real wildcard is Monday the 31st of August morning – huge energy, long period, clean offshore breeze. That one has ‘session of the trip’ written all over it, but as always with the long range, keep checking back because things can shift.
Stay safe out there on the reef.
Rusty.
