The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s cookin’ at Hilisataro for the next couple of weeks.
First off, you’re gonna need some patience. The early stuff this Saturday and Sunday is pretty flat and messy—wind’s on it or cross-on, and it’s just not worth wetting a wetsuit for. The first real chance to get a decent wave comes Monday morning, 24 August.
Monday morning is looking clean. Glassy conditions, with a 6 ft swell from the SSW, period a solid 17 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The wave energy is strong at 1750, and the call is "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers". That’s a standout for the first week. Water temp is about 86°F, right around normal for this time of year. It’s a reef break, so that long-period energy will wrap in nicely. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so don’t expect solitude.
Tuesday afternoon (25 August) also gets a thumbs up, with clean conditions and a 6 ft SSW swell. The wind goes cross-offshore, which is a nice bonus. Wednesday morning (26 August) is glassy and 5 ft, but the energy drops to 726, so it’s a bit weaker. Still fun.
Now, the real highlight is sitting at the start of September. Monday 31 August through to Wednesday 2 September is looking absolutely pumping. You’ve got 5 ft to 8 ft swells, all from the SW, with periods between 16 and 18 seconds, and glassy winds across the board. The energy readings are massive—up to 3258 on Tuesday 1 September. That’s very strong. The conditions are rated "excellent for experienced surfers". This is the best of the whole run. If you’re an advanced surfer, this is your window. That 8 ft swell is too big for beginners.
After that, the swell fades through the end of the second week, with smaller 3 ft to 4 ft waves and glassy mornings, but nothing to write home about. The last few days are small—2 ft to 3 ft—and mostly average.
So, the call is clear: Monday 24 August morning is your first decent session, but if you can wait, the run from Monday 31 August to Wednesday 2 September is the true standout. That’s the one to mark on the calendar.
Stay wet, stay stoked.
Rusty.
