The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. Rusty here. We got a run of surf at Hilisataro, an advanced reef setup that breaks fairly consistent, but it ain't for the beginners. The water is 86°, which is about normal for this time of year.
The week kicks off on Wednesday the 19th with a solid pulse. Wednesday morning we're looking at a 8ft SW swell with a very long 18-second period, packing a huge amount of energy (3772). The wind is glassy out of the WNW, so conditions will be clean. This is proper groundswell with heaps of grunt. Wednesday afternoon stays good, picking up slightly to an 8ft SW swell (4421) with a light WSW cross-off breeze keeping the face smooth. This is for experienced surfers only—this size and power at a reef is no joke.
Thursday the 20th drops off a notch. The swell holds around 8ft, but the period drops to 16 seconds, and we get an ENE cross-shore in the morning swinging onshore from the SE in the afternoon. The wave quality takes a hit, so it's more of a look-and-see day for the crew who know the place.
Friday the 21st sees the swell easing to 7ft from the SSW, but Friday afternoon is a real gem. Glassy conditions with a SSE breeze, a 15-second period, and 2579 of energy. That's a window of clean, powerful waves for the dedicated few.
The weekend (Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd) is a mixed bag. Saturday morning has onshore wind and the swell dropping to 7ft, but the afternoon gets a light cross-on. Sunday the size is down to 6ft, with clean morning glass but cross-on wind later. Not the best, but there'll be waves for those who don't mind the wind.
Monday the 24th is a standout. The morning delivers a clean 6ft SSW swell with a 17-second period and glassy conditions out of the East. That's 1769 of energy and super clean lines. This is your call for the start of the week—early session.
The middle of the week, Tuesday 25th through to Wednesday 26th, the swell drops further into the 4ft to 6ft range with shorter periods. The quality is marginal, with onshore and cross-onshore winds, but Wednesday morning and afternoon both go glassy with a 4ft SW swell and 13-second period. A smaller, cleaner option for a more relaxed paddle.
Thursday the 27th starts with a tiny 3ft SW swell and dead calm, glassy conditions—899 energy and a 15-second period. That's a clean, fun-sized morning for the patient surfer. The afternoon picks up to 5ft but with a cross-shore wind.
Friday the 28th is another high point. Morning glass from the ESE, 5ft SW swell with a 16-second period, 1360 energy, and clean as a whistle. That's a solid session. The afternoon stays glassy with a 5ft SW swell.
The weekend of the 30th and 31st is small and inconsistent. Saturday 29th has a 4ft SW swell with glassy mornings but cross-onshore wind in the arvo. Sunday 30th drops to 2ft, not worth getting wet for. Monday 31st sees a new pulse of energy, with 7ft to 8ft SW swell and a 19-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it's messy despite the power (3924 to 4266 energy).
Into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st is a cracker. The morning is cross-onshore, but Tuesday afternoon goes glassy with a 7ft SW swell and 17-second period (2524 energy). That's excellent surf for the crew who know the reef. Wednesday the 2nd keeps the quality with a clean 5ft SW swell in the morning under glassy E winds. Thursday the 3rd is glassy all day, with a small 4ft SW swell in the morning and a 3ft SSW swell in the afternoon, both with long periods.
Overall, the two standouts are Wednesday morning 19th August for that big, powerful 8ft SW groundswell with glassy wind, and Monday morning 24th August for the clean 6ft SSW groundswell. These are the sessions to plan around. Hilisataro can get crowded sometimes, so get in early.
Rusty.
