Updates in  hr  min  s Forecast update imminent

Alright, let’s have a look at what’s cooking at Cobden Breakwater for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a solid pulse of swell arriving Monday morning, July 6th. It’s a big one, with 10ft of west swell pushing in, and the combined energy is a hefty 4084 – that’s serious power. The wind is a cross-off from the SE, which is clean, but the size is definitely in the “experts only” zone. The surf is clean, but the commentary warns of “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” so you’ll need to pick your moment. The water is sitting at 56.5°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.

Monday afternoon drops a touch to 8ft, still with that cross-off wind, but the energy is still massive at 2981. Still a big, powerful wave.

Tuesday, July 7th, sees the swell back off significantly. Morning is 5ft from the WSW, but the wind is straight cross from the SSE, which introduces a bit of chop. The energy drops to 943. By the afternoon, it’s down to 4ft, and the cross-chop turns it into a bit of a mess. Not worth a paddle.

Wednesday, July 8th, is small. 3ft in the morning, 4ft in the afternoon. The wind is a clean cross-off, but the wave energy is low (277 and 596). It’s clean, but there’s just not enough push.

Thursday, July 9th, we get a bit of a spike back. 5.5ft in the morning and 5ft in the afternoon, both from the WSW with a clean cross-off wind. Energy is back up to 1293. This is the start of a better run, but it’s still just “marginal” according to the notes.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The standouts come in the second week. Friday, July 10th, morning looks really clean with 3ft, a 16-second period from the WSW, and a gentle cross-off breeze. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” The afternoon is lighter with a SSW breeze, but the morning is the pick.

Saturday, July 11th, is a true gem. Morning has 2ft of 18-second WSW groundswell with a clean cross-off. But the afternoon, July 11th afternoon, is glassy. Glassy. The wind is a 3 mph NE breeze, making the surface like a mirror, with 3.5ft of 16-second swell. This is as clean as it gets. The energy is 721. This is one of the best windows in the whole outlook.

Sunday, July 12th, keeps the good run alive. Both morning and afternoon are clean, with 4ft of WSW swell, light winds, and clean conditions. The swells are a touch shorter at 15 seconds, but still quality.

Monday, July 13th, sees a small drop-off. 2.5ft in the morning with a light offshore from the ENE, but the energy is low (260). The afternoon is even smaller.

Tuesday, July 14th, gets interesting again. The morning brings a 5.5ft swell from the NNW, but the period is a short 8 seconds – that’s windswell, not a groundswell. The afternoon is bigger, 10ft, from the NNW again, but with a cross-shore wind and a short 9-second period. The energy is 1592, but the quality will be poor and lumpy. This is a messy one.

Wednesday, July 15th, is a write-off. Onshore winds from the WSW and NW, 7ft and 6ft of messy swell. Don’t bother.

Thursday, July 16th, has a funny split. The morning is a 7ft W swell with a 15 mph cross-off from the north, making it clean but big. The afternoon, however, goes glassy again. A 3 mph north wind, 6ft of W swell, and the “expect very good surf conditions” tag. The energy is 798. Another cracker.

Now, the real highlight for the experienced crew is the end of the run. Friday, July
