The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way at Cobden Breakwater over the next couple of weeks. This spot is a breakwater setup, so it's a bit of a different animal than your standard beach break, and it's gonna be a wild ride of a forecast.
The water is sitting at 55°F right now, which is bang on average for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary there.
We kick things off on Monday the 20th with some proper surf. The morning has a clean 5ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 14 seconds, giving the water some real grunt (754). That cross-off wind from the ESE is going to keep the faces tidy. Then Monday afternoon turns glassy as the wind swings to the north, with the swell dropping slightly to 4ft but still holding that nice 13-second period (627). This is a solid start to the week, pretty clean and workable.
Tuesday the 21st is a bit smaller but still very much worth a paddle. The morning is clean with a 3ft W swell (375), and Tuesday afternoon goes glassy, dropping to 3ft but still holding that 12-second period (305). It’s not pumping, but it will be fun and uncrowded.
Wednesday the 22nd is a tricky one. The morning has a 3ft swell but the period is a jumbled 6 seconds, so it’s gonna be a bit weak and messy (204). The afternoon is a much better story: glassy conditions with a 4ft W swell, and the period jumps back up to 10 seconds (390), so it’ll have a bit more shape.
Thursday the 23rd is a standout. The morning is clean with a 5ft W swell, period 13 seconds (683) and nice offshore winds from the NE. The afternoon holds up with a similar 5ft W swell (643). This is the best bet of the first week, no question.
Now, Friday the 24th is where it gets a bit gnarly. The morning swell jumps to 7ft from the NNW with a short, weak 8-second period (1024), and it’s cross-on, so it’ll be a bumpy mess. The afternoon is worse: a strong 5ft WSW swell at 15 seconds (1875), but cross-on howling at 16 mph from the WNW. Honestly, this looks more like a kite-surfing day than a surfing day.
Saturday the 25th, the swell goes into overdrive. Morning offers a massive 12ft W swell at 16 seconds (6510), but it’s simply too big for this break. Afternoon is even crazier at 16ft (5324). This is expert-only territory, and with the sheer size, it’s likely to be breaking too straight for a breakwater unless you know exactly what you’re doing.
Sunday the 26th is a total washout. We’re looking at 25-31 mph onshore winds with 15ft and 12ft waves. Don’t even think about it.
After that stormy spell, we get a nice reset. Monday the 27th is clean and excellent for experienced surfers with a 7ft W swell, 12-second period (1095), and cross-off ESE wind. The afternoon is a bit onshore, but the morning is a ripper.
Tuesday the 28th is a big day. The morning has a 10ft W swell, but the period is a short 8 seconds (1049), so it will be a bit fat and walled up. The afternoon goes glassy with a massive 12ft W swell at 11 seconds (2434), but it’s again too big for most.
Wednesday the 29th is the clear standout of the second week. The morning is glassy with a 8ft W swell at a very long 14 seconds (2747). The afternoon is clean with a 6ft WSW swell, also at 14 seconds (1929). This is a proper groundswell window, and the breakwater setup should handle that long period better than a beach. If you’re an experienced surfer, this is the one.
The rest of the run into early August is a mix of big, clean swells that are often too big for the break. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st have 16ft+ swells with favorable winds, but it’s just too much wave. The first few days of August are similar, with 12ft to 13ft waves, but the morning of Sunday the 2nd and Tuesday the 4th offer some clean, manageable 8ft and 10ft swells with good cross-off winds, ideal for experts.
The bottom line: Thursday the 23rd is your best bet in the first week for clean, solid fun. Wednesday the 29th is the long-range gem for the experienced crew. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big.
Stay safe out there.
