The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up at Cobden Breakwater, but you’ll need to be patient and pick your moments. The first few days of the forecast period are a write-off with onshore wind and messy conditions, but from Friday morning things start to clean up real nice. The standout window is Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th of July, with some absolutely glassy conditions and a proper long-period groundswell that’ll have the Breakwater working.
Friday morning the 17th kicks things off with a 7 ft swell from the west, period of 15 seconds – that’s a long-period groundswell, so expect plenty of energy and long lulls between sets. The wind is light from the southeast at 3 mph, glassy, and the water temp is 55°F, which is about average for this time of year. This is intermediate-level stuff, but for experienced surfers it’s gonna be clean and punchy. The combined energy is moderate-strong (2123). That afternoon stays glassy with calm wind, same 7 ft swell, so it’s a full day of cracking waves.
Saturday the 18th keeps the good run going. Morning and afternoon both glassy with 3 mph winds from the southwest, swell dropping a touch to 6 ft from the WSW, period even longer at 17 seconds in the afternoon – that’s very long-period groundswell, which will make for lined-up, powerful waves at this breakwater. Energy is moderate-strong (2212 in the arvo). The Breakwater is exposed to the swell and the optimum direction is WSW, which is exactly what we’re getting. Crowds are rare here, so you’ll likely have plenty of room.
Sunday the 19th stays solid in the morning with 6 ft swell from WSW, 16-second period, clean offshore wind from the ENE at 3 mph. That’s a fantastic setup for a point break or reef-like breakwater. Energy is still moderate-strong (1799). The afternoon drops to 4 ft but remains glassy, so you can still get a few fun ones.
After Sunday, the swell slowly fades through the week but conditions stay clean and glassy until Wednesday the 22nd. From the 22nd into the 23rd, there’s a bit of a lull in size but still glassy mornings with 3 ft to 4 ft swells – good for a grovel session if you’re keen. The next standout pops up on Saturday the 25th, but that’s a big one: 12 ft swell from the west, 16-second period, but with onshore winds at 18-25 mph. That’s only for experts and even then, the wind will mess it up. The energy is strong (5254), but I’d only recommend it for kitesurfers, not paddlers. Sunday the 26th is still messy.
Then things turn around again on Monday the 27th of July: morning glassy with 4 ft swell from WSW, 12-second period, clean cross-offshore wind from the east. Good for a fun session. The final standout is Wednesday the 29th of July: 8 ft swell from the NW, short period at 10 seconds, but with clean offshore wind from the east at 6 mph. That’s another one for experienced surfers – the energy is moderate-strong (1866). The afternoon drops to 7 ft from the NNW, still clean.
Overall, the best surfing is definitely Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th. After that, pick the glassy mornings for the smaller days, and keep an eye on the 29th for a bigger, clean session. Signing off, Rusty.
