Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s how things are shaping up for Cobden Breakwater over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start today, Sunday the 5th of July. The morning’s not worth bothering with—rain and a cross-on breeze making a mess of a 6-foot NW swell. It jumps up later in the afternoon though: the wind swings cross-off, and conditions clean right up with 6-foot, 10-second swell from the west. That’s the best session on offer for today, no doubt. Water temp is about 56°, bang on average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Monday the 6th ramps up in size quickly. Morning sees a solid 10-foot, 16-second groundswell out of the west—stack of energy in the water (3857). That’s expert territory, way too big for beginners. It stays big through the afternoon at 8 feet with the same long period. Wind is cross-off from the SE both sessions, keeping it clean, but tide might be a factor. This is a big-wave day for experienced crew only.
Tuesday the 7th settles back nicely. Morning bumps at 5 feet, then 4 feet in the afternoon, both from the WSW with 14-second period. Wind stays cross-off and light—clean lines, good shape. That’s a solid day for intermediates, with moderate energy (789 and 534). Consistent surf but nothing too crazy.
Wednesday the 8th drops off a bit—smaller at 3 feet to 4 feet, still clean. Thursday the 9th picks up again though: 5 feet in the morning and 5 feet in the afternoon, both WSW, 14-second period, and clean cross-off winds. The afternoon actually gets flagged as excellent for experienced surfers. Energy is moderate (1083 and 1135).
Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th hold around the 4 feet to 4 feet mark, WSW swell, long periods of 15–16 seconds. Winds are light cross-off or even glassy on Sunday afternoon the 12th—that Sunday arvo looks bloody nice: glassy, 4 feet, 15-second groundswell. That’s real clean, easy paddling, and wave shape should be proper at the breakwater. Crowds are rare here, which is a bonus.
After that, the second week sees a steady drop-off. Monday the 13th to Thursday the 16th rolls through 2 feet to 3 feet—small but clean, with some glassy afternoons. Not punchy enough to get super excited about, but still surfable.
Then Friday the 17th of July throws a curveball: a fresh 5-foot to 6-foot NW/NNW swell, short period of 10 seconds, offshore or cross-off winds in the morning. That’s a standout in the later part of the forecast—clean, punchy, with moderate energy (756). Not the biggest, but with the right wind and direction (close to the WSW optimum), it’s more promising than anything else in that last week.
Saturday the 18th falls apart with strong winds and rain, then Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th fade back to tiny or messy surf. All up, the best bet is Sunday afternoon the 12th for clean glass and friendly waves, and the surprise standout is Friday morning the 17th for a punchier late-season swell.
Rusty.
