The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Brims Ness.
First thing to say: the next week is a write-off. There’s lumpy, messy cross-shore and onshore winds with swell around 3ft to 7ft, and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” The combined swell energy is moderate, between 132 and 371, but it’s all chopped up. You’d be better off cleaning the wax off your board than paddling out there. The water temp is 56°F, which is about normal for this time of year.
Things start to get interesting around Friday the 24th of July. We’ve got a jump in size – 10ft from the WNW with a 9 to 10 second period, and cross-offshore winds. The energy jumps right up to 1345 (strong), and the wave comment says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” That’s a big, raw, powerful swell, but it’s for experts only. Anything over 8ft is only for the skilled crew.
The real standout, though, is Monday the 27th of July. That morning, we’ve got 7ft from the NW with a 10-second period, light cross-offshore winds, and the wave comment is “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” The combined energy is 1007 (strong). The afternoon builds even better: 8ft from the WNW, a 12-second period, and light cross-offshore winds. That’s a clean, powerful groundswell with energy up at 1705. The period over 11 seconds means it’ll have proper shape and punch, but at a reef like Brims Ness, that’s a good thing. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but crowds are possible, and with waves this good, you’ll want to be there early.
Tuesday the 28th of July is also a beauty. The morning has 6ft from the WNW with an 11-second period and glassy conditions – the wind is literally calm. The combined energy is 757 (strong), and the wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s a clean, smooth, inviting morning for anyone who can handle the size.
After that, Wednesday the 29th of July still has clean 4ft surf in the morning, but it drops off quickly that afternoon as the wind turns onshore. From Thursday the 30th right through to the end of the forecast, it’s back to poor conditions with small, choppy waves.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a full skip. The best of the whole run is Monday the 27th of July – that’s the one to circle. Tuesday the 28th is a close second, with that glassy morning. Get on it.
Rusty.
