The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Brims Ness over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it’s a tough stretch. The first real surf worth mentioning comes in on Tuesday 14 July, but it’s a marginal call. We’ve got a small 3 ft WNW swell out of the northwest, with a period of 10 seconds and a combined energy of 229 (moderate). The water’s at 55°, which is bang on average for this time of year – nothing weird there. The wind is ESE, a cross-off at 9 mph, so the surface will be clean. But the score is low – it’s just a bit ordinary. The afternoon picks up a little to 3 ft from the west, 11-second period, same cross-off breeze but a bit stronger at 12 mph. Still, the wave comment says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” so it’s not a standout.

Wednesday 15 July is even smaller – 2 ft on the morning, 2 ft in the afternoon – and the wind is cross-off but the energy drops to 70 and 39 respectively. That’s weak. Thursday 16 July is a write-off with 1 ft and 1.0 ft. The whole stretch from now until Saturday 26 July is a long, dry gap of poor conditions. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, the swell is small, and the energy numbers are all low. The only blip of size is Sunday 19 July afternoon with 5 ft from the WNW but a period of just 5 seconds – that’s short-period wind slop, and the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-shore. That’s not surfable; it’s messy.

Now, here’s the one true standout in the whole forecast. On Thursday 23 July afternoon, we finally get a proper pulse. The swell is 3 ft from the west, but the period is a very long 14 seconds – that’s groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 421 (strong). The wind is a gentle 9 mph cross-on from the NW, so it’s a bit lumpy, but with that long period, Brims Ness being a reef, it’s going to line up nicely. That’s the best window of the whole outlook. But keep in mind, it’s more than a week away, so it’s promising but not locked in – and that long period at a reef can mean longer waits between sets. Still, for experts, this is your moment.

The morning of Friday 24 July also holds decent energy at 411 with 4 ft and 12-second period, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-on, so it’ll be choppy. The afternoon is similar with a cross-shore. By Saturday 25 July, the energy drops to 260 and the swell is 4 ft, still with a 10-second period, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore. It’s lumpy.

Then on Sunday 26 July morning, we get a surprise – glassy conditions with ESE wind at 3 mph, and a 3 ft west swell, 9-second period, energy at 103 (moderate). The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but with glass like that, it’ll be clean if small. That’s a nice little session for a longboard or a funboard.

The rest of the forecast into the end of July is pretty ordinary – small waves, onshore or cross-onshore winds, and low energy. Honestly, if you’re looking for a paddle, Thursday 23 July afternoon is the only real standout. For experts, that’s your window. The rest of the time, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with all that cross-onshore wind and lumpy conditions.

That’s the long and short of it. Keep your eyes on that 23rd.

Rusty.
