Table - best surf conditions forecast for Gas Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at Gas Bay, and I’ll tell you exactly what’s on the cards.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a solid run of swell coming in, but don’t get too excited just yet. The first few days are a bit of a mixed bag with the wind. We’re looking at a Saturday, 11th July, to start things off with a 10ft to 12ft SW groundswell running at a deep 13 seconds. That’s a proper long-period swell, which for a reef setup like Gas Bay is a beautiful thing – it’ll draw up nice and clean. But the Saturday morning wind is a cross-shore, so it’s a bit scratchy. The combined energy is already pumping at 2820 (moderate-high), so the power is there. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird there.
The real standout here, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Tuesday the 14th of July. The morning sees a clean cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, with an 12ft SW swell (15-second period) and a combined energy of 4828. That’s a lot of water moving. The afternoon goes glassy, NW wind, 10ft swell, still a solid 14-second period. This is the kind of day Gas Bay was built for – big, powerful, long-period groundswell, clean conditions, and a reef underneath. The scores tell me this is a top-tier call. It’s advanced-only though; at 10ft to 12ft, this is not for beginners. Crowds can be a factor here, so bring your patience.
We then hit a rough patch mid-week. Wednesday and Thursday are a write-off with strong winds and lumpy, messy conditions. That big swell on the 18th of July? 18ft to 20ft with a 17-second period and a combined energy over 18,000 – that’s massive, borderline dangerous. The wind is a near gale, so even if you’re an expert, it’s a blown-out beast. I’d be looking at this for the spectacle, not the paddle.
After that, the swell drops but the wind stays messy through the weekend and into the 20th. The 21st of July has a clean-ish morning with a 6ft SW groundswell (15 seconds), but the wind is light and cross. It’s a shadow of the Tuesday session.
The tail end of the forecast, from the 23rd of July onward, shows a more consistent pattern. Clean cross-offshore winds from the SE and a steady 7ft to 12ft SW groundswell. The periods drop back to 12-15 seconds, so it’s still good, quality groundswell. The energy is moderate (around 1500 to 5000). It’s not the epic Tuesday, but it’s consistent, clean, and surfable. This is worth a look if you’re planning for the second week, but it’s less certain that far out.
So, the short version: Tuesday 14th July is your day. Everything else is either windy, too big, or just average. Get out there for that Tuesday session if you’ve got the skills.
Rusty.
