The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way for Huzzawouie (Huzzas), but the wind is going to be the main character in this story for a while. The water is sitting at 66°, which is about a degree and a half warmer than average for this time of year, so not a shocker but still a touch balmy.
The first few days are a mixed bag. Tuesday afternoon the 14th sees a 10ft SW swell rolling in with a 14-second period, carrying a good amount of energy (3326). The wind is a cross-shore from the NE, so it’s a bit bumpy – the call is marginal. It’s surfable, but not the cleanest. Wednesday the 15th is a write-off with strong onshore winds making a mess of the 7ft to 8ft swell. Thursday the 16th is where it starts to turn. The morning is still a bit rough, but Thursday afternoon the wind shifts to a light cross-offshore from the SSW, cleaning up that 10ft WSW swell (3091 energy). That’s the first real standout. It’s big enough for experienced surfers only, but the conditions will be excellent for those who can handle it.
Friday the 17th through to the start of the following week gets ugly again with strong winds and lumpy conditions, even as the swell size fluctuates. Saturday the 18th sees a massive 18ft to 16ft swell (over 10,000 energy!) but it’s accompanied by a fresh cross-onshore gale, so it’s a total mess. Not worth the paddle-out.
Hold on for Wednesday the 22nd. That morning, the wind drops to a light offshore from the SSE, and we’ve got a clean 10ft SW swell (3511 energy). The afternoon goes glassy with a NNE breeze. This is the pinnacle of the forecast. Solid, powerful groundswell, clean conditions, and it’s a reef break. The only downside is that it’s a bit of a crowd magnet – it’s listed as “often” busy, so expect company. The water is still warm, and the wave quality for experienced surfers will be top-notch.
After that, the swell backs off but stays present. The 27th of July looks promising with a smaller, very long-period groundswell (18 seconds) and clean offshore winds, but the energy is lower (964). It’ll be a fun, mellow day for a longer board.
The very end of the window, the 29th of July, throws up a big 13ft W swell (8415 energy). The wind is light, but the swell period is a bit shorter at 12 seconds. It’s a marginal call, but if the tide is right, it could be a serious session for the experienced crew.
Overall, the best bet is undeniably Thursday afternoon the 16th for the first clean window, and then the absolute standout is Wednesday the 22nd. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. The rest of the time you’ll be fighting the wind, but when it’s on, it’s on.
Rusty.
