The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the cards for the stretch ahead.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start, but once things kick off, it’s all about Huzzawouie (Huzzas). This is a reef setup, good for beginners, and it’s been fairly consistent. The water’s sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first surf worth mentioning is on Thursday morning, August 20. It’s pretty solid with a 12 ft swell out of the WSW, and a long 16-second period, giving it a heap of energy (6515). The wind is cross-shore though, so expect a bit of chop. By Thursday afternoon, the wind shifts to cross-off and the surf cleans right up – still 12 ft from the WSW, but now it’s looking exceptional for the experts.
Friday August 21 is where it’s at. The morning is absolutely glassy, with zero wind and a 12 ft SW swell at 14 seconds. That’s clean, powerful, and a proper standout. The energy is still strong (4862). If you’re experienced, this is your window. Friday afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze and a 12 ft SW swell.
Saturday August 22 keeps the clean conditions rolling, but the swell drops a touch. Morning has 10 ft SW at 16 seconds, with a light cross-off wind. Afternoon sees 8 ft SW, still clean, but the wind picks up a bit. Sunday August 23 winds increase, and the surf gets a bit more marginal, though still rideable.
There’s a real lull from Monday August 24 through Tuesday August 25 – the wind goes onshore, and the quality drops off. Not worth paddling out.
Then things rev up again on Wednesday August 26. We’ve got a 15 ft WSW swell, huge energy (10474), but it’s messy with cross-shore wind and rain. The afternoon? That’s a different story. The wind turns cross-off, and you’ve got 15 ft at 17 seconds – that’s massive, clean, and for experts only. It scores an 8, a real standout.
But hold on, because Thursday August 27 brings strong winds (45 km/h) and the surf gets blown out fast. The rest of the month and into September is a mix of big swells, strong winds, and rain. The August 30 has a clean window with 10 ft WSW at 17 seconds, but that’s about it. By September, it’s mostly onshore, messy, and not worth it.
So, bottom line: Friday August 21 morning is the best of the best – glassy, solid, and clean. Wednesday August 26 afternoon is the big wave option for the experts. After that, keep an eye on the 30th for a possible clean session.
Rusty.
