The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the first few days of this outlook are a write-off. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are a total mess: strong onshore winds, lumpy, choppy, and just plain ugly. You’d be better off staying home. The water’s sitting at 67° at Huzzawouie (Huzzas), which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’s not freezing. But the surf itself? No good.

Things start to show a pulse on Sunday the 19th. The morning’s still a bit average with a cross-shore breeze and some rain, but by the afternoon the wind swings cross-offshore and the swell cleans right up. We’re looking at 10ft of WSW groundswell, with a solid 13-second period and moderate wave energy (2763). That’s the first real taste of something good – clean conditions for experienced surfers. The swell is a bit meaty, so this isn’t a beginner’s day.

Monday the 20th is a mixed bag with onshore winds and a bit of rain, but then Tuesday the 21st brings a clear sky and clean, cross-offshore winds. Again, 8ft of SW swell, 14-second period, and moderate energy (2822). Excellent for experienced surfers. The real standout, though, is Wednesday morning the 22nd. Glassy conditions, 5 km/h offshore wind, 10ft of SW swell at 13 seconds, and strong wave energy (3357). That’s a session you’ll remember. The reef will be handling that long-period groundswell beautifully.

After that, the consistency drops. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are onto a cross-onshore breeze and smaller, less clean swell. Not worth rushing out for. Then the weekend of the 25th and 26th delivers again: Saturday the 25th has clean cross-offshore winds and 7ft of WSW swell, and Sunday the 26th is glassy in the morning with a tiny but very long 4ft, 18-second SW groundswell – that’s a sneaky clean day for a log or a mid-length. The energy is still moderate (1507), so don’t expect a beast.

The second week gets interesting. Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th are average, but Wednesday the 29th brings a big pulse: 10ft of WSW swell at 19 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, and the energy is strong (9684). The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not perfect, but the size and period are impressive. For the reef, that’s a serious day. Then Thursday the 30th cleans up with cross-offshore winds and 8ft of swell, and Friday the 31st is glassy again – 7ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon, both with strong energy and long periods. That’s a quality run of surf.

The best of the whole outlook? Lock in Wednesday the 22nd for the glassy, 10ft SW swell at the reef, and maybe the 31st of July for that glassy, long-period finish. The 1st of August sees a massive 13ft WSW groundswell come in, but it’s a bit cross-on and lumpy – that’s expert territory only, and it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.

So, there’s a few gaps of flat or poor days, but the good windows are clean, punchy, and worth the wait. Stay keen.

Rusty.
