The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Huzzawouie (Huzzas). This is a reef break, exposed to the west-southwest, and it’s fairly consistent. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – about 67°F with a 3°F anomaly, so you’ll feel that little extra warmth. But the first few days? Honestly, not much to write home about.
Saturday July 18th and Sunday July 19th are a write-off – strong cross-onshore winds, messy, lumpy, poor surf. The swell is there but it’s just not working. Sunday afternoon clears up a bit – 10ft SW with a 13-second period and gentle cross-off wind, giving clean waves. That’s a decent start for experienced surfers, but it’s still not the highlight.
Monday July 20th is back to choppy, cross-onshore junk. Tuesday July 21st offers cleaner conditions with 8ft SW, 14-second swell, but the tide’s playing games – marginal. Wednesday July 22nd is where it starts to get interesting: 10ft SW, 13–14 seconds, and by Wednesday afternoon it goes glassy – zero wind, clean, excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The combined wave energy is strong, around 3728 to 3949 units. That’s a solid day.
Thursday July 23rd and Friday July 24th drop off – wind gets messy again. Saturday July 25th shows a little pulse: 5ft to 6ft WSW, offshore and cross-off winds, clean. Good for beginners if they’re careful, but the swell’s small.
Now, the real standout: Sunday July 26th. This is the one. 11–12ft SW, 17-second period in the morning, 16-second in the afternoon – that’s a very long-period groundswell, perfect for a reef like Huzzas. The wind is light offshore from the SE, glassy and clean. The combined energy is massive – 6866 in the morning, 7009 in the afternoon. This is exceptional, expert-only surf. Sets will be big, powerful, and well-shaped. The crowd factor is “often” so expect a few locals out, but it’ll be worth it.
Monday July 27th through Tuesday July 28th drop off again – still some clean windows but the swell is smaller and the wind picks up. Wednesday July 29th is a mess – strong cross-shore, onshore, huge swell but poor quality. Thursday July 30th brings another solid pulse: 13ft SW, 16-second period, cross-off wind, clean but marginal due to tide. Still, for experts who know the reef, that’s a serious session. Friday July 31st and Saturday August 1st settle into smaller, cleaner conditions – 8ft to 6ft, offshore or cross-off winds, good for experienced surfers but not the same power.
Bottom line: if you’re after the best of the 16-day window, it’s Sunday July 26th. That’s the one to circle. Wednesday July 22nd is a close second for a midweek glassy session. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too messy. Stay safe out there.
