Righto, let’s get into it. The only game in town for the next couple weeks is Huzzawouie (Huzzas) , and it’s a bit of a wild ride. Water temp is sitting around 67°F, which is pretty average for this time of year.

At first, Saturday the 11th kicks off with solid 8ft to 10ft of SW groundswell, with a period of 13 seconds. The combined energy is substantial (2492 to 3208). Winds are S at 9 mph, blowing cross-off, keeping things clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers, but at that size, beginners should sit this one out.

Sunday the 12th sees the swell building to 10ft to 12ft out of the SW, with the period stretching to 14 and then 17 seconds in the afternoon. That long period really juices up the energy (4912 to 8192). The wind stays cross-off from the SSW at 9 mph, so the waves should hold good shape. This is the standout window: Sunday afternoon looks absolutely pumping for competent surfers.

Monday the 13th holds 12ft SW swell with a 16-second period, energy is still huge (6049). A light 6 mph SW breeze keeps things cross-off in the morning, making for excellent, clean waves for experts. By the afternoon, wind swings to a light cross-shore, and quality drops a notch.

Tuesday the 14th offers a nice shift: morning sees 10ft SW swell with cross-shore NE winds at 6 mph, but the real gem is the afternoon. Glassy conditions, flat calm, with 10ft SW groundswell (period 14 seconds) rolling in. That’s a rare treat – smooth, powerful lines, but still only for those with experience given the size.

Then things get rough. From Wednesday the 15th through to the 18th, the wind cranks up – 19 to 28 mph onshore or cross-onshore, turning the ocean into a mess. On Saturday the 18th, the swell jumps to a massive 16ft to 18ft, with energy readings over 15,000. That is simply too big for this break, even for experts. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during that blast.

We get a brief window of cleaner but smaller swell on the 19th and 20th – 12ft down to 6ft SW swell, but with cross-onshore winds and moderate chop, making it marginal at best.

Another ugly spell hits from 21st to 25th July: howling onshore or strong cross-shore winds and messy sea state. The swell is there, but it’s almost unrideable. The energy readings are high (often over 4000) but with those winds, it’s a write-off for a surfer.

The very end of the run, Sunday the 26th, brings a 5ft to 8ft SW groundswell with a very long 15 to 16-second period. Winds are onshore from the W at 16-19 mph, so it’s a choppy closeout. The energy is there (2822 to 4612), but the wind ruins it.

The best on offer: Without a doubt, Sunday the 12th afternoon at Huzzawouie. That 12ft SW, 17-second groundswell with clean cross-off winds is a serious memory-maker. Tuesday the 14th afternoon is the other standout – glassy conditions and 10ft clean groundswell is a rare combination.

Crowds at Huzzawouie can be an issue, but on those standout days, it’ll be worth the paddle battle.

Rusty.
