The Lowdown
Alright, surf’s up... or it’s gonna be. Let’s break down this next stretch.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a serious pulse of west-southwest groundswell hitting Huzzawouie (Huzzas). This is a solid, powerful swell with a long period, and the water’s running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is always a bonus. It’s a reef break that’s fairly consistent, so it’s got a good rhythm to it.
Tuesday morning kicks things off with some serious size – we’re talking 15ft waves and the swell energy is strong, sitting at 10173. The wind is cross-on from the WNW at 9 mph, which will put a bit of chop on the face. It’s not going to be perfect, but there’s a lot of water moving. This is big, powerful surf, and for a beginner, it’s way too much. Even for the experienced crew, this is a handful. The period is 16 seconds, which is a proper groundswell, but that size and the onshore wind will make it a battle. We’re looking at marginal conditions.
Wednesday looks like the better call. The swell holds at 15ft, but the wind swings around to a cross-shore from the SW at 12 mph, cleaning it up a bit. Both the morning and afternoon sessions are on the cards, with the afternoon seeing the swell period bump back up to 16 seconds. This is still heavy-duty, expert-level surf. The energy is still strong, with readings around 8590 and 9739.
Thursday the swell starts to ease slightly, dropping to 13ft in the morning. The wind is still cross-shore, but the afternoon looks cleaner with the wind dropping to a light breeze. You’re still looking at a powerful, 16-second swell, but it’s becoming more manageable. The energy is dropping into the moderate-to-strong range.
Friday is the standout of this first pulse. The swell is down to a still-sizeable 12ft, but the wind goes glassy in the morning. That’s the key. Absolutely no wind, clean faces, and a solid 15-second groundswell rolling in from the WSW. This is the pick of the first few days for sure. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze, but that morning glass is the one. The energy is still solid at 5166.
Saturday, the swell backs off a touch more to 10ft, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the SSW. It’s still excellent surf for experienced surfers, but the energy is starting to wind down, hitting 3953. The condition is clean, but the size is dropping.
Sunday through early next week, the swell fades into the 8ft to 10ft range. The winds are mostly manageable, but the standout energy from the start of the period is gone. There’s still rideable surf, but you’ll need to pick your sessions.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. There’s a stretch from around the 24th to the 28th where things get tricky. Blown-out conditions, onshore winds, and the swell gets messy. The 25th is a write-off with a near gale blowing. Don’t even bother. Too much wind and rain for any kind of quality. It’s poor, plain and simple.
The surf starts to rebuild towards the end of the month. The 29th is looking promising again. We get a new pulse of WSW swell at 8ft, with a long 16-second period. The wind is a light cross-off, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the second standout of the window, but being so far out, treat it as promising but not guaranteed. The energy is back up to 3632, which is a solid sign.
After that, we head into September with more swell on the way, but the winds look more northerly and onshore, which isn't ideal for this break. As we get into the second week, the outlook gets simpler: there’s surf, but the wind is the deciding factor. It’s going to be a game of picking the shoulder of the swells.
So, to keep it simple: that Friday morning glass with 12ft of clean WSW groundswell is your first and best bet. Then keep an eye on that Saturday the 29th, which looks like another good window for some proper waves. Big, powerful, and you need to know what you’re doing out there. It’s a reef break with a lot of energy behind it.
Rusty.
