The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Huzzawouie (Huzzas) over the next couple of weeks. This is a reef setup, so we’re looking at a wave that needs the right direction and size to really fire.

The window kicks off with a bang on Friday, August 21st. That’s the standout in this whole run. We’ve got a solid 12ft SW groundswell, with a very long period of 14 seconds, pushing through. The combined energy is massive – 4862 – and it’s glassy in the morning. There’s a weird, calm feeling in the air, and the water is already a touch warmer than normal at 66°. For the experienced crew, this is the one. The morning session is the pick, with the wind coming from the NNE at 0 mph – dead glass. The afternoon holds up too, with a clean cross-off breeze and the swell holding strong, but the morning is the dream.

Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd see the swell ease down a bit, but it’s still in the 8ft to 10ft range. The wind stays cross-off, but it’s blowing a bit harder, 12-15 mph. The conditions are clean, but the energy is dropping, and the forecasts are calling it marginal. It’s still surfable for the experienced ones, but it’s nowhere near that Friday magic.

Monday the 24th is a write-off. The wind swings onshore in the afternoon, and the quality drops. From Tuesday the 25th, things get ugly. We’ve got a massive spike coming on Wednesday the 26th with a 16ft WSW swell and a 17-second period, and the energy reading goes through the roof at 15162. But the wind is a messy cross-off for the morning, and it’s just too big for this break. The reef is going to be a washing machine. After that, through the rest of the week and into the next, it’s a mix of strong onshore winds, rain, and lumpy, cross-chop conditions. The swell hangs around, but the wind just shreds it. There’s a brief window on Friday the 28th with a clean offshore breeze and a 8ft SW swell, but it’s a shadow of that first morning.

The second week is grim. From August 30th right through to September 5th, it’s mostly poor, with strong winds, rain, and messy seas. The swell is often too big for the break and the wind is all wrong. There’s a moment on September 5th with a 20ft WSW swell and a lumpy cross-shore wind, but that’s for the crazies, not a fun session.

So, the takeaway? If you’re an expert, be at Huzzawouie at dawn on Friday, August 21st. That’s the only truly exceptional session in the forecast. The rest is a battle with the wind or a battle with the swell size. There’s a good 10-day gap from the 21st to the 28th that has some surfable moments, but nothing that touches that first day. After that, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions.

Stay salty,
Rusty.
