The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the cards for Huzzawouie (Huzzas).

We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up, but you’re going to have to pick your windows carefully because the wind is going to be a bit of a handful at times. The swell is solid and consistent, pumping in from the WSW, but the early part of the week is a bit messy.

Tuesday the 18th kicks things off with a powerful 15 ft swell, but a strong cross-on breeze has it looking choppy and unappealing. That’s a pass from me.

The first real standout is Wednesday afternoon the 19th. We’ve still got a meaty 15 ft swell from the WSW, but the wind drops right back to a gentle cross-shore breeze, cleaning things up nicely. The wave energy is massive, so it’s powerful, but the conditions will be much better than the morning. This is the one to circle.

Thursday the 20th sees the swell dip a touch to 13 ft, but the wind stays light and cross-shore. It’s a solid option with moderate energy and should offer some fun ones without the crazy size of the day before.

Friday morning the 21st is special. The swell is still a very respectable 12 ft from the SW, but the wind goes completely glassy. Zero wind. The water is a touch warmer than average for the time of year at 67°, and the energy is still pumping. This is a top-tier window for experienced surfers. Saturday morning the 22nd repeats the trick with another glassy morning and 10 ft of SW swell.

Sunday the 23rd gets blown out by a moderate cross-shore breeze, and the swell starts to drop. The energy is fading. It gets a bit lumpy.

Monday the 24th is a write-off with onshore winds and poor conditions. Then Tuesday the 25th morning brings a messy 35 km/h cross-wind and a short-period 12 ft swell that’s just lumpy. Avoid that. However, Tuesday afternoon is a big bounce-back: the swell jumps to a clean 16 ft from the SW with a cross-offshore breeze and energy surging. That’s expert territory, but clean and powerful.

The rest of the week into the 27th and 28th offers cleaner, smaller waves in the 6 ft to 7 ft range with light cross-offshore winds. Thursday afternoon the 27th is a glassy, clean option for a more relaxed session.

Now, looking into the second week, it’s promising but less certain. Saturday the 29th afternoon goes glassy again with an 8 ft SW swell. Nice.

Sunday the 30th afternoon is a big one to watch: a clean 13 ft swell from the WSW with a gentle cross-offshore breeze and strong energy. That’s a powerful, clean setup for experienced surfers.

Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September bring another pulse of big swell, around 16 ft to 18 ft, but the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s going to be messy and heavy. Only for the brave and experienced.

The pick of the whole period? Wednesday afternoon the 19th and Friday morning the 21st. For the second week, keep an eye on Sunday afternoon the 30th. Huzzawouie is a reef break, so those long-period WSW swells will hold up nicely. Just be aware, crowds are likely here, so get in early for the best of it.

Rusty.
