The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

We’ve got one main spot in the mix: Huzzawouie (Huzzas). It’s a reef break, beginner-friendly, and fairly consistent. The water temp is sitting at 66°F – a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable without a thick suit.

The first real action kicks off Wednesday, August 19. Swell is pushing 15ft from the WSW, with a long 15-second period. That’s a big, powerful groundswell. The combined energy is strong – 8648 – and it’s got some serious grunt. The wind is cross from the SW at 12 mph, which is going to put a bit of chop on the face. It’s surfable, especially for those who know the reef, but it’s not perfect. The afternoon stays similar, with a 16-second period and similar energy.

Thursday 20 August is where it starts to clean up. The swell drops to 12ft but still holds a solid 16-second period. The morning is cross, but the afternoon turns cross-off with a light breeze. That’s a clean window. The energy is still moderate (6494), and the wave comment says “exceptional for expert surfers.” That 12ft is pushy, but if you’re comfortable on a bigger reef wave, this is one of the best windows.

Friday 21 August is the standout. Swell is still 12ft from the WSW, 15-second period, but the wind goes glassy in the morning. Absolute glass. That’s rare. The wave comment says “exceptional” and the energy is 5166. It’s going to be clean, lined up, and powerful. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-off breeze. This is the session to circle.

Saturday 22 August sees the swell back off to 10ft and then 8ft, with a moderate cross-off wind. It’s still clean, but the energy drops to 3953 then 3137. Worth a paddle, but not the peak.

Sunday 23 August has a bump in swell back to 12ft in the afternoon, but the wind picks up to 16 mph. Still cross-off, so it’s clean, but it’s a stronger breeze. Energy is moderate at 5471.

Monday 24 August is a write-off. Onshore wind, messy, energy drops to 1977. Poor conditions.

Tuesday 25 August is flat. Onshore wind, energy down to 1030. Don’t bother.

Wednesday 26 August throws a big spike: 16ft from the WSW, 16-second period, with combined energy of 12633. That’s very strong. But the wind is cross-shore and messy, with a cross-chop. It’s big, powerful, and ugly. Only for the very experienced, and even then, it’s not going to be pretty.

From Thursday 27 August through to the end of the month, the swell holds between 8ft and 12ft, mostly with cross-off or offshore winds. The best of that second week is Friday 28 August: morning offshore wind from the ESE at 12 mph, 8ft swell, 12-second period. That’s clean and lined up. Energy is 2697. It’s a good session for experienced surfers.

Then there’s a standout on Tuesday 1 September. Swell is 12ft from the WSW, 15-second period, with a clean cross-off breeze in the morning. Energy is 5170. Wave comment says “exceptional for expert surfers.” That’s another top pick.

Overall, the best bet is the Friday 21 August glassy morning session. That’s the one. The next best is the Thursday 20 August afternoon and the Tuesday 1 September morning. There’s a big gap of poor surf from 24 to 25 August, and a messy big swell day on 26 August. But for the rest, there’s plenty of clean, powerful reef waves if you’re up for it.
