The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again, this time in feet and miles per hour for the same stretch at Isolators.

The water temp is about 65°F, which is pretty standard for mid-September around here.

Monday the 14th starts us off with 8ft of WSW swell – a lot of energy (2717). But the wind is cross-off in the morning, then goes cross in the afternoon, and the surf is just so-so. Tuesday the 15th is similar: 8ft (2152), still cross or cross-off breezes.

Wednesday the 16th is the first decent one. A 5ft WSW swell in the morning with a clean offshore breeze at 12 mph. Then by the afternoon, the wind drops to nothing – glassy – and the swell is 3ft (566). Clean and small, good for a longboard.

From Thursday the 17th through to the end of the month, it’s ugly. Cross-winds, onshores, rain, and lumpy surf. Even when the swell is 8ft (2840), the wind chops it to pieces. Several days in a row with no real surf on offer. Good for kites, not for paddling.

Then Friday the 25th. 10ft of SW groundswell in the morning with a dead calm wind – glassy – and energy reading 5011. That’s a big, powerful, long-period swell (15 seconds). The guide says it might be too big for this break – experts only. The afternoon jumps to 13ft (11961) but with a cross-on breeze, so messy.

Saturday the 26th: 12ft (6587) morning, 10ft (4543) afternoon, both with offshore or cross-off winds. Again, expert territory. Huge, clean, but dangerous.

Sunday the 27th settles to 6ft (1507) with clean cross-off winds, but it’s not scoring high.

The best on offer? For the brave, the morning of Friday the 25th – glassy, giant, groundswell. For everyone else, Wednesday the 16th morning gives you clean, small waves. Isolators is a consistent reef and draws a crowd often, so plan for company.

Rusty.

Short Range Forecast

Mostly dry. Warm (max 24°C on Wed afternoon, min 11°C on Mon night). Winds decreasing (fresh winds from the E on Mon night, calm by Wed afternoon).
