The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here. Alright, we’ve got a mixed bag for Yallingup Beach over the next two weeks. The week kicks off pretty rough, but there’s some real gems hiding in there if you’re patient.
We start off with a big, messy system on Monday the 17th. Light rain, 50 km/h cross-shore wind from the west-southwest, and a solid 20 ft swell – but the wave energy is absolutely pumping (9408), and the surf is just poor. Not a paddle, just a washing machine. Tuesday the 18th is still rough with a 15 ft swell and cross-onshore wind, but the energy is huge (10045). The water temp is 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little surprise. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are still marginal, with 13 ft to 15 ft swell and cross-onshore breezes, but the energy stays high (7632 to 9864). The surf is still not great, lots of chop.
Now, here’s the standout. Friday the 21st of August brings a glassy, clean morning. The wind drops to just 5 km/h from the east-northeast – glassy conditions. The swell is 10 ft from the southwest with a 14-second period, and the energy is still strong (4336). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, but it’s a solid size – over 8 ft – so only for the crew who know what they’re doing. The long period (14 seconds) means better shaped waves, but it can make the sets a bit wider at a beach break. Saturday the 22nd is another glassy morning with 10 ft swell from the southwest and a 16-second period, energy at 3953. The Saturday afternoon cleans up nicely with a cross-off wind and 8 ft swell – still a cracking option for the weekend.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th get a bit messy again with cross-shore winds, but the wave energy stays moderate to strong. From Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 27th, we see a return to cleaner conditions. The 25th morning has a 13 ft swell from the southwest with a light cross-shore breeze, and the energy is still chunky (7741). The 27th Thursday morning is another glassy one with a 8 ft swell from the west-southwest – a bit smaller, but still glassy, so a good option for a less intimidating session.
The surf then fades a bit, but Friday the 28th afternoon offers a glassy, 10 ft swell from the west-southwest with a 15-second period, and the energy is solid (4364). That’s a late-week treat. The final weekend (the 29th and 30th) gets blown out again with strong winds, and the 31st and 1st of September are just wild – near gale winds and 16 ft swell – avoid that.
Overall, the best windows are the glassy mornings of Friday the 21st, Saturday the 22nd, and Thursday the 27th, plus the Friday the 28th afternoon. The swell is big, so it’s not for beginners, but if you’re experienced, you’ll score. The wave energy is moderate to strong throughout, so there’s plenty of push. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal, which is nice. Expect crowds sometimes, especially on the weekends. Keep an eye on the tides, as the forecast does mention questionable conditions on some days.
