The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. This is a bit of a mixed bag for the next couple of weeks. If you’re looking for a clean window, you’ve got to be patient. The first few days have solid swell, but the wind is a problem. The real standout is the coming Friday morning when everything lines up perfectly. But before that, and after it, there’s a fair bit of messy, challenging conditions to wade through.

The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, so you can leave the thickest wetsuit at home.

We’re looking at Noises, a reef break that’s exposed and prefers swell from the WSW. It’s a consistent, advanced wave, so this isn’t the spot for learners.

Thursday morning (20th August) kicks things off with a solid 13 ft WSW swell, but it’s coming in with a cross-on wind from the WSW at 15 km/h. The combined energy is strong at 7197, and the period is 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. But with that cross-on wind, it’s going to be choppy and a bit of a battle. It’s marginal surf, and the tide might play tricks on you too.

Thursday afternoon doesn’t improve much. Still 13 ft, this time from the SW, but the wind swings to the SSW at 15 km/h, still cross-on. It’s a similar story – messy and not the best.

Now, here’s the one to circle. Friday morning, the 21st of August. The wind drops to a dead calm – glassy as it gets. The swell is still a solid 12 ft from the SW with a 14-second period, and the energy is very strong at 5427. This is exceptional surf, but it’s for expert surfers only. That size on a reef is no joke. The conditions will be pristine, with no wind ripples. If you’re skilled and confident, this is the best session of the entire forecast.

Friday afternoon sees the wind come back, light from the SSW, creating a slight cross-on chop. The swell holds at 12 ft, but the quality drops off.

From Saturday the 22nd through to the end of the month, it’s a long stretch of marginal to poor conditions. The swell is still pumping, but the wind is almost always cross or cross-on, with speeds picking up. The 23rd (Sunday) has strong cross-shore winds at 25 km/h, making it rough. The 25th and 26th see the swell building back to 13-15 ft, but with rain and strong cross-on winds, it’s a write-off. The 27th and 28th get messy with 45 km/h winds and rain. It’s a long, tough period.

There’s a brief light on the 30th (Sunday) and 31st (Monday) with the swell dropping and then building again. Monday the 31st looks promising on paper – 13 ft to 18 ft from the WSW with a 12-second period and a cross-shore wind – but it’s still marginal. The energy is through the roof (8780 and 9110), but the period is shorter, and it’s a cross-shore chop. Not the cleanest.

After that, we hit September with more rain, stronger winds, and a messy outlook. The 3rd and 4th see big 16 ft SW swells, but with 40 km/h winds, it’s a no-go for paddle surfing. At that size and wind, you’d be looking at a kite session if anything.

So, the bottom line: Friday morning is the one. Everything else is a grind, with a few windows that are just okay. The first week is a bit of a washout, and the second week is even more uncertain. It’s a dry spell, but that one glassy morning makes it worth keeping an eye on.

Rusty.
