The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the waves for Noises over the next couple of weeks. Straight up, we’ve got a massive pulse of long-period groundswell from the southwest on the way, but this is a reef break that only works for advanced surfers, and the wind is going to mess with us for a lot of the run. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus.
The first real shout is Tuesday, 14 July. We’ve got a solid 10-foot southwest swell rolling in with a 15-second period, combined energy is pumping at 4309 (moderate-strong). The morning is clean with a light northeast cross-off breeze, so the waves will be holding their shape. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, but it’s a serious paddle out and the crowd factor is real – this spot can get busy. It’s a heavy reef, so respect it. The afternoon holds similar size and conditions, still clean.
The standout, and I mean the absolute standout, lands on Wednesday, 29 July. The morning brings a 15-foot southwest swell, a 16-second period, and combined energy is cranked to 10618 (very strong). The wind is light east-northeast cross-off, making for clean conditions. The water is clear. This is exceptional surf for expert surfers only – this is not a beginner wave. If you’re solid and you can handle a big, powerful reef, that morning is the best on offer. The afternoon is even glassier with a 3 mph west-northwest wind, 15-foot swell, and 17-second period, pushing energy to 11768 (very strong). That afternoon window is as good as it gets.
Now, before that, we have to wade through some ugly stuff. Wednesday, 15 July, is a write-off with 25 mph winds. Thursday, 16 July, has a brief window in the afternoon: the wind goes glassy, 10-foot swell from the WSW, 14-second period, and combined energy of 3695 (moderate). It’s clean, but it’s a fleeting moment. The weekend from 18 July onward is hammered by strong onshore winds and massive, messy swell – 20-foot on Saturday morning with 25 mph onshore wind is a hard no. That’s more for kite surfers than paddle surfers.
The end of the first week and into the second week is almost entirely blown out or onshore and choppy. There’s a small window on Thursday, 23 July afternoon, with a clean 6-foot swell from the southwest and a 9 mph south-southeast cross-off, but it’s marginal. The real return to form doesn’t happen until the very end of the 16-day run.
To sum it up: Tuesday, 14 July is the best early option, but the gold is Wednesday, 29 July – that’s a day for the books. The rest of the period is mostly a battle with the wind, so you’ll be waiting for that last week to pay off.
Rusty.
