The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming down the pipe for Noises. This is a solid, exposed reef break that loves a good WSW swell, and it's a spot for the experienced crew – it's a shallow, technical wave that demands respect.

We're kicking off right now, but the first few days are a bit of a battle. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are pumping with some serious size – we're talking 13ft to 16ft of swell, with a massive amount of energy in the water (around 9848 to 11166). The problem is the wind is all wrong, smashing it onshore and making it a choppy, lumpy mess. It's a lot of water moving, but it's not going to be a pretty picture. You'd be better off watching from the cliff.

Then, we get a window that's the real standout. Friday morning, the 21st of August, is the one to circle. The wind drops to absolutely nothing – glassy. The swell hangs around a solid 12ft, still a big wave, but it's a long-period groundswell from the SW (15 seconds), and the combined energy is still formidable (5927). For the advanced surfer who knows Noises, that glassy morning with a clean, powerful SW swell is about as good as it gets. It's a true expert-only session, but it will be a memorable one. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

After that, the wind gets messy again for the rest of the weekend and into the start of the following week. The swell drops a bit, but persistent cross and cross-onshore winds spoil the party. The energy drops off significantly too, falling into the 2000-4000 range.

The next real glimmer of hope comes late in the window. Thursday the 27th of August sees a nice shift. The swell is a more manageable 10ft, and more importantly, we get clean offshore winds from the ENE in the morning. The energy is moderate (3996), but the conditions should be excellent for experienced surfers. It's a better bet for a longer session than the Friday stand-out, even if it's not quite as big.

The rest of the run into early September is a real mixed bag. There's a promising morning on the 1st of September with clean cross-off winds and a 7ft swell, but it's a long way out. The following days look like they'll be back to wind-affected, with another pulse of big, messy swell showing up around the 2nd.

So, bottom line: brace for the initial big, windy mess. The absolute standout is Friday morning, the 21st – glassy and huge. If that's too big, keep an eye on Thursday the 27th for a cleaner, still powerful session. Everything else is a gamble on the wind.

Rusty.
