The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Noises. It’s a solid exposed reef that lights up with a good SW groundswell, and boy, are we getting one. The combo energy is pumping at 10971 – that’s proper strong – and it’s all coming from the optimum WSW direction. The water’s sitting at 67°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. But we’ve got some wind challenges to work around before things really clean up.
The opening window is Tuesday the 18th. Morning has a serious 15 ft swell from the WSW with a very long 16-second period, but it’s a bit onshore with a cross-on breeze. It looks marginal and a bit lumpy, so not ideal. Tuesday afternoon gets worse with a 15 ft swell and strong 16 mph cross-onshore winds – that’s a chop fest.
Wednesday the 19th keeps the size at 15 ft to 16 ft, with that same deep WSW pulse, but the wind stays cross-on. It’s still marginal. The power is huge, but it’s not looking clean.
Thursday the 20th the swell drops a touch to 13 ft, but we’re still dealing with cross-onshore breezes. The energy is still moderate-strong at 7197. It’s surfable but not firing.
Friday the 21st – this is the standout of the whole forecast. We’re getting a solid 12 ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period, so it’s a proper groundswell, and the wind is glassy – dead calm in the morning. Zero wind, zero chop, perfect lines. The combined energy is still strong at 5500. This is the pick of the bunch. The reef will be holding those long-period lines clean. It’s going to be well overhead for most, so keep it to the experienced crew. Get amongst it early.
Saturday the 22nd still has a 10 ft SW swell, but the wind swings cross-shore and then cross-onshore in the afternoon, turning it messy. Sunday the 23rd is similar but smaller at 8-10 ft, and the cross-onshore wind doesn’t let up.
From Monday the 24th through to Thursday the 27th, the swell drops down into the 6 ft to 8 ft range, and the wind is a mess – strong cross-onshore or cross-shore, creating lumpy, choppy conditions. The wave energy is only low to moderate (between 1741 and 2943). Not really worth the paddle.
Friday the 28th has a little 5-6 ft SW groundswell, but the period drops and the wind is fresh and cross. It’s just not coming together.
Look ahead to Saturday the 29th – we get a pulse of 8-10 ft WSW groundswell with a 16-second period again, and the wind goes light cross-shore. That’s promising, but we’re over a week away, so keep it on the radar.
Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st hold around 8-10 ft from the WSW with lighter breezes, and the energy is moderate (2735-4580). It’s marginal but could be okay for a session if the wind plays ball.
Into September 1st and 2nd, the swell stays around 10-12 ft, but the wind goes cross-on or cross-shore again, so not great. The period drops to 13-14 seconds, but it’s still a solid swell.
In summary: Friday the 21st morning is your golden ticket – glassy, 12 ft groundswell, and the reef will be stacking up. Get it while it’s clean. The weeks bookending that have solid size but the wind is fighting it.
Rusty.
