The Lowdown

Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Noises. This is a reef break, so it’s a spot for the crew who know what they’re doing. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than we’d usually expect for this time of year – a nice little bonus.

The first real chance to get wet won’t be until Friday morning, the 21st of August. Thursday afternoon is a write-off, just a messy 13ft cross-on mess with the swell energy pumping at 7196. You’d be fighting a losing battle. But Friday morning, clear skies roll in and the wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the SSE. That’s a major positive. The swell drops a touch to 12ft from the SW, with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is still a solid 5427. For the advanced surfer, this is the standout of the whole window. The sets will be powerful, with long gaps between them, making the paddle out manageable. This is the one to circle.

Friday afternoon sees the wind shift to a light cross-shore, still clean enough, but it’s not as perfect as that morning glass. Over the weekend, conditions deteriorate. Saturday and Sunday bring increasing cross-onshore winds, and the swell hangs around 8ft to 10ft, but the quality drops off. The energy is still moderate to strong (2878 to 4301), but the chop makes it a slog. By Monday the 24th, the wind goes light again, but it’s cross-on, so the surface is a bit scruffy.

Then we hit a real dry spell. From Tuesday the 25th right through to the end of the month, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, and the swell gets seriously big. On Wednesday the 26th of August, we’re looking at 18ft of swell from the WSW with a very long 18-second period – the combined energy hits a massive 19568. That’s not a surf, that’s a reef-destroyer. Only for the absolute elite, and even then, it’s a risk. A couple of days later, on the 27th, the wind swings cross-offshore, which cleans things up, but the swell is still 15ft to 16ft, so it’s raw and powerful. Thursday the 27th morning is your next best bet, but it’s still a big, heavy wave.

The first week of September doesn’t offer much relief. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, and the swell stays in the 12ft to 15ft range. The energy values are still high (3676 to 7502), but the conditions are just poor. There’s a brief window on Wednesday the 2nd morning with a little more promise, but the onshore wind will ruin it.

If you’re looking for the best of the best, it’s hands down Friday morning, the 21st of August. Glassy, long-period groundswell, and a reef that will handle it. The second-best moment is Thursday morning, the 27th of August, but that’s for the big-wave crew only. The rest of the run is full of gaps and rough conditions, so don’t expect much.

Rusty.
