The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The outlook for Noises is a bit of a mixed bag – a slow start, but there’s a couple of real gems hiding in the second week if you’re patient and you’ve got your wits about you.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice little bonus, you won’t be freezing your toes off.
The first few days are a write-off, honestly. Sunday the 19th is a no-go with rain showers and a messy cross-on breeze. The swell is a hefty 12 ft, but the wind is junk, and the combined energy is a whopping 4097 (moderate to strong), but it’s all for nothing with that wind. Monday and Tuesday are barely better, with onshore or cross-shore winds and the swell staying over 7 ft. The quality is just poor.
Then, Wednesday the 22nd is where it starts to get interesting. The morning sees a clear sky and light offshore ESE wind, with a 8 ft SW groundswell rolling in on a 16-second period. That’s a very long period, which means thick, powerful lines. The combined energy is a massive 5109 (strong). This is expert territory, though. For a reef break, that long period is a dream – it’ll groom those waves perfectly. The afternoon gets even better: 12 ft and clean, with a cross-off breeze. This is a true standout for the experienced crew. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so a mid-week morning session might be your best bet.
Thursday the 23rd keeps the quality high with a 8 ft SW swell and glassy conditions in the afternoon. The wind goes dead calm, and it’s a beautiful, clean setup. That’s a 4/5 on the quality scale for experienced surfers.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th gets blown out again. Strong winds and rain return, with a short-period 7-second swell Saturday afternoon making for a total mess. The 26th is just as rough with strong onshore winds. This is more kite-surfing territory than paddling.
Monday the 27th is a monster – 15 ft of SW swell, but the wind is a fresh cross-on. The energy is a massive 7998 (strong), but the conditions are lumpy. The afternoon cleans up as the wind swings cross-off, making it a 6/10 for wavability, but it’s still a handful.
Now, the real standout of the whole period is Wednesday the 30th. The morning is clean with a 5 ft SW swell and a 16-second period, but the afternoon is where it’s at. 7 ft of SW groundswell with an 18-second period, blowing offshore from the east. The combined energy is 3157 (moderate to strong). This is a 5/10 quality score, but for a reef break, that long period and offshore wind is a recipe for perfection. The waves will be lined up, hollow, and worth the paddle out. Crowds are possible, so get there early.
Thursday the 31st and Friday the 1st of August get out of control. The swell jumps to 26 ft and 28 ft with a 17-18 second period. The energy numbers are astronomical – 38081 and 43355 (very strong). The wind is favorable, but the swell is too big for the break. This is for absolute experts only, and even then, it’s a massive risk.
Saturday the 2nd of August is still big at 15 ft, but the wind is fresh and cross-off, making it clean. The energy is 9763 (very strong). It’s a 7/10 for the brave.
After that, the 3rd of August sees the wind turn onshore again, and the swell is too big for the break. It’s a wrap for the reliable paddling.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Wednesday the 23rd of July afternoon for the glassy conditions and clean 7 ft swell, and Wednesday the 30th of July afternoon for the long-period, offshore perfection. The 30th is the one to circle in your calendar.
Keep the stoke, but keep your head on a swivel.
