The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Noises over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of south-west groundswell lining up, and while the first few days are a bit messy with cross-onshore winds, there’s a real gem hidden in there for the experienced crew. The water’s sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 66° with a 3° anomaly, so it’s a bit of a treat.
The first real standout is Friday, the 21st of August. Early morning we’ve got a 12 ft swell from the SW with a 14-second period, and the wind is dead calm – glassy. This is proper clean surf for the experts, given the size. The combined energy is massive at 5427, so you’ll feel the power. But be warned, with that long period, it’ll be breaking a bit straight at the beach, so it’s really a point or reef wave day. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, but for a session like that, it’s worth the company.
After that, conditions get a bit onshore again through the weekend and into the start of the week. The swell sticks around – 10 ft to 13 ft from the SW – but the wind is cross or cross-on, making it choppy. Not great for a clean ride, but there’s still energy in the water (3439 to 4764).
Then we hit a poor stretch from the 25th of August. The wind swings north-west and picks up, and the swell dips to 5 ft to 6 ft, but it’s all cross-onshore and choppy. Zero scores across the board. The 26th sees a big jump in swell – 15 ft from the WSW with a 17-second period and combined energy over 12000 – but the wind is sloppy with rain showers. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
Things start to clean up again on the 27th of August with a cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, but the swell is still a bit lumpy. By the 28th, we get a proper clean window on Friday morning: a 5 ft swell from the S with a 12-second period, light offshore wind from the ESE, and combined energy around 1526. It’s a smaller, cleaner option for experienced surfers – excellent conditions.
The 29th and 30th bring back some size with a 10 ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is cross-on or north-west, keeping things messy. The 31st into September is more of the same – big swell, poor wind. Not worth paddling out.
But look ahead to the 2nd of September – Wednesday morning. We’ve got a 10 ft swell from the WSW with a 13-second period, light offshore wind from the east, and combined energy of 3460. The notes say excellent conditions for experienced surfers. That’s a solid, promising call for the start of September, even if it’s a bit further out.
So, the pick of the run is Friday the 21st of August, early morning, for the cleanest, biggest groundswell. And if you can wait, the 2nd of September morning is another one to keep an eye on. For the rest, it’s a lot of wind and chop, so pick your windows carefully.
