The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ for Noises over this long stretch. It’s a reef setup that takes a solid South-West groundswell, and we’ve got a big run of swell coming, but it’s gonna take a bit of patience to get the clean windows.

The forecast shows a solid pulse of SW groundswell arriving, with some seriously long period energy that these exposed reefs love. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.

We start off with a bit of a rough patch. Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 26th is pretty much a write-off. The winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the wave quality is marginal at best. There’s a lot of energy out there—the combined energy is over 4000 – but the wind just has it messy. By Wednesday the 26th, things get downright nasty. The swell is pumping – 18ft with an 18-second period and combined energy is a massive 18100 – but the wind is howling from the WSW at 22 mph, making it a dangerous, lumpy mess. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, conditions are poor.

Thursday the 27th calms down a bit. We’ve got a 13ft SW swell with a 14-second period and gentle cross-shore breezes. The energy is still strong (6131), but it’s a better bet for a paddle out. It’s still a big, powerful wave for advanced surfers.

Now, here’s where we get the standout. Friday the 28th is the one to circle. The morning is calling for clean surf with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE. The swell is still a solid 8ft from the SW, period 12 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 1602. The wind is light, making for clean faces. This is the best balance of size and quality in the whole 16-day window. That’s the session to aim for.

The following weekend, Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th, is back to a bigger swell (8ft to 10ft) with a very long period of 16 seconds. The wind is howling from the north again, so it’s going to be lumpy and cross-chop. Monday the 31st shows a glimmer of hope in the afternoon with glassy wind (3 mph) and a 10ft WSW swell. The energy is high (4311), and if that glass holds, it’ll be clean and powerful, but it’s an expert wave at that size.

Looking into the first week of September, things get inconsistent. Tuesday the 1st has clean enough morning wind but a lot of swell. From Wednesday the 2nd onwards, the winds turn onshore and the conditions look poor through to Saturday the 5th. The swell is still there (7ft to 10ft), but the wind just ruins it. Sunday the 6th gets back into the marginal zone with onshore winds.

Overall, the forecast is packed with big groundswell, but the wind windows are tight. Friday the 28th morning is your best bet for a clean, fun session. The big stuff on Wednesday the 26th and the glassy Monday the 31st afternoon are for the experienced crew only. Don’t force it in the onshore junk. Rusty out.
