The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into what’s cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.

First up, we’re looking at a solid run of south-west groundswell heading into Noises, but patience is the name of the game early on. The first few days are a bit of a write-off with messy, cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions. Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 25th are all marginal, with that swell bumping around 8ft to 10ft but the wind just won’t play ball. You’ll be battling a moderate cross-chop, so I’d sit these out unless you’re desperate for a paddle.

Water temps are sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Now, Wednesday the 26th is where things get serious. We’ve got a big 18ft swell from the WSW rolling in, with a very long period of 18 seconds and combined energy spiking to 19985. That’s a lot of power – way too much for most. This is strictly expert territory, and even then, it might be too big for this reef break. Winds are light but cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. Not one for the faint-hearted.

Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th see the swell dropping back to a more manageable 8ft to 13ft, and crucially, we get clean conditions with cross-offshore winds from the SSE. Thursday morning looks the pick of these two days – 13ft of SW swell at 15 seconds, clean peaks, and moderate energy (6678). Friday’s a bit smaller but still clean. Good windows for experienced surfers.

The real standout, though, is Saturday the 29th. Morning brings a 8ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period, combined energy of 3402, and pure offshore wind from the east. That’s glassy, clean, and lined up. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers – this is the one to circle.

Then Sunday the 30th morning is a beauty too. A 12ft WSW swell, 16-second period, and glassy conditions with a slight air. The combined energy jumps to 5562, and the forecast calls for exceptional surf for experts. The wind is dead calm – that’s a gift. If you can handle the size, this is your session.

After that, the first week of September gets messy again. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st are back to cross-onshore chop and poor surf. Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd have some size (12ft to 13ft) but the wind is onshore or cross-on, so quality drops. There’s a glimmer on Thursday the 3rd with light winds and a 10ft to 12ft SW swell, but the wind direction is straight on, so it’s unknown how it’ll hold up.

Looking further out, Saturday the 5th afternoon has a 20ft W swell with a short 10-second period – that’s a lot of water moving fast but not well shaped. Combined energy hits 6760. Then Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th bring absolute monsters: 26ft to 28ft WSW swell with 17-second periods and energy readings over 40000. That’s colossal, and way too big for this break. Only the most hardcore should even think about it, and even then, it’s probably not worth the risk.

So, bottom line: Saturday the 29th morning is your best bet – clean, offshore, and solid. Sunday the 30th morning is a close second if you’re after bigger, glassy conditions. The rest of the window is either too small, too windy, or too big. Stay safe out there.

Rusty.
