The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way for Noises.
We've got a solid, consistent run of good-sized south-west swell on the cards over the next couple of weeks, but the wind is going to be the main character in this story. The water’s sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – you might get away with a thinner wetsuit.
The standout session is going to be Friday morning, August 21st at Noises. The wind is glassy – dead calm from the north at just 3 mph – and you’ve got a clean 12 ft swell from the SW with a long 14-second period. The combined energy is pumping hard at (5427), making for powerful, well-shaped waves. This is expert territory at that size, but for the crew who can handle it, the conditions are exceptional.
Friday afternoon sees the wind swing onshore and the quality drops off, so make the most of that morning window.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off for quality – a moderate cross-shore breeze messes up the 8 ft to 10 ft SW swell. It’s not going to be pretty.
The next real window opens up Monday morning, August 24th. It’s still a bit lumpy with a gentle cross-shore from the NNW at 9 mph, but the 10 ft SW swell (14s period) is offering moderate energy (3091). It’s not perfect, but it’s the best of a so-so run.
Then, hold onto your board. Wednesday, August 26th sees a massive 16 ft SW pulse with an 18-second period. The combined energy reads an insane (16803). But here’s the deal – that’s too big even for this exposed reef. Unless you're a gun on a big-wave gun, it’s a no-go. The wind is onshore as well, so it’s a pass for surfing but might be a spectacle.
After that, Thursday the 27th morning cleans up slightly with a 13 ft SW swell and a gentle cross-shore from the S, but it’s still lumpy.
Friday morning, August 28th is a dark horse. Clean conditions with a light ESE cross-offshore breeze and an 8 ft SW swell. The energy is moderate (2172), but the clean face will make for some fun, rippable walls for experienced surfers.
The first few days of September look messy again with strong onshore winds. Saturday, September 5th might be the last call worth mentioning – a clean cross-offshore breeze and a solid 12 ft to 13 ft SW swell. The energy is moderate (4987) and the conditions could be alright for a crew that likes it big and clean. That’s a long way out though, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, if you’re an advanced surfer, Friday morning August 21st is the one. For everyone else, the pickings are slim with the wind patterns we’ve got.
