The Lowdown
Alright, gather 'round. Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for the Noises. We've got a solid 16-day window, but it's a bit of a mixed bag, so let's break it down.
First thing you gotta know: the water is sitting at 67°F with a positive anomaly of 3°F, so it's a touch warmer than what we usually get this time of year. Not a bad start.
The real action kicks off on Wednesday the 19th, but don't get too excited. We've got a big 16ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is a cross-on from the SW, making it choppy. The combined energy is massive (9915), so there's plenty of power, but it's not clean. This is a reef break that's consistent, and it's exposed to the swell, so the size is there, but the quality is lacking. It's really only for the advanced crew.
Thursday the 20th is a bit smaller, around 13ft, with the swell still from the WSW. The morning is choppy, but the afternoon cleans up a touch with a cross-shore wind. Still, it's a "marginal" call.
Now, if you're an expert, Friday morning the 21st is your window. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and the swell is a solid 12ft from the SW with a 15-second period (long period groundswell). The energy is still pumping (5500). This is for the experienced crew only—it's too big for beginners. Remember, a long period swell like this will be best at this reef setup, as it can break a bit too straight on a beach break.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a bit of a write-off with stronger winds and choppy conditions, though the swell sticks around. The combined energy drops through the 3000s, but the wind just ruins it.
The big standouts come later. The first real winner is Monday morning, August 24th. The wind swings to a light offshore from the NNE, and the swell is a clean 10ft from the SW. The combined energy is 2574, and it's described as "excellent" for experienced surfers. This is the best swell-to-wind combo we've seen so far. The crowd situation at Noises can be "sometimes" busy, so expect a few others out there for this one.
The next week gets interesting again. Wednesday, August 26th sees a huge pulse of 16ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is on it again. The afternoon of the 26th is better, with a cross-shore wind and 15ft swell, energy at 9690. Still, it's marginal.
The real gem for the experienced surfers is Thursday morning, August 27th. A gentle offshore wind from the ESE, a 10ft swell from the WSW, and a 14-second period. The energy is 6918, and it's described as "exceptional" for experts. This is your second standout.
The following weekend, Saturday the 29th, is okay but nothing special. The conditions are clean but the swell is around 6ft to 7ft.
Now, look ahead to Sunday, August 30th. The afternoon looks promising with a rain shower passing, but the wind is clean and the swell is 10ft from the WSW with a very long 18-second period. The energy is strong (6553) and it's flagged as "exceptional" for experts. This is a long-range standout, so it's a bit less certain, but it's got the potential to be the best of the whole run.
The first couple of days of September are a mix. Tuesday the 1st is a write-off with onshore winds. Wednesday morning, September 2nd, is a good call: a clean offshore wind from the SE, a 10ft swell from the WSW, and energy of 4190. It's "excellent" for experienced surfers.
The window closes on Thursday the 3rd with a big, messy 16ft swell and strong onshore winds. That's a kite-surfing setup, not a paddle-surfing one.
So, in a nutshell: the best on offer is the Monday morning, August 24th for the first week, and the Sunday afternoon, August 30th or Thursday morning, August 27th for the second week, depending on how the forecast holds. For the big stuff, you need to be an expert. The consistent nature of this reef means it won't stay flat for long, but the wind is the real deciding factor here.
Stay frothy, catch you in the water.
