The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wettie, I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Noises. This is a solid, exposed reef break that really only works for advanced crew, and it’s got a tricky setup. The water temp is pretty much where you’d expect it for this time of year, so no nasty surprises.
The first few days are a write-off, to be honest. Friday the 17th has some swell, around 7ft from the WSW, but the wind is a messy cross-shore and the combined energy is moderate at 1566. It’s just too chopped up to get excited about. Saturday the 18th is a total loss – big, stormy, onshore wind, with a massive 18ft swell and energy readings over 8000. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine. Sunday the 19th is still bumpy and onshore, even with an 12ft swell. Monday the 20th shows a little drop in size, but it’s still lumpy.
The real action starts to flicker on Wednesday the 22nd of July. The swell is still solid at 13ft from the SW, but the wind swings cross-offshore from the SSE, cleaning it up. The energy is strong at 5411. It’s a big, powerful wave, but it will be clean. For experts only.
The standout, and the best on offer, is Thursday the 23rd of July. The morning is looking prime. We’ve got an 8ft SW groundswell, period a solid 14 seconds, and the wind is offshore from the ENE, a gentle breeze. The energy is strong at 2726. This is an excellent window for experienced surfers. The reef will be handling that long-period SW swell nicely, giving you proper, well-shaped waves. The afternoon holds clean too, with 8ft and offshore E wind.
After that, the consistency drops off a bit. Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th have smaller, cleaner waves in the 5ft to 6ft range, decent for a paddle. But the next big one to circle on your calendar is Sunday the 26th of July afternoon. It’s a sneaky one. The swell is 8ft from the SW, with a very long 15-second period, and the wind is light from the NE, keeping it clean. The combined energy is strong at 3088. This is prime for a reef like Noises. The long gaps between sets will make paddling out easier, but the wave will have serious power.
Looking further out, the week of the 29th of July has some real promise. Wednesday the 29th afternoon has a 8ft SW swell with a 17-second period and light offshore wind. That’s excellent. But the absolute headliner in the long-range is Thursday the 30th of July. The morning is clean with a 6ft SW swell and a 20-second period, glassy conditions from light NNE wind. Then the afternoon goes glassy – flat calm, 7ft WSW swell, still with that massive 20-second period. The energy is very strong at 4342. That is a dream session waiting to happen, but it’s over a week away, so keep your fingers crossed.
The first week of August has a bit of a pulse, but the wind gets messy again. Overall, the best windows are Thursday the 23rd, Sunday the 26th afternoon, and the Thursday the 30th glassy session.
Stay stoked.
