The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s get into it.
The next couple of weeks at Noises are a real mixed bag, and honestly, the first week is a write-off. We’ve got a massive run of onshore and cross-onshore winds that are going to trash the surf. The swell is big, really big at times, with a combined energy reading of 4212 (moderate to strong) pushing through on the 15th, but with a 22 mph cross-wind, it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. That pattern sticks around. On the 18th, the swell punches up to 18 ft with a WSW onshore gale—that’s a massive 11736 combined energy (very strong), but it’s unsurfable for anyone. This is kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The whole first week and into the second is a write-off. We’re looking at poor to marginal conditions every single day until the 23rd. That’s over a week of waiting.
Then, finally, the tide turns. Thursday the 23rd of July is the standout. The wind swings light and cross-offshore from the NE, and the sea cleans right up. The swell is still a solid 10 ft from the SW at 14 seconds—that’s long-period groundswell, so it’ll have plenty of energy (3606 combined energy) and those longer lulls between sets. This is excellent for experienced surfers, but at 10 ft, it’s expert-only territory. That clean, lined-up swell will be a dream for the crew that can handle it, but crowds are possible here.
The quality holds through the 24th and 25th. On Friday the 24th, the swell drops a touch to 7 ft from the SSW, still clean with light NE winds. The 25th is similar: 7 ft from the SSW, offshore breeze, and clean. These days are a little more forgiving for strong intermediate surfers, still well overhead. The energy drops to around 1873 (moderate), but the shape will be there.
After that, we fade out. The 26th still has clean cross-offshore winds, but the swell drops to 4 ft, and then by the 27th, a strong NW wind and storms move back in, trashing the surf again. The rest of the month looks marginal or poor.
Overall, the best bet is Thursday the 23rd through Saturday the 25th of July. The 23rd is the biggest and best, but it’s for experts only. The 24th and 25th are the sweet spot for strong surfers.
Rusty.
