The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming for Noises.
First thing to say – we’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands. The forecast starts today, Wednesday the 15th of July, and the surf is just not on, with strong onshore winds and a messy 10ft SW swell. The water’s sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Don’t even think about paddling out this morning; it’s a cross-off wind but that energy is all over the place. The afternoon is even worse with a cross-shore chop. We’re looking at a solid run of poor conditions through to the 18th of July, with a massive 18ft to 16ft SW swell on the weekend that’s all wind-blown and onshore – that’s for big-wave experts only, and even then, it’s a mess. The pattern stays rough right through the 21st of July, with onshore winds and choppy, lumpy conditions. The combined energy is massive in places, hitting over 11,000 at one point, but it’s all wasted.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday the 22nd of July. We’ve got a clean 13ft SW groundswell (period 13 seconds) with a cross-off breeze from the SE, and the conditions are clean. The energy is strong (5922), but it’s still a big swell – better for the experienced crew. The following day, Thursday the 23rd of July, is where the standout sits. The morning sees a 12ft SW swell (period 14 seconds) with a cross-off from the ENE, and the afternoon is even better: 10ft SW with a light, cross-off NE breeze, giving clean, excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The energy is solid (3519 in the afternoon), and the optimum swell direction is WSW, which is close enough to the SW direction we’re getting. This is the best on offer – a true window of quality.
After that, the swell drops off. Friday the 24th of July is still surfable with a 8ft SW swell but a fresh cross-off wind, and Saturday the 25th of July has smaller 5ft to 4ft SSW swell, but it’s clean. By Sunday the 26th of July, the wind flips onshore again and the swell dies, so we’re back to a gap. There’s a small pulse on Monday the 27th of July with a 8ft WSW swell and light winds, but it’s onshore, so it’s marginal. The end of the forecast window on the 30th of July shows a promising 12ft SW long-period swell (17 seconds) with a cross-off SSE breeze, and the energy is hefty (7608). That’s a long way out, so treat it as a hopeful but less certain call.
For the standout, I’m pointing you to Noises on Thursday the 23rd of July afternoon. Clean, solid 10ft SW swell, light offshore breeze, and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so you might have company, but it’s worth it.
Rusty.
