The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into the outlook for Noises.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a classic case of too much of a good thing. The energy is sky-high for the first week, but it’s plastered with strong onshore winds, making it a write-off for paddle surfing. The real standout window is a beauty of a day over a week out, on the 24th of July, where everything lines up. For the rest of the run, we’re mostly watching the ocean roar, but not in a ridable way.
The opening on Wednesday the 15th is a big, powerful 10 ft SW groundswell with a very long 17-second period. The combined energy is a massive 4543, but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-off from the NNE. While it’s clean, 10 ft waves with that kind of period are strictly for the experts charging at this exposed reef. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 67°F.
Thursday the 16th is a mess. The swell drops to 10 ft from the WSW, but the wind swings onshore, and the morning session is a complete unknown. By afternoon, it’s a choppy cross-on mess. Skip it.
Friday the 17th sees the size drop to 7 ft, but the wind is all over the shop with rain showers. The quality is marginal at best.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a total loss. We’re looking at 15 ft to 18 ft of pure, raw SW swell with wind speeds of 19-25 mph blowing straight onshore. The combined energy is over 10,000 on Saturday afternoon. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine. Unless you’re a kite surfer looking for a challenge, stay on the beach.
The first half of the following week, from the 20th to the 23rd of July, is much the same story. Solid 7 ft to 15 ft swell, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the ocean lumpy and messy. There’s no let-up in the conditions.
Now, here’s the one that’s got my attention. The 24th of July, Friday morning. The swell is a solid 10 ft from the SW, with a 14-second period and a combined energy of 3124. The big news is that the wind goes light and clean, becoming a cross-off from the NNE. This is the only window in the entire 16 days where you get that powerful, long-period groundswell with clean, offshore conditions. It’s an advanced wave, no doubt, but for the crew that can handle it, this is the session of the outlook. Crowds are a possibility here, so be ready to share the peak.
After that, the 25th of July shows a drop in size and a return of lumpy cross-shore winds. The 26th through the 30th is a brutal run of fresh to strong onshore winds and solid, powerful swell. The 30th of July has a 13 ft swell with a 17-second period from the WSW and a combined energy of 8045, but it’s hammered by a 19 mph cross-on wind. Just another day of watching the ocean roar.
So, to wrap it up: the forecast is a long, frustrating wait for most of it, but the 24th of July is a genuine standout. If you’ve got the skills and the patience, that’s your day.
Rusty.
