The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Noises.
Water temp is about 66°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a little extra warmth.
First week is a bit of a struggle. We’ve got a solid, long-period groundswell (SW) starting on the 22nd, but the wind is a pain. Saturday morning the 22nd sees 10ft swell with a 16-second period, but it’s a cross-shore breeze and the combined energy is strong (4301). The surf is there, but it’s not clean. That pattern holds through Sunday and Monday, with the swell around 8ft to 10ft, but the wind stays cross or cross-on, keeping things choppy. Tuesday the 25th is a write-off with strong winds (20-25 mph), and Wednesday the 26th the swell jumps to 18ft with a massive energy reading (18843) – way too big for this reef break. That’s a kite day, not a paddle day.
Thursday the 27th drops to 13ft, but the wind is still cross and the energy is high (6228) – still marginal.
The standout window is the morning of Friday the 28th. The swell drops to a much more manageable 8ft, but the wind swings to a light cross-off from the SSE at just 3 mph. Conditions are clean, and the energy is moderate (1517). For a reef break like Noises, that’s a sweet spot – the long period (12 seconds) will give you some nice, lined-up waves, but it’s for experienced surfers only.
After that, Saturday the 29th through Monday the 31st of August has improving wind. The morning of the 31st is a gem: glassy conditions with a light W wind, 10ft swell from the WSW with a 15-second period, and a strong energy reading (5008). That’s a proper session for the experts – clean, powerful, and dead calm.
First week of September sees more swell. Thursday the 3rd has a clean 10ft morning with offshore E wind, but the period is a bit shorter (12 seconds). The real solid one is Friday the 4th of September – 15ft of SW groundswell (16-second period) and a very strong energy reading (10873). The wind is cross-on but light, so it’s not perfect, but the size is there for the big-wave crew.
The outlook then goes downhill into the 5th and 6th of September with strong onshore winds and messy conditions.
Best on offer is the glassy morning of the 31st of August, with the clean cross-off on the 28th of August a close second. Both are for the experienced crew only.
Rusty.
