The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. We've got a big, powerful swell train lining up at Noises, but the wind is going to be a real bastard for most of the run. The water's sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The whole show kicks off Monday afternoon, 17th August, with a solid 20ft WSW groundswell. The energy is cranking hard (9973), but it's blown out with a strong 28 mph onshore wind. This is not a day for a paddle. This much swell and that wind is more kite-surfing territory.
We've got a messy few days following. Tuesday the 18th is still big at 15ft, but it's cross-onshore and choppy. Wednesday the 19th is the same size, with a 15-second period, and the wind goes light and onshore, so it's a bit of a gamble with the tide. The energy is still massive (over 10,000 on Wednesday arvo). The pattern of onshore, marginal conditions holds through Thursday the 20th.
Then, on Friday morning the 21st of August, we get a window. The swell drops to a still-chunky 12ft from the SW, and the wind goes glassy. The energy is still strong (4869), but the conditions are finally clean. This is your best early bet, but it's a morning-only shot before the cross-onshore ruins it in the arvo.
Saturday morning the 22nd is another glassy, clean window with 10ft SW swell and a 16-second period. This is a top pick for experienced surfers. The energy is strong (4471), and the long period will make for some heavy, well-shaped waves, but at a reef break like Noises, be ready for the big sets.
The pattern gets messy again from Sunday. The swell drops to 8ft, but the wind is a cross-onshore chop by Monday. The energy drops back to moderate.
The next real standout is on Tuesday morning, 25th August. The swell jumps back up to 13ft from the SW, with a 13-second period, and the energy surges to its highest in the whole run (12457). The wind is only a light cross-onshore, so it's just a few ripples on the face. This is a massive, powerful day for experts only.
Thursday morning the 27th brings another glassy morning with 8ft swell, but it's a bit smaller. Then Friday the 28th is a cracker. The morning has clean conditions, a cross-offshore breeze, and 12ft WSW swell. The energy is solid (4929). That's a prime day for a paddle.
The run fades out into the end of August and start of September. Saturday the 29th gets a fresh cross-offshore, but the swell is small. The final days from the 30th onwards are all onshore, windy, and poor. September 1st brings rain and 28 mph onshore winds with 16ft swell. A total write-off.
So, the standout windows are Friday morning the 21st and Saturday morning the 22nd for the clean conditions, and Tuesday morning the 25th for the pure, raw power. Friday the 28th morning is also a solid, clean option. For the rest, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
