The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks at Noises. The setup is a consistent, exposed reef that demands respect – this is advanced territory, not one for the soft-top crew. Right through the period, the swell direction is locked into the southwest to west-southwest, which is exactly what this spot wants.
We’re kicking off with some solid, but messy, conditions. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 67°, something you’ll notice when you first hit the water.
The opening act on Sunday the 23rd is a write-off. We’ve got a moderate 8ft SW swell, but that 12 mph crosswind from the SSW is putting a nasty chop on it. The wave energy is strong (3554), but with marginal tides and messy conditions, it’s not worth the paddle.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th stay ugly. The wind clocks around to the northwest and cranks up hard, especially Tuesday with 25 mph gusts shredding the surface. The swell pulses up to 12ft on Tuesday afternoon, but it’s a total mess. Leave the boards on the rack.
Wednesday the 26th is the first real eyebrow-raiser, but it’s a dangerous one. We’ve got a massive 16ft WSW groundswell with a period of 18 seconds – that’s very long-period energy, which at a reef like Noises will be bending and heaving. The combined energy is off the charts (16432). The wind is light, but it’s still cross-onshore. This is strictly for experts only, and only if you’ve got a death wish and know the reef channels. The tide might be okay, but that size makes it a no-go for 99% of surfers.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th see the swell dropping back to a more manageable 12ft to 8ft. The real winner here is the wind turning cross-offshore from the SSE, giving us clean, peeling faces. Thursday morning is still a bit lumpy, but by Thursday afternoon and all through Friday, the conditions clean right up. The energy is moderate to strong (4747 down to 1190), and the long-period SW groundswell (14-12 seconds) will be wrapping nicely into the reef. This is your window for solid, challenging waves without the out-of-control chaos.
Now, if you’re looking for the standout session of this whole outlook, it’s Saturday morning the 29th of August. The swell is a solid 10ft from the SW with a 16-second period – that’s a proper groundswell with heaps of energy (4708). The wind is a light offshore breeze from the NNE. That’s glassy, clean conditions on a powerful, long-period swell at an exposed reef. The score inside says excellent for experienced surfers, and I can feel it in my bones. Get on it early, because the afternoon turns cross-on.
Sunday the 30th is still okay – clean with a 10ft SW swell and a light offshore breeze from the north, but the energy is dropping (3940). Monday the 31st starts to deteriorate with the wind coming back onshore from the northwest, and from Tuesday the 1st of September right through to Thursday the 3rd, we’re looking at a full-on blowout. Strong onshore winds from the west and west-northwest, some rain, and 8ft to 15ft of messy junk. Unsurfable.
Friday the 4th of September sees a glimmer of hope – 10ft SW swell with a light onshore breeze, but it’s only marginal. The weekend of the 5th and 6th of September is mostly poor, with clean conditions only a distant memory. The final session on Monday the 7th of September throws up another absolute beast – 23ft SW swell with a 15-second period and energy hitting 21251. As tempting as the light winds sound, this is too big for Noises. Pure big-wave tow-in territory, not for paddle surfing.
So, the one and only call to clear the diary for is Saturday the 29th of August, first light. A powerful, clean groundswell with offshore wind at an advanced reef. That’s the one.
