The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s happening at Surfers Point (Ventura). This is an exposed reef that loves a solid WSW swell, but the next 16 days are a rollercoaster. The water is about 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the ocean’s got that extra bit of warmth.
We start off on Saturday the 22nd with a big 10ft SW swell, with a 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell. But the wind is a cross-on 12 mph from the SSW, making it choppy and messy. Sunday and Monday are similar: plenty of swell around 8ft to 10ft, but the wind stays cross-on or sideshore, keeping things lumpy. Tuesday the 25th gets ugly with a strong 22 mph NNW breeze and rain; the surf is a write-off. By Wednesday the 26th, a monster 18ft WSW swell hits with an 18-second period. The energy is insane (18843 combined energy), but it’s simply too big for this break unless you’re a true expert, and even then, the wind is still messy.
The first real standout arrives on Friday the 28th morning. The swell drops to a clean 8ft from the SW, with a 12-second period, but the wind turns offshore from the SSE at just 3 mph. The conditions are clean and glassy – excellent for experienced surfers. Saturday the 29th morning holds similar clean conditions with a 7ft SW swell, though the wind is light cross-off from the NNE, still very rideable.
The second week gets interesting. Thursday the 3rd of September morning looks great: a clean 10ft SW swell with a 12-second period, and glassy offshore wind from the ESE at 3 mph. The afternoon bumps up to 12ft SW, still with light offshore SSE wind – both sessions are excellent for experienced surfers. Friday the 4th of September brings a solid 15ft SW swell with a 16-second period. The morning has a moderate cross-shore from the north, but the afternoon sees the wind drop to a light cross-on from the NNW. This is a big, powerful swell (energy around 9400-10873). It’s big – definitely for experienced crew only – but the wave quality is promising, making it the real standout of the second week.
Unfortunately, the run ends poorly: Saturday the 5th through Sunday the 6th of September sees strong onshore wind and rain, ruining the 10ft-13ft swell.
Bottom line: If you’re after clean waves, Friday the 28th morning is the pick early on. For a bigger, more powerful session, Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September are the standouts, but you’ll need to be comfortable with solid surf. This break is for advanced surfers only, and with a crowd rating of ‘often’, expect company when it’s good.
