The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Surfers Point.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but you’re gonna have to be patient through some messy conditions early on. The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus.
The week kicks off with a bit of a wait. Friday the 17th has some swell, but it’s not really worth paddling out for – the wind is messy and the quality just isn’t there. Saturday the 18th is a write-off, with strong onshore winds and a huge, chunky swell (12,392 combined energy) that’s just blown out and dangerous. Forget it.
Sunday the 19th through Monday the 20th isn’t much better. The swell is still solid – around 10ft from the WSW – but the wind is cross-on and the surface is choppy. It’s frustrating because the energy is there, but the conditions are holding it back.
Now, things start to look up on Tuesday the 21st. Tuesday morning is the first real standout. We’ve got a clean 10ft SW groundswell (period 14 seconds) with a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong (2,967 combined energy), and it’s going to be a proper session for experienced surfers. The crowd at Surfers Point can be a problem though – it’s often busy here, so get in early.
But the real gem of the whole forecast lands on Wednesday the 22nd. Wednesday morning sees glassy conditions, not a breath of wind, with a solid 12ft SW swell (period 13 seconds). The energy is pumping (3,905 combined energy) and the waves will be clean and powerful. This is the best on offer for the first week – a true standout for the experienced crew.
The rest of the week stays rideable but not as special. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are okay, but the wind starts to swing back onshore, making it a bit of a struggle. Saturday the 25th afternoon cleans up again with a light cross-off breeze and a 7ft WSW swell – that’s a solid option for a weekend paddle.
Then, on Sunday the 26th, we get another gem. The morning is dead glassy with a 4ft SW groundswell (period 18 seconds – very long!). That’s a classic point break setup, and the energy is still moderate (2,130 combined energy). It’ll be clean and lined up, but that long period might make it a bit straight at times. Still, a beautiful morning session.
The second week gets a bit more uncertain. Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th are average at best – bumpy and cross-on. Wednesday the 29th has a massive pulse of energy (8,795 combined energy) with an 8ft WSW swell and a very long period of 21 seconds, but it’s got a strong cross-onshore wind. That’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing one.
The last real standout of the run is Friday the 31st of July. Both the morning and afternoon are glassy, with a clean 7–8ft WSW swell. The energy is strong (3,762 combined energy) and the conditions will be perfect for the experienced surfer. That’s a promising one to circle on the calendar.
Finally, Saturday the 1st of August has a massive 13ft WSW groundswell (period 18 seconds, 11,489 combined energy) with a clean cross-offshore breeze. That is a serious swell – only for experts – and it’s a full two weeks out, so while it looks incredible, it’s a long-range call and might change.
So, the two best sessions to lock in: Wednesday the 22nd of July morning, and Friday the 31st of July. Both offer glassy conditions and solid, powerful swell. Get after it.
Rusty.
