The Lowdown

Alright folks, let’s take a look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks. It’s a long outlook, but I’ll talk you through the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a massive pulse of energy hitting Surfers Point. This is a deep-water reef break that’s fully exposed, so it can handle the size. The water temp is sitting at 66.7°, which is a touch warmer than we’d usually expect for this time of year, so that’s a nice surprise.

We’re starting on Wednesday the 19th of August with a solid 16.4 ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 15 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and the combined energy reading is 9915, which is very strong. The wind is a cross-on 12 mph though, so it’s going to be a bit choppy and messy. This is advanced territory only – 16.4 ft waves are not for the faint-hearted. The conditions are marginal, but the raw power is there.

Thursday the 20th drops a little, but still has 13.1 ft swell from the same direction. The wind eases to 6 mph, which helps, but it’s still a cross-on. The energy drops to a still-strong 7197. It’s a little cleaner, but still not glassy. The afternoon sees a switch to clearer skies, and the wind stays light, making it a better window.

Friday the 21st of August is the standout. The morning brings a glassy 11.5 ft swell from the SW with a 15-second period. The wind is a light 3 mph from the NW, which is offshore for this break. The conditions are described as exceptional for experts. The combined energy is 5680, which is still powerful. This is the best session on offer for the first week – clean, big, and lined up. The afternoon gets a bit of a cross-on breeze, so get in early.

Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd see the swell start to back off, but it’s still in the 8.2 ft to 11.5 ft range. The wind picks up and swings more to the SSW, making it cross-onshore and choppy. The energy is still moderate, but the quality is dropping. Not the best days.

Monday the 24th is similar, with a cross-on wind and dropping swell. The energy is around 2000-3000, which is moderate. It’s surfable, but not exciting.

Tuesday the 25th is a write-off. Swell is mixed, wind is up to 16 mph, and the conditions are poor. Scores are a zero. Not worth paddling out.

Wednesday the 26th is a real wild card. We’ve got another 16.4 ft pulse from the WSW, with a 16-second period and a combined energy of 13858. That’s huge. But the wind is a strong 16 mph onshore, and it’s raining. The conditions are poor, and it’s blown out. This is a dangerous, messy beast. Only for the absolute hardcore, and even then, it’s not fun.

Thursday the 27th sees the wind easing and swinging to the south, giving a cross-off breeze in the afternoon. The swell is 11.5 ft to 13.1 ft, with a 14-second period. The energy is around 5500-6000. The afternoon session is clean, and that’s a good window for experienced surfers.

Friday the 28th is another small but sweet day. The swell drops to 5.9 ft to 6.2 ft from the SSW, with a 12-second period. The wind is a light cross-off, and the conditions are clean. The energy is low, around 1700-1990, but it’s a fun, clean wave for the experienced crew. The afternoon is described as excellent.

Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are small and not great. 4.3 ft to 5.9 ft swell, with a 17-second period, which is a very long period. For a reef break like Surfers Point, that long period can make the wave a bit too straight and walled. The wind is light, but the energy is low. Not a top pick.

Monday the 31st of August is a full no-go. Near gale force winds of 34 mph from the NW, with rain and thunderstorms. Swell of 8.2 ft to 9.8 ft from the WSW, but it’s completely blown out. Zero score. Stay home.

Tuesday the 1st of September sees a return to cleaner conditions. Swell picks back up to 11.5 ft from the WSW, with a 15-second period. The wind is a gentle 9 mph from the SSW, which is cross-on, but it’s manageable. The energy is moderate to strong. It’s a better day than the previous one.

Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September are the last decent windows. Swell is 8.2
