The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk about what’s heading our way over the next two weeks. We’ve got a classic winter groundswell train, but the wind is going to be the main factor, and a lot of the time it’s not going to play nice. The standout is right at the start, but there’s also a promising-looking window at the tail end of the forecast.

The best session of the whole period is Surfers Point (reef) on Tuesday, 14 July. We’re looking at a solid 10-foot groundswell from the SW with a very long 15-second period, packing some serious energy (4309). The wind is a light 6 mph from the NNE, which is a clean cross-off breeze. This is going to be firing and clean for the experienced crew. Water temps are about average for the time of year, so a standard summer wetsuit is fine. The afternoon holds up the same way with similar conditions—just a beautiful day of it. The only downside? It’s often crowded, and on a day like this, you can expect plenty of company in the lineup.

Wednesday, 15 July, has the same size and direction of swell, but the wind cranks up to 22 mph from the NNE. The morning is still a cross-off, but that fresh breeze will put a bit of texture on the face. The afternoon turns into a lumpy cross-shore mess, so get your sessions in early. Thursday, 16 July, is a write-off with onshore winds and rain.

The weekend from Friday, 17 July, through to Sunday, 19 July, is a mixed bag of onshore and cross-onshore winds. The swell is there, but it’s choppy and poor. That 18 July Saturday has a massive 20-foot swell (11360 energy) but it’s getting hammered by a 19 mph onshore wind. That’s a paddle-out mission for the hardcore only, and even then, it’s going to be a washing machine. For kite surfers, that setup might be more interesting than a paddle session.

The following week is a long, tough stretch. From Monday, 20 July, right through to around Thursday, 23 July, it’s a constant battle of strong winds, rain, and onshore conditions. The swell stays in the 7-foot to 8-foot range, but it’s all blown out. You’re looking at a solid 5-day gap of poor surf here.

We start to see a glimmer of hope on Friday, 24 July. The morning is still a bit choppy, but the afternoon settles down with a light 6 mph cross-on breeze and a 10-foot SW swell (3700 energy). It’s still a bit average, but it’s the best we’ve seen in days. Saturday, 25 July, is nothing special, but Sunday, 26 July, has a nice little window. A 10-foot SSW swell in the afternoon with light winds—it’s a cross-on, but at 6 mph, it’s only going to have small wind ripples. That’s a fun session.

The last real standout is Tuesday, 28 July. The morning is a no-go with onshore wind, but the afternoon delivers a solid 12-foot SW swell with a 17-second period (8115 energy) and a moderate 12 mph cross-off breeze. It’s a bit lumpy, but the energy is there and it’s the best we’ve seen in a while. That’s your long-range gem, but keep in mind it’s a week and a half out, so treat it as promising but not a sure thing.

So, to wrap it up: Tuesday, 14 July, is the absolute winner. Get it while it’s clean. The rest of the month is a battle with the wind, but keep an eye on that 28th.

Rusty.
