The Lowdown
Alright, let’s paddle out and see what’s coming. This is a solid run of south-west groundswell on the cards for Surfers Point (reef). It’s an advanced spot, very consistent, and exposed to the west-south-west, which is what this swell is bringing. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing too wild.
We’re looking at a bit of a rough start this Friday, 17th, with a 7ft swell from the west-south-west but it’s messy with a cross-shore wind and lumpy conditions. Combined energy is moderate (1566). The next few days are pretty grim – Saturday the 18th gets hammered by a huge 18ft onshore mess with a fresh breeze, that’s expert-only territory and even then, poor surf. The combined energy is strong (8176). Sunday the 19th is still on the wild side, 12ft with cross-onshore wind and choppy, not great.
Monday the 20th is still average, 7ft from the south-west, cross-shore, energy is moderate (2006). Tuesday the 21st is a write-off with 10ft and strong cross-onshore wind. The real turn comes on Wednesday the 22nd. The morning has a 13ft south-west swell, cross-offshore wind, and clean conditions. Combined energy is strong (5411). This is a standout for the experienced crew – big, clean, and powerful. Still a bit of a challenge, but the quality is there.
Thursday the 23rd is the pick of the first week. The morning brings 8ft from the south-west, a gentle offshore wind from the east-north-east, and glassy conditions. Combined energy is moderate (2726). The swell period is 14 seconds, so that’s a proper groundswell, giving long, clean lines. Excellent surf for experienced surfers. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 8ft, still clean with a light offshore.
Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are smaller, around 5ft to 6ft, but clean with cross-offshore winds. Good for a solid session, but not the standout. Sunday the 26th is a gem: 8ft from the south-west, 15-second period, and light offshore winds in the afternoon. Combined energy is strong (3088). That’s a top session for those who know the reef.
The following week from Monday the 27th to Tuesday the 28th holds clean, 8ft to 6ft waves, but the real standout is Thursday the 30th. The morning has 6ft from the south-west with a 20-second period – that’s very long period groundswell, and it’s clean with barely a breath of wind. Combined energy is very strong (4735). The afternoon is glassy, 7ft from the west-south-west, also 20 seconds. That’s a dream day for the reef, long waits between sets but perfect, lined-up waves. Friday the 31st brings a bigger 10ft, but it gets a bit cross-choppy, still good for the brave.
Overall, the best on offer is Thursday the 23rd and Thursday the 30th. The first is a big, clean, offshore day. The second is a glassy, long-period dream. Both are solid for experienced surfers. Crowds are often at Surfers Point, so expect company.
