The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty. Lookin’ at the next couple weeks at Surfers Point – there’s plenty of SW groundswell on the way, but the wind’s gonna be the story. The water’s running about 67°F, which is a touch warmer than normal – about 2°F above average for this time, so it’s a nice little bonus.

Friday morning (21 August) we’ve got a solid 12 ft SW groundswell at 14 seconds. Combined energy is pumping at 5427 (moderate-strong). Wind is light out of the NW at 3 mph, cross-onshore, so there’s just small ripples. It’s a reef break, advanced and very consistent – not for learners. The afternoon wind swings to the SSW at 9 mph, gets choppy.

Saturday (22 August) sees 10 ft swell with a 16-second period, but a 12 mph SSW cross-wind puts a chop on it. The longer period means longer lulls – good for paddling out but tricky on a reef with cross-chop. Sunday (23 August) holds 8 ft but winds stay cross.

The standout – Wednesday 26 August morning. Swell hits 16 ft from the WSW, 18-second period – that’s very long-period groundswell. Combined energy goes huge at 16803 (very strong). Wind is SSW at 9 mph straight offshore. The guidance says tide and wind are good, but this break is gonna be way too big for most – experts only. The afternoon gets lumpy with 19 mph cross-onshore wind.

Thursday (27 August) the swell drops to 13 ft, wind clean from the S at 9 mph – still a big groundswell (15 seconds), energy at 6856. Friday 28 August morning cleans up nicely – light SE cross-offshore at 6 mph, swell down to 8 ft at 12 seconds, glassy conditions, energy at 2172 (moderate). This is the sweet spot for a solid, clean session without the monster size.

Into the second week, from 30 August to early September, we see repeating pulses of 10 ft to 12 ft SW swell with long periods, but wind is often cross or onshore. The 1st September morning shows a nice WSW wind at 6 mph, 12 ft at 16 seconds (energy 5990) – promising but long-range. The 3rd and 4th September are blown out with fresh WSW winds and rain – skip those. Then Saturday 5 September cleans up with a SE cross-offshore, 13 ft at 13 seconds – clean faces and moderate energy.

Best bets: Wednesday 26 August morning for the big-wave crew, and Friday 28 August morning for a clean, manageable session. The second week has some potential around 1st and 5th September – cross your fingers on the wind.

Rusty.
