The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards for the Gold Coast, but don’t go thinking it’s all smooth sailing. This one’s a bit of a rollercoaster, so let’s get into it.
The main event is clearly pointing towards Surfers Point. This reef setup is exposed to the swell and it’s going to be pumping, but you’ve gotta pick your windows. The water’s sitting at 67°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a thinner spring suit.
We kick off proper on Sunday the 19th of July. The afternoon sees a solid 10ft SW groundswell, with a period of 13 seconds, pushing in from the southwest. The combined energy is a hefty 3315 (moderate to strong), but the wind is a cross-onshore 9 mph, making it fairly choppy. It’s surfable, but it’s not the pick of the week.
Monday the 20th is a write-off. The wind is onshore and strong, and the conditions are poor. Don’t bother.
Tuesday the 21st starts messy, but the afternoon shows a bit of promise. That 8ft SW swell cleans up with a gentle cross-offshore SSE breeze. It’s still not the standout, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Now, Wednesday the 22nd of July is where it gets real. This is the one you’ve been waiting for. The morning brings a solid 12ft SW groundswell with a long 16-second period, and the combined energy is a beefy 6537 (strong wave energy). The wind is a light 3 mph offshore from the east. That’s glassy, clean, and powerful. This is expert territory—over 8ft, so don’t even think about taking a beginner out here. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-offshore breeze, dropping slightly to 12ft but still packing a punch. If you’re an experienced surfer, this is your day.
Thursday the 23rd is still excellent. The swell drops to 8ft, but the wind goes glassy in the afternoon with a 0 mph northeasterly. Clean, smooth, and perfect for experienced surfers. The combined energy is still a solid 1741 (moderate to strong).
The rest of the run into the weekend and the following week is a bit of a mixed bag. Friday the 24th is smaller, around 5ft, but clean with nice cross-offshore winds. It’s a fun, smaller option.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th get blown out. Strong winds from the north and west, and a messy, lumpy ocean. The swell jumps up to 13ft and 15ft on Sunday, but the wind is onshore and strong. It’s not for paddle surfing. If you’re into kiting, the setup might look interesting, but for a regular surfer, it’s a skip.
Monday the 27th sees a massive 21ft SW swell, but the combined energy is off the charts at 16499 (very strong wave energy). The wind is cross-onshore and the swell is just too big for this break. This is a day for the experts only, and only if they’re feeling very brave.
Things settle down nicely from Tuesday the 28th. We get a return to clean, cross-offshore winds and a manageable 10ft to 8ft SW swell. The combined energy is back in the moderate range. Solid surfing.
Wednesday the 29th is a beauty. Glassy conditions in the morning with a 8ft SW groundswell. The period is a very long 17 seconds, which means long, clean lines and plenty of energy. It’s another standout for experienced surfers.
The final few days, from the 30th of July through to the 3rd of August, show a gradual drop in size but maintain good quality. The mornings are generally clean, with offshore or light winds, and the swell direction stays favourable. The 1st of August morning is particularly glassy with an 8ft, 18-second period groundswell.
So, to wrap it up, the absolute standouts are Wednesday the 22nd of July and Wednesday the 29th of July. Both are clean, powerful, and for experienced surfers only. The weekend of the 25th-26th is a write-off, and the 27th is too big. Don’t get caught out. Stay sharp.
Rusty.
