The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

First up, we’ve got a solid run of swell heading our way, but don’t get too excited just yet – the wind is going to be a real pain for a lot of it. The good news is, there are some absolute gems hidden in there, especially for the experienced crew.

The main event is at Surfers Point, a heavy reef break that’s only for advanced surfers. It’s very consistent and exposed, so it grabs whatever swell is out there. The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a thinner suit.

We kick off on Tuesday, July 14th. The morning is looking clean with a light 6 mph NNE breeze, cross-off. That’s a good sign. We’ve got a solid 10 ft SW groundswell rolling in with a 15-second period. The energy is pumping (4309), but this is serious, powerful surf. It’s not for the faint-hearted. The afternoon holds up with similar size and a clean surface, but the period drops slightly to 14 seconds.

Wednesday, July 15th, is a write-off. The wind ramps up to 22 mph from the NNE, turning the surface into a mess. The swell is still there, but you won’t want to be out there.

Thursday, July 16th, is a real tease. The morning is a gamble with rain and a WSW onshore, but the afternoon? That’s the standout of the first week. The wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the SSE, and the 10 ft SW swell is clean and lined up. The period is 14 seconds, so there’s real power there. This is your window for a proper session if you can handle the size.

From Friday, July 17th, through to the end of the third week of July, it’s a frustrating stretch. The swell sticks around, but the wind is predominantly onshore or cross-onshore, from strong to gale force. We see a big spike on Saturday, July 18th, with a massive 20 ft SW swell (energy hitting 11589), but it’s being hammered by a 25 mph onshore. That’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle day. The same goes for the following days – lots of energy, but terrible conditions.

The outlook improves again towards the end of the month. On Monday, July 28th, the wind swings back to a light cross-off from the NNE, and we get a 7 ft SW swell. It’s a glimpse of what’s to come.

Then, the real highlight. Tuesday, July 29th, is the absolute best of the forecast. The morning is clear with a light 6 mph NE cross-off, and the swell is a beefy 13 ft from the SW, period 14 seconds. The energy is pumping (5110). This is exceptional for experts. And if you think that’s good, the afternoon is even better. The wind goes glassy, and the swell jumps to 15 ft (energy 10618) with a 16-second period. It’s huge, clean, and powerful. This is a date to circle in the calendar.

The very last day, Wednesday, July 30th, is the absolute king. Morning is clear with a 6 mph NE cross-off, and the swell is 15 ft from the SW with a 17-second period. The energy is a massive 11768. The afternoon is glassy again. This is a once-in-a-forecast type of swell. It’s going to be huge, perfect, and absolutely packed at Surfers Point. If you’re an expert, you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss it. Just remember, that kind of size and power is not for everyone.

Overall, the first week is a battle with the wind, but the last two days of July are the real deal. Don’t sleep on them.

Rusty.
