The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming down the pipe for Surfers Point. It’s gonna be a bit of a wild ride with some serious size showing up, so strap in.
The pattern is pretty clear: we’ve got a run of messy, blown-out conditions kicking off Monday the 24th, with a solid but rough 10 foot SW swell and a nasty 15 km/h cross-onshore wind from the NW. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no shock there. That first Monday and Tuesday are write-offs—gusty 25–40 km/h winds, lumpy, choppy, just ugly. You won’t want a bar of it. The swell energy is strong (3045 on Monday, climbing to 3713 by Tuesday), but with that wind, it’s all for nothing.
Wednesday the 26th is where things get wild. We’re looking at a massive 16 foot WSW groundswell with a very long 18-second period. The combined energy absolutely pumps up to 17010, but honestly, that’s just too much for this reef—this is expert-only territory and even then, it’s on the edge of being dangerous. Winds are cross-onshore and it’s still choppy, so unless you’re a madman, give it a miss.
We get a bit of a breather from Thursday the 27th through to the start of September. Swell drops back to the 8 to 12 foot range, and while the period stays long (12–18 seconds), the wind is all over the shop—cross, cross-off, clean at times. The best of this patch is Saturday the 29th afternoon: an 12 foot SW swell with 18-second period and a light N wind making for gentle cross-shore chop. The score jumps a bit and the energy is solid (6779), but it’s still what I’d call average-surfable rather than epic. The rest of this stretch has clean windows on the 28th afternoon and 31st afternoon with cross-off winds, but the swell is weaker (7 to 8 foot).
Now, the real standouts are in the second week. If you can wait, mark your calendar for Friday the 5th? No, that’s a miss—onshore winds kill it. Saturday the 5th is a write-off too. But Sunday the 6th of September is the first big alert: a 16 foot WSW swell, 14-second period, and a fresh 30 km/h cross-offshore wind from the SE. That’s a clean, howling combo for this reef, with energy going mental at 11135. The waves will be huge, lined up, and moving fast. It’s still too big for beginners—expert only.
The absolute standout, the one you need to plan for, is Monday the 7th of September morning. This is the pick of the entire 16-day run. We’ve got an 18 foot WSW swell (14-second period) with a light ESE offshore wind of just 10 km/h, giving you glassy, clean faces at Surfers Point. The energy is off the charts at 12229, but the wind and swell direction are finally working together perfectly for this break. It’s exceptional, but I have to tell you straight—this is for expert surfers only. If you have the skills, this is the session you live for. Crowds are likely, as it’s a well-known spot, and it’s very consistent.
Monday afternoon also looks exceptional with a 15 foot SW swell and clean cross-off winds. After that, things start to taper off into Tuesday the 8th with a smaller 12 foot swell.
So bottom line: the first 8-9 days are mostly a battle against wind and size. The real gold is waiting for you on Sunday the 6th and especially Monday the 7th of September. Don’t sleep on it, but don’t go in over your head.
Rusty.
