The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's heading our way.

We've got a solid run of swell on the cards, but the wind is going to be the main character for much of it. The standout window is looking like Friday morning, 28 August, but we've got to get through a bit of a messy stretch first to get there.

The whole period kicks off with some serious size. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd see a solid 8ft to 10ft SW groundswell rolling in with a long 16-second period. The wave energy is strong, hitting 4301 on Saturday morning, but the wind is a cross-shore from the SSW at 12 mph, putting a bit of a chop on the face. It’s not terrible, but it’s not clean. Conditions are similar through Sunday, with the chop keeping it from being great. Monday the 24th morning looks a little better with a gentler cross-shore, but that clean-up doesn't last; Monday afternoon and all of Tuesday the 25th are a write-off with strong, lumpy cross-onshore winds.

Wednesday the 26th is a beast of a day, but not for surfing. The swell jumps to 18ft from the WSW with an incredibly long 18-second period and the combined energy is a massive 18100. That’s a huge amount of power, but with a fresh cross-onshore wind and that kind of size, this break will be maxed out and dangerous – strictly for the brave or the stupid. By Thursday the 27th, the swell drops back to a still-chunky 12ft to 13ft with 14-second period, and the wind turns light cross-shore. The energy is still very high at 6131, making it a powerful session for experienced surfers only.

Now for the highlight. Friday morning, the 28th of August is the one to circle. The swell drops to a more manageable 8ft from the SW with a 12-second period, but the real story is the wind. It’s glassy. Dead calm. The combined energy is 1602, a moderate but very clean push. This is your window for clean, lined-up waves at Surfers Point before the crowds can get organized. It’s an exposed reef break that's very consistent, so it will be handling that swell well. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

Saturday the 29th sees a clean cross-offshore wind in the morning with a 6ft, 16-second swell, but it gets chopped up again by the afternoon. The following days into the first week of September see the size stay in the 7ft to 12ft range, but onshore winds and lumpy conditions are the theme, making it tough going for a clean wave. The pattern late in the second week into September 6th looks rough with persistent onshore wind, so don't hold your breath for a magic run.

So, if you're looking for the best bet, get on it Friday morning, 28 August, for the glassy conditions. Otherwise, it's a waiting game for a cleaner window that might not open again soon.

Rusty.
