The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, lookin' at the surf for the next couple of weeks.
We've got a serious pulse of swell on the way, but it's gonna be a bit of a wild ride before we see any truly clean waves. The standout session by a country mile is Friday morning, the 21st of August.
The main event is at Surfers Point. This is a solid, exposed reef break, and it's gonna be absolutely pumping. We're talking a serious 15ft swell from the WSW early in the week, with very long 16-second periods, driven by a massive wave energy reading of 10,971. That's some serious ocean grunt. But the wind is gonna be a mess for a few days – cross-onshore and messy.
The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year.
Now, hold onto your hats for Friday morning, the 21st. The swell drops a bit to a still-very-chunky 12ft, still from the SW with a long 15-second period (wave energy 5,500). But the wind goes glassy. Totally dead. Offshore, clean, perfect conditions. For the experts out there, this is gonna be an exceptional session. That's your window. The morning is the call; by the afternoon, the wind swings cross-onshore again.
Saturday the 22nd through to the end of the month is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell hangs around, dropping from 10ft to 8ft, but it's plagued by bumpy cross-onshore winds. There are a few mornings with lighter breezes, but nothing that'll compare to that Friday glass-off.
Heading into the second week, it gets more uncertain. The first few days of September have some solid 10ft to 12ft swell still on the cards, but the wind looks to be up again, making for choppy conditions. It's a promising picture, but a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
So, to sum it up: the early week is big and ugly, the absolute pick of the bunch is Friday morning the 21st at dawn for the experts. After that, it's a waiting game for the wind to play nice again. Stay tuned.
Rusty.
