The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta say, looking at the charts for Surfers Point, it's a tale of two weeks. The first week is a bit of a write-off, but hold onto your boards, because the second week is shaping up to be something special. Let's get into it.
The pattern starts with some serious size but sloppy conditions. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so it's not a big deal.
It's a frustrating start, really. From Saturday the 18th right through to Tuesday the 22nd, we've got a solid, powerful, long-period groundswell (16 seconds) in the water, with massive wave energy (12392), but the wind is just a mess. It's mostly onshore or cross-onshore, blowing at 16 mph, and the surf is coming in at 16 ft, which is way too big for anyone but the experts, and even then, it's just poor. Sunday the 19th is a bit smaller at 12 ft, but the wind is still cross-onshore, churning it up. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are more of the same: sizeable swell but with a constant onshore breeze. It's a write-off.
Then, things start to get interesting. Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July, is the first real standout. The wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the ENE, and you’ve got a clean 10 ft SW groundswell with a long, satisfying 13-second period. The wave energy is moderate (4306), but the conditions are glassy. This is the window for the experienced crew. You’ll be getting long, clean walls. The afternoon is a little more marginal with a light cross-shore breeze, but still a solid option.
Thursday the 23rd brings a bit more consistency, but the wind is a little stronger. Friday the 24th is a write-off with strong winds and lumpy chop. The weekend of the 26th and 27th is a no-go. The wind is howling, onshore, and the swell is enormous again. It's a mess.
Now, here's where it gets promising. After a few days of slop, we get a run of great surf. The second week really kicks off. Wednesday the 30th of July is something to mark on the calendar. We’ve got a huge, powerful, long-period groundswell (18 seconds) from the WSW, with massive wave energy (8830). The wind is a strong cross-shore, which makes it messy, but hold on.
The real standout is the 31st of July. Friday morning, the swell is still a beast at 15 ft from the WSW, with a 17-second period, and the wind is a light cross-onshore. The energy is through the roof (12031). By Friday afternoon, the wind drops to a light 6 mph and the swell is a solid 16 ft. It's a big, powerful swell, so only for the experts. The crowd might be heavy, but the waves will be epic.
Then, the first weekend of August. Saturday the 1st of August, the swell peaks at 18 ft, but the wind is light and cross-off from the NNE. The wave energy is at 16026, which is extreme. It's a massive, powerful, clean groundswell, but it's so big it's borderline for the break itself. Sunday the 2nd of August is still a fantastic option, with a 15 ft SW swell and clean, cross-off winds. A brilliant end to the run.
For a bit of a break from the monster surf, the 29th of July is a nice, smaller, cleaner window. The swell is only 3 ft, but it's a very long-period (18 seconds) groundswell from the SW. It's a classic point-break wave, but it's small and inconsistent. If you're a longboarder, it's worth a look.
So, the best on offer is the Friday the 31st and Saturday the 1st of August. That's the big, clean, powerful groundswell window. The 29th of July is a nice, small, clean day for the longboarders. Enjoy the wait, because it's going to be worth it.
Rusty.
