The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty here. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty wild for the reef. We have a massive pulse of South-West swell coming through, but it's going to arrive with a whole lot of wind and rain, so we have to wait for the good stuff. The standouts are clearly the 26th and the 30th, with some solid, clean, dry conditions.
The water is sitting at a toasty 67°, which is a touch warmer than what we'd normally expect for this time of year, so you might get away with a thinner suit.
The first few days are a right-off for us. We start on Saturday, 18th July, with a huge 18ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is howling onshore at 22 mph, so it's just a washing machine. The energy is massive, reading 8948, but it's all for nothing. That keeps up through Sunday and Monday. The swell drops a bit to 12ft for Sunday, but it's still cross-onshore and messy. Tuesday is a bit of a tease with 10ft swell and a cross-shore wind, but it's still only marginal.
The first real window opens up on Wednesday, 22nd July. The swell is a solid 12ft from the SW, and the wind goes glassy in the afternoon and cross-offshore in the morning. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The energy is strong at 4468, and the period is a long 14 seconds, so it's proper groundswell. This thing is going to be big and powerful, so only for the well-experienced crew.
There's a bit of a lull on Thursday and Friday, with the swell dropping to 7ft and the wind picking up again, making it choppy. Then we hit the first absolute standout.
Saturday, 25th July afternoon starts to clean up, and then Sunday, 26th July is a cracker. We're looking at an 12ft to 13ft SW swell, with a very long 17 second period. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SE all day. This is exceptional for expert surfers. The energy is huge, reading 7798. This is a classic, deep groundswell. For a reef like this, it's going to be a long-period swell that will hold up beautifully, with long, clean lines. Expect big, powerful sets. It's a bit of a wait, but it's the best on offer.
After that, the swell backs off through the 27th and 28th, but it stays clean. Then we get another big spike on Wednesday, 29th July. The morning looks clean with a 3ft swell, but the afternoon is a write-off with 8ft and a fresh cross-onshore wind. The real standout for the second week is Thursday, 30th July. The swell jumps back up to 13ft from the SW, with a 16 second period. The wind is a moderate cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, keeping it clean. The energy is massive at 8225. This is another big, powerful day for the experts, and it's a bit more reliable than the 29th since the wind is with us all day.
Friday, the 31st, is still a solid 8ft and clean, so a good follow-up day. The opening of August (1st and 2nd) sees the swell fade down to 7ft, with the wind becoming a bit tricky again, but the 2nd of August has a clean morning.
So, to sum it up: the 22nd is your first taste of clean, big surf. But the real ones to circle are the 26th and the 30th – both are exceptional, big, clean groundswell days for the experienced crew.
Rusty.
