The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Surfers Point is cooking up for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a deep, long-period WSW groundswell starting to fill in. The water is running a touch warmer than usual for this time of year at 67°, which is a nice little bonus. But don’t rush out just yet – for the first few days, the wind is going to be a real hassle, blowing cross-onshore and chopping everything up.

On Tuesday the 18th, the swell is a chunky 15ft but the wind is 16 mph from the NW (cross-on), so it’s just a messy, high-energy (8957) soup. Not worth paddling out for. Wednesday the 19th is more of the same story – 15-16ft of WSW swell, still cross-onshore and choppy. Thursday the 20th, we get a slight break as the wind drops to a light 6 mph by the afternoon, leaving a light cross-onshore ripple on a 13ft SW swell (7506 energy). It’s still borderline, but it’s heading in the right direction.

Now, here’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: Friday morning, the 21st of August. The wind goes completely glassy (0 mph), the sky is clear, and you get a clean 12ft SW groundswell with 15-second intervals. The energy is still pumping hard (5625). This is exceptional, expert-level surf. The swell direction (SW) is a perfect match for the optimum (WSW) here at Surfers Point, a very consistent advanced reef break. The combination of size, long-period groundswell, and perfect conditions will lay down some absolute gems.

After Friday, the swell slowly backs off, dropping from 10ft on Saturday to 8ft by Sunday, with the wind switching to cross-shore and cross-off directions. It’s still surfable, but nothing touches that Friday morning.

We then hit a quiet patch from Monday the 24th through Tuesday the 25th, as the swell drops below 8ft and the wind cranks up again, even hitting 28 mph from the W on Tuesday making it onshore. Forget about it.

Then, around Wednesday the 26th of August, the swell builds back up with another big 16ft WSW groundswell (11079 energy) on Wednesday morning, but the wind is back to cross-onshore and choppy. The afternoon looks better with moderate cross-shore winds and a 15ft swell.

Looking ahead, Thursday the 27th of August morning looks promising with a clean 12ft SW swell and a light cross-offshore NNE breeze. Still, nothing beats that Friday morning, which remains the clear winner.

Late in the window, around Tuesday the 1st of September, there’s another very long-period (17 seconds) 13ft WSW swell (7707 energy) with light cross-onshore winds. It’s a promising long-range prospect, but way too far out to call it a sure thing.

For the pure surfer, that Friday the 21st morning is the absolute best shot you’re going to get.
